The Imperial Academy of Medicine selected Imperial Physician Yin to perform acupuncture on Zhao Zhen, but one more person was needed to hold Zhao Zhen still, to prevent him from moving around, otherwise, even a slight mistake could lead to unimaginable consequences. Cao Danshu then said she would hold Zhao Zhen, and Zhang Maoze also offered his help.

Zhao Zhen finally woke up after the acupuncture, but when he opened his eyes and saw Zhang Maoze holding silver needles beside him, he was startled. He completely forgot that he had summoned Zhang Maoze back. Overwhelmed, he tried to take a knife to commit suicide. Maidservant Dong, who was nearby, reacted quickly and firmly gripped the knife. She disregarded her hand being cut and bleeding profusely. Zhao Zhen stumbled out of the hall and grabbed Wen Yanbo and Fu Bi, accusing Cao Danshu and Zhang Maoze of rebellion.

Zhao Huirou was strolling in the garden with Liang Huaiji. She was puzzled to see the garden so deserted. After asking a passing maidservant, Zhao Huirou learned that Zhao Zhen had fallen ill. Zhao Huirou forgot her sorrow for Cao Ping and rushed desperately to Funing Palace. Liang Huaiji quickly followed her. Zhao Huirou wanted to enter Funing Palace to visit, but Wen Yanbo tried to stop her.

Cao Danshu knew that Zhao Zhen cared most about Zhao Huirou, so she allowed Zhao Huirou to enter. Seeing the weak Zhao Zhen lying on his sickbed, Zhao Huirou was heartbroken. She regretted having sulked with Zhao Zhen earlier. Zhao Huirou wanted to stay in Funing Palace to take care of Zhao Zhen, wishing that after Zhao Zhen recovered, he would take her to enjoy the flowers.

After the two reconciled, Zhao Zhen again summoned Wen Yanbo and Fu Bi inside. He instructed them to convey his verbal decree that from today onwards, Zhang Maoze would attend to him closely. Wen Yanbo proposed to Cao Danshu that officials from both departments wished to stay in the palace to pray for Zhao Zhen. Cao Danshu agreed to Wen Yanbo's request. Zhao Zhen's suspicion had broken Cao Danshu's heart. She sat alone in the courtyard, feeling utterly desolate.

Zhao Zhen had Zhao Huirou's company, but who did she have? After sobering up, Zhao Zhen also knew that he had hurt Cao Danshu's feelings. For the past few days, Zhao Huirou had been taking care of Zhao Zhen daily in Funing Palace. After taking his medicine, Zhao Zhen suddenly mentioned that he wanted to eat dried meat made by Cao Danshu and drink wine brewed by her.

Zhao Huirou, however, said no, explaining that Cao Danshu was observing a vegetarian diet and chanting scriptures to pray for Zhao Zhen, and would not brew wine or roast meat for him. Zhao Zhen sighed and said, "Then we'll wait until Cao Danshu finishes copying the scriptures." Zhao Zhen knew he had deeply hurt Cao Danshu and thought she would never want to see him again in her lifetime.

After taking care of Zhao Zhen, Zhao Huirou went to Kunning Palace to visit Cao Danshu. She relayed Zhao Zhen's words to Cao Danshu. Cao Danshu replied that if Zhao Zhen wanted dried meat, the imperial kitchen could certainly make it, but she no longer dared to cook for him. Zhao Huirou begged Cao Danshu to forgive Zhao Zhen just one more time. Cao Danshu, always soft-hearted, listened to Zhao Huirou's persuasion and went with her to Funing Palace.

Zhao Zhen was somewhat happy to hear that Cao Danshu had arrived. Zhao Huirou and Liang Huaiji quickly withdrew to let the two be alone. Zhao Zhen had been thinking of Cao Danshu, but when he actually saw her, he didn't know what to say. After hesitating for a long time, Zhao Zhen finally took Cao Danshu's hand. He wanted to explain the previous misunderstanding with Cao Danshu.

Zhao Zhen said that he probably trusted Cao Danshu's generosity too much, which was why he repeatedly poured harsh words on her during his most difficult times. Cao Danshu, however, said that Zhao Zhen didn't trust her generosity; rather, he knew how much she liked him, and it was by relying on her affection that he acted so fearlessly. Cao Danshu supported Zhao Zhen as they walked in the garden. Zhao Huirou watched from a distance upstairs.

After seeing them reconcile, she asked Liang Huaiji beside her how Cao Danshu and Miao Xinhe endured Zhao Zhen's heart not belonging to them. Zhao Huirou sighed, saying that after she learned Cao Ping repeatedly assured Zhao Zhen he would no longer acknowledge her, out of fear that his family would be implicated, she stopped loving him. Zhao Huirou could not accept loving someone who only gave her a part of his heart.

But now she knew that there was still Liang Huaiji in the world who would never abandon her. Zhao Huirou felt a little aggrieved for Liang Huaiji. Liang Huaiji was handsome and intelligent; if he hadn't entered the palace, he would surely have passed the imperial examination, married a respectable lady. Liang Huaiji, however, said that he was willing to be Zhao Huirou's shadow and was even grateful to be her shadow. Zhao Huirou was touched.

She took a few steps back, stood in the sunlight, and asked Liang Huaiji where a shadow was. Liang Huaiji did not understand Zhao Huirou's meaning and honestly replied that the shadow was at her feet. But Zhao Huirou walked closer to Liang Huaiji, placed her hand on her chest, and looked at him seriously, saying, "Liang Huaiji is in my heart."

While Zhao Zhen and Cao Danshu were dining, Zhang Maoze, who was nearby, asked Zhao Zhen if his health had improved recently, as officials from both departments hoped Zhao Zhen could attend court to reassure the ministers.
