Where the Lost Ones Go Recap
Episode 1 Recap
Ten years later, Ye Zi attended the wedding of her best friend, Zhu Xuan, who married Yuan Lang, a senior of their university friend, Lin Sen. Witnessing the couple's happiness, Ye Zi reflected on love and commitment. She thought about how she used to envy couples whose love endured forever and how she often complained about fate being unfair, always depriving her of beautiful things.
However, she had come to realize that every relationship serves a purpose, perhaps to teach her that the meaning of love is more profound than its ultimate outcome. The story then flashed back to ten years prior, when Ye Zi and Zhu Xuan were new students at Art College. On their first day, Zhu Xuan declared her ambition to become the campus's "Miss. Know-all," vowing that nothing would escape her notice.
She enthusiastically shared a campus legend with Ye Zi: walking around with a flower could lead to a romantic encounter. Zhu Xuan even drew a flower for Ye Zi, who found the drawing ugly. While Zhu Xuan went off in search of gossip, Ye Zi decided to explore the campus alone. She was drawn to a painting studio where she saw Xiang Zeyi intensely working on an oil painting, bathed in sunlight.
His artistic focus captivated her, but their peaceful moment was interrupted when a furious girl burst in, confronting Xiang Zeyi about missing their movie date. Xiang Zeyi indifferently stated he had a girlfriend and was going on a date, telling her to stop wasting his time. Infuriated, the girl slapped him. As he stumbled backward, he spotted Ye Zi at the window.
Xiang Zeyi immediately declared, "She's here," then sprang out the window, grabbed Ye Zi's hand, and pulled her along as he fled. Ye Zi struggled to keep up, eventually stopping out of breath. As Xiang Zeyi leaned in, Ye Zi nervously retreated, accidentally stepping on the edge of a puddle and falling in, pulling Xiang Zeyi down with her.
Embarrassed and drenched, Ye Zi frantically collected her scattered belongings, inadvertently picking up Xiang Zeyi's expensive Apple MP3 player, and rushed back to her dorm, enduring curious stares from other students because she was soaked. Back in the dorm, Zhu Xuan barraged Ye Zi with questions about her soaked appearance, even wondering if she had been "attracted by anyone." Roommates Liu Xinran and Cheng Xi introduced themselves and intervened, suggesting Ye Zi clean up first.
As Zhu Xuan helped unpack Ye Zi's bag, she discovered an Apple MP3 player that didn't belong to Ye Zi and recognized the name "Xiang Zeyi" on the back. Zhu Xuan immediately grew excited, exclaiming that Xiang Zeyi was the most handsome man in Art College, admired by half the female student body, despite claiming to have a girlfriend. She proudly asserted the accuracy of her information, declaring herself the "Miss. Know-all."
Zhu Xuan tried to play music on the MP3 to learn his taste, but it was silent due to being wet. Just then, Ye Zi received a call from her friend Lin Sen, inviting her and Zhu Xuan out for hotpot. At the hotpot restaurant, Zhu Xuan continued to promote her gossip spirit. Lin Sen, who loved hotpot, spotted his senior, Yuan Lang, and invited him to join them.
Zhu Xuan was instantly smitten with Yuan Lang, who Lin Sen introduced as not only handsome but also an excellent student of Forensic Medicine. Attempting to impress him, Zhu Xuan told a "cold joke" about a man named Zhu Chuan, which fell flat, leaving her red-faced with embarrassment. Yuan Lang, meanwhile, ordered fried rice for himself. On their walk back to the dorm, Zhu Xuan lamented her embarrassing joke.
They discovered the school's back gate was locked, contrary to Zhu Xuan's earlier intel. Zhu Xuan, despite Ye Zi's reluctance due to her skirt, convinced her that climbing the wall was their only option. As Ye Zi managed to perch on top of the high wall, Xiang Zeyi swiftly scaled it and jumped down, leaving Ye Zi stunned. She recognized him as the person who had caused her fall earlier that day.
Xiang Zeyi offered to help her down, but Ye Zi didn't appreciate his offer, so he casually withdrew his hand and turned to leave. When Ye Zi attempted to jump herself, her hoodie snagged on the wall, leaving her dangling. Hearing her exclamation, Xiang Zeyi returned, unhooked her, and helped her safely to the ground before departing once more. The next day in the library, Ye Zi reached for an art book, which Xiang Zeyi snatched first.
He playfully addressed her as "Xu Beihong" and tried to get her to say her name, but Ye Zi, not wanting further entanglement, refused and began to leave. Xiang Zeyi then revealed he already knew her name, "Ye Zi," and formally introduced himself, "Nice to meet you, I'm Xiang Zeyi." He then returned the book to her.
As he walked away, he playfully took a heart-shaped sticker from Ye Zi's clothing and placed it on her cheek, an unexpected gesture that left an indelible impression on her. Ten years later, on her way home after Zhu Xuan and Yuan Lang's wedding, Ye Zi encountered heavy rain. Lin Sen, dressed formally and carrying a bouquet, arrived to pick her up. He apologized for missing the wedding, explaining he was held up by a surgery.
Ye Zi reminded him about her upcoming art exhibition next month and then posed a thoughtful question: if he had a second chance at life, what would he say to his younger self? She quickly dismissed the question. Lin Sen, holding a hidden engagement ring, seemed to want to say something important but ultimately remained silent. Ye Zi didn't notice his hesitation and went home.
Later that night, Ye Zi received a video call from Zhu Xuan, who was on her honeymoon. Zhu Xuan was surprised that Lin Sen had "gone back without any words" after dropping Ye Zi off. Zhu Xuan, furious about Lin Sen's hesitation, revealed that he had planned to propose to Ye Zi and she had even helped him pick out the ring and bouquet.
She called him "stupid" for missing such a perfect opportunity, believing Ye Zi would have immediately said yes. However, Yuan Lang suggested that perhaps Lin Sen did propose, but Ye Zi chose not to admit it. Meanwhile, under the dim streetlights outside Ye Zi's apartment, a man in a cap looked up – it was Xiang Zeyi.
Episode 2 Recap
Ye Zi's art exhibition was a lively affair, attended by her university friends. As Ye Zi greeted her friends, she paused before a particular painting. Her eyes fixated on a figure's back in the distance, strikingly similar to Xiang Zeyi. Her heart pounded intensely, leaving her frozen in place until her friends called her name, pulling her back from her trance. Though back in reality, her mind was flooded with memories of Xiang Zeyi from ten years ago.
During their university days, Xiang Zeyi learned painting from an eccentric artist he affectionately called "Old man." One day, as Xiang Zeyi painted on the wall of the Old man's warehouse, the Old man observed his work and astutely remarked, "Are you in love?" Xiang Zeyi, surprised, denied it, asking who could possibly "conquer" him, to which the Old man conceded his attractiveness.
The Old man then explained that he detected "restraint" in Xiang Zeyi's painting, a sign that he was trying to hide his true feelings, which meant he was in love. Xiang Zeyi dismissed it as "nonsense" and, frustrated, threw his brush, ruining a painting the Old man had been working on all morning.
The Old man, unfazed, simply told Xiang Zeyi to forget about his ruined painting, offering to work together on Xiang Zeyi's piece, guiding him to "add some here" to improve it. Elsewhere on campus, Zhu Xuan and her roommates were engrossed in the latest campus gossip: a handsome art student was pursuing a talented girl from the Chinese Painting Department. When asked who it was, Zhu Xuan excitedly revealed that it was Ye Zi.
Believing "things didn't go well between them," Zhu Xuan decided that as Ye Zi's sister, she and her friends should intervene and help them get together. Soon after, Ye Zi accidentally dropped her books on a path. Xiang Zeyi, passing by, stopped to help her, recognizing her from their earlier encounter. He directly asked, "Did you see my walkman?"
Ye Zi, knowing it was broken, became flustered and vaguely replied that she didn't have it with her and would return it next time. Xiang Zeyi, already aware of the situation, offered to give her his class information so she could return it to him. Ye Zi, however, insisted he provide his contact details instead. Xiang Zeyi then walked away, leaving her to fret about the broken walkman. Later, Ye Zi and Zhu Xuan were at a convenience store.
Zhu Xuan was enthralled by a poster of SHE, while Ye Zi was captivated by a Little Tigers poster. Ye Zi expressed how "great" it would be if the Little Tigers poster were hers. Zhu Xuan, seeing Ye Zi's interest, declared her intention to buy it for her, offering the store owner 300 yuan. However, the owner adamantly refused, stating all posters were "not for sale" and were "precious" as her son, a director, had obtained them through difficulties.
Zhu Xuan grew frustrated and even suggested the owner was "blackmailing." Ye Zi pulled Zhu Xuan away, questioning her sanity for wanting to spend so much on a poster. Zhu Xuan then admitted her earlier plan to use the poster as a "thanking gift" for a favor she needed from Ye Zi.
She relentlessly pleaded with Ye Zi, promising it would be a simple task this time and that she would "definitely" get the poster for Ye Zi if she helped. Ye Zi, unable to resist Zhu Xuan's persistence, reluctantly agreed. The favor, as Zhu Xuan then revealed, was for Ye Zi to "send the love letter to Yuan Lang." Stumped on how to deliver the letter, Ye Zi sought out Lin Sen.
Upon seeing the letter, Lin Sen initially assumed it was a love letter for Ye Zi, expressing annoyance that boys were already sending her letters so early in their enrollment, and even jokingly asked if it was from Xiang Zeyi. Ye Zi quickly clarified, "This is from Zhu Xuan." Realizing the situation, Lin Sen expressed that while people have the right to pursue love, he felt "unwell" about it, though he ultimately conceded to help.
When Lin Sen found Yuan Lang studying, he tried to pass him the letter. Yuan Lang initially refused, thinking it was from Lin Sen himself. But upon learning it was from Zhu Xuan, his demeanor changed instantly; he eagerly snatched the letter, forbidding Lin Sen from taking it back, and insisted on opening it. As Yuan Lang read Zhu Xuan's letter—which playfully mentioned a cold joke and the promise of more—Lin Sen teased him, saying, "You look in love."
Later, Zhu Xuan excitedly asked Ye Zi if the letter had been delivered, to which Ye Zi confirmed it was. Zhu Xuan, convinced that her "pure love" expressed in the letter would surely elicit a positive response from Yuan Lang, declared, "He will finally be mine." That night, Zhu Xuan, determined to get the Little Tigers poster for Ye Zi, convinced her to go to the convenience store again, this time to "steal" it.
Ye Zi was hesitant, feeling it was wrong to act "like a thief" and insisting they should obtain it "in a proper way," but Zhu Xuan dragged her along. As they crept towards the poster, Xiang Zeyi suddenly appeared, startling them. Zhu Xuan quickly tried to make an excuse, claiming they were just "doing exercise" after eating too much, and attempted to leave. However, Xiang Zeyi stopped Ye Zi.
Aware of their intentions, he blackmailed Ye Zi, telling her, "A good student wants to steal a poster. Will they be interested in this news?" He offered a deal: if Ye Zi promised him one thing, he wouldn't reveal her secret, and she wouldn't have to return his walkman. Ye Zi, cornered, asked what the "one thing" was, but Xiang Zeyi only said, "You will know tomorrow."
He reassured her he wouldn't let others know she tried to steal the poster. The next day, in class, while discussing the boring lecture by Professor Wang, Ye Zi and her friends spotted a notice board. They learned that Xiang Zeyi had won first place in the preliminary round of the National Cartoon Competition. Zhu Xuan connected this to his absence, realizing the preliminary round ended "yesterday."
Then, Ye Zi noticed a poster for a "Campus Singer Competition," with a walkman as the first prize. Zhu Xuan immediately urged Ye Zi to participate, wanting the walkman. Ye Zi repeatedly refused. Suddenly, Xiang Zeyi appeared behind Ye Zi and announced, "Begin practicing tomorrow, and I'll inform you the time." Zhu Xuan, confused, asked Ye Zi if she had agreed to participate with him.
Ye Zi, equally confused, confronted Xiang Zeyi, who reminded her of their agreement from "yesterday evening." He explained that if they won, she wouldn't have to return his walkman, and he would keep her secret, calling it a "win-win." Though hesitant, Ye Zi eventually agreed to meet him at 13:30 tomorrow on the Small Balcony to begin practicing.
Ten years later, Xiang Zeyi, appearing somber and having lost his youthful vigor, stood downstairs from Ye Zi's home, discarded his finished drink, and then visited the Old man at his old residence. The Old man, seeing him, immediately sensed that Xiang Zeyi was still unable to "let go" of something from his past. Xiang Zeyi, with a sigh, responded that "we always regret in our lives."
Episode 3 Recap
Zhu Xuan, distressed from an argument with her husband Yuan Lang, sought comfort at Ye Zi's place. She cried, complaining about Yuan Lang's unreasonableness despite her efforts for him. Ye Zi tried to console her, reminding her that their neighbors might call the police if she continued to cry so loudly. Suddenly, Zhu Xuan received a phone call, which she excitedly announced secured two tickets to an Academic Conference, something Yuan Lang enjoyed.
Ye Zi observed Zhu Xuan, noting her actions contradicted her words, and recalled a past sentiment from Liu Xinran: "The more you hate someone, the more you want to do things you hate with him." Back in their college days, Ye Zi's roommates were abuzz with the news that she would be participating in a singing contest with Xiang Zeyi.
They speculated about a potential relationship between them, but Ye Zi firmly denied it, stating she would rather be with Baozi than him. Despite her roommates' concerns about gossip given Xiang Zeyi's popularity, Ye Zi was resolute in her decision to compete. She tried to convince herself that singing was no big deal. The next day, Ye Zi arrived at the designated practice spot, where Xiang Zeyi chose the song "Sadly, it's not you."
Ye Zi struggled to sing, feeling too nervous. To help her relax, Xiang Zeyi led her to a large canvas and encouraged her to express herself freely with paints. As they painted together, creating a beautiful piece of art, they inadvertently drew closer. Xiang Zeyi began to lean in, but Ye Zi, startled, quickly pulled away and ran off. That night, Ye Zi tossed and turned, unable to sleep.
When she finally drifted off, she dreamt of Xiang Zeyi demanding his walkman back, waking her with a start. From her upper bunk, Zhu Xuan was calling out Yuan Lang's name in her sleep. Annoyed, Ye Zi playfully threw a cleaning cloth from the windowsill onto Zhu Xuan's face. The next morning, Zhu Xuan woke up convinced their room was haunted, recounting how the cloth for cleaning windows had mysteriously appeared on her face.
Ye Zi, rather than clarifying, urged Zhu Xuan to hurry to class. As they headed to class, they were intercepted by Xu Wenjie, a girl who admired Xiang Zeyi. Xu Wenjie purposefully bumped Ye Zi's bread, then accused her of dirtying her clothes. She haughtily offered Ye Zi fifty thousand yuan to stay away from Xiang Zeyi. Outraged, Zhu Xuan stepped forward, coolly stating that she could offer Xu Wenjie fifty thousand yuan to stay away from Ye Zi.
Xu Wenjie was momentarily speechless, and Zhu Xuan, seizing the opportunity, pulled Ye Zi away. Later, while browsing for art supplies, Zhu Xuan asked to see Ye Zi's painting for her upcoming assignment. Ye Zi confidently led her to the art studio to reveal her completed masterpiece, which she had spent half a month perfecting. To their horror, they discovered the painting was drenched in ink.
Realizing that only Xu Wenjie would do such a thing, Zhu Xuan immediately confronted her. Xu Wenjie brazenly admitted to ruining the painting, walking away with an air of defiance. Moments later, she passed Xiang Zeyi, who gave her a deep, disapproving look before cycling away silently. Despite the setback, Ye Zi resolved to redo her painting overnight. That night, Lin Sen found Ye Zi struggling in the studio.
He tried to help, even accidentally spilling ink again, but cheered her up and gave her tips on painting smoothly, staying with her throughout the night to help her finish. Earlier that day, Xiang Zeyi had approached Professor Wu.
He agreed to participate in the national Anime Contest, a competition Professor Wu was keen for him to enter, on one condition: Professor Wu had to postpone the submission deadline for the freshmen in the Chinese painting department by a few days. After some hesitation, Professor Wu agreed. Early the next morning, Xiang Zeyi rushed to the girls' hostel. He tried to get in, but Aunt Lee, the dorm matron, stopped him.
He fabricated a story about his sick "sister" living there, and Aunt Lee, touched by his apparent sincerity, allowed him to go upstairs. However, when Ye Zi opened her dorm room door and saw him, she immediately pushed him out and locked the door, much to Zhu Xuan's bewilderment.
When Aunt Lee later called out for someone to collect a parcel, Ye Zi still refused to open the door, even threatening to end her friendship with Zhu Xuan if she dared to. Eventually, Zhu Xuan and Liu Xinran went downstairs to retrieve the parcel. They found a dejected Xiang Zeyi sitting outside. They confronted him about his actions, to which he sincerely apologized and asked them to convince Ye Zi to see him so he could apologize properly.
They told him Ye Zi was stubborn and unlikely to listen to them but offered him her phone number in exchange for a big meal. Xiang Zeyi readily agreed. That evening, the roommates held one of their customary dorm meetings, discussing what their ideal partners looked like. Zhu Xuan declared Yuan Lang was her favorite, while the others joked about liking "Xixi and Haha" or Jay Chou.
Amidst the lighthearted chatter, Ye Zi received a text message from Xiang Zeyi: "If you are not angry anymore, come to me in the classroom tomorrow. We can continue to practice the song." Ye Zi looked at the message and smiled faintly. Later, Yuan Lang called Ye Zi, asking about Zhu Xuan. After hanging up, Ye Zi reflected that she still felt resentment towards Xiang Zeyi, yet she couldn't give up hating him.
Episode 4 Recap
Zhu Xuan and her roommates deliberated on how to bring Ye Zi and Xiang Zeyi together. They believed Xiang Zeyi would readily accept Ye Zi if she confessed her feelings, as they seemed to only need a push. Their plan centered around the upcoming Cultural Festival. They printed numerous flyers for a "Campus Gathering," also called a Cosplay Party, promoting it as a free and friendly event.
Zhu Xuan and Liu Xinran then made their way to the male dormitory to deliver a flyer to Xiang Zeyi. They found his roommate, Zhang Daniao, playing a game in a very messy room, though Xiang Zeyi's bed was surprisingly tidy. Zhang Daniao initially asked who they were. They instructed him to give Xiang Zeyi the flyer and tell him that Ye Zi would definitely be attending, so he must come too.
Zhang Daniao, fascinated by Liu Xinran, repeatedly asked for her name and if he could also come to the party. After they departed, he tossed the flyers onto each bed in the dorm. Meanwhile, Ye Zi arrived five minutes late to a singing practice session with Xiang Zeyi, explaining she "had a thing." Pleased to see her, Xiang Zeyi urged her to sit down so they could review the lyrics for their upcoming final match.
He sat behind her, drawing close and underlining words in her notebook. Feeling his proximity, Ye Zi grew uncomfortable and brought up "last time." Xiang Zeyi asked what she meant, to which she vaguely replied that "nothing happened last time," provocatively calling him "the campus hunk." He asked if she was upset, but Ye Zi, overwhelmed, suddenly declared she had to leave and quickly ran off. Interpreting her hasty departure as shyness, Xiang Zeyi simply smiled and did not follow.
The Costume Party commenced with a lively atmosphere. Ye Zi's friends, Xiang Zeyi's roommates, and Zhou Zixiu, the class president and an organizer, were all present. Zhang Daniao recognized Liu Xinran from their earlier encounter. Zhu Xuan challenged Ye Zi and Zhang Daniao to a dance-off on a dance machine, proposing a bet: the loser would have to confess their love to the first person who walked through the door.
Zhang Daniao, confident and slightly provoked, accepted the challenge, as did Ye Zi. As Ye Zi and Zhang Daniao battled it out on the dance machine, Zhu Xuan, Liu Xinran, and Zhou Zixiu stationed themselves at the entrance. Their plan was to restrict entry to everyone except Xiang Zeyi. Zhu Xuan then sent a frantic text message to Xiang Zeyi, falsely claiming that "Yezi is dying" to ensure he would rush to the party.
