Mo Yuchen, who claims he cannot bear to see the suffering of all living beings, informs General Nanku that although the Chenyue sect believes in the survival of the fittest, he himself does not wish to see the world plunged into chaos. He states that Muyun Sheng has already met Mu Ruhanjiang, making the coming catastrophe in Kyushu inevitable, and he cannot watch them turn the world upside down.
Mo Yuchen proposes that if General Nanku takes him to meet Muyun Qin, he might still be able to achieve General Nanku's wishes or prevent this turmoil. He threatens to leave if General Nanku disdains working with the Chenyue sect. In the palace, Muyun Sheng, accompanied by Mu Ruhanjiang, arrives at Yongyin Palace, determined to see his mother, Yin Rong. The old woman guarding the palace, Lin Xiuman, tries to dissuade Muyun Sheng, warning him he would regret it.
However, Muyun Sheng, resolute, uses a key to open the lock and enters. The room is dimly lit, with a strong scent of herbal medicine, leading down a corridor lined with neatly arranged medicinal herbs to a wooden bed. Muyun Sheng slowly pulls back the bed's curtains, revealing his mother, whose face is disfigured and terrifying, resembling a zombie. Shocked and terrified, Muyun Sheng either faints to the ground or runs out screaming.
By the river, Su Yuning encounters Mu Ruhanjiang. She immediately recognizes him as the one who previously saved her, but Mu Ruhanjiang denies it and hastily runs away, though he silently remembers the name Su Yuning. After Muyun Sheng's visit, Yin Rong, in despair, cries and questions why she is still kept alive. Lin Xiuman remains silent, forcibly feeding Yin Rong life-extending pills, urging her to eat. At this time, Empress Nanku Mingyi arrives, feigning concern.
She often visits Yin Rong to derive comfort from her tragic state, reveling in the sight of the former "First Beauty of Duan Dynasty" now disfigured. The Empress mockingly tells Yin Rong that Muyun Sheng was terrified by her appearance, wanting Yin Rong to suffer a fate worse than death. If Lin Xiuman were to reveal Yin Rong's secret, she would die immediately; thus, her survival confirms the secret remains undisclosed. In Wanzhou, in Huai'an City, King Muyun Luan increases his military drills. His wife, Muru Ping, notices his unusual behavior and tries to subtly probe his intentions.
Muyun Luan, harboring his own plans, maintains a cheerful demeanor, either claiming he no longer covets the empire and only wishes to live a happy life with her in Wanzhou, or stating he is preparing armor to present to the emperor. Muru Ping, though outwardly calm, remains wary of Muyun Luan. Upon receiving the armor from Muyun Luan, Emperor Muyun Qin discerns Muyun Luan's rebellious intentions.
He consults with Muru Suo about Muyun Luan, planning to gift Muyun Luan one thousand warhorses in return. If Muyun Luan accepts the horses, Muru Suo is instructed to reinforce troops at Shangyang Pass, strategically controlling access to Wanzhou, or simply reinforce troops near Wanzhou. Muyun Qin informs Muru Suo of Muyun Luan's harsh and tyrannical nature, expressing his hope that the Muru family would remain loyal and stop Muyun Luan should he truly rebel.
Muru Suo firmly reaffirms the Muru family's unwavering loyalty to the Muyun dynasty for generations. In the palace, Su Yuning is about to deliver a poem to Muyun Lu when she is pushed to the ground and assaulted by Zhen Liuzhu and other palace women. Just as they are about to beat her, Mu Ruhanjiang arrives, saving Su Yuning by using a slingshot to punish Zhen Liuzhu.
He warns them against further harming Su Yuning, declaring that he will protect her from now on. Nanku Yueli, emerging from the shadows, angrily scolds the two, accusing them of a scandalous private meeting. Mu Ruhanjiang explains that Muyun Sheng is his friend, like another self, because he was abandoned by his parents, and he always seems to know what Muyun Sheng is thinking. Lin Xiuman, hearing Mu Ruhanjiang's words, is reminded of her own past relationship with Yin Rong, seeing Mu Ruhanjiang and Muyun Sheng as their former selves. Deeply moved, she decides to act.
She unearths a wooden box buried beneath a tree. After bidding a tearful farewell to Yin Rong, who tries to reach out and stop her but is confined to her bed by her disfigured state and inability to move, Lin Xiuman leaves Yongyin Palace. She changes into her official female attendant uniform and goes to Muyun Sheng.
Mu Ruhanjiang and Su Yuning are also present, but Lin Xiuman, heedless of the consequences of the Heart-Severing Grass now taking effect in her body, proceeds to reveal the secret of Yin Rong's past. Lin Xiuman recounts that Yin Rong was indeed unparalleled in beauty. The horrifying figure Muyun Sheng saw was the result of Muyun Qin's actions. Twelve years prior, Muyun Qin, trying to protect Yin Rong, dismissed numerous officials.
However, Muyun Luan forcefully entered the inner palace, compelling Muyun Qin to choose between surrendering the throne or Yin Rong. Muyun Luan had meticulously prepared for this confrontation. Under his persistent pressure, Muyun Qin, prioritizing the imperial throne, raised the Son of Heaven's Sword against Yin Rong. Yin Rong was utterly heartbroken, never imagining that the man who had pledged eternal love would attempt to kill her.
Realizing that humans pursued power rather than love, she advanced towards the sword, allowing it to pierce her body. As a Spirit, she would instinctively retaliate with spirit arts when sensing murderous intent, but out of her profound love for Muyun Qin, she restrained herself at the critical moment.
She chose to endure the severe backlash of her own spirit arts rather than harm Muyun Qin in the slightest, ultimately expending all her spiritual power and becoming the disfigured being she is now. Lin Xiuman gives Muyun Sheng the contents of the wooden box – a crystal sphere – which were left by Yin Rong. She expresses hope that Muyun Sheng can accept his mother, whose beauty, both external and internal, was truly remarkable.
As Lin Xiuman finishes her story, she feels unwell, and the Heart-Severing Grass takes full effect. Mu Ruhanjiang and Su Yuning help her back to Yongyin Palace. Mu Ruhanjiang offers to call an imperial physician, but Lin Xiuman declines. Seeing her agony, Mu Ruhanjiang realizes she had consumed Heart-Severing Grass.
Lin Xiuman, stoically enduring her pain, straightens her posture, performs a final deep bow to Mu Ruhanjiang and Su Yuning, and then closes the door to Yongyin Palace, ending her life. Outside the closed door, Mu Ruhanjiang kneels and bows his head. Meanwhile, Empress Nanku Mingyi dismisses her inner attendants and congratulates Emperor Muyun Qin, stating that Muyun Sheng now knows the truth.
