Zhao Yun pleaded with Ning Qianyi to cease his opposition to Prince Li and Princess Rong Le, urging him to return "The Book of Mountains and Rivers" and relinquish power to the Emperor so they could live a quiet life together. Wu You interjected, stating that Ning Qianyi, consumed by his quest for power, cared for nothing else.
Ning Qianyi scoffed, telling Zhao Yun not to be foolish, as having come so far, there was no turning back; if he let them go, they would not spare him, and he would face destruction. He ordered his men to kill them but warned them not to hurt Zhao Yun. Just as Ning Qianyi's men were about to act, Luo Yan suddenly intervened, holding the very dagger Ning Qianyi had given her to his throat, daring them to move.
Ning Qianyi, surprised, questioned her resolve and easily disarmed her, injuring her hand, confident she wouldn't strike. Zhao Yun then picked up the dagger and held it to her own neck, declaring she would rather die than witness him become a murderer. Ning Qianyi panicked, imploring Zhao Yun not to force his hand, reminding her she was special to him and that he truly loved her.
Zhao Yun, however, accused him of being cruel, heartless, and power-hungry, saying she did not want her child to have such a father. Enraged by being called "power-hungry," Ning Qianyi dismissed her threat and commanded his men to proceed. Just then, the young Emperor arrived with imperial guards, surrounding Ning Qianyi's elite troops.
The Emperor sternly questioned Ning Qianyi's audacity in mobilizing troops without permission to kill the Emperor of Qi, Prince Li, and Prince Regent of Northern Lin, warning of the disastrous repercussions for Chen.
Ning Qianyi attempted to spin the narrative, claiming they would frame the deaths as a mutual fight between Prince Li and Prince Regent, with the Emperor of Qi dying while saving his sister, thus directing Western Qi's vengeance towards Northern Lin and allowing Chen to unite the world and become its overlord. Wu You sarcastically asked if this was the promise Fu Yuan had given him.
Ning Qianyi retorted that Fu Yuan only promised the land in the south, but he desired far more. The Emperor then accused Ning Qianyi of conspiring with an enemy and attempting to incite war. Ning Qianyi countered that his alliance with the Empress Dowager of Northern Lin was solely for expanding Chen's territory, thus not a crime.
When challenged by the Emperor to produce the letter of alliance, Ning Qianyi denied its existence and questioned the Emperor's late-night presence, suggesting he was manipulated. Ning Qianyi boldly declared his intention to manage all national affairs until the Emperor came of age. Zhao Yun, angered, asked if he believed his crime would go unnoticed simply because the letter hadn't been read. Flustered, Ning Qianyi demanded the letter from Zhao Yun, but Luo Yan snatched it and read it aloud.
The letter from Fu Yuan clearly outlined a plot to use Rong Le's death as a pretext to provoke Prince Li into fighting Fu Yuan's son, aid Ning Qianyi in killing Prince Li, and in return, grant Ning Qianyi half the southern land and the throne. Hearing Ning Qianyi's treasonous plot, the Emperor ordered his immediate arrest. Still struggling, Ning Qianyi appealed to Luo Yan, reminding her of their shared goal of unifying the land.
Luo Yan countered that the united world she desired was a peaceful one without war, not one seized by force. Wu You, Rong Le, and Wu Chou then confronted Ning Qianyi about his true intentions, exposing his greed and disregard for human lives. As the Emperor commanded his capture, Ning Qianyi requested a final toast with Wu You, claiming Wu You was the only person worthy of being his rival, recalling their previous encounter at Lady Yun's tomb.
Rong Le and others, aware the wine was poisoned, showed visible concern. Wu You refused the toast, stating Ning Qianyi was not worthy of being his rival because he only ever wanted power and cared nothing for human lives. Realizing his efforts were futile, Ning Qianyi drank the poisoned wine himself, collapsing and dying after telling Zhao Yun not to let their child know he had a failure for a father. Following Ning Qianyi's death, Rong Le fainted.
The physician reassured Wu You that she fainted from fatigue but then delivered joyful news: Rong Le was pregnant. Wu You was overjoyed. Meanwhile, Wu Chou stood at a cliff, contemplating suicide, tormented by his past and the memory of Lin Shen's manipulations. He seemed to see Lady Yun, his mother, before him. Wu You arrived and stood silently with him.