Xiang Zeyi had been with someone he called "Weirdo," expressing his usual disdain for such social activities and his firm intention not to attend. However, upon receiving Zhu Xuan's alarming text, he abruptly told "Weirdo" that he had an urgent matter to attend to and sped off on his bicycle towards the party. He arrived just as Zhang Daniao had won the dance-off against Ye Zi. As Xiang Zeyi entered, the crowd was excitedly chanting, "Confess, confess."
Seeing him, Zhu Xuan loudly urged him to hurry and check on Ye Zi. Ye Zi, caught between the bet and the enthusiastic crowd, declared, "Fine, since you’ve all been waiting to see the scene, I will give you what you want." She then turned to Xiang Zeyi and confessed, "Xiang Zeyi, getting to know you is the worst part of my life.
In my eyes, you are just an idiot who keeps bragging about how popular he is to little girls. I keep telling myself that I hate you. But every time I start to tell myself that, I can’t help to ask myself, why do I hate you? Because you always come out of nowhere and disappear to nowhere. Because you always mess up my life and I don’t know what to do with it.
I come up with many reasons but none of them is the real reason that I hate you. Maybe, I hate you, because I fell in love with you." Moved by Ye Zi's heartfelt confession, Xiang Zeyi began to extend his hand towards her. However, the excited whispers from the crowd soon turned to comments like, "It looks so real for a bet," and "I don’t think it’s real."
Zhang Daniao chastised someone for speaking, but another voice loudly confirmed, "Wasn’t that just a bet? It was just a bet!" Realizing he had been tricked, Xiang Zeyi felt a profound sense of humiliation and betrayal. He quickly asked, "Where is my bike?" and fled the party, leaving Ye Zi heartbroken and distraught. As he rode away, he pressed a hand to his chest, feeling his heart pound.
He mused to himself that "the only thing in the world that makes a man be a fool is love." Ten years later, Lin Sen joined Ye Zi's family for dinner. Ye Zi's mother was overly enthusiastic about Lin Sen, urging him to treat their home as his own since his parents were abroad.
She continuously praised his kindness and expressed her wish for him to marry Ye Zi, claiming he was like a half-son to her and that she and Ye Zi's father would be "relieved" if Ye Zi married him. Ye Zi was visibly annoyed, telling her mother she was "dragging it too far" and that her ears had developed "calluses" from the constant talk. She reiterated that she and Lin Sen were "just friends."
Her father eventually intervened, deflecting the conversation by asking Ye Zi to look at his writings, allowing Ye Zi to escape her mother's persistent matchmaking. Later, Zhu Xuan returned home to find Yuan Lang waiting for her. He was eager to reconcile, asking if she was still upset and swearing that he would be "hit dead by cars" if he ever stopped loving her. Zhu Xuan initially tried to push him away, reminding him of his past criticisms.
Yuan Lang, who had bought many ingredients to cook for her, suggested they eat out instead, as she was already home. Zhu Xuan, still hungry, agreed to go for Flaugnarde. As they drove, Zhu Xuan caught a glimpse of a figure on the street and instantly felt it was Xiang Zeyi, but when she looked again, he was gone. After the dinner, Ye Zi lay awake, contemplating her parents' persistent suggestions. She concluded that relationships are, in essence, like a gamble.
Episode 5 Recap
Lin Sen went to the kendo dojo to find Yuan Lang, seeking a way to calm himself. He confessed his worry about making a commitment to Ye Zi, fearing his feelings might not be what she truly wanted and could jeopardize their years of friendship. Yuan Lang, who had also experienced nervousness when proposing to Zhu Xuan, understood Lin Sen’s apprehension.
He advised Lin Sen that his biggest problem was a lack of inner peace, and only by finding it could he clearly see what he truly desired. Lin Sen agreed and began his kendo practice. Meanwhile, at the singing competition finals, Ye Zi and her friends, Zhu Xuan, Liu Xinran, and Cheng Xi, were backstage preparing. The girls worried if Xiang Zeyi would even show up. Despite her friends' suggestions to withdraw, Ye Zi affirmed her decision to perform.
Xiang Zeyi arrived just before their turn, and the staff handed them microphones before they went on stage. Xiang Zeyi began to sing, but when it was Ye Zi's turn, she froze, unable to utter a single note. The audience began to murmur, questioning why she wasn't singing. Overwhelmed, Ye Zi eventually dropped the microphone and hurried off stage.
Zhu Xuan, concerned, yelled for Xiang Zeyi to stop singing and go after her, but staff members intercepted him to sign in. Zhu Xuan followed Ye Zi, and on her way, she overheard Xu Wenjie mocking Ye Zi, saying she shouldn't sing if she couldn't handle it. Enraged by the insults, Zhu Xuan confronted Xu Wenjie, and the two began to fight. Despite being outnumbered, Zhu Xuan held her ground until Yuan Lang arrived and separated them.
Yuan Lang then led Zhu Xuan to a secluded spot to tend to her injured nose. Zhu Xuan took the opportunity to offer him a handmade red string bracelet. However, when Yuan Lang hesitated to accept it, Zhu Xuan misinterpreted his silence as disinterest and, hurt, threw the bracelet on the ground before running back to her dorm. Unknown to her, Yuan Lang secretly picked up the bracelet and kept it. Back in the dorm, Ye Zi was crying inconsolably.
Liu Xinran, Zhu Xuan, and Cheng Xi rallied around her, comforting her and pulling out a hidden stash of beer. They resolved to drink away their troubles. After consuming a significant amount, the four girls became thoroughly drunk and ventured out into the campus, yelling and venting their frustrations. They eventually settled on a patch of grassland, with Ye Zi and Zhu Xuan loudly proclaiming that "men are the worst creatures in the world."
Concerned for Ye Zi, Lin Sen found them and gently carried a now-unconscious Ye Zi away. As they walked, Xiang Zeyi appeared and demanded that Lin Sen put Ye Zi down, but Lin Sen ignored him, continuing to carry Ye Zi back to her dorm. A drunken Ye Zi mumbled Xiang Zeyi’s name, a sound that deeply pained Lin Sen, who then left Ye Zi in the care of her friends.
Later, in his art studio, Xiang Zeyi, still seething with jealousy, angrily kicked over a painting stand, ruining his own artwork. Just then, Ye Zi entered, carrying a newly bought iPod. She declared that they were now "even," implying the iPod settled her debt to him. Xiang Zeyi, however, refused it, stating that what she owed him could never be repaid.
Frustrated, Ye Zi threw the iPod out the window, stating she was tired of playing his games and wanted to leave. Xiang Zeyi then pulled her into a sudden kiss, stunning her. Shocked, Ye Zi pushed him away and ran off. As she fled, Xiang Zeyi called out, declaring that she was now his and couldn't shake him off. Years later, Ye Zi finished heating some food in the microwave.
Her friends Zhu Xuan, Liu Xinran, and Cheng Xi arrived with hot pot ingredients, announcing that their collaborative painting project had passed. The women celebrated with hot pot, reminiscing about their drunken college night. Ye Zi, who had blacked out that night, questioned Zhu Xuan about her peculiar behavior.
Zhu Xuan confessed that her strange actions were due to Yuan Lang and her failed attempt to give him the bracelet, proudly adding that now, Yuan Lang was "firmly in her grasp." Meanwhile, Yuan Lang visited Lin Sen, who was working late at the hospital, bringing him a meal. They too spoke of their college days and that memorable night of heavy drinking.
Lin Sen admitted that he had once believed that never getting drunk was a good thing, but now he wished he could have been foolish just once, hinting at the painful memory of having carried Ye Zi that night only for her to call Xiang Zeyi’s name. Yuan Lang, who had witnessed Lin Sen's emotional state that night, asked him about it.
Lin Sen vaguely replied that there are some words one holds in their heart for so long that they only find the courage to say once, regardless of whether the other person understands. Yuan Lang then confided that he had always kept the handmade bracelet Zhu Xuan had thrown away that night, admiring her unique spirit and how she was the first and only person to make his heart race. Both men shared a knowing smile, acknowledging the distance between their past and present.
Episode 6 Recap
Xiang Zeyi was browsing in a bookstore when he noticed Ye Zi's new book, "Fickle", topping the bestseller charts, signifying her success. Early one morning, Zhuzi woke up abruptly, realizing it was already nine o'clock. She was supposed to attend a meeting with Ye Zi and their publishing house editor, Mrs. Yu, but she had overslept. While frantically searching for her phone, Zhuzi received a call from her company, informing her that Ye Zi's book had won an award.
She quickly got ready and rushed to the office. Upon her arrival, Ye Zi and Mrs. Yu had also just met. After exchanging pleasantries, Ye Zi went with Mrs. Yu to discuss details of their cooperation, leaving Zhuzi to handle the reporters who had come to interview Ye Zi about her award. Watching Zhuzi answer reporters' questions about Ye Zi's new book, Ye Zi's thoughts drifted back to her college days.
One weekend in their university dorm, while everyone else was still asleep, Zhuzi woke them all up, declaring it was time for fortune-telling. Pulling out a constellation book, she earnestly began to read. First, she looked up Ye Zi's and Xiang Zeyi's horoscopes. Ye Zi asked, "Why mention him?" The horoscopes then stated that a Libra and an Aries were fundamentally different, on opposite sides of a ball with no intersection, destined to hate each other without deep understanding.
Zhuzi felt awkward but quickly moved on to her own and Yuan Lang's compatibility. The results were again unfavorable: a fickle Gemini and a considerate Virgo, despite sharing Mercury as a guardian star, had different styles, making a long-lasting relationship difficult. Zhuzi, upset by the book's predictions, accused it of being completely wrong and incorrectly assigning their star signs. Just then, Xirang received a phone call and stepped out. Xirang met Zhang Daniao outside the dorm.
He had brought fried chicken for breakfast. Though Xirang jokingly complained about eating fried chicken so early in the morning, she accepted it with a smile. Back in the dorm, her roommates happily dug into the food. Zhuzi discovered two movie tickets tucked into the fried chicken box, revealing Zhang Daniao's intention to ask Xirang out on a date. The girls playfully teased Xirang about her new admirer.
Later, the campus radio program began, with Song Li, a friend, sharing classic lines from the movie "6th Floor Rear Flat" and speaking about the wonderful aspects of youth. Meanwhile, in the library, Cheng Xi was studying, unaware of a male student admiring her from behind. Lin Sen, looking for Ye Zi, approached Zhuzi instead. He had found some picture albums from the school library that Ye Zi had been searching for and brought them to her.
Zhuzi, grateful for his thoughtfulness, then asked Lin Sen to help her get Yuan Lang's class schedule, to which he agreed. When Zhuzi returned to the dorm, Xirang also came back. All the roommates were now present. Xirang happily announced that she had officially started dating Zhang Daniao after their date. Zhang Daniao had invited them all to watch the national animation design competition finals in the Assembly Hall. Ye Zi was hesitant to go, knowing Xiang Zeyi was participating.
However, her roommates begged her to join them, and she eventually agreed to attend. At the competition venue, the Assembly Hall was packed. Ye Zi's dormmates found seats together, and soon after, Lin Sen and Yuan Lang arrived, having been invited by Zhuzi. Ye Zi watched Zhuzi, who clearly enjoyed the unfolding drama. Zhuzi noted the presence of Xu Wenjie and her group, observing that Xiang Zeyi had many supporters and joking about the "rivals in love."
The competition progressed swiftly, leading to the awards ceremony. The host announced that the winner of the Academy Award for Animated Short Film was Xiang Zeyi, from the oil painting department, for his work "Sunset." The judges praised his work for its national colors, distinct character personalities, smooth imagery, and unique theme. Xiang Zeyi went on stage to accept his award.
During his acceptance speech, he stated that he wasn't there just for the award but for a chance to speak to someone—a girl who had suddenly appeared in his life, a girl he had fallen in love with but who, for reasons unknown, seemed to hate him. He recalled telling her long ago that she could never get rid of him, and he wanted her to know that all his words, past, present, and future, came from his heart.
Then, to everyone's astonishment, he openly confessed his feelings for Ye Zi. Ye Zi was stunned and overwhelmed by his public declaration. Lin Sen, watching from the audience, had a grim expression. Flustered, Ye Zi rushed out of the hall. Xiang Zeyi immediately dropped the microphone and chased after her. He caught up to her, pulled her into his arms, and declared that she couldn't run away from him this time.
Ye Zi initially struggled but eventually relaxed in his embrace. Assuming she had accepted his feelings, Xiang Zeyi was surprised when Ye Zi proposed a challenge. She told him that if he could find the sticky note she had placed on the wall during the Cultural Festival within ten days, she would consider being his girlfriend. With that, she turned and ran off again. The story shifted back to the present day. Xiang Zeyi was having dinner with Zhang Daniao.
Zhang Daniao mentioned that Xirang and Zhuzi had seen Xiang Zeyi last week, then told Xiang Zeyi that he had lost the courage he possessed ten years ago. He then offered Xiang Zeyi a memory disk containing a video of his confession to Ye Zi, but Xiang Zeyi declined it, stating he didn't want to disturb Ye Zi's life and that she would forget him over time.
Just then, Zhang Daniao noticed Ye Zi and her friends at another table in the same restaurant. He attempted to get Xiang Zeyi to join them, but Xiang Zeyi firmly insisted on leaving. Zhang Daniao couldn't stop him and watched him go. After Xiang Zeyi left, Zhang Daniao greeted Ye Zi and her friends, who invited him to join them. Xirang confirmed that she and Zhang Daniao were still together after all these years. While at the table, Zhang Daniao discreetly slipped the memory disk into Ye Zi's bag, hoping she would find it later. He believed she needed to face the past.
Episode 7 Recap
Lin Sen, with the encouragement of Zhu Xuan, Liu Xinran, and Zhang Daniao who were hiding nearby, prepared to propose to Ye Zi. He confessed his feelings, telling her he had practiced his words many times and asked her to be his partner. Ye Zi, however, had a request.
She stated that if he could guess the wish she had written on a sticky note and placed on the Wishing Wall during their college Cultural Festival, she would marry him and accept the ring then. Unable to guess, Lin Sen quietly withdrew the ring, understanding her unspoken rejection. Ye Zi then told her hidden friends to come out. Liu Xinran and Zhang Daniao quickly made excuses about having other things to do and left.
Zhu Xuan tried to feign ignorance, admiring the flowers and pretending she coincidentally ran into them, but Ye Zi took her away, saving Lin Sen from further embarrassment. Later, Zhang Daniao visited Xiang Zeyi and informed him about Lin Sen's failed proposal, specifically mentioning Ye Zi's condition about the sticky note. Zhang Daniao suggested that Xiang Zeyi "should know what she meant," triggering Xiang Zeyi's memory of a similar past encounter.
Years ago, during their college days, Xiang Zeyi had confessed his feelings to Ye Zi. She challenged him to find a specific sticky note she had placed on the Wishing Wall during the Cultural Festival within ten days, promising to consider being his girlfriend if he succeeded. Xiang Zeyi diligently searched and eventually found the correct note.
He found Ye Zi after her class, and after Zhu Xuan left them alone, he dramatically revealed the sticky note taped to his chest. He explicitly asked her if she would be his girlfriend and confirm their relationship, to which Ye Zi happily agreed, embracing him. That evening, as Ye Zi was with her friends, they teased her about going on a date with Xiang Zeyi, implying she prioritized him.
Ye Zi promised to buy them drinks another time before leaving to meet Xiang Zeyi. They walked around campus, lost in conversation. Xiang Zeyi playfully told her that he wished he could shrink her down to a "Thumbelina" and keep her in his pocket so they could be together always. Ye Zi affectionately called him a "floppy man." They were reluctant to part ways even when they reached her dorm.
Meanwhile, Zhu Xuan visited Yuan Lang, who had just finished a human anatomy experiment with his classmates. The sight of organs had made them all nauseous. When Zhu Xuan arrived with a container of noodles for Yuan Lang, his classmates, still feeling queasy, found the noodles disgusting and quickly dispersed. Yuan Lang tried to eat them but couldn't stomach it and also hurried off. Another day, Zhang Daniao had organized an outing, but everyone else had canceled.
Zhu Xuan informed Yuan Lang that Zhang Daniao had diarrhea and Liu Xinran was looking after him, Ye Zi and Xiang Zeyi were on a date, and Cheng Xi was at the library. Only she and Yuan Lang were left. Taking advantage of the unexpected privacy, Zhu Xuan bravely confessed her feelings to Yuan Lang, telling him she liked him and asking if he wanted her to be his girlfriend.
Instead of a verbal answer, Yuan Lang kissed her, leaving Zhu Xuan elated. As Ye Zi's birthday approached, her friends discussed celebration plans. Xiang Zeyi, however, arrived and announced that he and Ye Zi already had plans to spend the day alone. Ye Zi confirmed she had promised him. Despite Zhu Xuan's initial annoyance, she relented, allowing Ye Zi to go with Xiang Zeyi and asking him to return her books.
On Ye Zi's birthday, Xiang Zeyi rented a convertible car for their outing. When it started raining unexpectedly, they had to pull over and shelter in a tunnel. As they sat together, Xiang Zeyi helped Ye Zi tie her hair, remarking that she looked like their future daughter. They exchanged playful banter, and then the conversation turned more serious. Ye Zi shared details about her parents' loving but sometimes quarrelsome relationship, and how her romantic father always surprised her mother.
When she asked about his family, Xiang Zeyi revealed that his mother had moved abroad when he was a child, and his father was always busy with work. He had refused their offer to send him abroad, choosing independence instead, and now admitted he missed them. To lift the mood, Xiang Zeyi surprised Ye Zi with a birthday cake, promising to celebrate with her every year and declaring he would guard his "little princess."
He then jokingly asked what she would do if he disappeared, and when she asked him back, he teased her by saying he would try to forget her through "smoking, drinking and dating lots of girls." Ten years later, Ye Zi discovered a USB drive in her bag. She plugged it into her computer and watched a video of Xiang Zeyi's public confession to her. The emotional memory brought tears to her eyes.
The next day, Ye Zi confronted Zhang Daniao, suspecting he had put the USB drive in her bag to make her inquire about it. Zhang Daniao didn't directly admit to it but gave her Xiang Zeyi's current phone number, telling her to "do what you like." As Ye Zi debated whether to call, her mother called her in distress, informing her that her father had suffered a sudden heart attack and was in the hospital.
Ye Zi rushed there to find her mother anxiously waiting outside the operating room. Her mother explained that her father had collapsed unexpectedly. Lin Sen, who was the chief surgeon, came out of the operating room and assured them that her father was alright but needed rest. While waiting, Ye Zi's mother expressed her heartfelt wish for Ye Zi to find a good husband who would love her and her family, emphasizing the suddenness of life's events.
Later, Ye Zi picked up her phone and dialed Xiang Zeyi's number but hung up without speaking, though Xiang Zeyi seemed to sense it might have been her call. Soon after, Xiang Zeyi received a call from Zhang Daniao, who informed him that Ye Zi's father had a sudden heart attack and was hospitalized. When Xiang Zeyi tried to ask for more details, Zhang Daniao simply told him to ask Ye Zi directly.
Episode 8 Recap
Zhuxuan adamantly insisted she had seen Xiang Zeyi, pressing Liu Xinran to confirm whether Zhang Daniao was absolutely certain he had not returned. Liu Xinran reiterated that Zhang Daniao was indeed sure Xiang Zeyi was not back. Zhuxuan scoffed, reminding Liu Xinran that Zhang Daniao had once "bought her off with fried chicken" to get her into college. Liu Xinran promptly retorted, questioning Zhuxuan's own past struggles with Yuan Lang, reminding her how much he used to infuriate her.
