Zhao Zhen announced to his officials in court that he intended to marry Zhao Huirou to Li Wei. The officials were initially shocked by the news, but none of them objected. Instead, they hailed Zhao Zhen as wise, thus agreeing to his decision. Seeing no opposition, Zhao Zhen issued an imperial decree to appoint Li Wei as the Commandant of the Imperial Son-in-Law, and once Zhao Huirou came of age, they would marry on an auspicious day.
Zhao Huirou complained to Liang Huaiji, guessing that Zhao Zhen disliked Cao Danshu, and thus also disliked Cao Ping, which was why he refused to marry her to Cao Ping. Zhao Huirou thought Cao Ping was handsome and, being a member of Cao Danshu's family, believed that the Cao family must be reliable. Liang Huaiji comforted Zhao Huirou, saying that Zhao Zhen highly valued the Li family.
Zhao Zhen must have believed that Zhao Huirou would receive the same love and care in the Li family as she did in the palace, which was why he insisted on marrying her to Li Wei. Only then did Zhao Huirou feel a little comforted. Dong Qiuhe was due to leave the palace in just over ten days, but she was very reluctant to part with Cao Danshu.
More importantly, Dong Qiuhe was worried about Cao Danshu being alone in Kunning Palace without a close attendant to look after her. Cao Danshu comforted Dong Qiuhe for a few moments and also said that she had already prepared a dowry for Dong Qiuhe. With Dong Qiuhe's companionship over the past few years, Cao Danshu's life in the imperial harem had not been so boring. Cao Danshu suddenly noticed that her maid, Ling'er, was not on duty in the palace.
Dong Qiuhe explained that Ling'er had caught a cold. Cao Danshu recalled that Ling'er had been ill several times this month and was a bit worried, so she planned to find a day to call an imperial physician to examine Ling'er. As the two were talking, Zhao Zhen suddenly arrived at Kunning Palace. Zhao Zhen looked at Su Zimei's new work written by Cao Danshu on the wall and casually mentioned reactivating Su Zimei. Cao Danshu thanked Zhao Zhen.
Dong Qiuhe brought Cao Danshu's newly brewed wine, and then Cao Danshu and Zhao Zhen began drinking in Kunning Palace. The two drank until night. Zhao Zhen brought up the matter of choosing a husband for Zhao Huirou in court today, and how the ministers had unexpectedly unanimously agreed with his decision. Cao Danshu also said that Li Wei was very good and a suitable match for Zhao Huirou. Zhao Zhen wanted to hear Cao Danshu's reasons.
Cao Danshu brought a box containing several silk handkerchiefs. These handkerchiefs were what Li Wei had previously used when sending snacks to Zhao Huirou, and they had sketches drawn by Li Wei. From the drawings, it could be seen that Li Wei was quite talented in painting. Moreover, Li Wei's affection for Zhao Huirou was very pure; he never befriended powerful figures at palace banquets, nor did he consider how much benefit Zhao Huirou could bring to the Li family.
Because of this, Cao Danshu felt that Li Wei was a good match for Zhao Huirou. Zhao Zhen was somewhat emotional, saying that the last time all the civil and military officials in the court universally hailed the Emperor as wise was when he chose Cao Danshu to be his empress. Reflecting on the past now, Zhao Zhen felt somewhat grateful for the rumors of that year.
Cao Danshu was not happy listening to Zhao Zhen's words; she felt that Zhao Zhen had married her for the sake of his officials. Cao Danshu mentioned that Zhao Huirou was not satisfied with Li Wei, and Zhao Huirou even believed that Zhao Zhen had not considered her feelings at all. Zhao Zhen stubbornly insisted that Li Wei would wholeheartedly treat Zhao Huirou well, free from the suspicions, considerations, calculations, and nitpicking of worldly people.
Zhao Zhen then asked Cao Danshu if she had ever treated him sincerely. Cao Danshu was saddened by his words and, fueled by the wine, expressed her dissatisfaction. Back then, Zhao Zhen had reluctantly married her into the palace and had been cold and distant to her for years. What right did Zhao Zhen have to accuse Cao Danshu of not being sincere towards him? After venting her emotions, Cao Danshu wanted Zhao Zhen to leave.
However, Zhao Zhen refused to let Cao Danshu continue to sulk; with a hint of forcefulness, he kissed Cao Danshu and stayed overnight in Kunning Palace. In the middle of the night, Cao Danshu woke from a dream and was gazing absently at Zhao Zhen lying beside her. She suddenly heard shouts outside the hall. Unbeknownst to them, the palace had suddenly caught fire. People in various pavilions were awakened one after another.
Cao Danshu saw the flames outside from within Kunning Palace and heard the sound of horse hooves, realizing that something had happened in the palace. An imperial attendant rushed to Kunning Palace to report to Cao Danshu, saying that there were people killing and setting fires outside, and the flames at Funing Hall were the fiercest.
Cao Danshu remained fearless in the face of danger and immediately ordered her verbal decree to be conveyed, sending people to summon the Two Provinces' Dutong to Kunning Palace to protect Zhao Zhen. However, it was strictly forbidden to leak the news of Zhao Zhen's presence in Kunning Palace. After giving the orders, Cao Danshu had Dong Qiuhe retrieve her long sword, and she herself guarded Zhao Zhen's side. Liang Huaiji rushed to Funing Hall and found Zhang Maoze.
Zhang Maoze reported what he knew, saying that imperial bodyguards had led people around to the back of Funing Hall, but whether it was a rebellion or not was still unknown. Zhang Maoze told Liang Huaiji to guard Funing Hall to confuse the intruders, while he himself went to Kunning Palace to protect the Emperor.
No sooner had Zhang Maoze left than Zhang Bihan, worried about Zhao Zhen, disregarded Cao Danshu's verbal decree and rushed to Funing Hall, wanting to see Zhao Zhen. Liang Huaiji and the others then let Zhang Bihan enter Funing Hall. After Zhang Maoze arrived at Kunning Palace, he speculated that there weren't many intruders in the palace and wanted to go out and contact the imperial guards. However, Cao Danshu refused to take the risk and ordered Zhang Maoze to stay by Zhao Zhen's side at all times, protecting him closely.
