Cao Danshu had summoned Liang Huaiji to Kun Ning Hall, where she praised him and intended to give him rewards. Just then, Zhang Bihan, carrying her sick daughter Zhao Chuyue, attempted to force her way into Fu Ning Hall but was blocked by Cao Danshu's guards. Instead, she rushed to Kun Ning Hall, loudly proclaiming that she and her daughter had been villainously harmed. Cao Danshu allowed her in.
Zhang Bihan demanded to see Zhao Zhen to settle the matter of her daughter's illness. Cao Danshu explained that Zhao Chuyue's condition was an asthma attack, an ailment she had suffered since birth, exacerbated by recent weather changes. While the immediate danger had passed with medication, a full recovery would require patience and slow recuperation. Cao Danshu stressed that the illness was not related to any supernatural occurrences, but Zhang Bihan refused to listen.
She accused Zhao Huirou of cursing her daughter and presented a "cursed doll" as proof. Zhang Bihan insisted that Cao Danshu was deliberately protecting Zhao Huirou and demanded Zhao Huirou be punished. She threatened to bypass Cao Danshu and go directly to Zhao Zhen for justice, but Cao Danshu explained that Zhao Zhen himself had issued an order for no one to disturb him and promised to investigate the matter thoroughly.
Overhearing the argument, Liang Huaiji recalled an earlier encounter by the lake where he saw a girl praying. He offered this information, initially unaware that the girl was Princess Zhao Huirou and mistakenly believing she was praying for her father. He volunteered to draw the scene to corroborate his testimony. Zhang Bihan, however, dismissed his account, suggesting the girl could be an adopted daughter of a palace official, and accused Liang Huaiji of fabricating evidence under someone's instigation.
She even slapped him, demanding he reveal the "truth." Cao Danshu intervened, stopping Zhang Bihan and pointing out that Liang Huaiji wouldn't know Zhao Huirou was a princess, making it impossible for him to be manipulated. Upon learning Zhao Huirou's identity, Liang Huaiji immediately knelt to apologize, but Cao Danshu reassured him. She then sent for Zhao Huirou, instructing her attendants not to alarm Miao Xinhe.
However, Miao Xinhe was already aware of the situation and had summoned Zhao Huirou to question her, pressing for an explanation about her visit to the lake. Zhao Huirou denied cursing Zhao Chuyue, swearing she would never harm her own sister. Fearing Miao Xinhe's worry, Zhao Huirou hesitated to disclose Zhao Zhen's serious illness. Miao Xinhe, concerned for Zhao Huirou and her own pregnancy, decided to go to Kun Ning Hall to clarify the matter.
Miao Xinhe arrived first, asking Cao Danshu to ensure a thorough investigation. Upon learning from Xiu Niang about Liang Huaiji's defense of Zhao Huirou, Miao Xinhe felt relieved and expressed her heartfelt gratitude to him. Zhang Bihan, still convinced that Miao Xinhe was instigating the situation and that Cao Danshu was secretly helping them to harm Zhao Chuyue, continued her protests. When Zhao Huirou arrived, Cao Danshu gently and patiently questioned her.
Zhao Huirou admitted being at the lake but denied making the cursed doll, stating only that she wouldn't do such a thing and refusing to explain further. Zhang Bihan questioned why the doll appeared there after Zhao Huirou left. Miao Xinhe, anxious for her daughter, pressed Zhao Huirou for more details. Cao Danshu, noticing Zhao Huirou's distress, kindly reassured her, hoping she would explain once calmer.
Liang Huaiji, remembering that Zhao Huirou's birth had led to a general amnesty that saved him from a childhood transgression, stepped forward to explain her actions. He clarified that Zhao Huirou was praying for Zhao Zhen, who was seriously ill, and also for Miao Xinhe's healthy pregnancy, reasoning that Zhao Huirou would never curse her own sister.
He provided a logical, well-reasoned explanation, even making a comparison that angered Zhang Bihan, who felt he likened her to the infamous Zhao Feiyan and began to argue loudly. Just as the argument escalated, an inner attendant, or Zhang Maoze, arrived from Fu Ning Hall with news that Zhao Zhen had awoken from his coma.
Zhao Zhen's first words upon waking were to ask for Zhao Huirou, stating that he heard her calling him in his dream and felt her deep filial devotion. Cao Danshu, disregarding Zhang Bihan, immediately took Zhao Huirou and Miao Xinhe to Fu Ning Hall. Zhao Zhen, now informed of the accusations against Zhao Huirou, comforted her. He shared his understanding that Zhao Huirou had secretly prayed for him out of concern for Miao Xinhe's pregnancy.
With his reassurance, Zhao Huirou finally broke down and cried, releasing her pent-up grievances. In other affairs, Yan Shu and court officials were discussing how to respond to the Khitan's insolent demand for land. Yan Shu suggested using a marriage alliance to resolve the issue, believing the current Liao ruler was not belligerent. Far away in Yanzhou, Fan Zhongyan, who had been demoted due to a battle loss, calmly accepted his fate despite Di Qing's indignation. Before his departure, Fan Zhongyan gave Di Qing a final lesson, entrusting him with the vital responsibility of defending the borderlands and protecting the local populace.