This exchange made Zhuxuan recall a specific incident from ten years prior. Ten years ago, Zhuxuan, Liu Xinran, and Cheng Xi were at a cafe. Zhuxuan was visibly upset, prompting her friends to inquire about the cause. Zhuxuan revealed it was about Yuan Lang, lamenting his lack of responsiveness to her passionate gestures and his excessively "chill" demeanor, which made her question the nature of their relationship.
She recounted that when she asked him where they should spend the weekend, expecting him to inquire about her preference, Yuan Lang instead launched into a detailed, rational analysis. He explained that weekends typically required rest, and going out would involve spending 30% of their time stuck in city traffic and another 30% waiting in lines at public places like movie theaters.
He concluded that staying home would be their best option, or perhaps a relaxing walk outside of town, to preserve their precious remaining time. Zhuxuan expressed her intense frustration with his "legal medical major" rationality, arguing that love should be irrational, blind, and crazy. Liu Xinran and Cheng Xi pointed out that while Zhuxuan was exploding with anger, Yuan Lang likely had no idea why she was upset and might even consider her unreasonable.
Meanwhile, Ye Zi was busy preparing for an upcoming three-day college activity in Nanjing. Her mother had asked Lin Sen to deliver some items to her, which he did. After Ye Zi gratefully accepted the package, Lin Sen relayed a message from Yuan Lang, who was confused about what he had done to upset Zhuxuan and hoped Ye Zi could help arrange a talk.
Ye Zi replied that while she could speak to Zhuxuan, it was ultimately a matter between Yuan Lang and Zhuxuan, and it was best for others not to interfere. Lin Sen did not press the matter. Their conversation was secretly captured by Xu Wenjie on her phone, who then formed a plan. As Ye Zi was packing for her trip, Xiang Zeyi called to ask her out.
She apologized for forgetting to mention that she was going to Nanjing for a few days for a college activity. Xiang Zeyi simply told her to travel safe, though he later muttered to himself, wondering why she hadn't told him. Shortly after, Xu Wenjie approached Xiang Zeyi, questioning why he was under the boys' dormitory at night. She then showed him photos of Ye Zi and Lin Sen, implying something suspicious.
Xiang Zeyi dismissed her attempts, stating that Lin Sen and Ye Zi had been good friends forever and it was normal for them to talk. He affirmed his belief in Ye Zi and his own judgment, telling Xu Wenjie to stop doing such embarrassing things. With Ye Zi away, Xiang Zeyi stayed in his dorm, listless, looking "like a little aggrieved bride" according to Zhang Daniao. Meanwhile, Zhuxuan, still upset about Yuan Lang, became increasingly erratic.
She woke her roommates, Liu Xinran and Cheng Xi, early in the morning, badgering them to go running and exercise to form good habits. Later, she wrapped herself in a blanket and sang loudly in the dormitory, completely disrupting their peace.
One night, she even made a prank call to a "night-time telephone" show, dramatically claiming to be a sophomore who had unknowingly fallen in love with a married man twenty years her senior, much to the exasperation of Liu Xinran and Cheng Xi who were desperate for sleep.
When Ye Zi finally returned, Liu Xinran and Cheng Xi greeted her like a savior, tearfully recounting Zhuxuan's chaotic behavior and begging Ye Zi to intervene, as Zhuxuan was "almost crazy" and "making them crazy too," nearly getting them punished. Seeing Zhuxuan's state, Ye Zi met with Lin Sen, hoping he could arrange a talk between Yuan Lang and Zhuxuan, as the situation couldn't continue.
Lin Sen agreed, noting Yuan Lang also seemed "lost his mind lately," and promised to ask him out. This meeting was witnessed by Xiang Zeyi, who, seeing Ye Zi had returned without informing him but met Lin Sen first, became enraged, his anger fueled by Xu Wenjie's earlier insinuations. He confronted Ye Zi, demanding she "Come with me" and asking why she hadn't told him she was back.
When Lin Sen tried to mediate, Xiang Zeyi told him to "Shut up" and accused Ye Zi of betraying his trust by meeting Lin Sen before him. Ye Zi retorted that he looked "like a crazy person" and refused to explain, especially after he mentioned believing Xu Wenjie's words. Disappointed, Ye Zi tried to pull Lin Sen away, but Xiang Zeyi grabbed her, further escalating the argument.
Lin Sen intervened, questioning Xiang Zeyi's treatment of Ye Zi, which led to a physical fight between the two men, with Ye Zi desperately trying to separate them. Eventually, the fight ceased, and Lin Sen left. Ye Zi stayed to tend to Xiang Zeyi's injuries, buying band-aids to dress his wounds. As she carefully patched him up, Ye Zi teased him, saying he didn't look handsome when he fought, and confirmed Lin Sen looked worse.
Xiang Zeyi admitted his fault, confessing that while he didn't truly believe Xu Wenjie, he became "weird and went crazy" when he saw Ye Zi looking so happy talking to Lin Sen. Ye Zi acknowledged her own failure to explain calmly, understanding his upset came from caring, but playfully insisted that his doubts still needed "to be punished." They reconciled with playful banter, teasing each other about his dirtiness and her "mercy," their argument ending in renewed affection.
Ye Zi's father had been moved from surgery to a ward, with Ye Zi keeping vigil by his side. Xiang Zeyi visited, leaving fruits without letting Ye Zi see him, and then slipped away. Later, after Lin Sen had also been persuaded by Ye Zi to go home and rest, Ye Zi's father awakened.
As Ye Zi went to call the doctor, she overheard two nurses outside the ward discussing a very handsome man who had just visited, speculating if he looked better than Doctor Lin. Realizing it might have been Xiang Zeyi, Ye Zi quickly went out to search for him. Finally, she spotted him under a dim streetlight, but Xiang Zeyi, unwilling to face her, pulled down his hat and walked away.
Ye Zi ran after him, searching frantically, but could not find him. Close to breaking down, she stood in the darkness and cried out, demanding to know why he had left her, why he had disappeared without telling anyone. Though she could not see him, Xiang Zeyi remained hidden in the darkness, leaning against a wall as if utterly spent, unable to bring himself to come out. Despite his silent plea for her to "Leave," Ye Zi defiantly resolved that she would not give up on him and would make him keep his promises.
Episode 9 Recap
Lin Sen arrived on the hospital rooftop to find Xiang Zeyi waiting. Xiang Zeyi presented him with a wish post-it he had found when he confessed his feelings to Ye Zi, suggesting Lin Sen take it so Ye Zi would accept his marriage proposal. Lin Sen did not accept it. When Lin Sen asked if Ye Zi knew about this, Xiang Zeyi claimed it was what Ye Zi had asked him to find.
Lin Sen then told Xiang Zeyi, "You are braver than me," before angrily punching him and leaving. Xiang Zeyi simply wiped the blood from his mouth and walked away in silence. Back at his place, Xiang Zeyi cleaned the blood from his lip. As he clicked his table lamp on and off, his mind drifted back to his college days, remembering a night ten years ago.
In a flashback to his college years, Xiang Zeyi secretly painted in the art room late at night. Zhang Daniao discovered him, humorously questioning what he was doing and if he was trying to disturb everyone. Xiang Zeyi playfully accused Zhang Daniao of following him. Zhang Daniao teased him, asking if he, a known Casanova, had turned into a Romeo.
Xiang Zeyi asked Zhang Daniao to keep his secret, promising in return that his "girl" (Ye Zi) would speak well of Zhang Daniao. Zhang Daniao agreed to the deal but insisted on seeing the painting. Xiang Zeyi, still working on it, revealed he was creating a special piece that depicted his and Ye Zi's shared memories, intending to give it to Ye Zi. Xiang Zeyi then presented the finished painting to Ye Zi.
Upon seeing it, she exclaimed in surprise, "For me?" The artwork depicted every memory they had shared together, deeply moving Ye Zi. She confessed, "I didn’t know you’d do things like this." Xiang Zeyi, teasing, said there were many things she didn't know about him but he would allow her time to discover them. He asked if she found it romantic, to which she replied he was "funny."
Ye Zi treasured it as his first gift, declaring it hers and refusing to give it back even when Xiang Zeyi playfully threatened to take it. She then hugged him tightly. During their conversation, Xiang Zeyi shared his lifelong passion for drawing and his dream of creating art known worldwide. Ye Zi encouraged him to pursue his dream and remain true to himself. Later, while Xiang Zeyi was drawing in the art room, a visibly upset Zhang Daniao stormed in.
Recognizing the signs, Xiang Zeyi immediately asked if he had fought with Liu Xinran. Zhang Daniao confirmed it, frustrated that Liu Xinran constantly thought about the future and wanted "unreal results" for everything. He questioned, "What is love? I don’t get it. Aren’t two people being together to have fun?" He felt that in their age, not being in crazy love was a waste of time, but he couldn't comprehend women's focus on future and work.
Xiang Zeyi, understanding that as university students, they couldn't promise much, countered, suggesting that Liu Xinran might simply be afraid of losing him, and that what "a woman wants from a man is a promise." Zhang Daniao then challenged Xiang Zeyi about his own promise to Ye Zi, to which Xiang Zeyi confidently replied, "Soon." At a bar they frequented, Xiang Zeyi arrived late, causing Ye Zi to be visibly annoyed.
A bar staff member joked about him being "ordered" by Ye Zi, and Ye Zi, still displeased, playfully instructed the staff to make his drink taste bad. To lighten her mood, Xiang Zeyi presented her with a small drawing of her pouting, finally cheering her up. When he saw her smile, he took out his walkman and listened to music with her.
He promised to draw one for her every day, intending for the collected box of drawings to be his proposal gift when he graduated. Ye Zi teased him about who would marry him, to which he mused about what his future bride would look like. He then shared a "trick" that made her laugh. After she acknowledged his luck, he offered to show her "one more." Ten years later, Xiang Zeyi returned to the same bar.
The bar owner immediately recognized him and greeted him warmly. When asked about his girlfriend, Xiang Zeyi quietly replied that they had broken up. He then looked around the familiar surroundings, lost in memories of his past moments with Ye Zi. Zhang Daniao finally approached Liu Xinran, who initially avoided him, stating there would be no "result" between them. Zhang Daniao argued passionately against the need for immediate results, asking, "Do we know about tomorrow when we are living today?"
He questioned her about her feelings, and she initially denied still liking him. As he turned to leave, Liu Xinran called him back, apologized, and listened as he confessed, "I can’t give you the result you want yet, but I also can’t leave you. I can only promise you that I won’t let you get hurt as long as I’m with you." He then presented her with a handmade, slightly imperfect ring, hoping she would like it.
Liu Xinran accepted it and made him promise never to lie to her again, finally reconciling. At the library, the class monitor approached Cheng Xi, asking if she was free to go to the movies with him, as he had received two tickets. Cheng Xi politely but firmly declined, stating she wasn't interested. She advised him to "stop wasting time" on her and to ask someone else instead, as she already knew he was pursuing her but had not agreed.
Later, Zhu Xuan joked with Ye Zi about the joys of having someone say goodnight every day, lamenting her own situation with Yuan Lang. Ye Zi wondered if she would ever get used to not having Xiang Zeyi say goodnight, but Zhu Xuan reassured her that Xiang Zeyi was romantic enough to say goodnight even when he was old, encouraging Ye Zi to enjoy life. Xiang Zeyi led Ye Zi to the bar with her eyes closed.
This was the same bar where he had first brought her and sang a heartfelt song, deeply moving her. When she opened her eyes, she saw the painting he had hung there earlier. He asked if she liked it, and she confirmed she did, then asked why he chose to hang it in the bar. Xiang Zeyi explained that "it’s not simply a painting. It’s more like a promise to me.
As long as it hangs here, I’ll always be here for you." While Ye Zi and her dorm mates were playing tennis, Ye Zi sat out due to a cold. Liu Xinran noticed she didn't look well and asked if she had a fever, suggesting she take medicine. Liu Xinran then mentioned that Zhang Daniao had told her Xiang Zeyi also had a cold.
Zhu Xuan immediately seized the opportunity to tease Ye Zi, asking, "Yezi, what naughty thing did you do with Xiang Zeyi?" She continued to joke about "Eve and Adam" being meant to be together, playfully implying something inappropriate.
Liu Xinran tried to inquire more about Xiang Zeyi's condition, but Zhu Xuan cut her off, asserting that even if Xiang Zeyi was sick, he was a man and stronger than Ye Zi, jokingly telling Ye Zi to break up with him if he was weaker. Alone in the hospital hallway, Lin Sen held the wish post-it given to him by Xiang Zeyi, then deliberately crumpled it in his hand.
That night, while Xiang Zeyi was drawing at home, his doorbell rang. It was Mr. Shao, a company boss who had once highly regarded his talent during his college days. Mr. Shao greeted him warmly, joking about his living space feeling like a workspace and calling it a "good place to stand back on your feet." He revealed that his invitation for Xiang Zeyi to join his company after graduation was "still valid."
Xiang Zeyi expressed his current struggles, admitting, "I can’t even draw well an oil painting now," and worried he might never regain his skill after not touching art for years. Mr. Shao encouraged him, reminding him of his past "brave and passionate" self, with a "personal style" special enough to declare love publicly.
He urged Xiang Zeyi not to give up on his decision to start over, but to "go to the old places, meet your muses, find your heart" to rekindle his inspiration. He reiterated that the opportunity still stood, as he had kept his position after all these years. However, Xiang Zeyi still refused the offer. Zhu Xuan arranged to meet Lin Sen, immediately pressing him about the situation with Ye Zi.
She asked if Xiang Zeyi was back, noting that Ye Zi had suddenly mentioned a sticker on the day Lin Sen proposed, implying it was a sign of Xiang Zeyi's return. Lin Sen, however, insisted his only concern was protecting Ye Zi from further hurt, regardless of Xiang Zeyi's presence. Noticing Zhu Xuan seemed unwell, he asked about her condition, but she dismissed it as mere "stomach ache" from worrying about him and Ye Zi.
Lin Sen urged her to get checked if she felt unwell, reminding her that Yuan Lang would worry. Zhu Xuan, however, told him to focus on himself and Ye Zi, insisting she was fine, before Lin Sen concluded their conversation, stating he had things to do. Alone, Xiang Zeyi reflected on his past actions, lamenting, "I thought I love you the most. But I made you scared for so long. I'm sorry."
Episode 10 Recap
Ye Zi’s father was finally discharged from the hospital, bringing a much-needed lift to Ye Zi’s spirits. Her mother cautioned her to be careful, as Ye Zi had spent long days commuting between home and the hospital. Ye Zi promised to listen, acknowledging her mother’s care. Her father, feeling well, told Ye Zi that with her mother by his side, she should focus on her own work. He noted that as a renowned comics artist, she should always be busy.
Ye Zi explained that a company had purchased the IP for one of her comics and planned to turn it into an animation. However, after paying the deposit, they had rescheduled numerous times, leaving her with unexpected free time. Her father wondered if she didn't want that. The next morning, as Yuan Lang left for work, he reminded Zhu Xuan about breakfast. However, when Ye Zi received an urgent call from Zhu Xuan, she rushed over.
Zhu Xuan, appearing distressed, announced she was "probably pregnant." Ye Zi was surprised but deemed it good news, asking if Yuan Lang knew. Zhu Xuan said no and stopped Ye Zi from calling him, insisting she would tell him herself. Zhu Xuan expressed her worries, feeling it wasn't the "perfect time" for a baby. When Ye Zi asked if it was Yuan Lang's child, Zhu Xuan affirmed it.
Ye Zi was confused by Zhu Xuan's uncertainty, but Zhu Xuan explained she had missed her period for two months and had no appetite, even for her favorite foods, making her "sure" she was pregnant. Ye Zi pointed out that without a hospital visit or a test, she couldn't be certain. Zhu Xuan confessed she was too scared to test. Ye Zi reasoned that since she was married, having children was normal.
Finally, Liu Xinran offered to buy a pregnancy test stick, and Zhu Xuan, still hesitant, took it to the bathroom. Watching Zhu Xuan, Ye Zi recalled her own pregnancy scare during college. During that time, she was unusually quiet and avoided Xiang Zeyi, struggling to confide in him. Her roommates noticed her odd behavior, with Zhu Xuan questioning if Ye Zi had been "late" for her period and hinting at intimacy with Xiang Zeyi, which Ye Zi vehemently denied.
Cheng Xi also mentioned seeing Ye Zi searching for something on her computer, though she couldn’t make out the details. Zhu Xuan relayed these concerns to Xiang Zeyi, who was already frustrated by Ye Zi’s recent distance. He sought advice from an "Old Man," who, amidst his drinking, philosophized about how women can make men feel like "terrorists" by withholding answers. The Old Man advised Xiang Zeyi to reflect on their shared experiences to find the solution.
Still confused, Xiang Zeyi continued to ponder. One morning, Zhu Xuan, the last to wake in the dorm, found Ye Zi's computer on and discovered pregnancy-related searches. Immediately, she called Xiang Zeyi, who was still dwelling on the Old Man's words and began to suspect Ye Zi might indeed be pregnant. When he asked Zhu Xuan to find Ye Zi for him, she urged him to go himself, insisting he take action. Xiang Zeyi found Ye Zi in her classroom.
She tried to ignore him and leave, but he held her. He then gently lifted her into his arms and carried her to the art room. There, he placed her on a chair, apologized for everything, and presented a small box. Inside were medicine and a pair of tiny baby shoes. He earnestly said that if she was pregnant, they would have the baby, and he would learn to be a good father.
He confessed he imagined their baby as a mermaid, like the one she loved, and wanted to name their child Merkid. He made her promise to share everything with him, reassuring her that he would always be there. However, Ye Zi simply smiled. She confessed she wasn't pregnant; her recent nausea was merely due to a stomachache. Xiang Zeyi was visibly disappointed, having already envisioned their family.
As they buried the small box under a tree, Xiang Zeyi lingered, whispering "Merkid, my kid," clearly reluctant to let go of the idea. Ye Zi gently reminded him, "Do you remember the first time we met?" and affectionately pulled him away. Back in the present, Zhu Xuan emerged from the bathroom. The pregnancy test showed only one line, confirming she wasn't pregnant. A collective sigh of relief swept through her friends.
Liu Xinran and Cheng Xi soon left, while Ye Zi stayed behind to comfort a visibly sad Zhu Xuan. Zhu Xuan admitted that while she was relieved about not being pregnant due to Yuan Lang's career focus and her own concerns about body shape and self-care, a part of her had truly wanted the baby. She concluded that "love is everything," and they compromise for each other in life.
Ye Zi then joined Zhu Xuan in tidying the room, playfully calling each other "idiot." Meanwhile, Xiang Zeyi was eating instant noodles when Mr. Shao arrived. Mr. Shao, lamenting Xiang Zeyi's solitary eating habits, offered him a major project: directing an animated series based on a popular "Ancient style" comic. Xiang Zeyi was initially reluctant, but Mr. Shao insisted he just "have a look." Upon opening the portfolio, Xiang Zeyi saw the artist's name and realized the comic was by Ye Zi. He slowly closed the album, falling into a deep silence.
Episode 11 Recap
Xiang Zeyi went to a bar he frequented during college. The proprietress recognized him and made his usual order of "Forever," a special drink he often shared with Ye Zi, serving two glasses. She remarked that some things don't change easily and that eternity exists. Xiang Zeyi offered to pay for the drinks. His thoughts then drifted back to his college days.
During his college days, Xiang Zeyi studied painting under an eccentric old professor who often noted the "unpleasant smell of love" emanating from Xiang Zeyi. The professor mused that love forces people to change, making them suspect and constrain each other, a form of torture they can't escape, preferring to be free himself. Xiang Zeyi shrugged off the professor's comments about the "unpleasant smell of love," asserting it didn't matter to him.
Meanwhile, Liu Xinran asked Zhang Daniao out to reconcile. Zhang Daniao initially thought she was upset about his "ten crimes," swearing he wouldn't commit them again. Liu Xinran, however, playfully asked why he would assume she'd invite him to a romantic spot if something wasn't wrong. They then agreed not to quarrel anymore. Zhang Daniao argued that small quarrels could actually be useful for their love.
