Su Yuning, a beautiful maiden from Yuezhou, arrived at Jiuzhou Inn in Tianqi City to serve as a royal companion, with her Ma-ma meticulously coaching her on posture as she disembarked. Wan Yinglai, another maiden staying at the inn, immediately mocked Su Yuning's beauty and humble carriage. Wan Yinglai's maid, Cailu, slapped Su Yuning, but Su Ma-ma promptly retaliated. Wan Yinglai then feigned an apology, blaming her servant's ignorance.
Being gentle and wanting to avoid trouble upon her arrival, Su Yuning chose not to pursue the matter. That night, Su Ma-ma cautioned Su Yuning about Wan Yinglai. Su Yuning confessed her aversion to entering the palace, viewing it as a gilded cage that would stifle her freedom and joy, leaving only endless conflict.
Su Ma-ma, displeased by this sentiment, emphasized that life invariably involves contention, and only by establishing herself firmly in the palace could Su Yuning ensure the honor of the Su family in Yuezhou and her parents' security. In the outskirts of Tianqi City, Mu Ruhanjiang, a swift and striking young man, saved a three-year-old child, Gao Wuyin, from a group of pursuing bandits. His master, Mu Ruyuan, subsequently chastised him for impulsively using his exceptional martial arts against mere brigands.
Mu Ruyuan asserted that Mu Ruhanjiang's abilities were meant for grander purposes, not trivial fights, and urged him to remember that true power lies in inspiring and uniting many for the protection of all living beings. Mu Ruhanjiang once again pressed his master for details about his true identity, but Mu Ruyuan only revealed that he was found abandoned on the streets. Meanwhile, in the Nanku manor, Cai Ruyi reported Mu Rushuo's movements to Nanku De.
She revealed that Mu Ruyuan, a former general of the Muru Iron Cavalry, was secretly working as a servant in the Muru manor. Nanku De, already wary and suspicious of the Muru family due to their significant military power and possession of the Heaven-Opening Sword, suspected Mu Ruyuan's disguise was part of a larger scheme.
He decided to monitor Mu Ruyuan closely with Cai Ruyi to uncover the truth, fearing that any disloyalty from Mu Rushuo could destabilize the entire court. In a slave camp dungeon, Princess Muyun Yanshuang arrived to select a battle slave. A merchant informed her that Shuofeng Heye was a chieftain of the Shuofeng clan. Muyun Yanshuang initially dismissed the lineage, stating the Shuofeng clan, strong 300 years ago, was now merely surviving.
However, Shuofeng Heye's intense gaze and raw ferocity, despite his youth, impressed her. She changed her mind, purchasing him for a substantial sum to be her battle slave and promising to take him from the camp if he survived the trials. Shuofeng Heye, seizing this slim chance for escape, defiantly proclaimed himself 'Tieqin, King of Mountains and Earth,' declaring that his path would not end there.
That night, Su Yuning, heavily intoxicated and still distraught over the prospect of entering the palace, wandered aimlessly among the flowers. Simultaneously, Mu Ruhanjiang, wearing a straw cloak, came upon Mu Ruyuan, who lay mortally wounded by a black-clad assailant. Mu Ruyuan attempted to reveal Mu Ruhanjiang's surname but died before he could speak.
Mu Ruhanjiang, seeking revenge for his master's death, drew the Hanchu Sword, which Mu Ruyuan had taught him to wield, and killed the black-clad attacker in a fierce struggle. It was then that Su Yuning, with bloodstains on her person, stumbled into Mu Ruhanjiang's presence. She groggily asked if he was injured before collapsing unconscious into his arms. Recognizing Su Yuning from the items she carried, Mu Ruhanjiang swiftly brought her back to Jiuzhou Inn.
Su Ma-ma was distraught upon seeing them, fearing that Mu Ruhanjiang had committed an impropriety against Su Yuning. Cailu, Wan Yinglai's maid, witnessed Mu Ruhanjiang carrying Su Yuning and, upon overhearing their exchange, loudly called attention to the situation, drawing the innkeeper and other onlookers. A man being found in a maiden's room was a severe transgression.
To safeguard Su Yuning's reputation against inevitable gossip, Su Ma-ma and Mu Ruhanjiang devised a plan: Su Ma-ma publicly accused Mu Ruhanjiang of being a thief. The innkeeper, recognizing Mu Ruhanjiang as a notorious troublemaker from Tianqi City, refused to release him easily and, threatening Su Yuning's honor, imprisoned him in the slave camp dungeon. There, Mu Ruhanjiang observed Shuofeng Heye during training and offered advice on his methods.
This interaction led them to exchange names and swear an oath of brotherhood. The following morning, Su Yuning awoke and inquired about the previous night's events. Su Ma-ma, seeking to prevent further complications, told her that she had suffered from a high fever and that her memories were merely a dream.
At the Cangjian Pavilion in Tianqi City, Emperor Muyun Qin and Muru family head Mu Rushuo engaged in a friendly sparring match with wooden staves, their bond akin to brothers. Emperor Muyun Qin declared Mu Rushuo to be the person he trusted most in his life, yet he subtly questioned if Mu Rushuo truly had only two sons. Mu Rushuo hesitated, a heavy burden on his heart, before affirming that he had only two.
Though Emperor Muyun Qin knew of a third son, he chose not to press the issue. Immediately upon returning to his residence, Mu Rushuo urgently instructed his eldest son, Hanshan, to locate and kill his third brother without delay. Three days later, the maidens proceeded to the palace for the selection ceremony.
Wan Yinglai, with malicious intent, deliberately misled Su Yuning to sit in the seat designated for Nanku Yueli, the Empress Nanku Mingyi's niece, who was highly respected by the other maidens due to her imperial connection. Su Yuning only realized her error when Nanku Yueli arrived with great fanfare. When the appointed time came, the maidens were ushered into the great hall to pay respects to the Empress.
Imperial Astrologer Ling Heqing, acting on the Emperor's decree, arrived to divine the fate of each maiden through their star charts. Wan Yinglai was foretold a great misfortune, marking her for immediate expulsion. Unwilling to accept her fate, she began to rage loudly in the hall, prompting the Empress to order her dragged out and beaten to death by the golden melon warriors.
When Ling Heqing examined Su Yuning's birthdate, he discovered she possessed the destiny of an Empress, destined to become the future Emperor's empress. He immediately knelt and prostrated himself before her. The Empress, initially perplexed by Ling Heqing's actions, was then informed of Su Yuning's imperial destiny. The Empress consequently decreed that all other maidens, including a visibly reluctant Nanku Yueli, were to bow in homage to Su Yuning.
