Master Ruan, who is known for being serious in sparring and whose sword can draw blood, engages in a practice match. Feeling scared due to a previous internal injury, Lu Zizheng asks Gu Qingqiao to block for him. Gu Qingqiao steps forward and challenges Ruan Shiqiong, declaring her ambition to be the second best in the world, conceding the first position to him. Ruan Shiqiong accepts her challenge.
As they spar briefly, Gu Qingqiao is quickly defeated and, in desperation, holds onto Ruan Shiqiong's leg to stop him. Just then, the class bell rings, and the disciples quickly disperse for lunch. Later, Gu Qingqiao expresses her fear of Master Ruan's expression during the sparring. Lu Zizheng says that once his injury heals in a few days, Ruan Shiqiong won't be able to find him, but this means they can't go to the forbidden area for now.
Gu Qingqiao confesses that she snuck into Tianlu Pavilion last night and ran into Master Ruan, worrying that he might have discovered their activities. Lu Zizheng reassures her that if they had been discovered, they wouldn't be sitting there peacefully. Gu Qingqiao still suspects something is amiss in Tianlu Pavilion and plans to return in a few days. Shaoyi is concerned about his uncle, Duan Yu, whose injuries are severe, causing him to have a fever.
He notes the lack of many rare herbs in the Fire Crane Tribe compared to Changqing. Shaoyi suggests returning to Changqing, but Xing Si points out that the journey would be too difficult for Duan Yu in his current condition. Xiaowu, overhearing their worries, offers to take Shaoyi to the Lord Witch Doctor's tent to pray with the tribe's sacred treasure, which she believes can help heal him.
She explains that the treasure protected their tribe from the Moon Wolf Tribe, violent prairie bandits who often raid them, killing the men and selling the women and children, forcing them to constantly move their camps. Xiaowu believes praying with the treasure while the Lord Witch Doctor is away will make Duan Yu recover quickly. The Lord Witch Doctor returns unexpectedly and is displeased that strangers (Shaoyi, who Xiaowu claimed was her slave) have entered a forbidden area.
The Lord Witch Doctor warns them that the Fire Crane Tribe is not safe due to the threat of the Moon Wolf Tribe and advises them to leave as soon as Duan Yu's injuries are healed. A notice is posted announcing the selection of a Grand Steward, who will have powers comparable to the Sect Leader, including maintaining rules and improving the environment. Crucially, the Grand Steward gains free access to Tianlu Pavilion and the forbidden area.
Gu Qingqiao sees this as an opportunity to search for the Black Wood Human-shaped Sword. Ten disciples sign up for the selection process, which includes five rounds of written and physical tests, including swordsmanship and arithmetic. In the swordsmanship round, Lu Zizheng, also known as Bai, participates and wins his match but later chooses to withdraw from the competition. The final round is an arithmetic test between Gu Qingqiao, known as Qing, and First Senior Bao Quancai.
The task is to solve the classic chicken and rabbit problem within a time limit. Although Gu Qingqiao identifies the correct answer, First Senior Bao Quancai is declared the winner of the round and acclaimed as the Grand Steward. Meanwhile, Shaoyi, persuaded by Xiaowu, attempts to steal the sacred object from the Lord Witch Doctor's tent to heal Duan Yu. Xing Si stays outside as a lookout while Xiaowu and Shaoyi sneak in.
They retrieve the object but are discovered by the Lord Witch Doctor upon returning to Duan Yu's side, where the Lord Witch Doctor was already treating him. The Lord Witch Doctor is angered by the theft, emphasizing the treasure's great significance to the tribe. Shaoyi and Xing Si admit their involvement, stating their intention was solely to help Duan Yu, and Shaoyi takes full responsibility.
The Lord Witch Doctor, acknowledging the past help the Changqing Duan family provided to their tribe, decides to overlook the theft but reiterates the need for them to leave the unsafe area immediately. However, Duan Yu notices a portrait of Qiao (Gu Qingqiao) on the sacred object. Intrigued, he tells the Lord Witch Doctor that his injuries are not yet fully healed and requests to stay for a few more days.
After Xiaowu also pleads, the Lord Witch Doctor grants his request. Later, Gu Qingqiao, now acting as the newly appointed Grand Steward, uses the official token to enter the inner chamber of Tianlu Pavilion, a section usually only accessible to the Sect Leader. She is specifically looking for information about the Black Wood Human-shaped Sword.
Searching through the texts, she finds a record detailing how the Xiling Sect's founder discovered the sword and used its immense power to become invincible, establishing the sect. The record also mentions the founder's disappearance and a warning that the sword grants great power but demands a huge price. While she is in the pavilion, Ruan Shiqiong appears and asks what she is reading.
Gu Qingqiao fabricates an excuse, claiming she couldn't sleep and was looking at a cookbook to bore herself to sleep. She asks to borrow the cookbook. Suddenly, Ruan Shiqiong collapses, seemingly losing consciousness and having no heartbeat. Gu Qingqiao immediately begins performing emergency first aid on him. Unfortunately, some fellow disciples witness this from outside and misinterpret her actions, assuming she is engaged in a romantic affair with Ruan Shiqiong.
Rumors of a secret relationship between Gu Qingqiao and Ruan Shiqiong quickly spread throughout the Xiling Sect. Gu Qingqiao brings food to Ruan Shiqiong during his recovery. He expresses his delight in being able to taste the food, having seemingly recovered a lost sense of taste. The rumors cause tension among the disciples. Man Tianxing, a fellow disciple, reacts coldly to Gu Qingqiao, asking to switch sleeping spots and expressing veiled disapproval.
Lu Zizheng notices Gu Qingqiao's distress and confronts her. She explains that she went to Tianlu Pavilion to investigate the forbidden area and the Black Wood Human-shaped Sword, where she found the information about the painful price required to wield its power. She admits she is afraid of burdening Lu Zizheng with this danger. Lu Zizheng dismisses her fears, revealing his own difficult past. Born an illegitimate child of a noble family, he was forced to hide constantly.
When his family was attacked by bandits, he survived by hiding among corpses and vowed from that day forward that his fate would be his own and he would never allow anyone to easily take his life. He declares that he has already crawled out of hell and is willing to face life and death alongside her.
Later, the disciples directly question Gu Qingqiao about her relationship with Ruan Shiqiong, asking if she has feelings for him beyond that of a fellow disciple and if she kissed him. Gu Qingqiao firmly denies having any romantic feelings, stating her admiration for Ruan Shiqiong is based on his strength and the bond of fellow discipleship, and she swears she did not kiss him. However, Second Senior insists he saw something. Ruan Shiqiong arrives, having heard the rumors, and clarifies the situation, explaining that the misunderstanding arose from his actions and that "he" was the one who kissed her.
