Princess Rong Le of Western Qi presented herself to the Emperor of Northern Lin. She then instructed her personal guard, Xiao Sha, to present a gift from her brother, Emperor Rong Qi: a pair of priceless White Jade Glaze Cups. Xiao Sha conveyed Emperor Rong Qi's message, emphasizing that while the cups were rare, they paled in comparison to Princess Rong Le. He hoped that Northern Lin would treat her well to secure a hundred-year alliance between their nations.
The Northern Lin Emperor agreed, promising to treat Rong Le as an honored guest and his son's future bride. However, Prince Wuyou, the Emperor's son, remained absent. The Emperor dispatched Prince Wuyu, instructing him to bring Wuyou to the court by any means. In a desperate and audacious move, Wuyu had Wuyou's sleeping couch carried directly into the imperial court, shocking the assembled officials. The Emperor, infuriated, ordered Wuyou to get up.
Wuyou, feigning sleep, lazily sat up, his eyes betraying no hint of drowsiness. Wuyou immediately declared his refusal to marry, asserting that he had never agreed to it and urged the Emperor to choose someone else. The Emperor retorted that the marriage was set and would proceed regardless. Princess Rong Le intervened, questioning the Emperor's use of force. She then confronted Wuyou, contrasting his arrogant and rude behavior with the praise in Northern Lin's marriage proposal.
She described him as a willful, spoiled child, pointing out that she, a woman, undertook a distant marriage for her country, while he selfishly refused. Rong Le proposed a six-month period for them to get to know each other, after which she would marry another if he still refused. Wuyou scoffed, declaring that strong nations do not rely on marriage alliances and that he had no interest in her deal.
Rong Le challenged him, suggesting his rejection stemmed from a fear of losing to her. Ultimately, the Northern Lin Emperor accepted Rong Le's proposal on Wuyou's behalf and adjourned the court. Afterward, Wuyu expressed concern that Rong Le was a formidable opponent, but Wuyou was unperturbed, admitting he found her sharp tongue amusing. Later, the Emperor confronted Wuyou, lamenting his son's enduring grudge and neglect of state affairs.
He explained the alliance with Western Qi was crucial to regain honor after a humiliating defeat against the state of Wei, a battle led by the Crown Prince. Wuyou dismissed his father's words, reiterating his refusal to marry and stating his reliance on his own capabilities, not a woman, to achieve his goals.
The Emperor expressed concern over his declining health and the nation's need for a reliable heir, but Wuyou coldly replied that the Crown Prince was the designated successor. Meanwhile, Emperor Rong Qi, whose own health was deteriorating, received confirmation of Rong Le's safe arrival and continued his search for a skilled doctor. In the palace, the Crown Prince and his father, Minister Yu, discussed the situation.
Minister Yu worried that Wuyou's power would be redoubled if he married the princess, but the Crown Prince was confident Wuyou would never agree to the marriage. Upon arriving at the Princess Manor, Rong Le and her entourage were told their guards would be replaced, and even Xiao Sha would be kept at a post-house. Rong Le firmly asserted that Xiao Sha, sent by her brother, must remain by her side, forcing the officials to concede.
However, the manor's housekeeper, Madam Qiu Yi, insisted Xiao Sha stay in the outer courtyard. Rong Le established her authority, declaring that in her manor, her words were the rules and threatened to leave, forcing Qiu Yi to back down.
After settling in, Rong Le recalled her brother's words: Prince Wuyou was the sole disciple of Qin Yong, Northern Lin's former chief minister, and likely possessed "The Book of Mountains and Rivers," a legendary text said to grant its owner dominion over the world. Rong Le resolved to obtain this book within six months to secure her return to Western Qi. To leave the manor secretly, Rong Le had her maids create a diversion by announcing a feast and awards.
During the commotion, her attendant Ling Yue donned Rong Le's attire and a mask, while Rong Le slipped away to the Moon Embrace Teahouse. There, using a special ring as a signal, she met her agents and assumed the identity of Man Yao, the teahouse owner. This cover was designed for her to gather information about "The Book of Mountains and Rivers."
Her agents revealed that the book was connected to several major incidents sixteen years prior, including the deaths of Empress Fu Yuan and the Emperor's favorite concubine, and the subsequent execution of Qin Yong and his family, after which all of his writings were banned. They had found a lead in Miss Chen Yu, the "Flower Queen of the House of Fragrance," whose father was a former subordinate of Qin Yong. Rong Le instructed them to investigate her further.
Meanwhile, Wuyu brought Wuyou a rare tea from the Moon Embrace Teahouse, persuading him to visit. Upon arrival, they witnessed assassins attacking a man named Sir Zhao. During the struggle, a secret box fell. Rong Le signaled her agent to retrieve it, then kicked an empty box into the grass. Wuyu rushed to help Sir Zhao, while Wuyou fought off the assassins. Despite their efforts, Sir Zhao was killed.
Wuyu explained that Sir Zhao held evidence of high-ranking officials selling government positions and had sought to give it only to Wuyou. Wuyou, recognizing the formidable power behind the assassins, stated that without irrefutable evidence, reporting the case was futile. He instructed Wuyu to arrange a proper burial for Sir Zhao. Wuyou's men later reported that the assassins had all committed suicide and only an empty box was found.
Elsewhere, Minister Yu informed the Crown Prince of Sir Zhao's death and the missing papers. Relieved, he still cautioned the Crown Prince to remain vigilant and monitor Wuyou. Back at the teahouse, Rong Le, as Man Yao, was briefed on Wuyou's love for tea and his taboos: alcohol and touching women. When Wuyou and Wuyu approached, Man Yao claimed to be the owner and feigned ignorance, stating she was merely a bystander grateful for their intervention. Wuyou questioned her, showing her the empty box, but she maintained that she knew nothing about it or its contents.