Liu Xinran then playfully "awarded" him by pretending to hit him, and they engaged in a lighthearted chase, promising to stay together forever. Later, Xiang Zeyi and Ye Zi were on a date at a bar. Ye Zi surprised Xiang Zeyi with a wallet as a gift, and he was delighted to reveal he had also bought her a wallet. He encouraged her to open it, and she found a thick stack of hundred-yuan bills inside.
Ye Zi tried to refuse the money, but Xiang Zeyi insisted she keep it, explaining he earned it from a competition. He stated, "I earn money and you spend it." Ye Zi then agreed to keep it, promising to pay for their meals going forward, playfully calling it "keeping him as a lover."
Xiang Zeyi looked at her picture in his new wallet, telling her he kept it there so people would know he had a girlfriend and wouldn't bother him. Ye Zi teased him about how popular he was. He then sweetly told her that once she graduated and he earned a million yuan a year, they would get married. Ye Zi reacted with happy surprise at his proposal.
After a game of basketball with his roommates and Zhang Daniao, Xiang Zeyi offered to treat them to drinks. Lin Sen snatched Xiang Zeyi's wallet, playfully asking to see the picture of his girlfriend. Xiang Zeyi, protective, warned them not to bully Ye Zi, declaring her his girlfriend and demanding their respect. His roommates then started calling Ye Zi "Mrs. Xiang." As they left the court, they saw Ye Zi and her roommates walking by.
Xiang Zeyi's friends loudly shouted "Mrs. Xiang" at Ye Zi, making her blush and pull Xiang Zeyi away, running off in embarrassment. Nearby, other female students were seen comforting a girl named Wen, telling her not to be angry and that Ye Zi didn't deserve Xiang Zeyi, promising Wen that she would get Xiang Zeyi back. Yuan Lang, seeking Zhu Xuan's forgiveness, wrote a gushy letter.
He read it aloud to Lin Sen for feedback, starting with a quote attributed to Xu Zhimo about selfless devotion and wishing to meet in the most beautiful years. Lin Sen found it "too disgusting" but listened as Yuan Lang continued, expressing gratitude for meeting her and hoping to meet her in his dreams. Lin Sen suggested making the ending more implicit, changing "Hope I could meet you tomorrow" to "Let's meet in our dream."
Yuan Lang then struggled with what punctuation or emoji to add after his name, settling on a pound sign. He later found Zhu Xuan and shyly handed her the letter, telling her to read it after he left. Zhu Xuan was very surprised but thrilled by the romantic gesture. In class, while the professor lectured on colors and composition, using examples like "three-primary colors" and "Swan Lake," Zhu Xuan discreetly pulled out Yuan Lang's letter to re-read.
Liu Xinran tried to snatch it, and their playful scuffle drew the professor's attention. The professor then called on Zhu Xuan to explain the "composition of a picture." Zhu Xuan, flustered, struggled to answer, much to Liu Xinran's amusement. Later, the four friends—Xiang Zeyi, Ye Zi, Liu Xinran, and Zhang Daniao—gathered for hotpot. Zhu Xuan playfully recited a romantic line from Yuan Lang's letter, which spurred Xiang Zeyi to reiterate his promise of eternal love to Ye Zi.
Zhang Daniao also tried to make a similar declaration to Liu Xinran but was repeatedly interrupted by her. Annoyed, Liu Xinran eventually dragged Zhang Daniao out of the restaurant, leaving Ye Zi and Xiang Zeyi to pay the bill and awkwardly share a "sweet" moment alone. Outside the hotpot restaurant, Zhang Daniao complained about being dragged away while still hungry. Liu Xinran pointed out the beautiful view, then Zhang Daniao confessed he actually wanted to be alone with her.
He spoke romantically about holding her hand forever, walking together every day, and even speculated about their future children. Liu Xinran then candidly told him that while she had romantic thoughts about the future, she also thought about the realities of life and wanted a planned future. Zhang Daniao, touched that she shared her thoughts, promised to be with her forever, no matter what, and declared that his life would be perfect with her in it.
Ye Zi met with Mr. Shao at his company to discuss the animation adaptation of her comic book. Mr. Shao recognized her from her student days and praised her early works for their purity, explaining that he chose her comic because he believed she was a person who "sticks to her original will."
He informed her that an excellent manager named Xiang Hui, who also "sticks to his original will," would be in charge of the adaptation, suggesting they communicate their ideas. Ye Zi remained silent, pondering something. That evening, Ye Zi, Zhu Xuan, Cheng Xi, and Zhang Daniao gathered at a bar for Liu Xinran's birthday. Despite the celebratory atmosphere, Liu Xinran was visibly unhappy, and Zhang Daniao was unusually quiet.
Zhu Xuan gave a long, elaborate toast, and Liu Xinran simply said "thank you," which Zhu Xuan noted as odd, jokingly asking if she liked being treated badly. When Liu Xinran announced she had work and tried to leave, Zhang Daniao attempted to stop her, but she declared, "Let go. We have already broken up." Ye Zi and their friends tried to mediate, urging them to talk it over, reminding Liu Xinran how long they had been together.
Liu Xinran insisted it was between her and Zhang Daniao, telling their friends to leave them alone. Zhang Daniao, hurt, asked if she truly wanted him to leave and break up. He then walked out, saying, "Ok, I leave." The friends questioned Liu Xinran about the sudden breakup, but she only asked for time, promising to talk when she was ready. After this, the friends dispersed.
On her way home, Ye Zi realized she had left her wallet at the bar and returned to retrieve it. The proprietress handed her two wallets: hers and another one that Xiang Zeyi had previously left behind. Ye Zi recognized the second wallet as the one she had given him. At that moment, Xiang Zeyi walked into the bar, also looking for his lost wallet, leading to their unexpected reunion.
Episode 12 Recap
Ye Zi and Xiang Zeyi unexpectedly encountered each other at the bar. They sat together at the counter for a long time without exchanging a word. As Xiang Zeyi walked Ye Zi home, her shoelace came undone. Just as Ye Zi prepared to bend down, Xiang Zeyi, as always, knelt to tie it for her. After tying her shoelace, he embraced her and softly said, "I'm sorry."
Ye Zi then told him, "I gotta go," and walked away, with Xiang Zeyi watching her until she was out of sight. A few days later, Ye Zi and Zhu Xuan discussed how they hadn't heard from Liu Xinran. Zhu Xuan mentioned Liu Xinran hadn't even updated her WeChat Moments. Ye Zi tried calling her, but there was no answer. Zhu Xuan worried, "Anything happened to her?" She tried calling too, speculating, "Maybe she doesn't want to answer your call."
Ye Zi noted that Zhu Xuan also couldn't get through to her. Just then, Cheng Xi called Ye Zi, equally concerned. Cheng Xi revealed that Liu Xinran hadn't answered her calls for days and that she felt worried because Liu Xinran had never been like this before. Ye Zi and Zhu Xuan agreed that it was unusual.
Ye Zi suggested that Cheng Xi go to Liu Xinran's workplace to check on her, while she and Zhu Xuan would try to find Zhang Daniao first. Ye Zi called Zhang Daniao, but an internet cafe staff member answered, identifying it as Zhang Daniao's phone and explaining that he was asleep, having played games for three days and nights. The staff member asked them to pick him up.
Ye Zi and Zhu Xuan went to the internet cafe and found Zhang Daniao. Zhu Xuan woke him up and demanded to know where Liu Xinran was, but Zhang Daniao only said he had called her that morning and didn't know anything amiss. Ye Zi sternly told him, "You should have cared about her earlier." They then left to meet Cheng Xi at Liu Xinran's workplace. When they arrived at Liu Xinran's workplace, Cheng Xi was already there.
She confirmed Liu Xinran was inside but admitted she didn't dare to approach her alone. Undeterred, Zhu Xuan pulled Ye Zi and Cheng Xi inside. To their surprise, they saw Liu Xinran getting into a sports car with Mr. Jiang and driving away. Convinced something was amiss, Zhu Xuan quickly hailed a taxi, instructing the driver to follow the car.
She urged him to drive faster as they were losing sight of the car, but the taxi driver explained his car couldn't match the speed of a luxury vehicle. Ye Zi cautioned Zhu Xuan to prioritize safety. Cheng Xi wondered aloud who the man was and if Liu Xinran had broken up with Zhang Daniao because of him. Zhu Xuan vehemently denied it, asserting that Liu Xinran was not that kind of person.
Ye Zi suggested they continue following to see what was happening. They eventually trailed Liu Xinran and Mr. Jiang to a restaurant. Inside the restaurant, Ye Zi, Zhu Xuan, and Cheng Xi covertly watched Liu Xinran and Mr. Jiang from behind the bar. Mr. Jiang praised Liu Xinran's project and patted her shoulder. Zhu Xuan was about to intervene but Ye Zi stopped her. Suddenly, Ye Zi received a call from Lin Sen.
He sounded urgent, asking if Ye Zi was with Liu Xinran as he had tried calling Liu Xinran many times without success. He informed Ye Zi that Liu Xinran's sister, Liu Xinyu, was critically ill and in Lin Sen's hospital, urging Liu Xinran to come immediately. Ye Zi quickly told Liu Xinran that something had happened to Xinyu and she needed to go. Liu Xinran apologized to Mr. Jiang, saying she'd explain later, as Ye Zi pulled her away.
As they left, Zhu Xuan confronted Mr. Jiang, warning him that Liu Xinran had a boyfriend and telling him not to disturb her life. At the hospital, Liu Xinran, looking distressed, asked Lin Sen about her sister. Lin Sen reassured her that Xinyu was out of danger thanks to prompt rescue. Ye Zi helped Liu Xinran sit down, trying to calm her. Later, Zhu Xuan asked Lin Sen what exactly happened to Liu Xinran's sister.
Lin Sen explained that Xinyu suffered from congenital heart disease and had undergone several operations, but they hadn't been very effective, and the medical fees were very expensive. Cheng Xi added that she only knew Liu Xinyu was always weak and never expected it to be such a severe illness, realizing Liu Xinran must have had a very hard time over the years to cure her sister.
Ye Zi remarked that Liu Xinran always bore everything by herself because she didn't want to worry them. Ye Zi then suggested to Zhu Xuan and Cheng Xi that they should gather money for the operation, to which both readily agreed, with Cheng Xi promising to take care of Liu Xinran.
Zhu Xuan then expressed her worry to Ye Zi, wondering if Liu Xinran had broken up with Zhang Daniao and was now with Mr. Jiang because of money, given her sister's illness. Early the next morning, Zhang Daniao arrived at Xiang Zeyi's place carrying several bottles of wine, clearly upset. He urged Xiang Zeyi to drink with him, but Xiang Zeyi tried to dissuade him from drinking and offered coffee instead.
Zhang Daniao insisted on drinking, stating, "I'm here to drink wines with you," and, "you are the only guy that will drink with me." Xiang Zeyi pressed him to reveal what happened, and Zhang Daniao finally confessed, "I have broken up with Xinrang." Xiang Zeyi commented that arguments were normal, but Zhang Daniao insisted, "But it's different this time." He lamented, "I'm really losing her." Xiang Zeyi asked what he had done to annoy her.
Zhang Daniao claimed he had done nothing wrong and felt he shouldn't concede this time, despite always making concessions in their past quarrels and dedicating all his time to her outside of training. He wondered if that wasn't enough. Xiang Zeyi advised him to step back and think for Liu Xinran's sake. Zhang Daniao questioned this, frustrated that Liu Xinran couldn't tell him her difficulties so they could face them together.
He felt she had given up too easily and bitterly concluded, "She has never trusted me. Never." He wondered, "What's the meaning for me to be her boyfriend then?" At that moment, Zhang Daniao accidentally knocked over a bottle, which brought back a memory from their university days. In the flashback, Zhang Daniao had accidentally broken a ceramic piece Liu Xinran had painstakingly created.
Liu Xinran was angry, but Zhang Daniao desperately apologized, promising to stick it back together and never be careless again. Liu Xinran said she would make a new one, but warned him never to do it again, calling him careless, "just like a little kid." Zhang Daniao then promised to carry her works safely.
Despite forgiving him, Liu Xinran then told Zhang Daniao she couldn't date him until the holiday, refusing to explain why, only saying "It's nothing" and "Stop asking." During their college days, Ye Zi and Xiang Zeyi were inseparable. One time, Ye Zi mentioned that she would have a part-time job teaching children to paint at her relative's class during the summer holiday, which meant fewer chances for them to meet.
Xiang Zeyi jokingly asked why she would cry about it, then teased her by saying, "I will abduct you," to which Ye Zi retorted that he was "too old to sell" and "valueless." Later, Xiang Zeyi, looking intently at Ye Zi, proposed, "Let's meet our parents after graduation." Ye Zi, laughing, immediately responded, "Why? I'm not going to marry you! You got no face!"
Xiang Zeyi complained it was the second time she had abandoned his "handsome face," but Ye Zi declared it the third, insisting he had "no face." Xiang Zeyi then amusingly stated, "So what? I got no face. This is how I got no face today," and tried to kiss her, asking, "Why not dodge me?" Later, Xiang Zeyi also visited Ye Zi at her part-time painting class, playfully hitting a child's head with a snowball.
He questioned the child if he was Ye Zi's boyfriend, claiming to be her real boyfriend. The child, wanting to draw with Ye Zi, declared, "No, you aren't. I'm her boyfriend." Xiang Zeyi teasingly asked if the child wanted to compete with him for his girlfriend, then "finished" the child's drawing, calling it untalented. Ye Zi intervened, praising the child's work. Xiang Zeyi then offered to praise the child's painting only if he admitted Ye Zi was his girlfriend.
The child eventually asked Ye Zi if she was his girlfriend, and Xiang Zeyi proudly declared him a "good boy" when the child agreed. Meanwhile, Liu Xinran went to the school gate to pick up her younger sister, Liu Xinyu. Zhu Xuan was with her and, upon meeting Xinyu, decided to bring her back to their dorm, despite Liu Xinran's concerns about inconvenience and Mrs. Lee's inspections.
Later that night, while Liu Xinran was drawing for Xinyu, Zhu Xuan playfully painted Xinyu's nails. Zhu Xuan also observed the stark differences in personality between Liu Xinran and Xinyu, joking if they were truly sisters. The girls were suddenly alerted by Mrs. Lee knocking on their door for a room check. Liu Xinran instructed Zhu Xuan to distract Mrs. Lee while Cheng Xi helped hide Xinyu in the closet.
Zhu Xuan engaged Mrs. Lee in conversation, complimenting her new glasses and fabricating a story about a theft involving lovers climbing through balconies to get her to leave. After Mrs. Lee departed, Liu Xinran frantically searched for Xinyu, then sternly scolded Zhu Xuan for hiding her sister in the closet, accusing her of lacking common sense. Zhu Xuan, unaware of Xinyu's delicate health, felt wronged, claiming "Nothing happened, ok?" and retorted, "What's the big deal?"
She angrily questioned if having a sister made Liu Xinran special. Later, a conversation between the two sisters revealed Xinyu's fragile state, as she asked Liu Xinran, "What will happen after people die?" and spoke of her grandmother's belief that people go to a "sea of bitterness" to see those they miss. Liu Xinran comforted her, telling her to stop thinking about it and get some sleep.
Zhu Xuan, witnessing the tender yet troubling exchange, picked up her phone to call Zhang Daniao. At the hospital, Zhang Daniao quickly asked about Liu Xinran, and Lin Sen informed him that she was accompanying her sister. Lin Sen then told Ye Zi he was getting off work and offered to drive her home. As they prepared to leave, Xiang Zeyi, who had just arrived with Zhang Daniao, witnessed Lin Sen's offer to Ye Zi.
He looked at Ye Zi for a moment, then turned and walked away. Zhang Daniao confronted Liu Xinran, angrily asking, "Why don't you tell me? Have you ever regarded me as your boyfriend?" Liu Xinran coldly responded, "Would it be any help if I told you?"
Zhang Daniao insisted they could find solutions together, but Liu Xinran dismissed him, telling him to "Just talk with your team about how to get the battlefield," and to "get out immediately" without bothering her sister. Zhang Daniao, hurt by her words and feeling like she saw him as useless, replied sarcastically, "Right. I'm such a useless man in your mind, right?"
Liu Xinran reiterated her desire for him to leave, telling him, "You are such a man in my eyes. Useless. I beg you to get out. I don't want to see you anymore in my life." Facing her firm resolve, Zhang Daniao finally agreed, "Ok, Liu Xinrang, I agree to break up with you. We will never meet again from now on," before storming out.
Episode 13 Recap
Manager Shao called Xiang Zeyi, asking to meet. Manager Shao informed Xiang Zeyi that he had attended a board meeting that day where one of the directors mentioned an issue concerning Xiang Zeyi. Manager Shao expressed his reluctance to believe what he heard and wanted to hear Xiang Zeyi's side of the story, emphasizing that no one could help him if he refused to disclose the truth.
After their conversation, Xiang Zeyi visited Gu Yishan, who was lying in a hospital bed. It was because of Gu Yishan that Xiang Zeyi had dropped out of college. During their university days, Xiang Zeyi had secured a contract with Sanzhu Press for his work, "The King of Medicine," even before graduation. He was in the process of submitting his finished artwork.
On his way to the publisher, he encountered Xu Wenjie, who invited him to her final fashion show before graduation. Xiang Zeyi declined, stating he was not available. Xu Wenjie insisted it was her last show and urged him to reconsider. Gu Yishan, who had been pursuing Xu Wenjie, saw them and angrily confronted Xiang Zeyi, assuming he was bullying Xu Wenjie.
Xu Wenjie, frustrated by Xiang Zeyi's rejection and Gu Yishan's meddling, chided Gu Yishan, asking him to look in a mirror and criticizing him for comparing himself to Xiang Zeyi. Xiang Zeyi picked up his artwork and left for the publisher. Upon arrival, Editor Yu, who was in charge of his project, was not in the office.
Xiang Zeyi left his artwork and his resume with the receptionist, with a note bearing his name, asking her to pass them to Editor Yu. One evening, Xiang Zeyi, Zhang Daniao, and Lin Feng gathered Ye Zi and her roommates for a surprise, celebrating their impending graduation. They set off fireworks in a quiet corner of the campus, but a security guard discovered them and gave chase. The group managed to escape, relieved that they weren't caught.
As they caught their breath, Liu Xinran's stomach rumbled, indicating she was hungry. Zhang Daniao asked her to wait there while he went to get food. He returned with bread and water. Noticing Liu Xinran hadn't been eating much lately, he asked why. She claimed she was on a diet. Zhang Daniao, sensing something was amiss, told her that she must confide in him if anything was bothering her, assuring her that he would find a solution.
Liu Xinran promised to tell him if she had any problems. Zhang Daniao then called himself her "personal star" and offered her a wish, playfully stating he now "owed her a wish for life." Around the same time, Xiang Zeyi had completed an artwork depicting love. His professor, an older man, praised it enthusiastically, declaring it "the power of love."
Xiang Zeyi promised to send him a copy once it was published, so he could truly feel "the power of love." The professor then challenged Xiang Zeyi to a bet, asking if he would still love Ye Zi as fiercely in ten years. Xiang Zeyi confidently asserted that he would. Manager Shao, having learned that Xiang Zeyi's self-created cartoon was about to be published by Sanzhu Press, sought him out.
Manager Shao expressed his admiration for Xiang Zeyi's creativity, acknowledging that he had been observing him since the cartoon competition and was particularly impressed by his courage in publicly expressing his love for Ye Zi. He offered Xiang Zeyi a position at his company after graduation, suggesting he could work under the drawing director to gain more experience, which Xiang Zeyi eagerly accepted.
Meanwhile, Ye Zi had been feeling uneasy and anxious about Xiang Zeyi's imminent graduation, sensing that something was about to happen. Her friend, Zhu Xuan, teased her, wondering if she feared Xiang Zeyi might propose or even leave her. Xiang Zeyi found Ye Zi and asked what was wrong. She confessed to feeling a sense of unease, to which Xiang Zeyi responded, understanding her worries that they might not see each other often after he graduated.
