At a grand banquet, ladies gathered with their found treasures, awaiting the Queen’s announcement of who had discovered Prince Zhenbei’s hidden item. Prince Zhenbei, Ning Qianyi, approached Princess Zhao Yun directly. He revealed that she had found the treasure he hid—a horsewhip symbolizing Chen’s supreme power—and requested her hand in marriage.
Princess Zhao Yun was surprised, and the Queen explained this was a special method Prince Zhenbei had discussed with her to choose his bride, confirming Zhao Yun was the chosen one. Wu Yu was incensed, wanting to confront Ning Qianyi, but Wu You wisely intervened, advising his brother that this serious matter should be brought before their Father, the Emperor.
Meanwhile, in the imperial study, the Emperor and Imperial Uncle discussed the impending war against Wei, noting that Western Qi had failed to provide promised food and safe passage, complicating their advance. An alliance with Chen was presented as a solution, promising thousands of high-quality horses. Suddenly, Wu Yu burst in, vehemently protesting the marriage alliance, kneeling to declare his love for Zhao Yun and his desire to marry her himself.
Wu You clarified the public proposal that had just occurred, reiterating his long-held disapproval of forming alliances through marriage. The Emperor, however, insisted the alliance was a done deal, having already granted Ning Qianyi the right to choose. The Imperial Uncle suggested telling Ning Qianyi that Princess Zhao Yun was already engaged to Prince Chen, momentarily swaying the Emperor.
However, Prince Zhenbei's envoy arrived, confirming Ning Qianyi's selection of Princess Zhao Yun and reiterating the promise of 1,000 horses, plus an additional 100, upon the marriage. The envoy warned that if Northern Lin violated the alliance, Ning Qianyi would immediately return to Chen. Hearing this, the Emperor instantly declared he would not go back on his word, formally naming Princess Zhao Yun as the marriage alliance princess to depart for Chen in two days.
Wu Yu, distraught, angrily confronted his Father, accusing him of sacrificing Wu You’s happiness for Western Qi and now his own for Chen, questioning if another child would be sacrificed should the war against Wei fail. The Emperor exploded in fury, scolding Wu Yu for not clarifying his relationship with Zhao Yun earlier and for questioning his sovereign despite enjoying a life of luxury as a prince.
Wu Yu retorted that he never wanted to be a prince, preferring a loving father to a powerful emperor who only cared about benefits. As Wu You tried to calm his brother, Wu Yu then lashed out at Wu You, asking why he couldn't stop Man Yao's marriage years ago if he was so collected.
The Emperor, further enraged by his sons' bickering, furiously called Wu Yu a "scoundrel" when Wu Yu brought up the Emperor's own "wild things" done for Lady Yun in his youth, and ordered Wu You to retrieve his brother before he did anything foolish. That night, Wu Yu rushed to Zhao Yun's manor, frantically calling for her. Her step-aunt appeared, verbally abusing Zhao Yun, calling her a useless "wench" who lived off them and wished her gone.
Enraged, Wu Yu tried to attack the step-aunt, but Wu You quickly stopped him. Zhao Yun's uncle then emerged, immediately kneeling in terror upon recognizing the princes. Wu You sternly declared that Princess Zhao Yun was now his own sister, with no further connection to their family, and threatened severe punishment if they dared to bother her again.
After leaving the manor, Wu Yu apologized to Wu You for his earlier outburst, and Wu You reassured him they still had time to fix the situation. Wu You then dispatched Leng Yan to find Zhao Yun, while he planned to meet Ning Qianyi the next morning. Upon learning that Princess Zhao Yun was chosen for the marriage alliance, Rong Le was deeply concerned, recalling how Zhao Yun had correctly guessed about the horsewhip.
She felt she couldn't simply stand by. General Fu Chou came to see her, confirming that Prince Zhenbei had formally announced in court his departure with Princess Zhao Yun in two days. Fu Chou emphasized that Ning Qianyi, holding true power in Chen, would not easily change his mind. He reminded Rong Le that as Western Qi's princess, her interference would be seen as Western Qi meddling, potentially worsening Zhao Yun's situation.
Fu Chou also pointed out that if Princess Zhao Yun was unwilling, Prince Li Wu You would certainly do his best to help her. When Rong Le attempted to explain her interaction with Wu You in the palace earlier, Fu Chou cut her off, stating the truth was unimportant to him, and urged her not to meddle if she still considered him her husband and harbored any feelings for him.
Later, Chen Yu remarked on General Fu's recent odd behavior, noting that his personal bodyguard Xiang Ying had been replaced by a man named Chang Jian. Princess Zhao Yun, instead of returning home, went to Luanyue Tower, hoping to confide in Rong Le, but she didn't arrive. Chen Yu suggested going to the General's Manor, but Zhao Yun expressed reluctance, finding General Fu, despite his seemingly caring demeanor, to have a scary, unpredictable temper.
Zhao Yun admitted she knew no one, not even Brother Wu You, could truly help her, but she desperately wanted to speak to Rong Le. She lamented wishing her parents were alive to fight for her, yet was also relieved they were gone, as they would be powerless to prevent her fate. She confided in Chen Yu about deeply loving someone.
Chen Yu, relating her own feelings of longing and fear to meet someone she liked who had returned to Zhongshan, offered to play her zither to comfort Zhao Yun. Wu You went to the Southern City Inn to find Ning Qianyi, but was told he was paying respects to a late friend in Northern Lin.