After a long pause, Wu Chou abandoned his suicidal thoughts and revealed that their father, the former Emperor, was still alive. Rong Qi visited the unconscious Rong Le. To save her, he cut his hand and fed his blood to her. He explained to Xiao Sha that he sent Xiao Ke to him not as a hostage, but because he trusted both of them to protect Rong Le, which was his true desire.
As Rong Qi prepared to take Rong Le back to Western Qi, Wu You arrived just as Rong Le regained consciousness. Wu You joyfully told Rong Le she was pregnant. Delighted, Rong Le embraced the news. Seeing her happiness with Wu You, Rong Qi departed with a heavy heart. Later, Luo Yan played the guqin for Rong Le.
Rong Le remarked that while earlier Luo Yan's music hinted at hidden burdens, now it was tranquil and momentous, suggesting a clear mind. Luo Yan agreed, explaining that the same song evokes different feelings based on one's state of mind, acknowledging Rong Le's pure heart. Rong Le expressed her desire to address her by her true name, Luo Yan, and forge a genuine friendship. Rong Le expressed curiosity about Luo Yan's past.
Luo Yan mused that she once believed obtaining "The Book of Mountains and Rivers" would fulfill her mission, but it only brought regret and damaged their friendship. Rong Le, now understanding, conveyed that in chaotic times, people's choices are often made out of desperation, and what matters is a clear conscience, not others' judgment. Luo Yan fully agreed with her words.
She then returned "The Book of Mountains and Rivers," which she had taken from Ning Qianyi's secret chamber, to Rong Le as a gesture of amends. Luo Yan then bid farewell, announcing her plan to travel the world and live a life in harmony with nature. Wu You had a discussion with the Emperor, who presented him with three horse sculptures, explaining only one represented Chen's finest stallions.
If Wu You chose correctly, he could take a thousand horses back to Qingzhou; otherwise, he would leave empty-handed. Wu You accepted the challenge, adding a condition: if he could also reveal the meanings behind the other two sculptures, the Emperor must grant him another request. The Emperor agreed.
Wu You confidently picked a clay horse sculpture, explaining that Chen, having rebuilt its army from rebellion, valued horses as much as humans, never symbolizing them with mere gold, wood, or grass. Only the clay horse, made from the soil of their homeland and imbued with the spirit of warriors, truly represented Chen's elite stallions. Deeply impressed, the Emperor granted him the thousand horses and pledged a century-long alliance between Chen and Northern Lin, ensuring no more wars.
Wu You's additional request was to take Zhao Yun away from Chen. The Emperor readily agreed, stating that all those unknowingly involved in Ning Qianyi's treasonous plot were spared, as his ambition was his own. The Emperor also expressed envy for Zhao Yun having a brother who cared for her. Wu Chou resolved to return to Zhongshan to confront Fu Yuan for answers.
As he bid farewell to Rong Le, he mentioned hearing Ning Qianyi and Chen Yu discuss Qin Yong and "The Book of Mountains and Rivers." He revealed that Hen Xiang was actually Qin Yong's daughter, Qin Xiang. Rong Le recalled her past encounters with Hen Xiang and asked if Hen Xiang had other sisters, but Wu Chou was unsure. Zhao Yun was packing her belongings in the residence when she found clothes Ning Qianyi had prepared for their child.
Overwhelmed by how swiftly things had changed, she broke down in tears. Rong Le comforted her, assuring her that she and Wu You would be there for her. Before their return to Northern Lin, Wu You publicly announced Rong Le's mission to acquire horses, revealing she had endured humiliation for it, and prepared a grand ceremony to welcome her back to Qingzhou.
Rong Qi returned to the palace and learned that the Empress Dowager (Fu Yuan) had gone to the mountains for recovery a year ago and had not yet returned. He recalled seeing Fu Yuan examining something in her mirror and found the other half of "The Lone Frost Tome" hidden there. The text in the book described how a "Heaven's Mandated" person, if pregnant, could transfer poison to the infant during childbirth, but at the cost of both their lives. Realizing the book was now gone, he suspected Fu Yuan might still harm Rong Le, lamenting when she would finally leave them in peace.