He promised to visit her whenever he was available, reassuring her. Playfully, she called him an "idiot." They then parted ways, walking in opposite directions down the corridor. Gu Yishan visited his uncle, the head of the publishing house where Xiang Zeyi had submitted his artwork. He spotted Xiang Zeyi's drawings at the reception desk, removed the sticky note with Xiang Zeyi's name, and presented the artwork to his uncle, claiming it as his own.
His uncle was very impressed with the work, praising Gu Yishan's supposed progress. However, Editor Yu, who entered the office for a signature, immediately recognized the artwork as Xiang Zeyi's. Gu Yishan vehemently insisted it was his creation and accused Xiang Zeyi of plagiarism, claiming Xiang Zeyi had no "finishing edition" and was "copying mine." He urged his uncle to believe him and prevent others from "robbing" his work.
His uncle, believing Gu Yishan, instructed Editor Yu to contact Xiang Zeyi, cancel his contract, and reserve the right to pursue legal action for copyright infringement. Editor Yu then called Xiang Zeyi, informing him that there was an issue with his works and he needed to come to the press immediately. Xiang Zeyi rushed to the publisher and, seeing Gu Yishan's name mentioned in relation to the dispute, realized he was being framed.
He left the publisher in a rage to confront Gu Yishan. He encountered Xu Wenjie, who informed him that Gu Yishan had stolen his artwork and advised him to go back and explain the situation to the publisher. However, Xiang Zeyi, fueled by anger, went straight to the snack street, a place Gu Yishan frequently visited. Xiang Zeyi found Gu Yishan and angrily confronted him, calling him a "thief."
Gu Yishan's accomplices emerged from the shadows and ambushed Xiang Zeyi, beating him severely. During the assault, Gu Yishan taunted Xiang Zeyi, declaring that the drawings were now his and would always be his. After the beating, Gu Yishan and his friends left Xiang Zeyi battered and bleeding. Xiang Zeyi, despite his injuries, mustered his remaining strength and fought back, eventually knocking Gu Yishan unconscious. Gu Yishan's friends panicked and fled the scene. After that night, Xiang Zeyi disappeared.
Ye Zi tried desperately to find him for a week, enlisting Zhang Daniao's help, but they couldn't reach him, and even the university claimed ignorance of his whereabouts. Ye Zi was frustrated, wondering how someone could just disappear. Other students tried to console her, suggesting Xiang Zeyi might be preparing a surprise. However, on graduation day, a friend finally informed Ye Zi that the college confirmed Xiang Zeyi had dropped out voluntarily.
Ye Zi was devastated and called Xiang Zeyi a "big liar." Ten years later, Ye Zi arranged to meet Xiang Zeyi at a bar, desperate for an explanation for his disappearance. However, Xiang Zeyi remained silent, unwilling to divulge the truth. Just as Ye Zi pressed him further, her phone rang. It was Lin Sen, calling with urgent news: something had happened to Liu Xinyu. Ye Zi and Xiang Zeyi immediately rushed to the hospital. Unfortunately, they arrived too late.
Liu Xinyu had already passed away, and her body was no longer in the ward. They found Liu Xinran weeping uncontrollably, leaning on a table. Soon after, Zhang Daniao arrived and, upon seeing Liu Xinran's grief, embraced her tightly. A narration reflected on the fleeting nature of life, the regret of not saying goodbye, and the importance of cherishing what one has before it's too late.
Episode 14 Recap
Ye Zi, feeling dispirited since Xiang Zeyi's disappearance, often found herself exhausted. One night, she fell asleep in the art studio. Lin Sen found her there, and Ye Zi woke up, momentarily calling out "Zeyi," thinking he had returned. Lin Sen had been searching for her all night, alerted by Zhu Xuan, and urged her to return to the dormitory and get some sleep, especially since the deadline for her "ideal script" project was the next day.
Ye Zi explained she was working to finish it and admitted the struggles of art students to find work, particularly when working independently, as she couldn't meet the high requirements of an art club. Lin Sen encouraged her, confident she wouldn't be defeated by difficulties. Back at the dorm, Ye Zi's roommates were waiting for her to have a hotpot meal. They were all excited, discussing their future plans.
Cheng Xi and Liu Xinran both decided to stay in the city, hoping to find jobs and settle down so the four friends could remain together. Later that evening, Ye Zi became increasingly emotional as she drank. Zhu Xuan directly asked if she still missed Xiang Zeyi. Ye Zi quietly admitted it would be a lie to say she didn't, as he was her first love.
However, she affirmed that he was merely a part of her college life, just a memory. Despite her brave words, the memories overwhelmed her, and she eventually broke down in Zhu Xuan's arms, weeping for Xiang Zeyi. After moving out of the school dormitory, Ye Zi found herself unable to sleep one night. She took out a box filled with all the gifts and mementos Xiang Zeyi had given her. Each item brought back a flood of memories.
After carefully looking through everything, she carried the box to a downstairs trash can and discarded its contents. Returning to her room, she sat on her bed and cried. Later, she also went to a bar they once frequented and took down a painting Xiang Zeyi had given her, which had hung on the wall there, symbolizing that she would never think of Xiang Zeyi again.
On graduation day, Ye Zi and her roommates returned to the school to take one last stroll. The girls decided to take a commemorative photo together. They spotted the class monitor and asked him to use Ye Zi's phone to capture a picture, preserving their four years of youth. Later, Ye Zi went to Director Shao's office for a meeting about a collaboration.
She arrived first, and soon Director Shao entered with another man, introducing him as Mr. Xiang Hui, the animation director for the project. When Ye Zi looked up, she realized "Mr. Xiang Hui" was none other than Xiang Zeyi. Director Shao, knowing they had things to say, made an excuse to leave, giving them a moment alone. The reunion was awkward; after years apart, there was little to say.
Ye Zi formally introduced herself as if they were strangers, which visibly pained Xiang Zeyi. They exchanged a brief handshake, and Ye Zi quickly excused herself, stating it was late and they could discuss the project later. Zhu Xuan was surprised to learn that Ye Zi would be working with Xiang Zeyi, or rather, Mr. Xiang Hui, asking when he changed his name. Before she could fully process this, Cheng Xi arrived, suggesting they go check on Liu Xinran.
Zhu Xuan disagreed, explaining that after Xinyu's passing, Liu Xinran needed space to release all her feelings and that they shouldn't disturb her. Zhu Xuan reminded Cheng Xi of her own past advice: to care for someone in a way they can accept, and right now, Liu Xinran needed to grieve without interruption. Despite their slight disagreement, they ultimately decided to try inviting Liu Xinran to a hotpot dinner at Ye Zi's apartment rooftop, unsure if she would come.
The three friends waited for a long time, eventually losing hope, but Liu Xinran finally appeared, looking distressed. They tried to keep the conversation light, focusing on work, but when Zhu Xuan saw Xinyu's favorite dish, she accidentally brought up Xinyu, immediately regretting it. Liu Xinran soon began to cry, reminiscing about Xinyu, who was ten years younger and had always promised to protect her, yet left too soon.
Liu Xinran tearfully recalled Xinyu's birth during a cold winter, her first smile, how she diligently searched for Liu Xinran's name on the high school wall, and even brought her mother's homemade meals to school, waiting outside to ensure Liu Xinran ate. She spoke of Xinyu's innocent questions about bullies and her unwavering promise of protection.
Liu Xinran lamented that she had believed all problems would be solved when they grew up, only to find that more problems arose after they matured. Seeing Liu Xinran completely drunk, Ye Zi sent a text message to Zhang Daniao to pick her up. Meanwhile, at Xiang Zeyi's home, Zhang Daniao received Ye Zi's message. Scared to go alone, he convinced Xiang Zeyi to accompany him, teasing him about Ye Zi being there.
When Zhang Daniao and Xiang Zeyi arrived at Ye Zi's place, Zhu Xuan and Cheng Xi left. Zhang Daniao gently took Liu Xinran home, where he apologized to her, acknowledging his mistakes and promising to be her "star" to grant wishes, saying he would always be with her. They reconciled, resolving their past issues. Back at Ye Zi's apartment, with only Ye Zi and Xiang Zeyi left, she walked to the edge of the rooftop.
She confronted him, referring to him as "Mr. Xiang Hui" and comparing him to the Xiang Zeyi she knew in college. She accused him of not being as brave, as careful, gentle, or humorous as her old friend. She tearfully recounted how the "old Xiang Zeyi" liked to touch her hair, prepared surprises, and made many promises, but then one day, he simply disappeared. She declared that perhaps he had died.
Overwhelmed by emotion and the unresolved questions of his disappearance, Ye Zi could not resist and embraced Xiang Zeyi. Separately, Lin Sen and Yuan Lang were drinking at a bar. Yuan Lang encouraged Lin Sen to pursue Ye Zi, but Lin Sen revealed he had been in love with Ye Zi for fifteen years and felt she pretended not to notice his feelings.
Despite knowing it might be a futile effort, Lin Sen decided he wouldn't give up easily and would try one more time to get an answer from Ye Zi. Yuan Lang, as his brother, offered his full support in his pursuit of Ye Zi.
Episode 15 Recap
Having reconciled with Liu Xinran, Zhang Daniao joined Xiang Zeyi on his morning run, noting Xiang Zeyi's energetic state. Zhang Daniao began by inquiring about Xiang Zeyi's current working relationship with Ye Zi, quickly apologizing for bringing it up. However, he stressed that the truth about the past would inevitably come out, as "paper can't hold fire for long," and trying to suppress it would only cause more heartache.
He believed Xiang Zeyi was his own biggest obstacle, the only one unable to let go of the past. Xiang Zeyi acknowledged Zhang Daniao might be right but insisted it was not yet the time. Drawing from his own experience with Liu Xinran, Zhang Daniao explained that all women truly desire is someone to rely on, someone they can trust if a man is brave enough to make a decision.
He urged Xiang Zeyi to face his past, asking where the brave Xiang Zeyi, who once dared to love and hate without caring for others' opinions, had gone. Xiang Zeyi responded thoughtfully, observing that "the further you go, the longer your shadow gets," and questioned if one could ever truly leave their own shadow behind. Meanwhile, Shao's company's anniversary party invitation had arrived at Ye Zi’s company.
Zhu Xuan asked Ye Zi if she would be attending and who her plus-one would be. Ye Zi replied, "Xiang Zeyi." Zhu Xuan was astonished, unable to comprehend how the two could be interacting this way. Her friends then discussed "Xiang Hui" (Xiang Zeyi's current identity), noting that he was now the animation director at Shao's company, having successfully operated several major programs and earned a strong reputation in the field.
They referred to him as "our big Shige," speculating that he must have studied abroad during his years of absence to return as an animation legend. Later, Xiang Zeyi, dressed in a black suit, arrived to pick up Ye Zi for the party, who was also wearing an elegant black long dress. The two looked like a match made in heaven.
At the party, Mr. Shao, after playfully commenting on what a great couple Xiang Hui and Ye Zi made, informed Ye Zi that he needed to "borrow" Xiang Hui because many attendees were curious to meet their distinguished "Director Xiang." He asked Ye Zi if she would be alright on her own, and she assured him she would be. Xiang Hui was then introduced to several important clients, including Mr. Xing, with whom he shared toasts, discussing future programs.
Mr. Xing even joked about trying to poach the young and talented Xiang Hui from Mr. Shao's company. Feeling uncomfortable amidst the crowds and networking, Xiang Zeyi eventually slipped away to the garden for fresh air. Ye Zi followed him with a drink, finding him outside. She commented on his discomfort inside, and he confirmed that "too many people makes me uncomfortable."
Ye Zi admitted that her first cocktail party had left her too nervous to even hold a glass or speak to anyone, but Xiang Zeyi noted she was no longer that shy girl. Ye Zi mused that perhaps everyone grows up and learns to compromise, acknowledging that while it can be difficult, one can also gain something from it. When Xiang Zeyi asked what she had gained, she playfully replied, "Never getting drunk?"
She then asked if it was his first time seeing her drink, to which he replied, "No, I've seen it for many times." The next day at work, Mr. Shao approached Xiang Hui about an issue with a storyboard. He explained that clients requested changes to the story and character clothing colors for the Pre-production Meeting (PPM).
Xiang Hui argued that such changes would cause character colors to clash with backgrounds and suggested presenting their professional opinion instead of simply complying. Mr. Shao, while acknowledging Xiang Hui's best efforts, proposed that Xiang Hui provide two options: his suggested plan and one that aligned with the client's requests. Xiang Hui questioned the need for a second plan when he believed his initial one was the best.
Mr. Shao clarified that offering choices made the company appear more professional and careful to clients, and that presenting two plans also served as a professional challenge. He urged Xiang Hui to proceed, confident in his ability. A similar professional challenge arose for Ye Zi. Zhu Xuan returned to the studio distraught after being reprimanded by chief editor Yu at the publishing house.
Ye Zi asked what was wrong, and Zhu Xuan, visibly angry, thrust the manuscript at her, demanding she "look for yourself." Zhu Xuan recounted how she had been "yelled at" because Ye Zi's submitted traditional artwork did not match the agreed-upon "modern urban style" publishing theme for the season. Ye Zi insisted she had expressed her refusal to change the style during the initial meeting. Zhu Xuan reminded her that she had agreed to some modifications to secure the contract.
Ye Zi retorted that she had also clearly stated her intention to maintain the studio's unique style. Zhu Xuan accused Ye Zi of "throwing me under the bus," asking what she was supposed to tell the publishers and why Ye Zi couldn't simply change one episode. Ye Zi passionately defended the importance of their "personal style" and questioned the purpose of the studio if they had to compromise their artistic integrity for market demands.
Zhu Xuan, increasingly frustrated, urged Ye Zi to be "realistic" and temporarily set aside her "so-called persistence" to focus on their current livelihood. She pointed out that after moving into a new office and hosting an "idealistic exhibition" for Ye Zi, the studio was struggling financially, and their staff depended on them.
Ye Zi countered by highlighting how few people could truly make a living solely from their passions, admitting her luck but questioning the point of the studio if it meant constant compromise. Zhu Xuan, exasperated, called Ye Zi "stubborn and selfish," which Ye Zi returned by labeling Zhu Xuan "rude and reckless," accusing her of not considering the studio's future or their collective well-being. Zhu Xuan warned that Ye Zi would understand the consequences if the studio eventually collapsed.
At that moment, Liu Xinran and Cheng Xi arrived, immediately sensing the serious nature of the argument. They intervened, urging both women to calm down and talk through the issues. Zhu Xuan, still fuming, pushed the rejected work toward Ye Zi, threatening to lose the contract, to which Ye Zi dared her to lose the contract with her as well.
Liu Xinran and Cheng Xi quickly separated them, insisting they sit down and discuss the problem rationally, with Cheng Xi humorously asking if they were "having a divorce." Liu Xinran reassured them that "couples always make up" and that nothing was truly unsolvable. Focusing on the immediate crisis, they recognized the urgency of meeting chief editor Yu's demands. Liu Xinran offered her assistance, and Cheng Xi volunteered her help, declaring, "Eight hands.
Let's get to work," as they divided up the tasks to revise the drawings. Later, Xiang Zeyi was working overtime at home, feeling restless. Suddenly, the doorbell rang, and it was Xu Wenjie. She explained that she had been worried about him, as he had been ignoring her calls and she hadn't seen him recently. Xiang Zeyi questioned her concern, to which she responded that she worried if he was doing well.
He curtly replied that he was doing "so well that I've forgotten about where I was for the past years." Xu Wenjie admitted that "that thing happened all because of me" and expressed her desire to help, recalling how he had refused to see her, which had deeply affected her. She now wished to "make up to you." Xiang Zeyi, filled with bitterness, asked how she intended to help or make amends.
He lamented that he "could've had good times with the one I loved" but now had "nothing," living in "terror" and desperately trying to forget his past identity. He also recalled the painful memories of his time in prison; how he once secretly returned to school to see Ye Zi only to be discovered by Lin Sen, who questioned his whereabouts before he fled, and how his promising life was completely ruined during those years.
He told her she had "no idea how I made through the past years in there." He brought up Ye Zi, stating it was "unfair to her," and questioned if her apologies or proposed compensation could truly resolve anything. Xu Wenjie conceded that it was "too late for me to say or do anything," but pleaded with him to promise one thing: "Take good care of Yezi for me."
He acknowledged her request with a simple "Thanks," then firmly told her to "Leave. I don't want to see you again," and sent her away. As she left, Xu Wenjie reflected on her own pain, acknowledging that she had "paid for my mistakes" and had "nothing to say with you."
She confessed that her "heart breaks seeing you like this" and revealed that she had loved him for years, but had finally given up on pursuing a relationship, now only wishing for him to have a good life and "start over." After Xu Wenjie's visit, Xiang Zeyi decided to move again. Zhang Daniao helped him find a new place, belonging to an old friend who had gone abroad.
Zhang Daniao called Xiang Zeyi to check if he was settling in, and Xiang Zeyi assured him he could adapt to any environment, thanking his friend. After the call, Xiang Zeyi reflected on his painful days after prison, where he was afraid of being recognized, always wearing dark clothes and a hat, and even quick trips to buy groceries were filled with terror. Zhang Daniao then reminded him about Ye Zi's upcoming exhibition and urged him to keep their secret.
Xiang Zeyi confirmed he knew. Looking at a photo of Ye Zi, a faint smile crossed his face. Although he hesitated for a long time and found those days very painful, he eventually composed himself, put on dark clothes, and went to see Ye Zi's art exhibition.
Episode 16 Recap
Zhang Daniao, preparing to propose to Liu Xinran, repeatedly asked Xiang Zeyi for help practicing his proposal speech. Zhang Daniao confessed to Xiang Zeyi that he found the "sweetest part" of the proposal too embarrassing to say to Liu Xinran, even though he could say it easily to Xiang Zeyi. He emphasized that he only intended to propose once in his lifetime and wished for it to be a success.
Xiang Zeyi then asked if he was truly committed to marrying Liu Xinran, to which Zhang Daniao firmly replied that she was the only one he would marry. Xiang Zeyi then advised him to express his determination directly to Liu Xinran, suggesting a simple line: "I, Zhang Daniao, am the one who will live with you forever." Zhang Daniao then practiced his proposal once more, saying, "Liu Xinran, marry me. I'll take care of you in my whole life."
Xiang Zeyi reflected that promising eternal love is not easy, and sometimes, even restarting requires immense courage. Zhang Daniao then left, feeling prepared. After Zhang Daniao departed, Xiang Zeyi made a phone call to Ye Zi. Ye Zi, who had just woken up and was having breakfast, had just finished a call with her mother.
Her mother had asked if she and Lin Sen were having problems because he hadn't been coming over for meals, but Ye Zi brushed her off. When Xiang Zeyi called, he mentioned her phone was busy. Ye Zi explained she was talking to her mother. Xiang Zeyi then requested to meet her at her studio in an hour to discuss business.
An hour later, Ye Zi arrived at her studio, feeling a mix of nerves and excitement to meet Xiang Zeyi. She began to tidy up her cluttered workspace. Xiang Zeyi arrived promptly. Their work discussion proceeded efficiently, as Ye Zi had prepared a comprehensive plan, detailing their requirements, cooperation strategy, character settings, and animation adjustments. She also provided suggestions based on her research of the overseas team.
Xiang Zeyi approved her proposals, stating he would manage communication with the scriptwriter and the overseas team, acknowledging her suggestions were pertinent. After their meeting, Ye Zi led Xiang Zeyi to the small garden outside her studio, where Zhu Xuan had bought several landscape plants. Ye Zi was watering them, and Xiang Zeyi offered to help. Their task quickly turned into a playful water fight, leaving them both drenched. Back inside the studio, Ye Zi offered Xiang Zeyi a towel.
