Xu Zhi and her father went to visit her maternal grandmother. Xu Zhi messaged Chen Luzhou, saying she probably wouldn’t be able to return today. Chen Luzhou told her to come back soon and bring his suitcase. Xu Zhi asked if there was anything important in it, and Chen Luzhou replied that he was out of underwear.
Xu Zhi asked her father what he thought, and her father said he didn’t mean to make things difficult for Chen Luzhou—he actually thought Chen Luzhou was pretty decent. He added that back in ninth grade, he had invited Director Wei and asked Xu Zhi to bring Chen Luzhou along for a meal. Chen Luzhou took Chen Xingqi home, where Chen Jishen was also present.
Chen Jishen admitted it was his fault—Chen Luzhou had never caused trouble growing up, had done well, and many people envied him. It was himself who ruined the family. He gave Chen Luzhou a red envelope, saying this would always be his home. Chen Luzhou didn’t accept it and said he would come back to visit when he had time. Fu Yuqing came to see Chen Luzhou and gave him his suitcase.
Fu Yuqing said that since Chen Luzhou was so good-looking and performed well academically, it would be understandable if he wanted to mess around. But if he did, then he shouldn’t come back to Xu Zhi. Chen Luzhou said that wouldn’t happen. Fu Yuqing left first. Xu Zhi returned, and the two of them went shopping at the supermarket together. Xu Zhi said she wanted to prepare a gift for Director Wei.
Chen Luzhou asked what made Xu Zhi change her mind. Xu Zhi said her father had played both father and mother roles over the years, and it hadn’t been easy. Now that he had Director Wei, someone could look after him. Chen Luzhou and Director Wei came over for dinner, and they happened to run into each other outside. Director Wei brought a gift for Xu Zhi.
Xu Zhi asked Chen Luzhou if the things he brought were for her, and he said they were all for her father. As the dishes were served, Xu Zhi’s father made Chen Luzhou try a bit of each one and asked if they tasted good. Chen Luzhou said they were delicious. Xu Zhi’s father said he was just checking if Chen Luzhou and Xu Zhi could keep eating like this for a long time.
Director Wei told Xu Zhi to open the gift she brought—it turned out to be a helmet. Director Wei said Xu Zhi’s father had shown her photos of Xu Zhi as a child, and there were a lot of pictures of her riding bikes, so she decided to give her that. Xu Zhi’s father got drunk and told Xu Zhi to bring a hair tie over so he could teach Chen Luzhou how to tie a ponytail.
He ended up putting several ponytails in Chen Luzhou’s hair. When Chen Luzhou was about to leave, Director Wei told Xu Zhi to walk him out—she would take care of her father. Xu Zhi walked Chen Luzhou home, and he gave her a gift—a felt craft he had made himself. Xu Zhi told Chen Luzhou just to give her his bank card, and he gave her the password.
Chen Luzhou’s mother heard from Chen Xingqi that he was spending the New Year at Xu Zhi’s house, so she came over, not expecting it to be someone she knew. She said that when she was younger, she didn’t understand things and that it would be better not to tell the children about this. Xu Zhi’s father agreed. Xu Zhi and Chen Luzhou happened to return and overheard them but didn’t know what was going on.
Xu Zhi tested her father afterward, but he didn’t say anything. She told Chen Luzhou that someone had indeed been in a coma for two or three years after a car accident—that person was Fu Yuqing. Chen Luzhou went to his mother and asked if it was Fu Yuqing. His mother asked if Xu Zhi’s father had told him.
Chen Luzhou said Xu Zhi had mentioned that her father had a simple circle of friends, and combined with other clues, it wasn’t hard to figure out. His mother admitted it. Back then, she and Fu Yuqing had dated for several years. When she found out she was pregnant, she proposed marriage, but Fu Yuqing refused—he thought they were too young and didn’t want to get married. So she left.
Xu Zhi’s mother had guessed it was Chen Luzhou who wanted to ask and told Xu Zhi about it. After Fu Yuqing woke up, he did want to find Chen Luzhou, but by then Chen Luzhou had grown up and was unrecognizable to him, so he asked Chen Luzhou’s mother for help. Chen Luzhou’s mother said Fu Yuqing couldn’t be a good father, so she lied and said Chen Luzhou had already been adopted and took him home herself.
Xu Zhi couldn’t find Chen Luzhou anywhere and couldn’t reach him by phone. She was very anxious and wanted to go out and look for him, but then Chen Luzhou came back.
