Cornered, Nie Xingchen admitted they were once lovers. Enraged and feeling betrayed, Yan Jingzhi questioned why she had lied, revealing he had spent five years searching for the ring's owner.
Nie Xingchen explained that since he couldn't remember and they couldn't go back to the past, she felt hiding the truth was the best solution. Feeling ridiculed for having fallen for her again despite her deception, Yan Jingzhi demanded to know where she was while he was in a coma and facing amnesia alone. That evening, at a farewell party for Nie Xingchen, her colleagues pleaded with her to stay, calling her the perfect chief secretary for Yan Jingzhi. As they speculated that he must be missing due to matters of the heart, Nie Xingchen received a call that Yan Jingzhi was hospitalized. She immediately had Tong Xin drive her to Jinghai Hospital, asking her to keep the visit a secret.
There, Dr. Han Ziyu warned her that while amnesia isn't fatal, alcohol poisoning can be. Inside the room, Nie Xingchen watched a sleeping Yan Jingzhi with guilt. Elsewhere in the hospital, Tong Xin tried to get Han Ziyu's attention by feigning dizziness, but he dismissed her as simply being hungry from dieting. Later, she explained to a surprised Han Ziyu that she was acting as his "shield" against unwanted advances. She then confided her admiration for him, revealing that a bad experience with a harsh doctor during a childhood illness had left her traumatized. She told him he was "the light that scatters the shadows," unlike any doctor she had ever met. As thanks, she playfully demanded he agree to two "appointments" with her a week, a condition he reluctantly accepted.
Nie Xingchen's mind drifted to a memory of her and Yan Jingzhi in college.
