In the imperial palace, Muyun Hege knelt for an entire day outside Emperor Muyun Qin's sleeping quarters, seeking an audience and hoping for a word of praise for his readiness to go to Hanzhou for peace talks. However, Muyun Qin refused to see him. Meanwhile, in her own chamber, Muyun Hege's mother, Empress Nanku Mingyi, anxiously awaited him, refusing to eat.
An old female attendant, unable to bear the Empress's hunger, offered her porridge, but Nanku Mingyi persisted in her refusal. Wu Ruyi then informed the Empress that Muyun Hege had been kneeling outside the Emperor's palace all day, but the Emperor still would not grant him an audience. Upon hearing this, Empress Nanku Mingyi, ignoring her attendant's objections, rushed to Muyun Qin's palace to intercede for her son. As Muyun Qin opened his door, the Empress arrived.
Witnessing Muyun Hege's plea for the Emperor to trust him and his intention to handle the Hanzhou mission well, she publicly slapped Muyun Hege, declaring that she would rather he live in disgrace than die honorably in Hanzhou. Muyun Qin turned and walked away. Muyun Hege, bewildered by his mother's actions, felt only shame, asserting that he carried the blood of both the Muyun imperial family and the Nanku clan.
He vowed never to surrender or forget his honor, preferring an honorable death to a life of humiliation. The Empress deemed his pursuit of glory foolish, believing life itself to be the ultimate foundation. Yet, Muyun Hege remained resolute in his chosen path.
Meanwhile, at Jiuzhou Inn, Muyun Luan, who had packed his bags and was planning to return to Wanzhou, left a sword for his son, Muyun De, commenting that Muyun De was too ambitious for Wanzhou to contain him. Xue Huo, an accomplice, arrived to stop Muyun Luan from leaving.
He revealed that Muyun De was using Jiuzhou Inn to buy and sell intelligence and had secured exclusive rights to the salt and grain trade, which are vital state resources, suggesting Muyun De harbored ulterior motives. Xue Huo reminded Muyun Luan that their earlier plan to assassinate Muyun Qin had failed after Mu Ruhanjiang sustained severe injuries, rendering him unusable.
He pressured Muyun Luan for accountability, stating that if the Emperor remained alive, Xue Huo would die, and Muyun Luan would not fare any better, as they were "ants on the same boat." Muyun Luan acknowledged the critical stage of their plot, asserting it could not fail, and proposed a new assassin: Empress Nanku Mingyi, whom he believed could easily succeed. Muyun Luan later met the Empress by a stone bridge for a secret discussion.
She desperately implored him to find a way to stop Muyun Hege from going to Hanzhou, declaring she would do anything to save him. Muyun Luan feigned helplessness, claiming to be merely a minor prince and that she overestimated him, suggesting she seek other methods to stop Muyun Hege. Their conversation then shifted to her position as Empress, a symbol of supreme honor and wealth among women.
However, Nanku Mingyi confided that in her eyes, the Empress's position felt as cold as frost, as she lacked her husband's affection and the simple joys of motherhood. Muyun Luan subtly twisted her perspective, stating that Muyun Qin, not the Empress's position, was her true "cage." He cunningly offered to replace Muyun Qin, promising to provide her with the life she desired, to let her feel a man's affection and see the warmth of the world.
Seeing that she was moved by his words, Muyun Luan produced a poisoned incense stick, instructing her to swap it with Muyun Qin's. However, Nanku Mingyi was no fool. She coldly accepted the poisoned incense but warned Muyun Luan that if any harm befell Muyun Hege, Muyun Qin would be informed that Muyun Luan had supplied the poison, revealing his murderous intent.
That same night, Nanku Yueli unexpectedly visited Muyun Luan's room at Jiuzhou Inn, begging for his help to become the next Empress of the Great Duan Dynasty. Muyun Luan scoffed at her ambition, remarking that Nanku women tended to overestimate themselves. He pointed out that her reputation as a courtesan who had entertained guests made her unsuitable for the Empress's position.
Nanku Yueli, however, believed that if she could just see Muyun Hege, she would know how to handle the situation. Muyun Luan, noting her striking resemblance to the Empress and her equally unyielding spirit, found himself intrigued. He stated that he never helped anyone for free and that there was no such thing as a free lunch. As Nanku Yueli looked on in confusion, he approached her, suggesting she would have to pay a price.
After a moment's thought, Nanku Yueli willingly undressed and lay on the bed. Muyun Luan smiled and walked towards her, unaware that Muyun De stood outside the door, observing their intimate encounter. In Hanzhou, Muru Hanshan secretly abducted Muyun Yanshuang. He then forged a letter in her handwriting for Muyun Han, claiming she was returning to Yuezhou to arrange provisions for the Muru Iron Cavalry.
Elsewhere, Muru Hanshan led Muyun Yanshuang to a secluded spot, shooting her with a "traceless arrow" imbued with secret arts. He wanted Muyun Yanshuang, now afflicted by the arrow, to guide them to the Helan main camp. He then bound her to a tree on the mountain for public display. Muyun Yanshuang, before collapsing, scoffed at Muru Hanshan's pipe dream. Su He, while gathering herbs, accidentally discovered the severely weakened Muyun Yanshuang hanging there.
He immediately raced back to his camp to inform Shuofeng Heye. Upon hearing the news, Shuofeng Heye immediately rode off, disregarding everything else. He recalled the vow he had made when Jinhuzhui left: he would never again allow anyone to harm "his woman." Tieldo tried to stop him, tearfully confessing her years of love and asking why he didn't like her. Shuofeng Heye coldly replied that he had never loved her and rode away decisively.
Unwilling to give up, Tieldo mounted her horse and chased after him. At the Sucin tribe, Ziyan gathered "death warriors" from her people, preparing to break their alliance and confront the Muru Iron Cavalry independently. Once the proud rear guard of the eagles, the Sucin tribe had lost their dignity after being massacred by Shuofeng. While challenging the Muru Iron Cavalry was risky, for them, dying honorably after exacting revenge was far more comforting than living in humiliation.
They only asked Ziyan to lead them in a battle to the death, vowing no regrets regardless of the outcome. Ziyan, deeply moved by their resolve, planned to steal Tieluan's seal to retrieve the Sucin tribe's repeating crossbows. Back at the camp, Tieluan, unaware of Ziyan's true intentions, lovingly expressed his feelings for her. Though heartbroken, Ziyan suppressed her sorrow and repeatedly urged Tieluan to take care of himself, especially with her pregnancy.
Tieluan noticed her recent early departures and late returns, but Ziyan concealed her plan to abandon the alliance, claiming to be busy with the Sucin tribe's mineral resources. Tieluan asked her to rest peacefully in the camp during her pregnancy, but Ziyan firmly declared that she was not only Tieluan's woman but also the ruler of the Sucin tribe, and thus, had to bear responsibility for her people. She embraced Tieluan, tearfully reluctant to leave him.
