During the morning court, the Emperor announced that Western Qi had once again found an excuse to withdraw from the alliance against Wei, rendering the partnership useless. He questioned General Fu Chou if his wife, Princess Rong Le, had mentioned anything about this, to which Fu Chou replied that she was merely a woman and would not be privy to national affairs.
He suggested that Western Qi was likely trying to leverage their position, knowing Northern Lin was eager for war. The Emperor, however, expressed his dissatisfaction with Fu Chou’s past underestimation of the southern border situation, which mirrored his current assessment of Western Qi. He then declared his decision to reinstate Zongzheng Wuyou as Prince Li and summon him back to the capital to discuss war strategies. Hearing of Wuyou's impending return, the Crown Prince grew anxious.
He decided to act decisively, even if it meant risking the Emperor's suspicion, believing it was a matter of Wuyou's survival or his own. That night, Fu Chou, carrying a wine pot, sought out Rong Le for a talk. Despite her surprise, Rong Le agreed.
Fu Chou began to lament his position, expressing frustration that despite his valiant service as a general, risking his life on the battlefield, he was publicly reprimanded by the Emperor and even by the "worthless" Crown Prince. As he continued to drink, his anger grew, and he eventually collapsed onto the bed, clinging to Rong Le and muttering about how others were lenient towards Wuyou while he alone had to silently endure everything.
Touched by his words, Rong Le decided against having Xiao Sha remove him. Meanwhile, in Qingzhou, Wuyou was playing chess when a group of masked assassins suddenly attacked. Amidst the fierce fighting, his senior, Wu Xiang Zi, arrived to assist. Wu Xiang Zi quickly recognized the attackers as members of the Creed of Vengeance and concluded that the Crown Prince must have sent them.
The next morning, after his night of heavy drinking, Fu Chou woke to find Rong Le personally preparing hangover soup for him. Feeling content, he remarked that it was the soundest sleep he had experienced since joining the army at the age of twelve. Shortly after, Prince Fan Yang arrived in Qingzhou to summon Wuyou back to the capital.
Though Wuyou initially wished to remain in Qingzhou to continue investigating the complex situation on the southern border, he agreed to return to thank the Emperor before making further plans. During their discussion, Miss Sun Yali arrived to pay her respects. Wuyou deliberately asked Yali to sit beside him and told her to prepare for the return journey to the capital.
Sun Ji Zhou, hearing this, expressed his approval, noting Yali's grandmother's upcoming 70th birthday and suggesting Wuyou accompany Yali, as he himself was too busy with southern border affairs. Before departing, Wuyou instructed Leng Yan to return with him, while Wu Xiang Zi was to remain in Qingzhou to continue investigating influential clans and stabilize the region.
At an inn, Fu Chou confronted Hen Xiang, demanding to know why she hadn't informed him of the Crown Prince's assassination attempt on Wuyou. Hen Xiang claimed ignorance, stating the Crown Prince had never mentioned it to her. Fu Chou did not press the issue further but sternly reminded her to remember her place and not act on her own accord.
Hen Xiang, clearly jealous, retorted that she had not forgotten her mission but wondered if Fu Chou had, especially after hearing he had spent the night in the princess's chambers. Fu Chou was visibly displeased by her surveillance and warned her that if she continued to act independently, he would show no mercy.
He reminded her of their shared past and the lengths she had gone to survive to be his shadow, emphasizing that his actions were none of her concern and that she was to monitor the Crown Prince, not him. He specifically warned her to control the Crown Prince to prevent him from making any foolish moves as Wuyou was returning to Zhongshan.
Chen Yu reported to Rong Le that despite activating all her connections, she had only confirmed Hen Xiang was from Western Qi and found no further information about her background. She recounted how Hen Xiang had suddenly appeared half a year ago, offering to work as a dancer at the House of Fragrance, before gaining fame through a performance at the General's Manor. Rong Le listened, then declared that further investigation might be unnecessary.
Chen Yu understood but reminded Rong Le of her past vow not to live a life of deception and urged her to be cautious. Rong Le sighed, admitting that she was merely a mortal, and that controlling one's destiny, though easy to say, was incredibly difficult to achieve. Prince Fan Yang returned to the Emperor, reporting that Wuyou would arrive in approximately five days.
The Emperor was pleased, expressing his belief that Western Qi's recent actions made them unsuitable allies for the upcoming war against Wei. He announced his decision to form an alliance with Chen, negating the need for a Western Qi passage and allowing a joint campaign against Wei. As murmurs rose among his ministers, the Emperor reassured them that he had secretly arranged this alliance with Prince Zhenbei, the Chen Emperor's powerful brother, who was already en route.
He explained that unlike the impoverished Western Qi who sought Northern Lin's protection, Chen, though poor, possessed a strong army. Prince Zhenbei would marry a Northern Lin imperial family member, receiving tools and valuables as dowry in exchange for Chen's cavalry. Later that night, Western Qi's dark guards found Fu Chou and threatened him with past transgressions, demanding he assassinate Ning Qianyi, Prince Zhenbei of Chen, before he reached Zhongshan to disrupt the Northern Lin-Chen alliance.
Fu Chou feigned compliance but harbored other intentions. Hen Xiang also opposed Ning Qianyi's assassination, arguing that the optimal time for their rebellion was during Northern Lin's war with Wei, making the Chen alliance crucial. She implied that to avoid disrupting the alliance while appeasing Rong Qi, Fu Chou had no choice but to use Rong Le. Having dealt with these matters, Fu Chou visited Rong Le's room, appearing hesitant.
He asked if he could stay the night, promising to sleep only on the couch. Recalling Fu Chou's lonely demeanor from days past and Chen Yu's advice, Rong Le softened and agreed. That night, both Fu Chou and Rong Le lay awake in their separate spaces. Fu Chou eventually asked Rong Le if she could address him by his name, expressing his desire to bridge the emotional distance between them and become true partners.
Rong Le, however, preferred their current arrangement of mutual companionship with personal boundaries, which she found less pressured. Faced with her response, Fu Chou reluctantly retreated from his request. Fu Chou invited Rong Le to Qingliang Lake for a scenic outing, inwardly acknowledging he would still have to use her. Rong Le arrived at Qingliang Lake to find Princess Zhao Yun unenthusiastically fishing and complaining that a nearby fishmonger had caught all the fish.
Seeing Zhao Yun's frustration, the fishmonger offered his catch to her, but Zhao Yun, with her kind nature, refused to accept them for free. Rong Le then proposed a fishing competition for the fish, which the fishmonger readily accepted. Fu Chou reported to the Emperor that Prince Zhenbei, Ning Qianyi, had reached Zhongshan and was visiting Qingliang Lake, assuring him that secret protection had been arranged.
The Emperor sternly reminded Fu Chou of his previous inadequacy in handling the southern border rebellion, which Wuyou had to rectify. He warned Fu Chou that if any mishap occurred during this critical alliance with Chen, the consequences would be severe. Fu Chou immediately vowed not to fail, promising to ensure Prince Zhenbei's safety and the success of the Northern Lin-Chen alliance.
