Jiang Lai and her allies, however, recognized the gravity of the situation, viewing it as an opportune moment to uncover incriminating evidence against Zhou Mingde. They deduced that Sun Wei, having previously left Zhou Mingde, must have possessed such evidence and, in her plan to flee abroad with her son, the evidence might have been entrusted to Chengzhen. Unbeknownst to Li Tingjiang, Zhang Ran had anticipated such a move and pre-emptively installed a hidden listening device in Zhou Mingde's hospital room, recording Li Tingjiang's entire incriminating conversation. At the shareholders' meeting, amidst rampant company gossip regarding Zhang Ran's true identity and alleged attempts to seize assets, Zhou Mingde surprisingly announced his resignation as chairman, citing the need to avoid further trouble for the company.
He then declared he had transferred 25% of his shares to Li Tingjiang and recommended him as the acting chairman, a motion quickly approved by a show of hands.
