Upon Lingyue's death, several tribal elders and generals in Shanling, seeing the throne vacant and the nation unstable, began plotting for self-rule, with some recommending Jing Xiu as the next State Master and others supporting Princess Baoqing. Jing Xiu, however, asked if anyone had recommended Princess Lingxi. Jiuchen, after learning from Siming about Lingyue's death, rushed to Tianxi Palace to comfort Lingxi.

Qingyao examined Lingyue's body and determined that she died from the dissipation of her spiritual power, but Jiuchen suspected foul play, especially since Chi Bi of the Xuan Bird Tribe had visited Lingyue. Jiuchen confronted Jing Xiu, accusing him of murdering Lingyue and silencing Granny Shi, but Jing Xiu denied it, challenging him to provide evidence.

Lingxi also suspected Jing Xiu, recalling that her mother, though weak, did not appear to be at her end, and Jing Xiu was present when she passed. Qingyao also pointed out that power struggles often lead to betrayal and violence, even within families. Meanwhile, the Phoenix Tribe's bloodline was believed to be severed.

State Preceptor Jing Xiu, seeking to stabilize the Shanling Tribe, nominated Lingxi, who possessed the true Phoenix Tribe bloodline, as the next State Master, presenting the jade seal to her. Lingxi, initially hesitant, questioned Jing Xiu's choice, but ultimately decided to accept the position to investigate her mother's death and stabilize the kingdom. Jing Xiu assured her that he would protect her, reminding her that, as the State Master's biological daughter, she was the best choice.

This decision angered Baoqing, who confessed her love for Jing Xiu and demanded to know why he would allow Lingxi to take the position. Jing Xiu stated that he only regarded Baoqing as a younger sister. Baoqing, in a fit of rage, threatened to reveal that Jing Xiu was the true murderer of Lingyue, but Jing Xiu warned her not to harm Lingxi and confined her to her quarters.

Jiuchen, upon learning of Lingxi's potential ascension, found her at Fuyun Hall, concerned about her taking on the State Master position, especially given the Shanling Tribe's rule prohibiting marriage with outsiders, which led to her father Mohuan's death. He offered to handle the matter himself, but Lingxi insisted it was her duty. Jiuchen fiercely declared that he would not let anyone take her away from him, but Lingxi reassured him that she would not remain in the position for long.

Jiuchen then declared he would not wait long, stating that if she couldn't swiftly find the true murderer and a suitable successor, he would personally lead his army to attack the Shanling Realm and abolish the rule regarding inter-tribe marriage. Shisan expressed his concerns to Lingxi about Yuli's constant visits to Fuyun Hall to gain Jiuchen's attention, suggesting Lingxi should secure her place in Jiuchen's heart.

Jiuchen overheard this and punished Shisan by sending him to the hall of Lord of the Furnace to "cook rice." Despite Baoqing's resistance, Jing Xiu's efforts culminated in Lingxi's ascension to the throne. The enthronement ceremony was attended by many. However, Baoqing feigned illness to distract her guards and requested a private audience with Lingxi, claiming she would reveal the truth behind their mother's death. As Lingxi's Senior Sister left the room, Baoqing attacked Lingxi with a curved blade.

Jing Xiu intervened, killing Baoqing and stating that he had warned her not to harm Lingxi. Following Baoqing's death, her maidservant, under duress from Jing Xiu, publicly accused Baoqing of murdering the former State Master Lingyue, claiming jealousy and a desire to seize the throne. Lingxi remained skeptical, and the maidservant elaborated, explaining how Baoqing tricked Lingyue into using her life bead for healing, then destroyed it, causing Lingyue's death.

Jing Xiu corroborated parts of the story, claiming he had not informed Lingxi earlier out of fear of causing further animosity between the sisters. Lingxi remained half-convinced. Huayan, Lingxi's senior sister, who had overheard a troubling conversation between Jing Xiu and Baoqing, grew deeply suspicious and sought him out to confirm her fears. Huayan confronted Jing Xiu, directly questioning him about the conversation she overheard, asking if he was afraid of Lingxi knowing the truth and seeking revenge.

Jing Xiu admitted that she had heard correctly and confessed to being Lingyue's killer. Devastated and with her faith shattered, Huayan bowed to Jing Xiu and left. Moments later, Jing Xiu instructed Heichi to eliminate Huayan, and Heichi brutally killed her on her way back. Subsequently, Baoqing's maidservant, accused as an accomplice in the former State Master's murder, had her immortal bones removed and was exiled to the barren lands.

As Heichi escorted her there, he attempted to kill her to silence her permanently. However, Kaiyang, acting under Jiuchen's orders to locate the maid, arrived just in time, killed Heichi, and rescued the maid.

Jiuchen then brought the maid directly to Lingxi, where she fully revealed the truth: Jing Xiu had murdered both Lingyue and Baoqing because she overheard Jing Xiu and General Chibi discussing how the late State Master would never forgive them if she awakened, prompting them to act first to save themselves. Around the same time, Lingxi realized Huayan was missing, adding to her growing unease. Upon hearing the maid's detailed accusation against Jing Xiu, Lingxi's suspicions solidified.

She immediately summoned Jing Xiu to confront him directly. Jing Xiu vehemently denied any knowledge of Heichi's attempt to kill the maid. Jiuchen then proposed using a magical technique that could verify the truth of a person's words, though it would cause significant pain and spiritual damage to the subject. The maid readily agreed to undergo the test.

Jing Xiu, visibly concerned but unable to refuse the investigation, instead turned to Lingxi, questioning why she would believe a criminal over him. Lingxi, struggling with the horrifying realization that the man who had once risked his life for her could be her mother's killer, tearfully demanded to know if he was indeed the murderer.