He stared at her for a moment before gently taking the towel and drying her hair instead. Ye Zi then called him Zeying and asked why he had changed his name. He explained that changing his name represented starting a new life. Elsewhere, Lin Sen received a phone call from Ye Zi's mother, who falsely claimed Ye Zi's father was unwell and asked him to visit.
Lin Sen hurried to their home, only to discover it was a pretext for him to have dinner with them, and Ye Zi was not even there. He politely excused himself, citing urgent hospital duties, and left despite Ye Zi's mother's insistence. Observing the ongoing issues between Lin Sen and Ye Zi, Ye Zi's mother devised another plan. She obtained two restaurant coupons, intending to give one to each of them, hoping they would go out and eat together.
Meanwhile, Yuan Lang returned home to find Zhu Xuan still out. He waited for her on the sofa. When Zhu Xuan finally returned late from a party, Yuan Lang gently questioned her about her late return and asked if she could come home earlier. Zhu Xuan, however, perceived his concern as an interrogation, became upset, and went to bed without further discussion.
Later, Ye Zi waited alone at a restaurant for Lin Sen, who was supposed to join her for dinner using one of the coupons. Unexpectedly, Xiang Zeyi appeared. He explained he was just passing by after a business meeting with Mr. Shao and stopped to say hello when he saw her. Ye Zi, finding it boring to eat alone, invited him to join her, and he readily accepted. At that very moment, Lin Sen arrived at the restaurant.
Seeing Ye Zi and Xiang Zeyi already seated and eating together, he quietly drove away without entering. He parked his car by the roadside, lost in memories of his younger days with Ye Zi. He remembered finding a beautiful, quiet spot near their school for her to practice painting for her art academy entrance exam. They shared many happy and carefree moments there, full of laughter.
Snapping out of his reverie, Lin Sen drove off, leaving behind a trail of cigarette butts. As Yuan Lang's birthday approached, Zhu Xuan was secretly busy making a cake for him. During this time, Cheng Xi called Ye Zi, saying she had left her USB drive at the studio. Ye Zi arranged for Wu Kai to deliver it to Cheng Xi, who also went by Xiaoxi.
On the day of Yuan Lang's birthday, Lin Sen, Liu Xinran, Cheng Xi, and Zhang Daniao gathered at Yuan Lang's house to decorate for the celebration. Zhu Xuan, however, was running late because she went to get the cake.
While waiting, the friends shared stories, including Liu Xinran's confession about secretly using Zhu Xuan's towel to clean spilled milk tea at school and Cheng Xi admitting she was the one who broke Ye Zi's pencil, though Zhu Xuan had taken the blame for it. Lin Sen expressed concern about Zhu Xuan's mysterious behavior lately, but Zhang Daniao reassured him that every girl has her secrets. As time passed, Yuan Lang decided to go pick up Zhu Xuan himself.
Zhu Xuan, carefully carrying the birthday cake she had poured so much effort into, encountered a drunk man on the street. He harassed her and, in the scuffle, knocked over the cake. Just then, Yuan Lang arrived, saw what was happening, and fiercely beat the drunk man before comforting a tearful Zhu Xuan. He assured her not to be afraid and that he was there for her.
Back at home, after Zhu Xuan had fallen asleep, Yuan Lang looked at the ruined cake, deeply moved by the love and effort she had put into making it for him.
Episode 17 Recap
Ye Zi and Xiang Zeyi visited a school art exhibition, both noting the improving skill and personal styles of the students. Ye Zi observed that Xiang Zeyi spoke as if he frequented the place, to which he replied he came more often than she thought. She wondered why she had never seen him there. Later, Xiang Zeyi suggested they take a walk around campus. Their stroll led them to the spot where they had once set off fireworks.
Ye Zi recalled how a security guard had chased them that night and questioned why he had only pursued them. Xiang Zeyi speculated that Zhang Daniao might have betrayed them, leading the guard to their location. Ye Zi, however, thought it was because Xiang Zeyi was "shining everywhere" at the time. Xiang Zeyi mentioned drawings related to Ye Zi, implying she knew the significance.
He reminisced about the good old days when they could talk and do as they pleased, regretting that they had both become "cowards" now. He felt that the current students might envy their past freedom, thinking that leaving campus felt like escaping a besieged city. Ye Zi then declared, "In or out of the wall, I’ll be wherever the one I care is." Lin Sen, visibly distracted and upset, was drinking at a bar, accompanied by Yuan Lang.
Yuan Lang surmised that Lin Sen's distress was again about Ye Zi. Lin Sen asked Yuan Lang if he had ever lied to Zhu Xuan. Yuan Lang affirmed he had not. Lin Sen confessed that he thought lying would be easy, but it made him feel incredibly guilty when it came to Ye Zi. Yuan Lang questioned why he would lie if he liked her.
Lin Sen reflected on their youth when Ye Zi would follow him, calling him "Lin Sen Gege" and confiding everything. Now, she simply called him "Lin Sen," and he felt a "paper" barrier between them, unable to see or truly know her anymore. Yuan Lang reassured him that he had "done good enough." Lin Sen expressed envy for Yuan Lang and Zhu Xuan, who, despite coming from different worlds, grew closer.
He lamented that he and Ye Zi were drifting further apart. Yuan Lang acknowledged his own luck in having his first love reciprocated. Lin Sen agreed that not everyone gets that, often only experiencing bittersweet first loves, and suggested his own 15-year-long, one-sided first love might finally be ending. He urged Yuan Lang to cherish Zhu Xuan. Ye Zi returned home, only to hear her parents in the kitchen discussing Lin Sen's impending arrival for dinner.
To avoid an awkward encounter, she quickly grabbed her bag to slip away, but upon opening the door, she bumped directly into Lin Sen. Ye Zi's mother had tried to arrange for the two to spend time together, but they sat in silence, making the situation uncomfortable. Lin Sen suggested they talk, and they went downstairs to sit on a bench.
Lin Sen recalled a children's park that used to be near their homes, where they often played after dinner, noting it was torn down two years prior, though he still sometimes visited it alone. Ye Zi explained that as a child, she initially disliked calling him "Lin Sen Gege" because they were nearly the same height and she didn't feel younger than him, but her father made her.
She then said that from the day she started calling him that, she had decided he was "Lin Sen Gege," and that would never change. Lin Sen expressed sadness, feeling that the childhood name had destined him to lose. Ye Zi acknowledged his unwavering presence and efforts over the years, apologizing for not being clear and allowing things to become awkward by remaining silent.
Lin Sen, however, told her not to blame herself, admitting he, too, had kept silent in hopes of having a chance. He realized he didn't speak up because he didn't want to lose her. Ye Zi wished they could return to how they were as children. Lin Sen confessed that liking her had become a habit that he needed to break, even if it took him a long time.
He concluded that he would rather cut off his romantic feelings than endure the awkwardness between them. He reaffirmed that he wished to remain her "Lin Sen Gege" forever, wanting only for her to lead a happy life. Ye Zi was touched and found it difficult to let go of the past, wondering why it couldn't have been them. Lin Sen responded that life is about the future, not the past.
He then suggested they return for dinner before Ye Zi's mother blamed him, asking her to keep their conversation a secret. Cheng Xi, a newly published author, was giving an interview at a cafe. She explained that while she majored in art in college, she found herself more drawn to reading, which led her to writing. Her inspirations primarily came from life and the stories of her friends.
When asked if the main character of her book was based on herself, she clarified that it was based on many people. After the interview, Wu Kai, who had been watching her from a distance, approached and offered to take her to dinner, mentioning that Ye Zi had told him Cheng Xi liked spicy food. Cheng Xi declined, stating she wasn't hungry and that she preferred to take a taxi rather than ride his motorcycle.
Wu Kai then suggested they take a taxi together, but she declined this, reiterating that they weren't suitable for each other, but Wu Kai persisted, asking for a chance to try. After a moment of thought, Cheng Xi accepted the helmet he offered and got on his motorcycle. Zhu Xuan met with Mr. Shao at his company to discuss a project. Mr. Shao praised her studio's complete proposal. Xiang Zeyi then arrived at the office for Mr. Shao's signature.
Mr. Shao, recognizing that Zhu Xuan and Xiang Zeyi were former college acquaintances, suggested they discuss the program over lunch while he attended a meeting. At the restaurant, Zhu Xuan directly asked Xiang Zeyi if he had returned solely for business or if he harbored other intentions, specifically asking if he wished to reconcile with Ye Zi. Xiang Zeyi began to speak but then hesitated, struggling for a clear answer.
Zhu Xuan interpreted his silence as a negative, but he quickly denied that was his meaning. She pressed him, accusing him of wanting to get back with Ye Zi. Xiang Zeyi remained silent. Zhu Xuan sternly told him that she didn't know or care about the details of his past disappearance or why he had suddenly vanished.
She warned him that if he intended to reunite with Ye Zi, he must first understand what Ye Zi truly needed and to treat her well, begging him not to hurt her again as he had done in the past. Xiang Zeyi acknowledged her words, and Zhu Xuan, having addressed both business and personal matters, left, instructing Xiang Zeyi to settle the bill. Zhang Daniao and Liu Xinran were at an internet cafe.
Liu Xinran noticed Zhang Daniao staring at her and asked what he was looking at, but he just smiled and deflected. As they were about to leave, Zhang Daniao stood in the center of the internet cafe and, pulling out a handwritten paper, began to publicly declare his love to Liu Xinran. He spoke passionately, comparing himself to a fairy priest and her to a shining star over Darnassus, guiding him home.
He promised to dedicate his life to her, making every "I" into "we," and being her "holy light for life." He then asked, "Liu Xinran, will you marry me? Say yes." Liu Xinran, deeply moved, playfully chided him for proposing with just a piece of paper. Zhang Daniao then produced a ring, admitting he made it himself and that it was ugly, but hoped she would like it.
He repeated his proposal, and Liu Xinran, with a happy "Say yes," instructed him to put the ring on her finger. Back home, Zhu Xuan watched Yuan Lang chop vegetables in the kitchen, remarking how handsome he looked while cooking. Yuan Lang jokingly replied that he looked handsome whenever he picked up a knife. Zhu Xuan suggested they make up for his last birthday, which they had missed. Yuan Lang declined, instead promising her a "huge gift."
Zhu Xuan, intrigued, tried to get him to reveal the surprise, but he insisted it was a "top secret" to maintain the romance, no matter how much she cajoled him. Ye Zi went to Xiang Zeyi's house for a discussion, but he wasn't there. After calling him, she located a spare key hidden under the carpet and let herself in. While inside, she discovered a box filled with comics that Xiang Zeyi had drawn for her.
These detailed their memories together and even included drawings that read, "I’ll draw one for you every day if you like it. Then I’d have a full box of them when I graduate. That box would be my proposal gift to you," and another depicting a mermaid with the text, "You like mermaid. Let’s name our kid Humaid." The discovery of these deeply personal and meaningful drawings stirred up her buried emotions. Just then, Xiang Zeyi returned.
Ye Zi, overwhelmed, tearfully demanded to know why he had left without a word, why he changed his name, and why he had reappeared in her life without considering her feelings. Before she could finish, Xiang Zeyi, seeing her distress, pulled her into a tight embrace.
Episode 18 Recap
Ye Zi, gazing at the drawings Xiang Zeyi had created, could no longer contain her emotions and pressed him for the real reason behind his sudden departure years ago. Xiang Zeyi, finally ready to reveal the truth, led her to the hospital where Gu Yishan was being treated. Outside Gu Yishan's ward, Xiang Zeyi confessed the full story, admitting that his journey of atonement had only just begun.
He explained that days before their graduation, an accident had occurred, leading to Gu Yishan's current comatose state. Xiang Zeyi took full responsibility, expressing deep guilt and believing he didn't deserve forgiveness, nor would anyone forgive him. He lamented that if he had been calmer, Gu Yishan would be healthy like them.
Ye Zi insisted it was merely an accident, but Xiang Zeyi clarified that it was more than that; he had ruined Gu Yishan’s life and his own parents' lives, and he had been unsure how to face Ye Zi. Ye Zi, upon hearing the truth, held his hand firmly and declared that even if it was a nightmare, they would confront it and bear the burden together from that moment forward.
Early that morning, Zhu Xuan prepared breakfast for Yuan Lang, serving him with unusual eagerness. She playfully pressed him for details about a surprise he had promised. Yuan Lang, however, remained resolute, praising her "Michelin three-star" cooking but playfully refusing to divulge any information about the surprise, despite Zhu Xuan's teasing threats to "kill herself" if he didn't tell her. He then quickly left for work, reminding her to drink her milk.
Xiang Zeyi and Ye Zi had rekindled their romance, often exchanging sweet text messages that made them feel as if they were back in their college dating days. One afternoon, Xiang Zeyi visited Ye Zi's studio. Ye Zi was out for a meeting, so Xiang Zeyi decided to wait for her. Instead of Ye Zi, he was met by Ye Zi's mother, who had come to bring her lunch.
Unaware of his identity beyond being a friend, Ye Zi’s mother voiced her concerns about Ye Zi's marital prospects, lamenting that her thirty-year-old daughter was still unwed and secretive, much like her childhood self. She then shifted the conversation to Ye Zi's college boyfriend, asking if Xiang Zeyi knew him. Without revealing himself, Xiang Zeyi confirmed he knew him, describing him as a tall, handsome, talented, and reliable friend he had grown up with.
Ye Zi’s mother, however, steered the conversation to Lin Sen, praising him as the most suitable son-in-law candidate, highlighting his reliability. Xiang Zeyi attempted to advocate for his friend again, but Ye Zi’s mother eventually concluded that such discussions were futile, as the decision ultimately rested with Ye Zi. She then asked for his name, to which he replied, "Xiang."
Ye Zi’s mother picked up a newspaper from the table and began to read an article about a sixteen-year-old boy sentenced for assault after a fight over a cigarette. As she read, Xiang Zeyi became deeply affected, tears welling in his eyes as he silently reflected on his own past. After finishing, Ye Zi's mother remarked that everyone makes mistakes and deserves a chance to reform, especially the young. She then thanked "Xiang" for the pleasant conversation.
Internally, Xiang Zeyi felt he was no longer as strong as he once was. Later, Ye Zi spoke with Zhu Xuan on the phone. Zhu Xuan excitedly shared Liu Xinran and Zhang Daniao's plans to travel to America for an e-sports game and to get married during their journey, suggesting a gathering for their friends. Zhu Xuan then pressed Ye Zi for updates on her relationship with Xiang Zeyi.
Ye Zi, however, playfully dismissed her as a "gossip girl" and ended the call without revealing any details. Cheng Xi went to the airport with Wu Kai to pick up her parents, who had returned from abroad. Her parents initially commended Wu Kai, mistaking him for her helpful colleague, impressed by his willingness to carry their luggage. However, when Cheng Xi introduced him as her boyfriend, their enthusiasm quickly waned.
They claimed to be tired and postponed further discussion until they arrived home. Once there, they tried to persuade Cheng Xi against dating Wu Kai, arguing that he was too young and not mature or reliable enough to care for her. They expressed their desire for her to find a "real man" who would look after her, rather than someone she had to care for.
Cheng Xi, displeased by their remarks, brushed off their concerns, stating she had plans and Wu Kai was waiting for her, before leaving. Zhang Daniao proudly boasted about his recent e-sports achievements to Xiang Zeyi, claiming he could excel even in gaming. He then urged Xiang Zeyi to act quickly regarding Ye Zi, warning that Lin Sen hadn't given up on her.
He suggested that Xiang Zeyi pick up Ye Zi after her girls' night out, hoping the romantic setting would inspire him to confess his feelings. That evening, Ye Zi, Zhu Xuan, Liu Xinran, and Cheng Xi gathered for their girls' night out. Liu Xinran excitedly shared that she and Zhang Daniao were departing for Hawaii soon, the first stop on their journey that would culminate in their wedding and an e-sports competition.
Cheng Xi arrived late, explaining that her parents' recent return from Argentina after a decade had disrupted her independent rhythm, making her feel uneasy. She described how she was used to her own routines, but her parents' care, while attentive, felt overwhelming and forced her to change her habits.
Zhu Xuan and Ye Zi encouraged her to embrace the rare opportunity for family bonding, reminding her that her parents were likely adjusting too and that their expressions of love were precious. As the gathering concluded, Liu Xinran left with Zhang Daniao, and Zhu Xuan departed, leaving Ye Zi to walk home alone. As Ye Zi walked, Xiang Zeyi appeared, offering to escort her home. He hadn't driven, suggesting they walk together since her home was nearby.
Ye Zi mentioned that she usually enjoyed the quiet solitude of her walks after gatherings, finding it a good way to clear her thoughts, but admitted that having company felt nice too. She asked if he was familiar with the route. Xiang Zeyi confessed that he had walked that very road many times, not alone, but secretly following her.
He recounted how he had often watched her from afar—seeing her stumble drunk near a garbage can only to pick herself up, witnessing her moments of pure joy, and observing her standing contemplatively by the trash bin for long periods. Yet, despite knowing her struggles and her strength, he had never dared to step out and greet her. He expressed his regret at not having had the courage to say "Long time no see" or simply "Good night."
When she shivered, he removed his jacket and wrapped it around her. He then conveyed his deep realization that the years they had lost could not be mended by mere greetings. He told Ye Zi that he wanted to give her a long-overdue promise: he wanted to make her happy, and he asked her to have faith in him.
Episode 19 Recap
Xiang Zeyi lay awake in bed, unable to sleep. He eventually rose and looked at the old drawings he had made for Ye Zi. Meanwhile, Lin Sen was practicing sword fighting with Yuan Lang, but his mind was elsewhere. Yuan Lang noticed his distraction and asked what was troubling him. Lin Sen decided to end their practice, explaining that he needed to pick up a friend he had never met before. He then rushed off, leaving Yuan Lang behind.
Lin Sen was meeting Chen Yiman, his blind date. They introduced themselves and then went shopping. Lin Sen ended up carrying her many purchases. Afterward, they found a place to sit and talk. Chen Yiman suggested they take it easy and hoped they could get to know each other. Lin Sen mentioned his enjoyment of symphonies, and Chen Yiman shared her liking for Bach.
Xiang Zeyi and Ye Zi were having dinner, but Xiang Zeyi was constantly occupied with work calls and messages. He apologized for his lateness and explained that Mr. Shao had put him in charge of an important new project with high demands from their overseas partners. He warned Ye Zi that he would be even busier in the coming days and wouldn't have much time for her, promising to make it up to her later.
Ye Zi was understanding, acknowledging it was a critical period for him, and even mentioned that Mr. Shao had already told her about his heavy workload. Despite her supportive words, and her attempts to feed him, Xiang Zeyi’s continued preoccupation with work left her feeling a subtle sadness. Later, Lin Sen, having skipped meals during his date, went to Yuan Lang's house.
Yuan Lang, whose wife was working overtime, offered to cook for him, demanding details about the blind date in return. Yuan Lang was quite shocked by the news and pressed Lin Sen for more information, though Lin Sen, still claiming to be hungry, was evasive. Yuan Lang explained that his inquiries came from a place of concern, as his wife had taught him. Yuan Lang revealed that Lin Sen's date was a doctor known through family.
Yuan Lang then shared the news with Zhu Xuan, who was equally keen for gossip. While they were talking, Zhu Xuan spotted Cheng Xi and Wu Kai together on a date. She immediately confronted Cheng Xi, teasing her about her secret relationship. Cheng Xi admitted she had been struggling with how to tell Ye Zi and Liu Xinran and asked Zhu Xuan to spread the news for her.
Zhu Xuan readily agreed, proclaiming that once she knew, the whole world would know. Yuan Lang then suggested they leave Cheng Xi and Wu Kai to their date, and the two friends departed. Zhu Xuan and Yuan Lang later met with Lin Sen again. Zhu Xuan continued to playfully interrogate Lin Sen about his blind date, and Lin Sen confirmed that the woman was tall and attractive, and he was considering the relationship.
