Wu You, with Man Yao riding with him, swiftly made his way back to the city in the rain. Their path intersected with the Crown Prince's carriage, whose attendant imperiously demanded Wu You yield. Wu You sharply retorted, questioning the attendant's labeling of others as "commoners," before forcefully overturning the Crown Prince's carriage with a display of martial arts and riding off. The incensed Crown Prince ordered a fine horse from his stable to be sent to the capital's yamen.

Upon reaching his manor, Wu You insisted Man Yao stay, using her wet clothes as an excuse to keep her in his residence. The following morning, Wu You summoned Man Yao. She immediately expressed her desire to leave, but Wu You warned her that the Crown Prince, enraged by the previous night's incident, would likely target her as she was seen riding with him. Man Yao worried about potential trouble for the Moon Embrace Teahouse if she remained absent.

To address this, Wu You promptly dispatched guards to protect the teahouse but still refused to let Man Yao depart. As Man Yao tried to argue further, Wu You pulled her close. He recalled Wu Yu's earlier advice on how to test a woman's affections but decided against such games, instead directly confessing his feelings, stating that she had captured his heart and was paramount to him.

Uncertain how to respond, Man Yao found herself led by Wu You to a beautifully designed chamber. Wu You revealed it was newly built, elegantly decorated with flowers and a serene pool, and named it "Man Yin Chamber," dedicating it to her. As Wu You continued to approach, a flustered Man Yao accidentally stepped backward and fell into the flower pool. Just as Wu You moved to assist her, Princess Zhao Yun unexpectedly burst in.

Zhao Yun thanked Wu You for his intervention that thwarted an unwanted marriage proposal from Prince Qing He's son, who had sought the match as revenge after Princess Rong Le publicly humiliated him. However, upon seeing Man Yao with Wu You, Zhao Yun confronted him about her presence, reminding him of his engagement to Princess Rong Le. Annoyed, Wu You instructed Leng Yan to escort Princess Zhao Yun back to her manor.

Meanwhile, at the Princess's residence, Ling Yue and Lian Xin grew increasingly anxious over Princess Rong Le's overnight absence. Xiao Sha returned, reassuring them that he had located the princess and she would return soon. Later, Man Yao proposed a chess match with Wu You, suggesting a bet: if she won, he would allow her to leave.

Wu You questioned her persistent desire to depart, to which Man Yao explained that despite the manor's splendor, her status as a commoner made an extended stay inconvenient. Their game was then interrupted by the insistent arrival of Prince Chen, Wu Yu. Wu Yu immediately confronted Wu You about a recent shipwreck, revealing that a body found was that of Deputy Minister Ma, Yu Shihai's right-hand man.

He accused Yu Shihai of orchestrating the shipwreck to silence Deputy Minister Ma, who was a key witness in a widespread rank-selling case. Wu Yu detailed how other officials connected to the case had died under suspicious circumstances, asserting these were murders, not accidents. He implored Wu You to intervene, reminding him of Chief Minister Qin's belief in his ability to continue his aspirations. Wu You, however, expressed a cynical view of the deeply rooted corruption, lamenting the court's instability.

Despite his apparent refusal to act, Wu You covertly instructed Leng Yan to keep a close watch on Wu Yu. Fueled by indignation, Wu Yu stormed into the Eastern Palace and directly confronted the Crown Prince. He fiercely accused the Crown Prince of selling ranks and committing murder, presenting a letter as proof and threatening to report him to the Emperor.

Enraged, the Crown Prince ordered his guards to seize Wu Yu, then smashed a vase over his head, snatched the letter, and burned it. The Crown Prince then falsely declared that Prince Chen had attempted to assassinate him, ordering his immediate imprisonment and issuing a severe warning against anyone spreading a different account. Back at the manor, Man Yao and Wu You resumed their chess game. Wu You, seemingly distracted, lost three consecutive rounds.

Man Yao attempted to claim her freedom based on their bet, but Wu You denied having agreed to it. Man Yao, however, showed insight into Wu You's character, observing his compassion and urging him to take decisive action, likening it to a crucial move in chess. She encouraged him to take on the rank-selling case to prevent more innocent lives from being ruined.

At that moment, Leng Yan brought urgent news: Prince Chen had been imprisoned for allegedly attempting to assassinate the Crown Prince. The following morning, Wu You, dressed in his court attire, prepared to attend the imperial court. His mind replayed the tragic end of his teacher, Chief Minister Qin, the officials implicated in the rank-selling scheme, and Man Yao's words urging him to act. This solidified his resolve. His unexpected presence at court surprised the assembled officials.

The Emperor began the session by addressing Prince Chen's case. Yu Shihai was the first to speak, claiming that Wu Yu had fabricated evidence to frame him and the Crown Prince. The Crown Prince then added that Wu Yu had a prior dispute with Deputy Minister Ma, suggesting personal vengeance as the motive. The Emperor then sought Wu You's opinion.

Wu You asserted that the case was complex, offered to personally oversee the investigation into the rank-selling, and requested a seven-day delay on Prince Chen's verdict. Yu Shihai immediately objected, citing Wu You's close relationship with Prince Chen as a conflict of interest. At this juncture, Fu Chou stepped forward and proposed a military pledge: if Wu You failed to produce witnesses and evidence within seven days, he must accept a caning, a salary deduction, and a demotion.

Wu You accepted the terms without hesitation, and the Emperor approved. Princess Zhao Yun visited Wu Yu in prison. He dismissed his own situation, confident in his status as a prince. Zhao Yun scolded him for his recklessness, reminding him of the Crown Prince's vindictive nature and revealing that Wu You had pledged to solve his case within seven days. Wu Yu retorted that she was only worried about Wu You, not him, causing Zhao Yun to burst into tears.

Seeing her distress, Wu Yu quickly apologized and begged her to stop crying. Zhao Yun then wiped her tears, promising to seek the Empress's help for his release. Wu You dispatched Leng Yan to find a crucial person, instructing him to contact Minister Wu for assistance and emphasizing the need for secrecy. Soon after, Man Yao visited Wu You. She acknowledged that his decision to take on the case revealed a compassionate side and warned him of increased danger.

Wu You, in turn, questioned why she still wished to leave. Man Yao explained they had different missions. She then demonstrated a deep understanding of his motivations, revealing her knowledge of his deceased mother, Lady Yun, and Chief Minister Qin, and how Wu You still carried their unfulfilled wishes.

She also revealed that she knew he had allowed Prince Chen to create a scene at the Eastern Palace because it was all under his control, and that she had found and read the incriminating letter at the teahouse. Later that night, Xiao Sha successfully infiltrated Wu You's manor by following carriages carrying secret files. He found Man Yao and offered to take her away, but she refused, explaining her intention to use her stay to gather information.

The two then discreetly approached Wu You's chambers, where they overheard him discussing "The Book of Mountains and Rivers" with Leng Yan. Wu You speculated that a former official named Li Zhiyuan, involved in writing the book sixteen years ago, might possess evidence about the rank-selling and crucial clues regarding Chief Minister Qin's fate. Man Yao accidentally made a noise, but they escaped undetected. Moments later, Wu You visited Man Yao, offering her calming incense.

After he left, Xiao Sha reminded Man Yao of her true identity as Princess Rong Le of Western Qi and urged her not to waver from her mission concerning "The Book of Mountains and Rivers." Meanwhile, the Crown Prince was furious with Yu Shihai for allowing Li Zhiyuan, a crucial figure, to escape.

He angrily insisted that Li Zhiyuan must be killed before Wu You could find him, warning Yu Shihai that if their scheme were exposed, while he might only suffer demotion, the Yu family would face complete ruin.