Remembering Ning Qianyi's previous mention of his mother, Lady Yun, and a book called "Shan He Zhi," Wu You rode to Yun's Tomb, where Ning Qianyi was indeed waiting. Ning Qianyi anticipated Wu You's purpose, stating he would not give up on Zhao Yun, as he had sworn to give the woman he loved a life of happiness.
Wu You proposed a wager: they would drink, and if Wu You’s wine cup hit the ground first, he would concede; if Ning Qianyi’s fell first, Wu You would only ask him to listen to his suggestions. Wu You won, proving his superior martial skill. Despite his victory, Wu You expressed no animosity.
He then shared the painful story of his past with Rong Le, confessing his deep regret for having used and lied to her, acknowledging that his actions created an unhealing wound between them that still caused pain. Ning Qianyi, deeply moved by the confession, promised not to repeat Wu You's mistakes and to truly cherish Zhao Yun. Seeing Ning Qianyi’s conviction, Wu You advised him to consider Zhao Yun's own feelings and allow her to make her choice.
Princess Zhao Yun received Wu Yu's message and found herself torn between leaving and staying. Chen Yu advised her to accept the marriage to Prince Zhenbei, highlighting his noble character, generosity, and future as Emperor of Chen, which would grant her ultimate power and status. Zhao Yun rejected this, stating she didn't care for wealth or status, prioritizing being with her beloved, even if it meant sacrifice.
Chen Yu then gently explained that while Zhao Yun was from a noble family, choosing her own happiness meant she would eventually have to face the consequences of her decisions. Just as Wu Yu arrived to take her away, Zhao Yun's heart made its choice. When Wu You and Ning Qianyi arrived at Zhao Yun’s room, they found her and Wu Yu already gone, leaving behind a letter and the horsewhip Ning Qianyi had given her.
In the letter, Princess Zhao Yun stated her decision to leave and asked Wu You to take care. Ning Qianyi, furious upon reading that Zhao Yun’s heart belonged to another, immediately declared he would seek an audience with the Emperor of Northern Lin for an explanation. Wu You tried in vain to calm him. Wu You waited for a long time outside the imperial study, eventually seeing Ning Qianyi and Fu Chou emerge.
He overheard Ning Qianyi entrusting Fu Chou with the task of retrieving Zhao Yun and Wu Yu, realizing the serious turn of events. Wu You then met his Father, the Emperor, who demanded to know if Wu You was involved in Wu Yu and Zhao Yun's elopement. Wu You denied prior knowledge but pleaded to be allowed to pursue them himself.
The Emperor refused, explaining that Ning Qianyi specifically appointed General Fu Chou to retrieve them, threatening to cancel the alliance and ally with Western Qi instead if his demand was not met. Wu You countered that Chen’s arrogance stemmed from Northern Lin’s perceived desperation for horses.
He revealed his efforts in Qingzhou, where he had been training soldiers and horses with refugees, asserting that he could solve the horse problem and make Northern Lin self-reliant if the war against Wei was delayed. The Emperor, torn between his desire for Wu Yu's happiness and the imperative of national affairs, seemed to consider Wu You's alternative.
Wu You further argued that Ning Qianyi, though shrewd, was not unreasonable, and that if he was allowed to retrieve Wu Yu and Zhao Yun and negotiate directly, a resolution could still be found. Meanwhile, Zhao Yun and Wu Yu had escaped to a secluded area, realizing they had forgotten food and money in their haste. They managed to catch a fish, which Wu Yu comically claimed had "hit its head," and roasted it.
As they playfully bickered, they marveled at their happiness despite living rough. Zhao Yun asked Wu Yu if he would regret giving up his princely life. Wu Yu firmly declared that from now on, there would be no prince or princess, no wealth or status, only the two of them, ready to wander the world together. As they expressed their devotion, Fu Chou's troops arrived and surrounded them.
Fu Chou, acting on the Emperor's orders, requested their return, explaining the grave implications of their elopement. When Wu Yu defiantly refused, Fu Chou ordered his men to arrest them. During the struggle, Fu Chou wounded Wu Yu. Wu You arrived just in time, confronting Fu Chou for using violence when the Emperor only ordered their safe return. Fu Chou calmly replied that swords had no eyes.
Despite his injury, Wu Yu stubbornly refused to go back, stating he didn't want to repeat the painful history of Wu You and Man Yao. While Wu You struggled to hold back Fu Chou, Zhao Yun watched in horror as Wu Yu's injuries worsened. Heartbroken, she cried out that she wanted Wu Yu to live, declaring she would return to the palace and agree to the marriage alliance for his safety.
Back at the palace, Wu You reported that he had brought Zhao Yun back, and Wu Yu, though seriously injured, was kneeling outside the Great Hall seeking forgiveness. The Emperor was displeased about Wu Yu's injuries, but Fu Chou attributed it to Wu Yu's strong resistance. Wu You still attempted to negotiate, but Princess Zhao Yun stepped forward, declaring her willingness to marry Prince Zhenbei.
Despite Wu You's plea for her not to act rashly, Zhao Yun asserted that if her marriage could ensure the safety of Northern Lin's people and the well-being of Wu Yu, Wu You, and Princess Rong Le, she would do it without complaint. Acknowledging her unwavering resolve, the Emperor conferred upon her the title of Royal Princess Zhao Yun, confirming her marriage to Chen in two days' time.