Zhu Xuan and Yuan Lang offered their congratulations, with Zhu Xuan wishing him a blessing and hinting at a celebratory dinner. Zhu Xuan then expressed her happiness that Lin Sen, like herself, Yuan Lang, and Cheng Xi, was settling down. Her thoughts turned to Ye Zi, the only one remaining, and she voiced concern about Ye Zi’s unhappiness, noting Xiang Zeyi's constant overtime due to an overseas project.
Lin Sen reminded Zhu Xuan that he and Ye Zi were just friends, and he didn't know what he could do, but Zhu Xuan clarified that her worry stemmed from deep friendship, wishing for Ye Zi’s happiness. Reflecting on love, Zhu Xuan shared her belief that it involves more than just destiny, citing her own journey with Yuan Lang, and wished Lin Sen a girlfriend soon. Xiang Zeyi continued working late into the night.
Mr. Shao found him at the office and questioned why he was still there. Xiang Zeyi explained he needed to make thorough preparations for the upcoming collaboration with an overseas team. Mr. Shao reminded him that as a genius, he had never needed to work so hard before. Xiang Zeyi replied that he was getting older and felt the need to push himself more.
Mr. Shao, however, urged him not to overwork himself and to go home earlier, to which Xiang Zeyi simply said he understood. That night, Ye Zi suffered an acute gastroenteritis attack. She tried to call Xiang Zeyi, but his phone was unreachable. In distress, she called Lin Sen, who immediately rushed to her apartment. He found her in severe pain and quickly took her to the emergency room. A doctor informed Lin Sen that Ye Zi had acute gastroenteritis.
Lin Sen, still worried, tried calling Xiang Zeyi again, but his calls went unanswered. The next day, Lin Sen took Ye Zi back home, helped her rest on the sofa, and went to cook noodles for her. Ye Zi soon drifted off to sleep. Xiang Zeyi, finally finished with his work, called Ye Zi back, but it was Lin Sen who answered.
Lin Sen, clearly upset, questioned Xiang Zeyi about his late call and his absence when Ye Zi needed him most. Xiang Zeyi, worried, asked about Ye Zi's condition. Lin Sen simply told him she was home and then abruptly hung up. Xiang Zeyi rushed to Ye Zi's apartment. Finding Ye Zi asleep, Lin Sen led Xiang Zeyi outside so they could talk without disturbing her.
Outside, Lin Sen confronted Xiang Zeyi, criticizing him for not being there for Ye Zi and calling him a "bad egg." He spoke of his many years of love for Ye Zi, recalling how carefree she was before choosing Xiang Zeyi. He accused Xiang Zeyi of bringing her only pain and of being absent during her moments of need.
Lin Sen declared that if Ye Zi were truly happy with her chosen man, he would not interfere, as he had done in the past. However, he now saw Xiang Zeyi as selfish, preoccupied with his own suffering while ignoring Ye Zi's struggles. Lin Sen then revealed a ring he had prepared long ago, stating he would never abandon Ye Zi or leave her alone when she needed companionship. He firmly declared that this time, he would not give up.
Xiang Zeyi quietly returned to the apartment. Ye Zi had just woken up and was eating the noodles Lin Sen had prepared. Xiang Zeyi asked if she felt better and apologized for being late. Before they could truly talk, Xiang Zeyi's phone rang again. He answered it, discussing preparations for an overseas team with Mr. Shao. Later, he received another call, reiterating his busy schedule with an emergency project and promising to eat and finish work later.
Ye Zi watched him, a quiet sadness in her eyes, silently acknowledging his overwhelming workload despite her own disappointment. Still agitated by Lin Sen's words, Xiang Zeyi found himself lost in thought with the "Old Weirdo." The Old Weirdo probed his feelings, asking if it was acceptable to lie. Xiang Zeyi responded evasively, stating they were different and he had nothing to ponder as he was alone, dismissing the Old Weirdo’s implication.
The Old Weirdo pressed on, asserting that Xiang Zeyi knew his true feelings but often refused to admit them, choosing to escape his "shadow" instead. He suggested that Xiang Zeyi believed he needed to work exponentially harder than others to achieve his goals, but this very intensity sometimes made things harder to attain, especially concerning his relationship with Ye Zi. Xiang Zeyi reacted angrily, telling the Old Weirdo to stop and expressing his frustration at feeling constantly "read." He later apologized for his outburst. The Old Weirdo, without a word, simply patted Xiang Zeyi on the shoulder and walked away.
Episode 20 Recap
After Xiang Zeyi was released from prison, he often walked with his head down, dressed in black and wearing a hat. One evening, he saw a young girl wearing headphones, oblivious to a car honking behind her. Xiang Zeyi rushed forward and pulled her to safety, but she quickly left without a word of thanks, seemingly perceiving him as a threat.
In the present, Xiang Zeyi is doing much better professionally, leading large projects and conducting meetings for many people, yet the shadows of his past continue to haunt him. Mr. Shao, Xiang Zeyi's boss, noticed his excessive late nights at work. He expressed concern, telling Xiang Zeyi, "You have stayed up for a few nights, right? You can't continue in this way." Xiang Zeyi insisted he could manage, saying, "I'm still young.
I can make it," and that he had a lot of work. Mr. Shao advised him to prioritize his health, reminding him that "Work isn't the only thing." Despite Xiang Zeyi's reluctance to take a break, Mr. Shao insisted he take two days off, making it a "deal." Concerned about the distance growing between Xiang Zeyi and Ye Zi, Zhang Daniao called Xiang Zeyi.
He playfully chided Xiang Zeyi for finally answering his call and informed him that he and Liu Xinran were hosting a farewell party before their wedding trip. He urged Xiang Zeyi to come, noting, "You haven't seen Ye Zi for a long time. Ye Zi will come here tomorrow." Xiang Zeyi tried to decline due to work, but Zhang Daniao was persistent, ensuring he would attend.
Later, Ye Zi was also busy at work, needing to finish covers and modifications, and stayed late while Yuan Lang waited for her at home. That night, after a long workday, Xiang Zeyi called his mother, assuring her he would take her home soon and to take care of herself before saying good night. He later sent a belated "Good night" message to Ye Zi, explaining, "Sorry, I worked too late last night. Good night, though it's a bit late."
Wukai excitedly shared his good news with Zhu Xuan: after two years of failed attempts, he had been admitted to the Art School in Paris, a dream come true for him. Zhu Xuan congratulated him, but her joy turned to concern when Wukai mentioned he would be leaving "recently" for just one year and hadn't yet told Cheng Xi.
Zhu Xuan cautioned him, "Xixi [Cheng Xi] hates long-distance relationship," and advised him to discuss it with Cheng Xi before making a decision. Wukai, however, was confident Cheng Xi would understand, believing it was for their future. He asked Zhu Xuan for her support, which she gave, wishing him success in his studies. He also expressed gratitude to Zhu Xuan and Ye Zi for their kindness during his two years of work.
Feeling troubled, Xiang Zeyi frequently sought out the old eccentric for drinks and conversation. They played a coin-tossing game, with Xiang Zeyi consistently winning, much to the old eccentric's chagrin. Xiang Zeyi inquired if the old eccentric had ever been in a relationship, to which he revealed a past connection with a married woman he met at her husband's car accident site. Although her husband had passed away, their relationship still had no outcome.
He described relationships as "really troublesome," bringing pain whether one gets what they want or not, and easily disappearing. The farewell party for Zhang Daniao and Liu Xinran brought all their friends together. Liu Xinran and Zhang Daniao exchanged playful banter, with Liu Xinran joking about not missing Zhang Daniao's "unpleasant smell" and Zhang Daniao teasing her that no one would quarrel with her on their trip. Zhu Xuan, Yuan Lang, Cheng Xi, and Wukai were among the guests.
Ye Zi arrived, and shortly after, Xiang Zeyi made his appearance. As everyone prepared to see them off, Zhang Daniao cleverly declared his car was too small for everyone, creating an opportunity for Xiang Zeyi and Ye Zi to be alone. Walking down the street, Xiang Zeyi broke the silence, apologizing to Ye Zi for being too busy and neglecting her feelings.
Ye Zi, understanding, told him, "I will punish you," and playfully decreed that he must "Say good night to me every day." She then suggested they get some delicious food. Meanwhile, Yuan Lang surprised Zhu Xuan at home. She was watching TV and laughing when he arrived. He showed her a flight booking to Italy, purchased for 7809 yuan.
Zhu Xuan was initially perplexed, wondering if he was going on a business trip or if something was wrong, like an illness, because he was suddenly being romantic after being so busy. Yuan Lang explained he wanted to make up for his past lack of romance and promised to make up for "all romantic things" from then on. Zhu Xuan admitted she felt "complicated" by the suddenness of it all but ultimately seemed pleased.
That night, after they had both gone to bed, Yuan Lang felt unwell and secretly went to the kitchen to take some medicine. When Zhu Xuan woke up and asked where he had gone, he simply replied he went to the bathroom, then lay down and held her close. At a crucial meeting, Mr. Shao introduced Xiang Zeyi, using his alias Xiang Hui, as their chief director to Mr. Jingshang, the director of the overseas project.
Mr. Jingshang, however, immediately questioned Xiang Zeyi's identity, stating, "Xiang Hui isn't your real name." He then directly addressed "Mr. Xiang" about "gossips" he had heard, specifically mentioning "plagiarizing." Mr. Jingshang expressed his hope for a smooth collaboration but underscored that their company's techniques were "very well protected." He then requested that Mr. Shao "think of a new chief director," indicating they would only proceed with further cooperation after receiving a "satisfactory reply."
Xiang Zeyi was deeply affected by this, knowing that some stains would follow him forever, despite his innocence. Mr. Shao tried to comfort him, promising to handle the situation and telling him not to worry. He reminded Xiang Zeyi that he was once "the most handsome boy in our school" and shared his own experience in business, where compromise is often necessary.
Mr. Shao recounted how he, an "ordinary art student," was once told he wasn't gifted but persevered when others quit, assuring Xiang Zeyi that he, too, would not give up easily. He offered to buy Xiang Zeyi a drink after work to lift his spirits. Later, Lin Sen encountered Yuan Lang at the neurosurgery department of a hospital. Yuan Lang claimed he was accompanying a friend for something.
Lin Sen found it odd for a medical examiner to be in neurosurgery, calling it "classified work." They sat to talk, and Yuan Lang, prompted by seeing a patient, began to reflect on life and death. He recounted his first case as a medical examiner, involving a couple who committed suicide by self-immolation due to the wife's terminal cancer, and another case of a car accident victim who desperately clung to life for his family.
Yuan Lang shared his realization: "we are not afraid of death, but afraid of leaving our beloved people behind." He mused that people often take their loved ones for granted, knowing they won't leave, but then wondered, "if one day, there are some distances between us, we will feel really scared." He then directly asked Lin Sen, "What if one day, I'm not around her, what should I do?"
Lin Sen found him "a bit strange," but Yuan Lang dismissed it as merely "grumbling" due to his day's work and seeing patients. Yuan Lang then excused himself, saying his friend was done, and left, suggesting they chat next time. That night, Xiang Zeyi arrived at Ye Zi's apartment, smelling of alcohol. He apologized for being too busy lately and forgetting to say goodbye. Ye Zi, saying, "Never mind," offered to make him food, but he insisted on helping her.
He tried to clear the already set table, but Ye Zi gently stopped him, assuring him, "I can take care of myself." Xiang Zeyi broke down, crying, saying, "I meant to do something or say something to make you happy, but I found that I could do nothing except saying sorry." He confessed that he thought about her every day during his disappearance but was "scared" to tell her, feeling "really lucky to meet you again."
He expressed his deep longing to be the "Xiang Zeyi in your mind" again and to "get back," but acknowledged it was "harder than I have thought." He admitted to pretending to be strong, but every time he encountered people he used to know, he instinctively lowered his hat, because "their eyes and words" made him scared and shattered his pretense of strength. Yet, he affirmed, "But I didn't give up. I believed that if I persevered, everything will be OK."
Episode 21 Recap
Ye Zi visited Editor Yu to delve into the truth behind Xiang Zeyi's comic book, which had been originally attributed to him but eventually credited to Gu Yishan. Editor Yu confirmed her press’s involvement in its publication and recalled that Gu Yishan was the nephew of their former chief editor. She also mentioned that a student from the School of Fine Art had accidentally injured Gu Yishan, leading to the student's imprisonment.
Ye Zi identified this student as Xiang Zeyi, highlighting his significance to her. While Editor Yu acknowledged Xiang Zeyi's distinct and impressive artistic style, she noted that Gu Yishan was the one who submitted the finalized animations. When Ye Zi pressed for more details, Editor Yu regretfully explained that too much time had passed, Gu Yishan remained in a coma, and Sanzhou Press had ceased operations, leaving her unable to assist further.
Meanwhile, Zhu Xuan, Liu Xinran, and Cheng Xi had also been discussing Xiang Zeyi’s past. They learned that the former chief editor of Sanzhou Press was Gu Yishan's uncle, leading them to suspect Editor Yu might possess more information about Xiang Zeyi's stolen animations. Later, they discovered that Xiang Zeyi had already confided everything in Ye Zi.
Zhang Daniao had revealed that Xiang Zeyi was unjustly accused of plagiarism, and during an attempt to clear his name, a fight broke out. Xiang Zeyi had merely acted in self-defense, pushing someone, and it was simply an unfortunate incident, not his fault. Despite his innocence, he served time in jail. The group expressed concern about how others would perceive him, but Zhu Xuan maintained that Ye Zi was capable of navigating the situation.
Gu Yishan's condition took a sudden critical turn, necessitating emergency surgery. His uncle and Xu Wenjie waited anxiously. Post-operation, the doctor delivered news of a miracle: a shift in the brain's congestion, though initially dangerous, had unexpectedly created an opportunity for a cure. Gu Yishan was expected to regain consciousness after the anesthetic wore off. Both his uncle and Xu Wenjie were ecstatic. Xu Wenjie promptly contacted Xiang Zeyi, relaying the positive update and instructing him to inform Ye Zi.
Xiang Zeyi soon arrived at the hospital, quietly observing Gu Yishan through the observation window. Ye Zi's mother called Lin Sen, inviting him for dinner, but he corrected her, recalling she had initially suggested the day after tomorrow. Lin Sen later called her back, insisting on taking her for a family physical examination at the hospital the next morning, emphasizing his hospital connections. Despite her initial reluctance, she agreed.
The following day, after she underwent numerous blood tests and a CT scan, Lin Sen informed her that the results would take a few days, reassuring her there was nothing serious. Worried about her age and not wanting to burden Ye Zi, she specifically asked Lin Sen not to share any potentially serious news with her daughter, to which he agreed.
That evening, Lin Sen, having just finished an operation, visited Ye Zi, bringing a birthday gift from his father, a tradition he noted. Sensing his unusual demeanor, Ye Zi asked if something was bothering him. Lin Sen opened up, sharing his thoughts about his own father's struggles abroad, always conveying only good news to spare his son worry.
He mused that parents often strive to be supermen for their children, forgetting their own aging, and that children, accustomed to receiving care, sometimes forget to reciprocate. Lin Sen attributed his introspective mood to a hospital incident combined with the sentiment of his father's gift. He advised Ye Zi not to worry excessively about her parents, who were capable of caring for themselves, but encouraged her to visit them more frequently.
As he departed, citing preparations for a challenging case, he reiterated the importance of dedicating more time to her aging parents. Moved by Lin Sen’s words, Ye Zi immediately returned to her parents' home. Her mother was delighted to see her, warmly embracing her and offering to warm up her favorite pork ribs soup, which Ye Zi joyfully accepted.
That same evening, while Zhu Xuan and Yuan Lang were having dinner at home, Zhu Xuan suddenly felt nauseous and rushed to the bathroom to vomit. Yuan Lang, alarmed, quickly checked on her, offering her a glass of water. After vomiting for a while, Zhu Xuan felt much better and didn't give it much thought. Later that night, Xiang Zeyi was chatting with Old Guai, who expressed frustration at feeling like fate was toying with him.
Xiang Zeyi advised him to focus on his true desires and what he could control. Soon after, Ye Zi's father called, arranging a meeting at the park the next morning. Xiang Zeyi met him as planned, and Ye Zi’s father reminisced about walking with a young Ye Zi in the park. He acknowledged Ye Zi's busy schedule but believed she still thought of Xiang Zeyi.
He described Ye Zi as outwardly strong but possessing a soft heart, like her mother, always presenting a brave face and never her weaknesses. Asserting his deeper understanding of his daughter, he explained his desire to see if both he and Xiang Zeyi, as the two men who knew Ye Zi best, shared similar thoughts about her future.
He noted his own aging, struggling to walk where he once ran, and Xiang Zeyi urged him to take care of his heart condition. Ye Zi’s father then brought up Ye Zi working on her old animations with Xiang Zeyi, which Xiang Zeyi was recomposing. He expressed his and his wife’s wish for Ye Zi to find a good man as they grew older, and directly questioned Xiang Zeyi's intentions with her.
Xiang Zeyi assured him of his understanding and shared his desire for Ye Zi’s happiness, stating he was striving to give her the life she wanted. Ye Zi’s father then challenged him, asking if he truly understood what kind of life Ye Zi wanted. He emphasized that every woman fundamentally seeks companionship, and that while young people might prioritize material comfort, it is the character of the partner, the "driver," that truly matters.
He concluded by asserting that Ye Zi needed a man who truly understood her unique vision of happiness, not just one who could provide it, and that if Xiang Zeyi grasped this, their conversation would be a success. Zhu Xuan's eagerly anticipated surprise from Yuan Lang finally arrived. He had meticulously orchestrated a romantic candlelight dinner, complete with roses and enchanting lights. Asking Zhu Xuan to close her eyes, Yuan Lang then revealed the exquisite setup.
He confided that while preparing the surprise, he reflected on their home as a place where miracles unfolded. He admitted to once being a man devoid of romance, focused solely on his work, never envisioning he could marry such a perfect wife and create a sweet home. He credited Zhu Xuan with giving him a second life and new purpose. He explained his past reluctance to share the darker aspects of his work, wanting only to offer her good things.
While he sometimes felt guilty when she complained about his busy schedule, he affirmed her as the most important person in his life. Just as they were enjoying their meal, rain began to fall. Yuan Lang suggested moving indoors, but Zhu Xuan, finding the outdoor setting more romantic, insisted they stay. They simply relocated their romantic dinner to the corridor, continuing to savor the evening amidst the gentle rain.
As Cheng Xi and Wu Kai strolled under an umbrella, Wu Kai finally revealed his long-held plan to study abroad, presenting her with an acceptance letter from a school in Paris—an opportunity he had pursued for three years but had not yet formally accepted. Cheng Xi's immediate reaction was to suggest a breakup. Wu Kai, however, refused, holding her close and explaining that his ambition was to build a secure future for them.
He vowed he would stay if she asked him to, even offering to remain in the country and open his own studio. Touched by his willingness to sacrifice such a significant opportunity, Cheng Xi relented. She asked how long he would be gone, to which he replied, "one year." She then made him promise to return within that year, "not one second longer," and he readily agreed.
After Liu Xinran and Zhang Daniao returned, they hosted a gathering for their friends. Zhu Xuan playfully congratulated Liu Xinran on "finally not being single anymore." She then humorously nudged Cheng Xi and Ye Zi, remarking that only the two of them hadn't yet achieved a happy ending. The group chatted about Liu Xinran and Zhang Daniao's "traveling wedding ceremony," which they proudly declared as "our style." Lighthearted banter ensued between Zhu Xuan and Yuan Lang regarding a past game.
Liu Xinran then presented gifts to everyone, drawing their eager attention. Meanwhile, Zhang Daniao pulled Xiang Zeyi aside, asking if his own marriage had given Xiang Zeyi any thoughts about taking the "next step" with Ye Zi. Zhang Daniao shared his personal transformation, confessing he once viewed marriage as imprisonment but now found it to be "heaven." He remarked he never thought he would marry before Xiang Zeyi.
