The beautiful lawyer Cheng Yao was forced to have dinner with a client, using the opportunity to discuss contract details. To make commuting easier, she rented an apartment near the firm. Unexpectedly, she ran into the man she had thought was a “gigolo. ” What’s more, they encountered a situation where the same apartment had been rented out to both of them. Unable to resolve the dispute, they had to call the landlord. The landlord kept apologizing—he was in the middle of a divorce with his wife.

He had rented the place to Cheng Yao, while his wife had rented it to the man. Neither side was willing to give up the lease. The landlord then suggested they share the apartment, and even mentioned that he would soon file for divorce, which could be Cheng Yao’s first big case and bring her her first bucket of gold.

Cheng Yao was persuaded, and when the man heard she worked at Junheng, he voluntarily offered to pay her two months’ rent in exchange for just staying there for three days. Cheng Yao thought she had landed a great deal and agreed. Although it was only for three days, Cheng Yao felt disdain for the man's profession, so she laid down three house rules—most importantly, that he was not allowed to bring women home.

The man was confused until Cheng Yao repeatedly emphasized her point, and he finally realized she had mistaken him for someone in an indecent profession. He was so angry he almost broke his nose. Cheng Yao secretly listened to his voice messages and realized he was actually quite professional. In fact, he sounded somewhat like a lawyer, using many legal terms and arguments. This made Cheng Yao very curious.

What she didn’t know was that this man was none other than Qian Heng, one of the partners at the law firm where she was about to start work. The next day, Cheng Yao arrived at Junheng early, hoping to make a good first impression. Someone briefed her on the firm’s background, including its five partners—though Qian Heng’s photo was not on the wall. Cheng Yao was appointed by Qian Heng to be his assistant.

Everyone expressed concern for her, but Cheng Yao didn’t understand why and thought it was a great opportunity to learn. That was, until she saw Qian Heng walk in—it turned out to be the very man she was sharing an apartment with. Cheng Yao repeatedly apologized to Qian Heng, but he didn’t press the issue. He only emphasized that Cheng Yao should manage her emotions well and not develop inappropriate feelings for him.

The reason he had dismissed his previous thirteen assistants was exactly because of this. Cheng Yao went home and told her best friend about it, who sighed that this felt just like a plot from an idol drama. Cheng Yao then found out her best friend was pregnant—with twins no less. She was happy for her but also worried because the wedding had yet to happen.

Cheng Yao heard some noise from Qian Heng’s room and couldn’t fall asleep, so she went in to check. She discovered that it was a phonograph playing. After turning it off, she accidentally knocked over and broke a root carving. Terrified, she hurried to fix it. Just then, Qian Heng came back. She rushed out and made up an excuse about cleaning, but Qian Heng still found out.

That carving was his treasured item, and he was so angry that he kicked her out of the house. Cheng Yao had nowhere to go, and hotel prices were too high. In desperation, she remembered the company’s break room was fully equipped. Since it was part of the employee benefits, she decided to make use of it herself.
