Light Beyond the Reed Episode 13 Recap
> Light Beyond the Reed Recap
Huang Guifen expressed her deep worry to Qin Nan about her son, Nianwen, who had been secluded in his room, determined to seek justice for his sister, Ye Sibei. Qin Nan immediately offered to speak with Nianwen. Guifen then inquired about Ye Sibei's condition and, upon hearing that Sibei was struggling to eat and sleep, decided to go to the market to buy apples to steam for her, a comfort food from Sibei’s childhood.
At the market, Guifen overheard Li Mingyu, a long-time acquaintance, gossiping about Ye Sibei, claiming Sibei had always been "unruly" and "wild." Enraged, Guifen confronted Li Mingyu, throwing the purchased apples at her. She passionately defended Sibei's good character, reminding Li Mingyu how Sibei had tutored Li's child and shared meals with them in the past.
Guifen then loudly declared to the onlookers that she would tear the mouth apart of anyone who dared to speak ill of her daughter again. Qin Nan quickly intervened to pull her away from the scene. Back home, Guifen turned her anger on her husband, Ye Ling, who was sitting silently, concerned about his "face." Guifen lashed out, proclaiming that she no longer cared about her reputation, only about protecting her daughter.
She furiously questioned his inaction, reminding him of his earlier resolve to call the police and contrasting it with his current suggestion to ignore the gossip. She even suggested that perhaps they should have taken the money for a private settlement. Ye Ling, realizing his insensitivity, apologized for speaking without thinking. Nianwen, unable to cope with the injustice, went to his former mentor, Meng Xin, at the law firm, believing Meng Xin was colluding with Fan Jiancheng.
Despite Meng Xin's attempts to evade him by claiming he was on a business trip, Nianwen spotted him and confronted him, demanding to know how Fan Jiancheng had obtained the photograph of Ye Sibei with her eyes open. Meng Xin invoked lawyer-client confidentiality, which only further infuriated Nianwen. Nianwen accused Meng Xin of aiding a rapist and fabricating evidence, leading to a physical altercation.
Qin Nan arrived and separated them, while Meng Xin warned Nianwen that he would call the police if Nianwen returned. As Qin Nan took Nianwen away, Nianwen confided in his brother-in-law, expressing his profound despair and regretting having stopped Sibei from reporting the incident to the police earlier. Qin Nan comforted Nianwen, urging him to remain strong for their parents and Sibei.
He assured Nianwen that justice would eventually prevail, but it would be a long and arduous process, and they needed to unite to support their family. In a flashback to the night of the incident, Fan Jiancheng was seen at a dinner party, subtly instructing a waiter to deliver a glass of "water" to his colleague, Ye Sibei, who he implied had "drunk too much." This suggested he had drugged her.
Tao Jie was also seen assisting Fan Jiancheng with important documents, hinting at her ongoing involvement in his schemes, even during his imprisonment. Later, Zhao Ming confronted Fan Jiancheng at his company, attempting to terminate their professional relationship and offering a severance package. Fan Jiancheng, with utter contempt, rejected the offer, demanding 10% of the company's shares and three million yuan in compensation.
He threatened to expose Zhao Ming's past wrongdoings if his demands were not met, then walked away with an air of defiance. Wenwen's teacher, Ms. Jin, visited Zhao Shuhui, expressing concern over Wenwen's sudden withdrawal, silence, and frequent zoning out in class. Ms. Jin also shared a disturbing drawing Wenwen had made in a psychology session. Later, Ye Nianwen, now working as a ride-hailing driver, unexpectedly encountered Captain Zhang.
Nianwen shared his theory that Fan Jiancheng had used Ye Sibei's phone to send a fabricated "safe at home" message to Chuchu and then deleted the message to cover his tracks. Captain Zhang cautioned Nianwen against interfering in the police investigation and advised him not to abandon his legal career. Meanwhile, Captain Zhang was dining with Lin Feng when he observed a waiter serving water.
This mundane act sparked a revelation: they should revisit all witness statements, not for what they explicitly contained, but for what was subtly missing. Lin Feng, who had initially believed Captain Zhang was giving up the case, was surprised by his mentor’s new perspective. Zhao Shuhui confronted Fan Jiancheng, who was live-streaming to earn money, warning him not to damage their daughter's reputation by publicly discussing the case.
Fan Jiancheng, feigning sincerity, promised to cease discussing the matter online and asked Zhao Shuhui to call him by his first name again. However, the moment Zhao Shuhui left, his expression turned sinister. Huang Guifen, heartbroken by Sibei's gaunt appearance, urged her and Qin Nan to leave Nancheng and start anew, offering her life savings to help them escape the public scrutiny.
Ye Sibei, however, adamantly refused, declaring that leaving would brand her as a "deserter" and validate the stigma she was fighting to shed. Shortly after, Fan Jiancheng and Meng Xin appeared in an online interview for "Nancheng Stories." Meng Xin, in a seemingly impartial but subtly damaging statement, suggested that "Ms. Ye" be given an opportunity to "turn over a new leaf" and "start anew." Watching this broadcast, Huang Guifen suddenly collapsed. She was rushed to the hospital and diagnosed with a sudden cerebral infarction. The relentless pressure and emotional toll of these events left Ye Sibei feeling utterly suffocated.
