Under severe pressure from courtiers like Gusong Zhi, who urged him to prioritize the empire and its people, Emperor Muyun Qin reluctantly issued a decree to kill Pan Xi to protect the Crown Prince, Muyun Sheng, though he hesitated before signing. Muyun Qin recalled the painful memory of personally stabbing Yin Rong, acknowledging it as his life's biggest regret and a mistake he could not undo.
He explained to Muyun Sheng that he had sought to be both a hero, worthy of Yin Rong, and a good emperor. He was torn between his empire and his love for Yin Rong, ultimately choosing the empire, believing it was his power to protect Yin Rong and Muyun Sheng. This choice, while making him a good emperor, meant losing Yin Rong.
Muyun Qin shared this with Muyun Sheng, hoping he would learn to make such difficult trade-offs between personal feelings and greater responsibilities. Meanwhile, Muyun Qin visited Muyun Sheng, who was unconscious and murmured "Father Emperor," reminding Muyun Qin of Muyun Sheng's resemblance to Yin Rong and the helplessness of life in the palace. When Muyun Sheng awoke, he sought forgiveness for his earlier wild behavior.
Muyun Qin concealed the truth, claiming that Yu Xinji had merely taken his wooden sword after he became drunk, and dismissed his son's guilt, inquiring about his health. Muyun Sheng, however, asked Muyun Qin if he had ever truly been happy, despite being considered a good emperor. Muyun Sheng insisted that he would never lose Pan Xi, believing she would always be by his side.
To prove it, he called Pan Xi's name into the Mu Yun Pearl, hoping she would appear for Muyun Qin, but the pearl remained dim, and Pan Xi did not materialize. The decree to kill Pan Xi quickly reached Muyun De and Master Mo. Master Mo suspected that Muyun Luan was orchestrating events from behind the scenes, viewing Muyun Luan as talented but ultimately detrimental to their plans. Master Mo decided to intervene to salvage the situation.
Ling Heqing, carrying the emperor's decree, proceeded to the Huangji Jingtian Sect, where Pan Xi was imprisoned in the Observatory or its basement, shackled. Pan Xi questioned why the human emperor wanted to kill her when she had committed no wrong. Ling Heqing, though empathetic, could not defy the imperial order, as the honor of the Huangji Jingtian Sect and its trust from the imperial court depended on his obedience.
Pan Xi mocked his claims of acting for the people, accusing him of self-interest, and stated that as a Charm Spirit, he, a mere human, could not kill her, as she had been captured by a Phantom. Ling Heqing acknowledged their differences in identity and then produced the Ice Thorn, a weapon gifted to him by the Phantom, designed to scatter the spiritual essence of Charm Spirits, preventing them from ever re-forming.
Pan Xi, frightened, demanded to know the Phantom's identity and its motive for attacking her. Ling Heqing revealed that the Phantom's mission was to maintain peace on the land and that Pan Xi was not an ordinary Charm Spirit but a "slave." He explained that if Pan Xi remained with Muyun Sheng, her true master would eventually use her to slaughter Kyushu and destroy the entire land. For the sake of all living beings, Pan Xi had to die.
Pan Xi, who had fallen deeply in love with Muyun Sheng and sworn a lifelong vow to him, declared she only wished to be with him, indifferent to the fate of Kyushu or the land. Ling Heqing continued to persuade her, warning that if she insisted on staying with Muyun Sheng, he would reveal her true intentions, which would only bring Muyun Sheng pain.
He suggested an early separation, hoping Muyun Sheng would eventually recover and live a life free of harm. Heartbroken and realizing escape was impossible with the shackles and the Ice Thorn before her, Pan Xi pleaded for one last meeting with Muyun Sheng. Ling Heqing granted her request. Pan Xi froze time and appeared before Muyun Sheng in his Unhealed Studio, or bamboo house.
Muyun Sheng was overjoyed and expressed his heartfelt feelings, while Pan Xi, crying, embraced him, reluctant to leave. Simultaneously, in Pan Xi's original location, Ling Heqing plunged the Ice Thorn into her chest. Pan Xi, severely wounded, clung to Muyun Sheng as her breath weakened, and her spiritual essence began to disperse. Muyun Sheng sensed something was wrong, asking if someone was hurting her, but Pan Xi could only hold him tightly.
As Ling Heqing watched Pan Xi's body dissipate into spiritual essence, Master Mo, using his staff, discreetly extracted a wisp of her spiritual essence, smirking to himself. Ling Heqing felt sorrow for her deep devotion. Time resumed its normal flow. Muyun Sheng, realizing Pan Xi's distress, rushed to the Huangji Jingtian Sect to confront Ling Heqing, who somberly confirmed that he had just killed Pan Xi with his own hands.
Muyun Sheng was devastated, collapsing and cursing heaven, asking why fate was so cruel when they had harmed no one. His words caused the long-stopped star tracks to restart their movement. Ling Heqing exclaimed that this was impossible, but Muyun Sheng ignored his pleas, proceeding to light up all the stars and deliberately destroy the star tracks, causing them to self-ignite and be consumed by fire.
He declared his intention to calculate his own destiny and find a way to bring Pan Xi back. Ling Heqing, kneeling in despair as the star tracks burned, lamented that with their destruction, no one could predict the fate of the Great Duan Dynasty. Muyun Sheng, uncaring, proclaimed that he no longer wanted to be his former self and that from that moment on, no fate, not even heaven itself, could stop him from doing what he wanted.
In the Muru manor, Mu Ruhanjiang was playing chess with Hanshan, who urged him to visit Madam Muru. Though Hanjiang initially dismissed Hanshan, he went to Madam Muru's courtyard. A maid then reported that the Crown Prince had destroyed the star tracks. Muru Shuo instructed Madam Muru to manage the household. Madam Muru cautioned Hanjiang against leaving, but he took a horse and rode to the Observatory.
Hanjiang soon learned that Muyun Sheng had been apprehended by guards, reportedly for destroying the star tracks and burning the Huangji Jingtian Sect, and wanted to seek justice for them. However, Muyun Sheng, using his authority as a Muyun, insisted that Hanjiang take Su Yuning away, stating they were the only two he wished to protect.
Acknowledging his duty as a Muru, Hanjiang decided to first take Su Yuning home and then return for Muyun Sheng, proposing they could escape together. Muyun Sheng, heartbroken by Pan Xi's loss, refused to flee, declaring that he would no longer escape and would fight heaven to the very end. Hanjiang left to pick up Su Yuning, intending to take her away.
