In the midst of a dark and stormy night, a woman in black galloped through a forest, skillfully dodging a barrage of arrows fired by relentless pursuers. She dismounted in a dense part of the woods, where she ambushed and killed the black-clad figures one by one. Just as she paused, a shadowy figure appeared behind her, its iron-like grip closing around her throat.
This experience turned out to be a dream, as Princess Rong Le awoke in a lavish bedroom in the Western Qi royal palace. Her brother, Emperor Rong Qi, explained her situation: she is Princess Rong Le of Western Qi, and to forge an alliance, she is betrothed to Northern Lin's Seventh Prince, Zongzheng Wuyou. However, she had suffered a concussion and lost her memories during a recent attempt to escape the arranged marriage.
The Emperor promised to help her regain them. Later, accompanied by her personal maid Ling Yue, Rong Le explored the imperial garden, hoping to jog her memory. She slipped away from Ling Yue, only to find everyone she encountered kneeling before her. Confused about her identity, she was approached by Rong Qi.
He led her to a familiar tea room, where he tried to evoke her past by brewing tea and playing her favorite song on the guqin, reassuring her that her memories would return. Back in her room, Rong Le found a poem and noted the handwriting wasn't hers. Before she could investigate, the Empress Dowager stormed in, insisting the marriage must proceed regardless of Rong Le's amnesia.
She revealed that the army of Chen was advancing, and Western Qi, with its depleted forces, could only survive by allying with Northern Lin. Rong Qi’s plea to delay the marriage was met with the Empress Dowager’s threat to take her own life, leaving him in anguish. Late that night, Rong Qi disguised Rong Le and smuggled her out of the palace to a hidden hut, which felt inexplicably familiar to her.
He explained that the different handwriting she saw was his, which she used to enjoy copying. He also revealed her true past: she was not raised in the palace but in the Cold Harem. Her mother, a peasant woman, was banished there while pregnant. During her time there, Rong Le secretly learned martial arts from a royal guard. Their conversation was interrupted by assassins. The non-martial Rong Qi was severely wounded while shielding her.
The sight of his injury triggered Rong Le’s dormant fighting skills, and she swiftly dispatched the attackers before rushing her brother back to the palace. The Empress Dowager later showed Rong Le the weak state of the Western Qi army and the empty treasury, presenting her with a stark choice: the marriage or a devastating war. For the sake of her people and her beloved brother, Rong Le accepted the marriage alliance and comforted Rong Qi by serving him tea.
Soon, ceremonial robes and jewelry filled the princess's chambers. On her departure day, a reluctant Rong Qi gave Rong Le a jade pendant for protection and assigned the skilled warrior Xiao Sha as her personal bodyguard. After a long journey, Rong Le’s entourage arrived at the Northern Lin capital, but Prince Zongzheng Wuyou was absent.
An official, Yang Wei, awkwardly tried to explain, but they were interrupted by the arrogant Prince Chen, who mocked Rong Le's rumored appearance and stated that his brother Wuyou could not be forced into the marriage. Before Rong Le could respond, a general arrived to summon her to the palace. Wearing a mask, Rong Le entered the hall and greeted the Emperor.
She explained that according to Western Qi custom, her mask could only be removed by her husband on their wedding day. Annoyed by his son's defiance, the Emperor sent the guards Wuyu and Captain Xiang to forcefully bring Prince Li to court. After a long wait, Zongzheng Wuyou finally made his entrance.
