A poignant flashback to a past happy birthday celebration for Tan Jing, surrounded by her parents as she made three wishes. In the present, Wang Yuling approaches Tan Jing outside her hospital room. Wang Yuling informs Tan Jing that Nie Yusheng visited that morning and left an envelope for her, asking Wang Yuling to deliver it.
She also reminds Tan Jing that tomorrow marks her father's death anniversary and encourages her to visit his grave, assuring her that Pingping will be well cared for. Wang Yuling gently advises Tan Jing to unburden herself to her father about her recent difficulties, rather than bottling everything up. That same evening, Nie Yusheng encounters Sun Zhijun while buying late-night food.
He learns that Sun Zhijun owes the barbecue stall owner for three months of meals and steps in to cover the debt. Nie Yusheng then directly asks Sun Zhijun to divorce Tan Jing, offering financial compensation. Sun Zhijun, however, demands five million yuan, provocatively questioning if Nie Yusheng intends to marry Tan Jing if he divorces her.
Sun Zhijun further claims that Nie Yusheng's father is responsible for his family's current difficult situation, stating that Nie Dongyuan "changed the rest of my life" and that their family's current state is "thanks to him." Sun Zhijun's remarks deeply trouble Nie Yusheng, leading to a sleepless night. The next morning, he goes to confront his father, Nie Dongyuan. Meanwhile, Nie Dongyuan, while looking for Pingping at the hospital, coincidentally meets Shu Qin, who is discharging her boss, Sheng Fangting.
When Shu Qin introduces them, she refers to Nie Dongyuan as her future father-in-law. Sheng Fangting remains silent but directs a complex gaze at Nie Dongyuan. Nie Dongyuan urges Sheng Fangting to ensure Shu Qin doesn't overwork and has time for romance. After Shu Qin drops Sheng Fangting off at his residence, she leaves without him making any effort to keep her there. Back in his room, Nie Dongyuan is questioned by Nie Yusheng about any secrets.
Nie Yusheng reveals Sun Zhijun's demand for five million, which Nie Dongyuan initially mistakes as coming from Tan Jing. Upon hearing Sun Zhijun's name, Nie Dongyuan expresses anger and disdain for Tan Jing for marrying such a "rascal." He insists he fully compensated Sun Zhijun for an industrial injury and refuses to pay more, warning Nie Yusheng to stay out of the matter.
Seeking clarity, Nie Yusheng speaks to Mr. Quan, his father's secretary, who explains that Sun Zhijun was the project manager at a construction project the company took over where an accident occurred. He was injured, and despite receiving compensation and not being held responsible, he has been relentlessly harassing them. Mr. Quan advises Nie Yusheng to distance himself from Sun Zhijun. Meanwhile, Tan Jing finally accumulates the 300,000 yuan for Pingping's surgery, expecting it to proceed.
However, Dr. Fang informs her that pre-operative tests revealed a lung infection, requiring a four to six-week course of antibiotics to prevent a more serious valve infection, thus delaying the surgery. After entrusting Pingping to Wang Yuling, Tan Jing travels to her hometown, Ning'an. On the bus, memories resurface of a past birthday with her parents when she was pregnant.
She recalls her father receiving a distressed phone call about an accident at a construction site and rushing out, never to return. Nie Yusheng later observes Pingping in the hospital bathroom teaching another child how to sprout soybeans in water, a method Pingping says his mother taught him to make wishes come true, specifically to recover quickly. This simple act deeply affects Nie Yusheng. Soon after, Sun Zhijun visits Pingping, bringing him a bamboo dragonfly and coloring with him.
Sun Zhijun advises Pingping not to believe any negative talk about his father from outsiders, claiming most of it is untrue. He tells Pingping to trust his father and to always listen to his mother and care for her as he grows up. Pingping, innocently, agrees, believing his father is a good person. Nie Yusheng attends the obstetrics and gynecology department to congratulate his colleague Dong on the birth of his son.
Dong proudly asks Nie Yusheng if his newborn resembles him. Nie Yusheng notes a resemblance, which prompts Dong to share how his own mother recognized the baby immediately, saying he looks exactly like Dong did as a child, from his nose and eyes to his chin and single-lidded eyes. These remarks about strong paternal resemblance trigger a sudden, unsettling realization in Nie Yusheng. A chilling thought, like a cold, sharp light, leaves him visibly pale and trembling.
He quickly invents an excuse about an urgent surgery and rushes out, ascending to the cardiac surgery ward. There, he finds Wang Yuling feeding Pingping. Nie Yusheng pauses at the doorway, his mind momentarily blank. He can't recall what Tan Jing's husband looks like, but he is now struck by Pingping's undeniable resemblance to himself. Nie Dongyuan receives confirmation from Dr. Fang that Pingping is indeed his biological grandson.
Overwhelmed with emotion, he expresses profound gratitude, believing fate has finally granted him a successor. Determined to compensate for lost time, Nie Dongyuan instructs Dr. Fang to prioritize Pingping’s recovery, declaring his intention to bring Pingping to live with him and provide him with the best life. Dr. Fang suggests discussing this with Tan Jing, describing her as a good person.
However, Nie Dongyuan vehemently states that he will never allow Tan Jing to "harm" Nie Yusheng, labeling her as cunning and manipulative. He emphasizes that as long as he lives, she will not be allowed to get close to his son. Meanwhile, Tan Jing visits her parents’ graves, finding solace in confiding her true feelings and struggles, including Sun Zhijun's ongoing issues and her hopes for Pingping's future. Later that night, Nie Yusheng confronts Tan Jing outside her apartment.
His demeanor confirms his suspicion that Pingping is his son. He asks why she kept it secret. Tan Jing responds by instructing him to ask his own father for the truth, and to also inquire about the real cause of her father's death. Nie Yusheng then goes to Nie Dongyuan's hospital room.
Despite seeing his father beaming with joy and recounting Pingping's charming resemblance to a young Nie Yusheng, Nie Yusheng, deeply affected by Tan Jing's words, probes his father about the actual circumstances of her father's demise.