He emphasized that marriage fosters maturity in a man, and that being with Liu Xinran, who appears strong but needs support, had taught him much about providing a "strong shoulder" for his partner. Xiang Zeyi, pondering Zhang Daniao's words, reflected on the meaning of happiness. He concluded that before Ye Zi, the question was unanswerable, but since meeting her, his happiness had become simple and pure.
He affirmed his desire for "a home, a home that belongs to the two of us," yet still harbored internal hesitation due to past events, feeling he carried a persistent blemish. Sitting on his sofa, Lin Sen's thoughts drifted to his childhood with Ye Zi. He recalled promising her that he would use his earnings to publish her comics and organize art exhibitions when they grew up, a promise he had painstakingly fulfilled.
He remembered his own childhood ambition to become a doctor, driven by a desire to care for those he cherished. True to his protective nature, a flashback showed him diligently caring for Ye Zi during her menstrual period, providing her with brown sugar, ginger tea, warm pads, and painkillers, cautioning her to use the latter only as a last resort. Unbeknownst to Ye Zi, Lin Sen was the silent force behind many of her successes.
He was the one who first presented her artwork to Editor Yu, waiting outside Sanzhou Press to show her Ye Zi's talented pieces, leading to Editor Yu’s promise to contact her. Lin Sen also personally oversaw the setup of Ye Zi's art exhibition, managing every detail, and even helped establish her studio, selecting plants and directing workers. Zhu Xuan, witnessing his unwavering efforts, acknowledged him as an "anonymous hero" for all he had done for Ye Zi without her knowledge.
Lin Sen, however, downplayed his contributions, stating he had "been used to it since I was a kid," prompting Zhu Xuan to remark that he was "stubborn like Yezi." After regaining consciousness, Gu Yishan was visited by Editor Yu and others, accompanied by his uncle. Ignoring his uncle's prompt to greet his guests, Gu Yishan immediately criticized Editor Yu for bringing "little things" to visit a patient.
He brazenly implied that she owed her current position as chief editor to "my animations," suggesting she had forgotten her origins. Xu Wenjie intervened, directly challenging Gu Yishan, asking if the animations were truly his. Gu Yishan, however, adamantly insisted they were, claiming he had painted them all and asking if they couldn't see his name. Despite his uncle's attempts to calm the situation, Editor Yu pressed him further about the true story behind the animation.
Infuriated, Gu Yishan accused her of suspicion, demanding to know who else they thought could have painted it besides him. He scoffed at the idea of Xiang Zeyi being the artist, disdainfully referring to him as merely "an offender under labor reform" who was never a good art student. Overwhelmed, Gu Yishan then complained to his uncle about a headache and feeling wronged, claiming no one believed he was the true painter. His uncle tried to console him. Editor Yu and Xu Wenjie, unable to tolerate his blatant lies and insolence, departed the ward.
Episode 22 Recap
Mr Gu Huai, Gu Yishan's uncle and the director of Sanzhou Press, accompanied Gu Yishan to Mr. Shao's company to discuss a collaboration. Mr. Shao stated that Gu Yishan's work made him see hope for Chinese comics and proposed adapting it into an animated feature. Gu Yishan, with an arrogant demeanor, immediately pressed to discuss profit distribution, which Mr. Shao agreed to.
However, Mr Gu Huai then questioned Mr. Shao about having hired Xiang Zeyi, whom they believed had copied Gu Yishan's work. Mr. Shao falsely claimed that Xiang Zeyi had been fired a long time ago for jeopardizing a cooperation with an overseas team. Meanwhile, Xiang Zeyi arrived at the company and, seeing Gu Yishan and others, wondered why they were there. He approached Mr. Shao's office and overheard the conversation, specifically hearing that he had been fired.
Enraged and without a second thought, Xiang Zeyi stormed into Mr. Shao's office, grabbing his collar and demanding an explanation. Mr. Shao stated he had tolerated Xiang Zeyi enough, claiming Xiang Zeyi had messed up a big project, and that he had found a "better choice." Feeling betrayed, Xiang Zeyi slammed the door and left. Back home, Ye Zi joined Xiang Zeyi after hearing the news.
Overwhelmed by anger and despair, Xiang Zeyi kicked over his easel amidst a room full of drafts. Ye Zi tried to calm him, suggesting Mr. Shao might have other reasons, but Xiang Zeyi was inconsolable. He lashed out, lamenting that he had studied painting for so many years only for everything to be ruined by Gu Yishan and Mr. Shao's betrayal. He felt like a loser, unable to escape his "nightmare."
Ye Zi reassured him that he was not a loser and that she believed in him, but Xiang Zeyi only wanted to be left alone, repeatedly shouting that Gu Yishan had ruined him. Later, Editor Yu, after a long search, found Xiang Zeyi's original submission drafts. At the contract signing ceremony between Mr. Shao and Gu Yishan, Mr Jinshang was also present.
Mr Gu Huai was eager to begin, but Mr. Shao announced a slight change, insisting they wait for a guest he had invited. Mr Gu Huai protested, calling it rude, but Mr. Shao assured him the guest would be helpful. Soon, Ye Zi, Xiang Zeyi, Xu Wenjie, and Editor Yu arrived. Gu Yishan immediately confronted Xiang Zeyi, but Ye Zi kept Xiang Zeyi calm as the group prepared to expose Gu Yishan's plagiarism.
Editor Yu presented Xiang Zeyi's drafts alongside Gu Yishan's upcoming comics for comparison. Gu Yishan, still unyielding, accused Xiang Zeyi of imitating his style and being a thief. Xu Wenjie, infuriated, shamed Gu Yishan for his refusal to admit his wrongdoing and challenged him to draw something on the spot if he was truly the original artist. Gu Yishan made excuses, claiming his hands were ruined by Xiang Zeyi and he could no longer draw.
Editor Yu then revealed they had another witness: Mr. Shao. Mr. Shao stepped forward, explaining that while drawing styles can be imitated, each person's perception of color is unique. He challenged Gu Yishan to articulate the prominent features of his comic series, but Gu Yishan could only vaguely state that his work was "very nice." Realizing he had been deceived for years, Mr Gu Huai angrily confronted Gu Yishan before leaving the meeting, followed closely by Gu Yishan.
After the revelation, Xiang Zeyi asked Ye Zi and Xu Wenjie to leave first, as he had matters to attend to. Mr Jinshang approached Xiang Zeyi and apologized for his previous actions, expressing his belief that they could continue their cooperation. Xiang Zeyi, having reflected on his journey and the hardships, accepted the apology.
He spoke passionately about his love for painting and how the recent experiences, though painful, had made him more resilient and persistent, helping him find what he truly wanted. He confronted Mr Jinshang for having dismissed his team due to his personal mistake, emphasizing that everyone who takes life and work seriously deserves respect, and requested mutual respect in their future collaborations.
Mr Jinshang, impressed by Xiang Zeyi's courage and talent, readily agreed to continue their partnership based on mutual understanding and respect. Xiang Zeyi then thanked Mr. Shao for helping to clear his name. Walking by the river, Ye Zi and Xu Wenjie finally reconciled. Xu Wenjie admitted that she had figured out that she owed both Ye Zi and Xiang Zeyi too much and would no longer bother them, hoping to marry, have children, and start a new life.
She then urged Ye Zi to make a decision about her relationship with Xiang Zeyi, adding, with a sense of closure, that she no longer liked Xiang Zeyi, effectively moving on. Ye Zi reflected on their shared experience of loving the same man for so many years. Meanwhile, Lin Sen arranged for Ye Zi's mother to undergo medical examinations after noticing her memory lapses.
He then informed Ye Zi's father that her mother had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease, or dementia. Ye Zi's father was deeply worried, fearing his wife would eventually forget them, but vowed to take good care of her. Lin Sen also broke the news to Ye Zi, who became distraught.
She rushed home with Lin Sen, where her mother, unaware of her diagnosis, chatted aimlessly, reiterating her desire for Ye Zi to find a reliable husband like Lin Sen for happiness, and expressing worries about Ye Zi being alone when her parents eventually leave her. Overcome with emotion and sorrow, Ye Zi embraced her mother tightly. In a lighter moment, Zhu Xuan and Yuan Lang were relaxing at home.
Zhu Xuan subtly probed Yuan Lang about his feelings on having children, asking if he would be bothered if their child was demanding. Yuan Lang surprised her by enthusiastically stating his love for kids. Zhu Xuan then admitted she had been mistaken, thinking he didn't want children due to her own career development, and confessed that she was pregnant. Yuan Lang was overjoyed and touched Zhu Xuan's belly in disbelief.
Later, Ye Zi asked Xiang Zeyi to meet her for a walk. She confessed that she had been thinking a lot, especially after her mother's illness, and felt they were no longer young and couldn't continue their relationship as they did in college. She admitted feeling confused and pressured, and struggled to imagine their future. Xiang Zeyi tried to reassure her, telling her not to overthink things and that everything would be alright.
Ye Zi then revealed her deep worry that her mother was already starting to forget who she was, which left her feeling even more upset. Xiang Zeyi understood that Ye Zi needed time to sort through her emotions and did not press her further.
Episode 23 Recap
Ye Zi sought solace at a bar she frequented during college. The owner noticed Ye Zi's troubled expression and asked why she was there and where her boyfriend was, observing that something was clearly amiss between them. Ye Zi admitted she didn't understand it either. The owner then posed a question to Ye Zi: if she loved someone, would she marry him? This prompted the owner to share her own story.
She revealed that the bar was purchased with money her deceased husband earned from working three jobs and his car accident insurance payout, combined with her own savings over the years. Her husband had promised to open a bar for her, and though it now existed, he would never see it. She described their life as poor and difficult, with daily arguments and fights, often because he would come home drunk. She confessed she hated him but couldn't leave him.
It was only after he passed away that she realized he was her entire world. The owner reflected that it always hurts, whether one marries or not, because people wish things could remain as they were. She noted that while people expect their loved ones to never change, often it is they themselves who have changed. Deep in thought, Ye Zi sent a message to Xiang Zeyi, explaining she felt overwhelmed and needed some time apart to calm down.
Meanwhile, Xiang Zeyi was at the gym, his mind preoccupied with Ye Zi's message about needing space. He soon received a call from Zhang Daniao, who was upset to hear about his breakup with Ye Zi. Zhang Daniao sternly questioned Xiang Zeyi's actions, reminding him that Ye Zi needed his support and company. Xiang Zeyi, however, hung up the phone, acknowledging to himself that there were deeper issues between him and Ye Zi that were difficult to resolve.
Lin Sen met with Chen Yiman, his arranged fiancée, to confess his true feelings. He told her that he loved someone else and, despite his attempts to forget her and start anew, he couldn't deceive himself. He apologized and informed Chen Yiman that he would ask his father to cancel their engagement, hoping she would understand. To his surprise, Chen Yiman smiled, relieved that she could finally stop pretending to be a "good girl."
She revealed that she had returned home at her father's insistence but her real intention was to find her boyfriend and discreetly ruin the engagement. Chen Yiman shared her story of a tough childhood after her parents' divorce and how she met her boyfriend while skipping school. She also expressed her dislike for formal attire and symphonies, suspecting Lin Sen felt the same.
Feeling a sense of ease, Lin Sen then asked her about the girl he loved, describing her as nothing special, yet uniquely special to him. Later, while unpacking groceries with Liu Xinran, Zhang Daniao grew suspicious when she repeatedly checked her phone and smiled. He playfully complained about carrying all the heavy bags, and she promised to put things away if he cooked her stewed pork chops.
When he asked who she was texting, she vaguely replied, "A friend of mine," further fueling his suspicion. Still uneasy, Zhang Daniao secretly followed Liu Xinran to a restaurant, where he saw her talking and laughing with a man. Believing she was having an affair, he rushed over, angrily demanding to know who the man was. Liu Xinran tried to introduce him, but Zhang Daniao, overcome with anger, accused her of betraying him.
The man, Mr. Jiang, intervened, explaining that there was a misunderstanding. He clarified that Liu Xinran was seeking investment for her sculpture studio through a crowdfunding website, and he was simply an investor in her project. Realizing his mistake, Zhang Daniao apologized profusely. Liu Xinran explained that she hadn't told him earlier because she knew starting a studio at their age was risky, and she wanted to take that risk herself.
Zhang Daniao, regretting his outburst, affirmed his unwavering support for her dreams, reminding her of his promise to be her "shooting star." They then reconciled and decided to have lunch together. Meanwhile, Yuan Lang had been troubled by persistent headaches. One night, while Zhu Xuan was asleep, he secretly got up and looked through old keepsakes from their relationship, filled with deep nostalgia. He was reluctant to leave this world and Zhu Xuan, but felt powerless against fate.
Shortly after, he received a devastating call from Renai Hospital. They informed him that the shadow on his brain was likely a malignant tumor and urged him to seek treatment immediately. In a follow-up conversation with a doctor, Yuan Lang learned he had only three months to live at most.
Unable to bear telling Zhu Xuan the grim news, he covertly prepared for his departure, leaving behind labeled bank cards and instructions for her, such as remembering to walk and drink yogurt within three days. He then recorded a video message for his family and friends. He began by saying he was glad to live one more day and acknowledged his difficulty in expressing himself, which often frustrated Zhu Xuan.
He told them that by the time they watched the video, he would be gone, explaining that he didn't mention names specifically to avoid causing them distress. He reflected on his profession as a legal examiner, where he witnessed death daily, but admitted he didn't know how to feel now that it was happening to him.
Addressing Lin Sen, he urged his best friend to stop being silent and to pursue the woman he loved, warning that no woman would want a man who didn't take action. He swore he would look down on Lin Sen even from the afterlife if he failed to win her over.
Then, in a heartfelt message to Zhu Xuan, he advised her to eat on time after he was gone and to find a better, more romantic man to marry, one who wouldn't annoy her like he sometimes did. He thanked her for bringing him happiness, saving him from becoming a "psycho," and showing him what life should be like.
He confessed his own fear of death, recalling her words that people fear death because they don't want to leave loved ones behind. He reassured her not to worry about him, promising to always watch over her and to take good care of herself. Zhu Xuan, unbeknownst to Yuan Lang, overheard his emotional recording. Struggling to suppress her cries and accept the devastating truth, she left the house. Alone on the street, she felt immense pain and loneliness.
Stumbling on some steps, she finally broke down, sitting on the roadside and weeping uncontrollably. Back at her studio, as Ye Zi was watering the plants, both Lin Sen and Xiang Zeyi arrived unexpectedly. Each held a ring, intending to propose to her. Faced with two proposals simultaneously, Ye Zi was stunned, unsure how to choose.
Episode 24 (Ending) Recap
Ye Zi's mother had forgotten many things, but she clearly remembered the time she married her father. Lin Sen, after consulting experts, explained that it was normal for her condition to cause memory confusion. Because her mother remembered the wedding so clearly, Ye Zi's father decided to hold a new wedding ceremony, hoping it would bring her joy and potentially help her memory. He asked Ye Zi to help him choose flowers, as her mother loved them best.
Ye Zi was touched by her father's dedication and promised him she would handle all the preparations, including finding a venue and decorations, to give her mother the most romantic wedding. Ye Zi later met with her friends to discuss the wedding plans, but Zhu Xuan was noticeably absent, having missed several recent gatherings.
Her friends found her behavior strange, noting that she usually had many ideas for such events, but Ye Zi urged them to focus on the wedding plans for now. Meanwhile, Xiang Zeyi had already gone to the university bar, a place he thought would be perfect, to inquire about renting it. The proprietress, a warm-hearted woman, agreed to his request. Moments later, Ye Zi arrived, also seeking to rent the same bar for her parents' wedding.
The proprietress informed Ye Zi that she had just agreed to Xiang Zeyi's request. Ye Zi was surprised and grateful that Xiang Zeyi had taken the initiative after Zhang Daniao had told him about the wedding. She confided that she and Liu Xinran had been searching for a suitable venue without success.
As Ye Zi prepared to leave, she paused and asked Xiang Zeyi if he would help her if she encountered any problems with the wedding preparations, and he readily agreed. Zhu Xuan, having tried to compose herself, returned home but broke down crying upon seeing Yuan Lang in the kitchen, heartbroken by the prospect of losing him. She embraced him tightly, pleading with him not to leave her, emphasizing that she didn't need romance or anything else, just him.
Yuan Lang was about to reveal something to her when his phone rang. It was Lin Sen, who had been analyzing Yuan Lang's medical reports. He suspected an error in his pathology results and advised Yuan Lang to undergo another examination as soon as possible. The re-examination confirmed their suspicions: the hospital had made a mistake. Yuan Lang was perfectly fine, merely suffering from a slight headache.
Zhu Xuan was immensely relieved, admitting she had been terrified for herself and their baby. Ye Zi, while happy for Zhu Xuan, scolded her for not sharing such a significant concern, but then softened and forgave her, especially given her pregnancy. Zhu Xuan, in turn, began to gossip, asking Ye Zi about her choice between Lin Sen and Xiang Zeyi, and praising Lin Sen for his steadfastness.
Ye Zi, however, deflected, stating there were no "ifs" in life and one could only try their best to be themselves. Separately, Zhang Daniao gave Liu Xinran all his savings, money he had earned from playing games over the years, to fund her sculpture studio.
He explained that he had always wanted to do something for her and now felt it was the right time to support her dream, promising to work even harder to provide her with a better life. Liu Xinran was touched and accepted his generosity, thanking him. On the day of the wedding, everyone gathered early to decorate the bar. Xiang Zeyi and Ye Zi arrived with the remaining decorations from her studio.
Lin Sen also arrived, and seeing the couple, chose to join Zhu Xuan and Zhang Daniao in the back with the balloons, silently tucking away an engagement ring, signaling his decision to step aside. Xiang Zeyi and Ye Zi handled the finishing touches in the front, discussing the decor, which Xiang Zeyi noted was definitely Ye Zi's father's style, a detail he knew from their recent conversations.
When the ceremony began, Ye Zi's father escorted her mother, who was initially shy about the crowd. He delivered a heartfelt speech, sharing a story about how couples' terms of endearment evolve through life, culminating in "old lady" or "old man" as a testament to enduring love.
He proclaimed that from the moment he first saw her, she was destined to be his wife, the mother of his children, and his "old lady," finding immense satisfaction in simply having her by his side through laughter and tears. Ye Zi and Xiang Zeyi watched, reflecting on the profound simplicity of their parents' love. Ye Zi's mother remarked on how familiar Xiang Zeyi looked, and her father subtly affirmed that he was indeed a good young man.
As Ye Zi's father considered telling Ye Zi about Xiang Zeyi's helpful suggestion for the wedding, Xiang Zeyi intervened, suggesting some things were best kept in mind. Lin Sen then approached Ye Zi and Xiang Zeyi, sincerely wishing Ye Zi happiness and hoping her aspirations would come true. After the ceremony, Ye Zi and Xiang Zeyi walked together, discussing the changes they had undergone.
Xiang Zeyi revealed he had intended to propose, showing her an engagement ring, and then recounted his first impression of Ye Zi, confident and vibrant in her studio, and admitted that even during her absence, he could never truly forget or stop loving her. Ye Zi, in turn, acknowledged that time changes everyone, but emphasized that these changes lead to growth, self-awareness, and a deeper understanding of love.
Xiang Zeyi confessed that he had struggled to face her and his own transformations, realizing he had hurt many people out of fear of confronting himself. He recognized that true love wasn't about constant togetherness, but about making each other better. He expressed gratitude to Ye Zi for teaching him what real love was. Recalling how he had made her wait for so many years, he declared it was now his turn to wait for her.
He kept the engagement ring, promising to place it on her finger himself when they both became truly dependable individuals. He then removed a bracelet that was very important to him, like Ye Zi herself, and handed it to her, reintroducing himself as Xiang Zeyi. Ye Zi smiled faintly, clutched the bracelet, and they walked their separate paths. However, after a long period of growth and waiting, Ye Zi and Xiang Zeyi finally reunited, holding a beautiful wedding. Their youthful romance, once fraught with challenges and separation, ultimately found a perfect and fulfilling conclusion.
