Xiaoman, still unsettled by Shen Chenyang’s earlier words, felt restless in her hospital room. She decided to seek out Zuo An, knowing he was at the same hospital accompanying Anning for rehabilitation. Downstairs, Xiaoman saw Zuo An and Anning in a seemingly intimate embrace—Anning had stumbled, and Zuo An caught her, leading Anning to quickly kiss him. Both Xiaoman and the arriving Shen Chenyang witnessed this. Xiaoman was shocked, while Shen Chenyang was enraged.
He immediately confronted Zuo An, demanding to know what they were doing and intending to physically fight him. Xiaoman tried to intervene, explaining to Shen Chenyang that things weren't as they appeared, but Shen Chenyang was too angry to listen, urging Xiaoman to see the truth of the situation. In the ensuing struggle, Xiaoman pushed Shen Chenyang away to protect Zuo An, causing Shen Chenyang to stumble back onto some medical equipment.
Soon after, Shen Chenyang’s face changed dramatically, and he fainted. Zuo An and Xiaoman anxiously called his name. Shen Chenyang was rushed to the emergency room. Waiting outside, Zuo An quickly clarified to Xiaoman that the incident with Anning was a misunderstanding and an accident, stating he hadn’t expected Anning’s actions and had only caught her to prevent a fall. Xiaoman, still reeling, asked why he hadn't avoided her and questioned if he still harbored feelings for Anning.
Zuo An vehemently denied it, swearing that Anning held no place in his heart. Although Xiaoman remained upset, Zuo An apologized repeatedly for causing her discomfort. Shen Chenyang’s sister, Shen Xiyue, arrived and immediately accused Xiaoman of pushing her brother. Just then, the doctor emerged, informing them that Shen Chenyang’s heart condition had worsened, though he was out of immediate danger. It was then revealed that Shen Chenyang suffered from congenital heart disease, a fact he had hidden.
Xiaoman felt a crushing wave of guilt, but Zuo An reassured her that she couldn't have known. The doctor explained that a heart transplant was Shen Chenyang’s only hope for survival, with a fifty percent success rate, but for unknown reasons, Shen Chenyang consistently refused the procedure. When Xiaoman entered, Shen Chenyang, in his usual playful manner, made light of his condition, even joking about creating a clothing brand called "Heart Disease" or "CHD." Xiaoman urged him to be serious, expressing concern, but Shen Chenyang reassured her that he wouldn't die and admitted to having her diary, which he claimed Lin Nana gave him. Xiaoman was shocked to learn he'd read it, though he denied having done so.
Observing Xiaoman’s positive influence on Shen Chenyang, Shen Xiyue decided Xiaoman was the key to persuading him. Shen Xiyue later spoke with Xiaoman, describing Shen Chenyang as an attention-seeker who treated life like a game, but explained this behavior stemmed from a deep-seated fear of death.
She revealed that his refusal to graduate was not due to poor grades but because a doctor once suggested he might not live past college, leading him to believe that not graduating would somehow prevent his death. Shen Xiyue then, with an undeniable tone, pressed Xiaoman to persuade Shen Chenyang to undergo the surgery.
She also sternly warned Xiaoman to keep Zuo An away from her brother, reminding Xiaoman that she still owed her 300,000 for her classmate’s mother’s surgery, implying that Xiaoman's current good fortune was due to Shen Chenyang. Xiaoman agreed to help persuade Shen Chenyang but protested Zuo An’s exclusion, to which Shen Xiyue firmly stated she would not allow anything to interfere with her brother's treatment.
Xiaoman and Zuo An attempted to persuade Shen Chenyang together, but their initial efforts were unsuccessful. Shen Chenyang remained adamant, even stating that Zuo An’s presence irritated him. Later, Zuo An, applying his knowledge of psychology, analyzed Shen Chenyang’s behavior, diagnosing him with a mild dependent personality disorder.
He theorized that due to the early death of his parents, Shen Chenyang lacked a sense of security and, upon finding a dependable person like Xiaoman, clung to her like a drowning person to a life raft. Zuo An explained that Xiaoman was Shen Chenyang’s "life-saving straw" and needed to provide him with appropriate psychological counseling. Zuo An then playfully expressed his jealousy about Xiaoman being Shen Chenyang’s "straw," acknowledging the difficult position Xiaoman was in but supporting her.
Xiaoman returned to talk with Shen Chenyang, who admitted his fear of death and reluctance to take risks due to an unfulfilled wish. When Xiaoman pressed him to reveal it, he playfully teased her before admitting that the wish involved both her and Zuo An, and he would share it directly with Zuo An later. Shen Chenyang also asked Xiaoman to help persuade his sister, Shen Xiyue, to marry.
He revealed that Shen Xiyue had vowed not to marry until he was cured, and if she married, half of his wish would be fulfilled. It was known that Shen Chenyang’s primary doctor, Xu Fei, was in love with Shen Xiyue. Understanding the situation, Xiaoman and Zuo An approached Xu Fei, encouraging him to propose to Shen Xiyue. Xiaoman was taken aback and hesitant, but Zuo An, accepting the challenge, agreed on her behalf, sealing the promise with a handshake. Xiaoman, initially annoyed that Zuo An had made such a decision for her, was reassured by Zuo An, who affectionately described her as his precious "silly girl."
Meanwhile, Zhan Yue and Yaola returned to China during their annual leave and learned about Shen Chenyang’s illness. They met up with friends, where a misunderstanding arose regarding Zuo An and Anning. Xiaoman quickly clarified that Anning had been the one pursuing Zuo An, and he had rejected her. During their reunion, Zhan Yue made a joke about winning Xiaoman over, which made Yaola jealous.
She stormed off, prompting Zhan Yue to chase after her and earnestly apologize, reminding her that he truly liked her. He then decided to go back to school with Yaola to pack up their things. Later, Anning sought out Xiaoman near her dormitory. Anning deliberately provoked Xiaoman, revealing that she and Zuo An were going to the United States as exchange students for at least a year.
She insinuated that this extended time together might lead them to rekindle their old relationship and pointedly reminded Xiaoman of the photo of her in Zuo An’s wallet. Xiaoman was furious. Back in her dormitory, she relayed the encounter to Lina and Liu Dan. Lina confirmed having seen the photo in Zuo An's wallet, connecting it to Xiaoman's earlier inquiries about boys keeping photos of other girls. Both Lina and Liu Dan tried to comfort Xiaoman, advising her to be proactive and secure her relationship with Zuo An to prevent Anning from gaining an advantage.
