Wang Mumu’s father, who drank heavily every day, eventually ruined his health. When the ambulance took him to the hospital, he was diagnosed with late-stage liver cancer, entirely caused by alcohol abuse. Now the family was faced with massive medical expenses. In reality, chemotherapy couldn’t cure late-stage cancer—it could only prolong life for a few days. Mumu's family was already impoverished, and now things were even worse.

Although Mumu had always cursed her father for abusing her mother and wished he would disappear, when she heard that he was seriously ill, she couldn’t help but feel heartbroken. The family truly had no money left. Her mother wanted to give up on treatment, and while Mumu understood, it still made her very sad. Qiao Qingyu and Ming Sheng would also go to the hospital to visit Mumu’s father and comfort her, encouraging her to stay strong.

One day, both Ming Sheng and Qiao Qingyu visited the hospital. As they were leaving, Ming Sheng saw Qiao Qingyu standing at the entrance. It was raining outside. He had a folded umbrella in his backpack but chose to leave it there. Walking up to Qiao Qingyu, he said a few words—he told her that he was preparing for his study-abroad exams and would no longer be attending school. This might be the last time they saw each other.

Upon hearing this, Qiao Qingyu was momentarily speechless. Then she quickly smiled at Ming Sheng and wished him success in his exams. Ming Sheng began helping his father with issues surrounding the hospital case. His father was not good at explaining himself, so Ming Sheng took it upon himself to search for evidence and prove his father’s innocence. At school, Qiao Qingyu saw a campaign promoting AIDS awareness and prevention, which was also recruiting volunteers.

Thinking of her sister, she approached the organizers and asked about volunteering. She signed up as a volunteer and, through her work, learned a lot about the subject. In fact, with proper treatment, people with AIDS can live another ten years without issue—so why did her sister pass away so soon? It remained a mystery.

While Qiao Qingyu was doing everything she could to find out why her sister had died, her younger brother called to tell her their mother had been taken to the hospital. Qiao Qingyu rushed there and found out that her mother had been suffering from depression for quite some time. Her father told her that ever since Beiyu’s death, Li Fanghao had been overcome with guilt.

She would cry at night while holding Beiyu’s photo, and one night even went to sleep by Beiyu’s grave, looking peaceful but out of touch with reality. She often wandered outside at night and rarely slept. Qiao Qingyu had noticed that her mother seemed “off,” but she never imagined it was depression.

She had always felt her mother didn’t love them enough, didn’t care for her sister properly—but now she realized that her mother had grieved so deeply it made her ill. That was enough to prove her mother did love them. Meanwhile, Ming Sheng never stopped working hard to help his father uncover the truth. Unlike his father, who stayed at home waiting, Ming Sheng actively sought out patients to learn what had happened. Finally, his father was cleared of all misunderstanding—the patient withdrew the complaint, and Ming Qiuxin was allowed to return to work at the hospital.
