Tang Sheng happened to pass by, and Jian Mingshu took the initiative to greet her, but Tang Sheng walked by coldly with a veil over her face. The old woman said that she had heard Tang Sheng’s house caught fire when she was young, and her face was burned at an early age, so she wore a veil all year round. It was about a year ago that she came to the academy.
The Princess of Wen’an also began to suspect Xie Xu a year ago. Tang Sheng was thin and frail—one could easily mistake her for a woman. Besides, neither Song Qingzhao nor Lu Chang had ever heard of this person. Jian Mingshu deliberately tripped in front of Tang Sheng and went to her room to ask for medicinal powder for wounds, while carefully observing her surroundings, but found nothing suspicious.
Jian Mingshu purposely brought up Xie Xu, yet Tang Sheng showed no abnormal reaction and even took the lead in asking her a bunch of questions. Su Tangli politely declined his concern, saying she had already found someone she could rely on for life—that person was Xie Xu. In the past, Su Tangli had been tortured nearly to death in the Office of Entertainment. To seek revenge, she turned to Xie Xu. Five years ago, Xie Xu fell in love with her at first sight. Later, when she begged him to save her, he actually agreed.
Lu Chang reminded her that the Princess of Wen’an was already investigating. Xie Xu didn’t want Lu Chang to tell Jian Mingshu about her identity. It had been extremely difficult for her to escape the Office of Entertainment. But Lu Chang wanted to send her away, as Jian Mingshu was determined to solve the case and he didn’t want to get involved. Su Tangli said Jian Mingshu had evidence in her hands; Mr.
Su had passed clues to Jian Mingshu when she was imprisoned. This made Lu Chang realize that he had indeed misunderstood Jian Jinhai back then. At night, Prince Rui came to Yin Shujun’s room. To avoid him, Yin Shujun bathed for a long time. Seeing she couldn’t avoid him, she had no choice but to come out. Yin Shujun didn’t understand why he came to her room.
The two of them only had a pure cooperative relationship—there was no need for anything beyond that. Prince Rui pressured her about the recent rumors. Since she had stirred up the situation, he couldn’t let her down either. He carried Yin Shujun horizontally to the bed, hooked her chin, and was about to kiss her. When he saw her nervously gripping the bedpost, Prince Rui mischievously found an excuse and left.
Su Tangli was convinced that Jian Mingshu held evidence from Mr. Su, but Lu Chang insisted that she couldn’t be agitated, and he was determined to protect Jian Mingshu for life. Su Tangli was eager to overturn the case, but Lu Chang demanded she not approach Jian Mingshu. There was more bitterness in her words. Jian Mingshu came to deliver flowers and herbs to the old woman, when suddenly the name plaque fell. Song Qingzhao saved Jian Mingshu in time.
Jian Mingshu complained that Lu Chang should not have saved Lu Wencai. Su Tangli was also injured. When Jian Mingshu tried to check on her, she limped away. Song Qingzhao had hurt himself while saving her, and Jian Mingshu was very worried. He, unlike usual, even pretended to cry out in pain in front of her. Jian Mingshu was about to apply medicine to him personally when Lu Chang quickly snatched it away, afraid Jian Mingshu might touch him.
Jian Mingshu kept thinking about Su Tangli’s reaction today, while Lu Chang thought she was worried about Song Qingzhao. Jian Mingshu casually said it was just comfortable being around him—and she even dreamed about him. Jian Mingshu helped Su Tangli up, likely having already realized her true identity. Lu Chang hoped she would leave as soon as possible, but Su Tangli made excuses, saying leaving now would raise suspicion.
Jian Mingshu discovered that Lu Chang had gone to the rear courtyard but lied, saying he had gone to the library, which made her suspicious. That day, Xie Xu deliberately set a trap for Jian Mingshu. Halfway through the chase, she realized it was an ambush, but it was already too late. A man in black drew his blade and charged at her. This man was not sent by Xie Xu.
Hearing her cries for help, Su Tangli instinctively wanted to save her but was stopped by Xie Xu. Jian Mingshu collapsed from exhaustion. As the attacker closed in, she lured him into Xie Xu’s trap and tried her best to flee, but fainted from exhaustion. Song Qingzhao and Lu Chang were frantically looking for her. Su Tangli sent someone to tell them that Jian Mingshu had gone toward the back mountain.
Lu Chang found the unconscious Jian Mingshu near the trap and brought her back to his room to tend to her carefully. In her dream, Jian Mingshu saw that man again. As he was about to leave, she instinctively called out for him to stay. Lu Chang was pulled close by Jian Mingshu, but she called out Song Qingzhao’s name, leaving Lu Chang heartbroken.
Jian Mingshu believed the assassin wasn’t arranged by Xie Xu, but Song Qingzhao was furious—whether it was him or not, he hadn’t stepped in to help. That made him no different from an accomplice. To ensure her safety, Lu Chang wanted to send her back. But Song Qingzhao said there would still be unknown dangers outside and suggested keeping her close for protection. Lu Chang finally agreed. Jian Mingshu said she was sure Tang Sheng was a woman.
Lu Chang remained silent. Lu Chang went and beat Xie Xu up, warning him that if he dared hurt Jian Mingshu again, he would pay even if it cost him his life. As for Su Tangli, Lu Chang mocked him for being unable to let go of Su Tangli’s affection while still coveting the Princess of Wen’an’s status—if he couldn’t take responsibility, he should just come clean.
Su Tangli told Lu Chang she didn’t want Jian Mingshu to get hurt either, and Lu Chang didn’t blame her. When the two met again, Jian Mingshu accidentally saw them. She couldn’t understand why Lu Chang kept it from her. Su Tangli explained her background, and Lu Chang had no choice but to keep it secret for her. Jian Mingshu didn’t press further, but because of the Princess of Wen’an’s request, she had to ask clearly.
Jian Mingshu knew she had her difficulties, but that was no excuse to hurt others. But to Su Tangli, Xie Xu was a lifeline! Jian Mingshu wasn’t moved. Wrong was wrong. Lu Chang may have kept the secret for her, but Jian Mingshu had no such obligation.
