As Nightbei tribespeople learned of the impending slaughter, they frantically sought a way out. Qi Hailian instructed Su and Liang to lead their tribe into the mountains to hide and remain silent, to avoid detection by the Chao Army. Meanwhile, the general overseeing the Nightbei operations was en route, but General Xie Yu'an remained unwilling to execute the Nightbei prisoners.

When the vanguard army arrived to search for escaped prisoners, Qi Hailian tried to deter them by claiming an epidemic among the female captives, but the soldiers insisted on entering. Jie Zhuying then intervened, blocking the soldiers and asserting that Emperor Yu Xiuming had granted him full authority over the Nightbei prisoners.

He boldly declared that he would assume all responsibility, believing the Emperor would not harm him and wishing to prevent further bloodshed, as he felt the Nightbei had already suffered enough. In the Great Chao capital, the Horoscope Department was busy compiling auspicious times for concubines to conceive imperial heirs, a significant concern given Emperor Yu Xiuming's lack of children. Ye Lingshuang, now tasked with these duties in the palace, was surprised to find Leng Tianxi among the concubines.

She inquired about Leng Tianxi and learned of her favored status with Yu Xiuming, a result of their shared experience on the battlefield. Leng Tianxi, recognizing Ye Lingshuang, immediately ordered an investigation. She later confronted Xie Yu'an, who, following Jie Haitian's instructions, claimed Jie Haitian had taken Ye Lingshuang. Leng Tianxi then reported this to Yu Xiuming. Upon learning that Ye Lingshuang was in the Bureau of Astrology, Yu Xiuming immediately went there, finding her dressed in an official robe.

He angrily confronted Supervisor Jie Haitian for harboring a Nightbei prisoner and allowing her to hold office, which was a blatant disregard for him and the law. Yu Xiuming ordered Ye Lingshuang's official robe to be removed, but she chose to take it off herself. Jie Haitian tried to explain, admitting his fault and requesting a private audience with the Emperor.

He revealed that his son, Jie Zhuying, had written home, stating that the Mirror of Youth had still not been found in Nightbei. He then explained that Ye Lingshuang possessed unique astrological talents, suggesting that if her sealed celestial power could be unleashed for the Great Chao, it would be beneficial. However, Yu Xiuming scoffed, recalling Ye Lingshuang's earlier audacious claim in his tent to become the Empress of Chao, and dismissed her as a cunning girl with petty tricks.

Despite Jie Haitian's insistence on her powerful celestial energy, Yu Xiuming remained unmoved, stating that she would pay for her audacity. Later, Yu Xiuming summoned Ye Lingshuang, still referring to her as his "Princess Zhuyan." He interrogated her about her presence in the Bureau of Astrology, threatening to enslave her if she didn't confess.

Ye Lingshuang cleverly replied that she was grateful to him for bringing her to Tianqi, as it allowed her to study astrology under Supervisor Jie Haitian, an opportunity denied to her in Nightbei where she was scorned as a "cursed one." Yu Xiuming challenged her, noting that the Great Chao already had Jie Haitian for guidance. Ye Lingshuang confidently declared she could surpass Jie Haitian if given a chance.

Amused by her confidence, Yu Xiuming gave her an opportunity: the Bureau of Astrology had failed to find an auspicious site for the upcoming Ceremony of Stars for ten days, and he tasked her with finding one within the next ten days. If she succeeded, she would be rewarded; if not, she would be executed for deceiving the Emperor.

Yu Xiuming then issued a decree, formally renaming Ye Lingshuang as Bai Lu and appointing her as the Leader of the Bureau of Astrology. The officials at the Bureau of Astrology were taken aback by Bai Lu's return and her new, formidable task. They worried that failure would bring calamity upon the entire bureau. Some expressed doubt that she, or even Supervisor Jie Haitian, could succeed.

Bai Lu, however, secretly believed there was more to the situation than just a difficult calculation and planned to probe Yu Xiuming further. Cloud Wen's spirit, residing in the amber stone on Bai Lu's neck, found two artifacts for her, but also urged her to focus on the task at hand, reminding her of the ten-day deadline.

Bai Lu, realizing that Supervisor Jie Haitian's reluctance to provide an auspicious site was intentional, understood that she could not rely solely on calculations. She suspected a hidden motive behind his inaction and decided to investigate further, aiming to test the Emperor's true intentions. Meanwhile, Fan Ruhui, fearing his declining influence in the Bureau of Astrology, sought an audience with Yu Xiuming.

He subtly suggested that Jie Haitian's delay in naming an auspicious site might be a form of protest against the Emperor. Fan Ruhui also mentioned rumors about a female official in the Bureau of Astrology, hoping to turn Yu Xiuming against Jie Haitian. However, Yu Xiuming revealed he was well aware of Jie Haitian's independent nature and loyalty, and that Bai Lu's appointment was his own doing, to test her.

Yu Xiuming then instructed Fan Ruhui to personally convey the message to Jie Haitian to expedite the process, but Fan Ruhui had already sent his second son, Fan Zheng, to investigate Bai Lu, instructing him to be discreet. Bai Lu later overheard a conversation between Fan Ruhui and Jie Haitian.

Fan Ruhui was urging Jie Haitian to submit an auspicious site, revealing that the Emperor intended to reclaim military power by nominating a protectorate governor at the Ceremony of Stars, and that Jie Haitian's delay was a tactic to avoid handing over his authority. Understanding this, Bai Lu visited Yu Xiuming, feigning concern about his visits to the harem and subtly revealing the information she had overheard about Jie Haitian and Fan Ruhui's conversation.

Yu Xiuming, fully aware of Jie Haitian's independent nature and loyalty, dismissed her attempts at "petty smarts" and reiterated that her priority was to determine the auspicious site and save her own head. Bai Lu understood that Jie Haitian would not endorse her calculated auspicious site, so she needed to find another approach. Cloud Wen's spirit informed Bai Lu that the Mirror of Youth was located in the Sea of Bitterness.

This news, while important for Jie Haitian, saddened Bai Lu as she worried about the fate of Qi Hairui and Yi Wuyou, fearing Qi Hairui might have met with an accident. Bai Lu resolved to leave the palace the next day. She visited the Moon Tower, a place Yi Wuyou had mentioned, hoping to find him, but learned he had sold the business and left Tianqi.

While there, she overheard common folk discussing the Ceremony of Stars, expressing their displeasure that an auspicious site selection would inevitably lead to forced relocations and demolitions for some residents. This sparked a new idea in Bai Lu. Unbeknownst to Bai Lu, Hejin, the current manager of the Moon Tower, recognized her as "Miss Ye" and maintained her hidden identity to protect Yi Wuyou's whereabouts.

Separately, Director Di, noticing Bai Lu's absence from the Bureau of Astrology, complained to Jie Haitian about her irresponsibility and demanded strict punishment. Jie Haitian, however, left the matter to Director Di to handle. Meanwhile, in a desolate location, Yi Wuyou had managed to rescue Ye Jingqing from the Nightbei war, but she was severely injured and on the verge of death, with traditional remedies proving ineffective.
