Fu Chou told his mother, Fu Yuan, that in his heart, she was as important as the nation and promised to hold her coronation quickly after the issues with the Ministry of Rites subsided. Fu Yuan, feeling emotional, confessed she hadn't been sleeping well and wanted to go for a walk. She mentioned that the late crown prince's death anniversary was approaching and wished to visit a temple to pray for him and gather support for their cause.

She also shared that she had been dreaming of the crown prince covered in blood and of the former emperor, Zongzheng Yunhe. As they passed a palace, they heard strange sounds. Fu Chou went to investigate, finding a man from the Creed of Vengeance torturing Zongzheng Yunhe, who was bound to a wheelchair. Fu Chou was stunned to realize Zongzheng Yunhe was still alive and had been hidden by Lin Shen.

Fu Yuan followed Fu Chou and upon seeing Zongzheng Yunhe, immediately became frantic. She screamed that he had tried to deceive her, destroy her country, and hand her over to the Western Qi emperor to be humiliated. Fu Chou was deeply shocked by her words. A physician later informed Fu Chou that Fu Yuan had fainted from acute anxiety, and her body was very weak due to past illnesses, advising her to move from the damp Senyan Palace.

Fu Yuan later told Fu Chou that seeing Zongzheng Yunhe brought back the humiliation she had suffered and reminded her of the Creed of Vengeance, which had tormented her for ten years and driven her to insanity. Fu Chou assured her that he had ordered the extermination of the Creed of Vengeance, with only Lin Shen unaccounted for, and promised to capture him for her to punish.

Fu Yuan insisted on staying in Senyan Palace as a reminder of their vengeance and urged Fu Chou to promptly lead an army to the southern border to kill Zongzheng Wuyou, stating their revenge would not be complete as long as he lived. She questioned his current indecisiveness compared to his swift actions a year ago, asking if anything held him back. When he replied that there was nothing, Fu Yuan collapsed from the strain.

Wu You summoned Sun Jizhou to the School of Wisdom. Addressing him as "Teacher," Wu You recalled how Sun Jizhou had personally taught him basic passages when he was young. Wu You expressed gratitude, noting that after his mother and former teacher passed away, he became unruly and arrogant, but Sun Jizhou alone offered to teach and guide him. Sun Jizhou praised Wu You's brilliance, confident he would become a "master of the world."

Wu You then challenged Sun Jizhou, asking whether he taught him "how" to become a master, or "because" he could become one. He probed further, asking if Sun Jizhou would abandon him if their political views diverged. Sun Jizhou claimed he would never desert him.

Wu You, no longer hiding his feelings, stated he still called him "Teacher" out of gratitude, but if Sun Jizhou continued to oppose him, it would be a betrayal of his own principles, the Sun family, and Northern Lin. Sun Jizhou laughed awkwardly, claiming he was only joking. Wu You then shifted the topic, suggesting Sun Jizhou could retire to a peaceful rural residence in Yi.

Sun Jizhou refused, declaring he would rather die in court than live a life of degradation. Realizing they had never truly understood each other, Wu You bowed deeply to Sun Jizhou, proclaiming their teacher-student relationship severed; henceforth, they would be merely ruler and subject. He warned Sun Jizhou that taking another step forward would mean no turning back. That night, as Sun Jizhou played chess with his daughter, Yali, he asked who usually won between her and Rong Le.

When Yali admitted Rong Le won more often, Sun Jizhou advised her against hesitation, stating that with the "arrow notched," she needed to be ruthless to win, or she would face a crushing defeat. Yali declared that she had lost once but would not lose again. Sun Jizhou then hinted that she could manipulate the calming incense she gave Wu You to turn the situation around.

Meanwhile, Ke'er, still searching for a substitute for the Blood Raven Root, worried about facing Rong Le. As Wu Yu tried to comfort her, Ling Yue rushed in, supporting Yali, who had suddenly fainted after visiting Rong Le. Ke'er examined Yali but found no serious illness, only signs of overthinking, which shouldn't have caused her to faint. Yali feigned weakness and, appearing shaky, expressed a desire to return home.

Citing her frail state and the late hour, Ling Yue suggested Yali stay overnight and asked Ke'er to care for her, to which Ke'er agreed. Later that night, Yali stealthily approached Wu You's study, where he was reviewing memorials. After Wu You blew out his candle and went to his bedchamber to rest, Yali entered, an act witnessed by Ling Yue from a distance. Inside, Yali saw Wu You asleep, then resolutely removed her own clothes and lay beside him.

The following morning, Yali woke to an empty bed. Seeing Wu You changing behind a screen, she deliberately knocked over the incense burner on the bedside table. Hearing the commotion, Lenyan and other maidservants rushed in. Wu You left without a word, prompting the maidservants to gossip. Ke'er also arrived, and an embarrassed Yali quickly departed. Ke'er, however, thoughtfully observed the overturned incense burner on the floor.

The next morning, Sun Jizhou arrived with Yali to seek an audience with Rong Le. Ling Yue hesitated, trying to dissuade Rong Le from meeting them, but Sun Jizhou forcefully entered. He instructed Yali to kneel and announced to Rong Le that Wu You had favored Yali the previous night. Rong Le questioned Ling Yue, who reluctantly confirmed the story, making Rong Le realize she was the last person in the manor to know.

Sun Jizhou pressed on, stating that "what was done could not be undone," and urged Rong Le to be magnanimous and accept Yali into the manor to provide heirs for Wu You. Rong Le refused, asserting that she only believed Wu You. Infuriated, Sun Jizhou retorted that emperors always have many concubines and accused Rong Le of being selfish. Rong Le firmly maintained that until the truth was clear, she would trust Wu You to honor their vows.

Just then, Wu You entered, declaring that Rong Le's words perfectly encapsulated his own thoughts and that Sun Jizhou had misunderstood. Embarrassed, Sun Jizhou subtly threatened Wu You, warning that devotion to one woman at the expense of national stability could cost him the people's trust. Undaunted, Wu You stood his ground, and Sun Jizhou left angrily with Yali.

Wu You then told Rong Le that her words had confirmed their hearts beat as one, just as he had wished during the Lantern Festival: "I wish for no other except one. I wish to grow old with her and never be apart." Elsewhere, Yang Wei was abducted and tortured on the outskirts of the city. When his captors revealed they were ordered to burn him to death, Yang Wei immediately deduced that Fu Yuan was behind the plot.

That night, Fu Yuan visited Zongzheng Yunhe in the Eastern Palace. She gloated that for the past year, she had feigned insanity to make Fu Chou feel immense guilt, allowing her to escape Lin Shen's control. She explained she kept Zongzheng Yunhe alive only so he could witness his two sons fight to the death.

She reminded him of how he had once forced poison down her throat and delivered her to the Western Qi emperor, vowing that he was now receiving his just deserts. Fu Chou informed Chang Jian that he would be leaving Zhongshan to attend to something he should have done long ago.

He instructed Chang Jian to arrange for a body double in his bedchamber, to announce that he was ill, and to manage all court affairs in his absence, promising to return in half a month. Fu Chou also specifically ordered him not to inform Fu Yuan of his departure.
