To demonstrate the Muru family's unwavering loyalty, Murusuo willingly relinquished half of the Duan Dynasty's military authority, entrusting its co-management to Shangshuling Nanku Qi. Meanwhile, Nanku Mingyi, the Empress, still consumed by Muyun Qin's disdain, once again forged an imperial decree in Muyun Qin's name, ordering the immediate recall of Muyun Hego to the palace to assist with state affairs. Mu Ruhanjiang overheard marketplace rumors regarding the Muru family's alleged rebellion and Muyun Yunsheng's supposed harming of Muyun Qin.
Concerned, he ventured to a wooden house in the mountains to find Muyun Yunsheng. There, the maid Lan Yuer informed him that Muyun Yunsheng was tormented by Nanku Mingyi's daily visits and suffered from a peculiar condition, going mad upon seeing familiar faces. Within the palace, Nanku Mingyi tirelessly painted Yinrong's portrait, vowing that both Yinrong and Muyun Yunsheng would suffer a hundredfold for the grievances and indignities she had endured, proclaiming herself the fiercest entity in the palace.
Concurrently, Su Yuning returned to the palace alone, kneeling at the gates to seek re-entry, but steadfastly refused to reveal any details about her time outside. Wu Ruyi promptly reported this to Nanku Mingyi. The Empress learned that Su Yuning had fallen off a cliff during a hunt but was unexpectedly rescued, and, considering Su Yuning's celestial destiny as a future Empress, suspected Nanku Yueli was behind the incident.
Although Wu Ruyi advocated for heavy legal punishment, Nanku Mingyi, mindful of Su Yuning's destined role, merely decreed that Su Yezhang confine her to house arrest at their home in Yuezhou. Su Yezhang chastised Su Yuning for bringing shame to the Su family.
En route back to Yuezhou, Mu Ruhan Shan intercepted Su Yuning's carriage to deliver a small sword pendant (later described as a jade pendant) on behalf of Mu Ruhanjiang, telling her that Mu Ruhanjiang had departed to live his own life. Holding the pendant, Su Yuning felt a pang of sadness and loss, later gazing sorrowfully at it while confined to her home by her father.
Mu Ruhanjiang returned to his former abode in a dilapidated temple outside the city, where he learned that Gao Wuyin had already been taken away. He then bid farewell to his other brothers and resolved to join the army, intending to become as powerful as Murusuo. He departed from this place of strife, ultimately enlisting in a military camp.
Back in the palace, Nanku Mingyi subjected the paralyzed Muyun Qin to various forms of torment, personally tending to his daily needs and perversely questioning him, only to be rejected. Muyun Qin still wore Yinrong's portrait, declaring her the lifelong love of his life. Nanku Mingyi, having loved Muyun Qin for half her life, tearfully implored him to forget Yinrong and reconcile, unable to accept defeat to Yinrong.
Enraged that her lifelong love was met with a declaration of "no love," she furiously tossed Yinrong's portrait aside. Despite his severe illness, Muyun Qin, forsaking his imperial dignity, struggled and crawled from his bed towards the fallen portrait. Just as he reached it, Nanku Mingyi kicked it away. Muyun Qin adamantly insisted on retrieving the portrait, asserting that only Yinrong would ever reside in his heart.
In a fit of fury, Nanku Mingyi seized the portrait and tore it to shreds, determined to obliterate Yinrong's image and break Muyun Qin's obsession. Muyun Qin screamed in agony on the ground, proclaiming that Yinrong would forever remain in his heart. Nanku Mingyi then visited the disfigured Yinrong in Yongyin Palace for a final time.
She declared her intention to transform her love for Muyun Qin into hate, vowing to make him forget love, fill his heart solely with hate, and acknowledge only her presence, ensuring he would despise Yinrong eternally. Yinrong, observing Nanku Mingyi's continued ignorance of love after so many years, found her utterly pitiable. Upon exiting Yongyin Palace, Nanku Mingyi commanded Muyun Qin to be brought before the palace.
There, in Muyun Qin's full view, she ordered Yongyin Palace to be set ablaze and entirely consumed by fire. Muyun Qin cried out in anguish at the sight of the burning palace, desperately wishing he could rush in to save Yinrong, overwhelmed by profound suffering. Meanwhile, Shuofeng Heye arrived at Quanming Port (also referred to as Tiantuo Strait) in search of Heng Gong's ship. He was drugged by a tea vendor (or waiter).
The vendor, upon discovering a Tianluo Silk Blade in Shuofeng Heye's belongings, was terrified and quickly sent him to Tang Que and Tang Man at the pier, or directly onto Heng Gong's ship. Shuofeng Heye successfully boarded Heng Gong's vessel, preparing to cross the river back to Hanzhou. Aboard the ship, he awoke and met the brothers Tang Que and Tang Man.
Four years later, Muyun Yunsheng had been residing in Weiping Zhai in Zhongzhou (also described as Yongzhou in Great Duan). Consumed by thoughts of the graceful woman he saw in the crystal pearl, he meticulously painted her daily, always depicting her silhouette, thereby cultivating exquisite and lifelike painting skills. During this period, former princess Ji Yuncong arrived at Weiping Zhai, carrying Nanku Qi's token (or order), seeking a painting.
She claimed to desire a portrait of her deceased lover, Wang Lang, to burn and alleviate her deep longing. Muyun Yunsheng, clad in white with black hair and holding a paintbrush, was moved by her narrative of profound affection and agreed to personally create a painting for her.
However, once the artwork was completed, Ji Yuncong used an excuse to send Muyun Yunsheng away (or to retrieve a bowl for burning the painting) and covertly stole a critical painting from his room. Upon returning to his room, Muyun Yunsheng immediately noticed the discrepancy. He pursued Ji Yuncong with her portrait, questioning the truthfulness of her story about her deceased lover.
Upon discovering her tale was a fabrication, Muyun Yunsheng unexpectedly smiled, stating it was excellent, for it meant "one less person in the world troubled by love." Recognizing her clever method of stealing the painting, Muyun Yunsheng regarded Ji Yuncong as a "bosom friend" and opted not to pursue the matter further. Ji Yuncong was profoundly astonished by Muyun Yunsheng's character, having anticipated someone destined to bring chaos and bloodshed to Kyushu to be far less tranquil.
Ji Yuncong presented the stolen Muyun Pearl Illusion Map to Huo Sizhong as part of an exchange. She expected Huo Sizhong to fulfill his promise to lend her the mercenary army from Jiuyuan City in Yuezhou. However, Huo Sizhong reneged on his word, betraying her by asserting that while his army could be loaned to others, it would never be given to Ji Yuncong for a battle destined to fail.
Ji Yuncong watched Huo Sizhong depart, filled with intense anger and convinced that all individuals in the Great Duan Dynasty were as contemptible and shameless as he. In Weiping Zhai, Muyun Yunsheng instructed Lan Yuer to burn all the remaining paintings in the house, declaring them useless. Lan Yuer, despite her reluctance due to the immense value of his artwork, ultimately complied with Muyun Yunsheng's insistence. Muyun Yunsheng held the crystal illusion pearl, remarking that it was all he required.
Lan Yuer expressed her confusion, noting that for four years Muyun Yunsheng had never painted the full face of the woman within the pearl. Muyun Yunsheng murmured in response that perhaps neither he nor the woman in the illusion pearl wished to see each other.
