Centuries ago, Ling Yufeng, ancestor of the Huangji Jingtian Sect, crossed the Tiankuo Strait to Hanzhou and subsequently vanished without a trace. Following his disappearance, Muru Tiantong effortlessly conquered Hanzhou but then also disappeared, leaving behind a warning: "When you raise the butcher's knife, you too shall die by it." While the Muru clan adopted this as an ancestral teaching, Muyun Luan believed Muru Tiantong's words hinted at an unspeakable secret transaction between Ling Yufeng and Muru Tiantong.
Muyun Luan now sought to uncover these past events, aiming to discredit the Huangji Jingtian Sect. Muyun Luan confronted Ling Heqing, the Grand Priest of the Huangji Jingtian Sect, reminding him of Ling Yufeng and challenging the sect's credibility. He declared that among the six tribes of Kyushu, individuals with human forms but spirit hearts were the most dangerous to humankind. As Muyun Sheng possessed the Muyun family's bloodline, Ling Heqing could not directly harm him.
Therefore, Muyun Luan demanded that Ling Heqing use secret arts to eliminate Pan Xi, the female spirit residing with Muyun Sheng, during a royal banquet three days later. He placed the "Star Canon" in Ling Heqing's hands and threatened that if Ling Heqing failed to appear at the banquet or refused to comply, he would ensure the Huangji Jingtian Sect's reputation was utterly ruined and it vanished from Kyushu.
For the sake of his sect's honor, Ling Heqing reluctantly accepted Muyun Luan's demand. He went with his senior disciple to the ancestral altar in the sect's underground chamber. After dismissing his disciple, Ling Heqing knelt before the altar, apologizing to his ancestors for having to violate their teachings. He then used a hairpin to cut his own wrist, and a black phantom emerged from behind him, signifying the use of the forbidden secret art.
Meanwhile, Muyun Sheng and Su Yuning's engagement had been settled. Emperor Muyun Qin decided to hold their grand engagement ceremony on the day of a family banquet, prompting widespread discussion among courtiers about Muyun Sheng's position as Crown Prince. Both Muyun Sheng and Pan Xi were deeply troubled by the impending marriage. In her chambers, Su Yuning steadfastly refused to try on her wedding gown.
Empress Nanku Mingyi, splendidly dressed, came to her, urging her to accept her destiny as the future Empress, a position many women coveted. Su Yuning, however, disdained the title, stating she did not seek to be the world's greatest but only desired daily warmth. Nanku Mingyi, angered by what she perceived as Su Yuning's mockery of her own innermost pain, ordered her slapped. Despite the blow, Su Yuning's conviction remained unshaken.
Nanku Mingyi then scoffed at Su Yuning's naiveté, asserting that without power, even daily warmth was precarious. She warned that Su Yuning's defiance would result in the death of her entire family, and that since Muyun Sheng himself had accepted his fate, no one could save her. Nevertheless, Su Yuning still clung to her hope for Mu Ruhanjiang, convinced he was the one person who could save her and bring her warmth.
Mu Ruhanjiang's brother, Hanshan, approached their father, Mu Rushuo, about Mu Ruhanjiang's feelings for Su Yuning, hoping Mu Rushuo would conceal the impending engagement from Mu Ruhanjiang. Mu Rushuo, furious, considered coveting the future Empress a capital crime. He admonished Hanshan and ordered strict surveillance over Mu Ruhanjiang. Lanyuer arrived at Weiping Zhai, seeking to meet Muyun Sheng but was initially blocked by Yuxinji.
Muyun Sheng emerged and met with Lanyuer, who revealed Muyun De's words and Muyun Luan's plan to harm Pan Xi at the banquet. Muyun Sheng's expression grew solemn, but after Lanyuer departed, he began to laugh. He realized he could exploit this trap to free himself from the burden of the Crown Prince title, asking Yuxinji if there was a precedent for a "madman" becoming a ruler. Muyun Sheng then visited the Muru Residence.
He secretly requested Mu Rushuo to keep Mu Ruhanjiang confined to the residence on the day of the banquet, which Mu Rushuo promised to do. Muyun Sheng then sought out Mu Ruhanjiang, concealing his true intentions. He happily told Mu Ruhanjiang they could be friends again, making Mu Ruhanjiang believe he had come to play, but then vaguely told him to take care, and his demeanor shifted when Pan Xi was mentioned.
He quickly bid farewell to Mu Ruhanjiang and returned to Weiping Zhai. Back in Weiping Zhai, Muyun Sheng intentionally hurt Pan Xi with his words, causing her sorrow and urging her to leave. She asked for a kiss, but he turned away.
After Pan Xi departed, Muyun Sheng secretly vowed that if he survived the next day's dangerous palace banquet, he would find her, and they would live a truly free and ethereal life together, as he was determined not to let Pan Xi be endangered. The next day, Muyun Luan encountered Nanku Yueli, looking distressed, in an inn and realized that Muyun De had not truly killed her.
Meanwhile, at the Muru Residence, Mu Ruhanjiang overheard Mu Rushuo and Hanshan discussing Muyun Sheng and Su Yuning's grand engagement ceremony scheduled for that very day. Remembering his vows to Su Yuning in the underground cave and her past words, Mu Ruhanjiang made a firm decision. He seized Hanshan's warhorse and, defying the Muru army's encirclement, galloped towards the palace.
Hanshan prepared to pursue him but was stopped by the Muru Lady, who stated that the Muru family owed Mu Ruhanjiang much, and this was all she could do for him. Though Hanshan resented his mother's favoritism, he reluctantly yielded to her command as Mu Ruhanjiang sped away. In the palace, Wu Ruyi, acting on Empress Nanku Mingyi's orders, pressured Su Yuning to wear the wedding gown by threatening her father, Su Cheng Zhang.
Su Yuning, however, stubbornly refused, waiting for Mu Ruhanjiang. As time dwindled, she instructed a eunuch to light an incense stick, declaring that once it burned out, she would abandon hope and resignedly put on the gown. Within the grand palace hall, Su Yuning's hope gradually eroded with each passing moment. Simultaneously, Muyun Luan arrived at the palace, eagerly anticipating the evening's "good show," hoping to witness his two sons contend for the throne before Emperor Muyun Qin's very eyes.
