Muyun Sheng is deeply aware that his destiny is fated to bring suffering to those around him, leading him to shy away from pursuing what he desires. Although Lan Yuer perceives this as cowardice, Muyun Sheng clarifies that he is not cowardly but simply not greedy; he merely wishes to know that someone will always be there to listen to him. When Lan Yuer departs, the "Unwavering Study" falls silent, with bamboo leaves suspended in mid-air.
The mysterious woman from his enchanted pearl repeatedly appears before him, sometimes with her back to him in a green dress, other times turning around, though Muyun Sheng closes his eyes, afraid to be greedy enough to truly see her. He is frequently tormented by nightmares recalling a mysterious event, the "flower sea night," that occurred four years prior.
When he questions Lan Yuer about this, she reveals that no one witnessed what transpired, and even the twelve guards stationed there perished. Overwhelmed by sadness, Muyun Sheng finds himself recalling scenes from that night whenever he holds the enchanted pearl, which Lan Yuer eventually takes from him, urging him to rest. Meanwhile, in Wanzhou, Muyun Luan, in a subtle gesture using a rooster, reveals his ambition to contend with Muyun Qin for the throne.
Muru Ping (also referred to as Mrs. Muru in one account) not only refrains from directly addressing his ambition but advises him to live a peaceful life in Wanzhou and not covet the empire due to Muyun Qin's declining health. After Muru Ping leaves, Muyun Luan drops his pretense and, dismissing his servants, consults with his confidants.
Huo Sizhong presents Muyun Luan with the "Muyun Enchanted Pearl Painting," claiming it was personally created by Muyun Sheng and holds the secrets to Kyushu's operations and powerful secret arts, deeming it an invaluable heavenly book. In exchange, Huo Sizhong requests Muyun Luan to employ his mercenary group from Yuezhou during any future coup. Muyun Luan accepts the painting and instructs Huo Sizhong to continue monitoring Muyun Sheng.
Later, Muyun Luan learns from his subordinate that the imperial court is once again requesting a loan, and the national treasury is empty. This is attributed to Nanku Qi, who controls half of the military power in the Duan Dynasty and has repeatedly abused his authority to enrich himself under the guise of strengthening the army.
Nanku Qi even ordered the Muru iron cavalry to stand by and allow the Helan tribe to massacre other tribes in Hanzhou, aiming to severely weaken the Muru family's influence. Despite his subordinate's urging to raise an army, citing Muyun Qin's illness and Nanku Qi's control as opportune moments, Muyun Luan decides to continue lending money to the court, but with the condition that his "nation-stabilizing" actions be publicized.
He states his intention to reclaim the throne through legitimate means, believing he would be a hundred times more capable as emperor than Muyun Qin. From Yunzhong City, Liu Qijun, a renowned Heluo craftsman (also referred to as an "old man"), arrives to deliver two long-awaited artifacts to Muyun Luan: the 'Koutianze' royal sword (also referred to as a "king's blade") and a staff (also referred to as 'Nilin').
Both were meticulously forged from 'Xushen Xintie,' the result of Heluo's painstaking efforts, much to Muyun Luan's satisfaction. Muyun Luan attempts to commission Liu Qijun to produce 10,000 'Xibingjia' armors for battle, but Liu Qijun flatly refuses to participate in warfare. Unable to compel him, Muyun Luan instead presents Liu Qijun with a bottle of 'Mingyuechen' and grants the Liu family unlimited rights to independently mine any mineral treasures they discover within Wanzhou territory without needing official reporting.
That night, Muyun Luan presents the staff/Nilin to the recently recovered Mo Yuchen (also referred to as Mr. Mo), claiming it was specially crafted for him by Heluo. Mo Yuchen is greatly impressed by the intricate craftsmanship and expresses his unwavering loyalty to Muyun Luan, believing Muyun Luan understands him best. Muyun Luan then tasks Mo Yuchen with examining the "Muyun Enchanted Pearl Painting" to determine if it conceals any secret arts.
Mo Yuchen, recalling the night four years ago when Muyun Sheng held the Emperor's Sword, finds it difficult to imagine secret arts being hidden in a painting. However, upon closer inspection, he is profoundly shocked to discover that the woman depicted in the painting holds the "Book of Enchanted Spirits."
Mo Yuchen informs Muyun Luan that this book, which only the Mei tribe excels in, contains the most profound and supreme secret arts and calculations, making it a coveted heavenly book that, if obtained, grants all desired secret arts. Mo Yuchen, deeply desiring this book, deduces that Muyun Sheng must have encountered both the woman and the book.
Seeing Mo Yuchen's strong reaction, Muyun Luan agrees to send him to Tianqi City to search for the book, promising to arrange another individual to assist him there. In a guesthouse in Tianqi City, Mo Yuchen observes Muyun De (Muyun Luan's son, also referred to as a "prince" or "heir"), who is disguised in a straw hat but openly displays his wealth and authority by flashing merchant tokens, surprising the innkeeper and even Mo Yuchen.
Muyun De, head of the Wanzhou Chamber of Commerce and possessing immense wealth across Kyushu, is nonetheless intensely ambitious for greater power. Recognizing this, Mo Yuchen proposes a partnership, offering to help Muyun De achieve his ambition of taking over the world.
Muyun De, indeed driven by the desire for "the world," agrees to Mo Yuchen's terms: he will help Mo Yuchen gain access to Muyun Sheng in exchange for Mo Yuchen assisting him in his quest to conquer the world. Meanwhile, at the imperial court, Muyun Qin, gravely ill and confined to his bed, watches as the ministers engage in a heated debate over the succession.
Senior minister Xue Huo proposes that Muyun Hego be appointed Crown Prince, arguing that Muyun Hego, as the legitimate imperial son, is the most suitable candidate and that the Empress (Nanku Mingyi) serves as an exemplary figure. Muyun Qin attempts to strongly oppose this proposal by ringing a copper bell, but Empress Nanku Mingyi secretly removes it, effectively silencing him. Ministers are divided into several factions, each advocating for a different prince.
The issue of Nanku Qi's military corruption and the inaction of the Muru iron cavalry are also brought to light. Overwhelmed and agitated by the controversy, Muyun Qin observes the escalating arguments. Ultimately, the Empress decides to postpone the discussion on the Crown Prince and adjourns the court.
In her palanquin, the Empress expresses her bewilderment as to why Muyun Qin refuses to name Muyun Hego as Crown Prince, believing him to be the best candidate by both birth and ability. Muyun Qin, however, does not answer her question, merely ordering that he be taken to Cangjian Pavilion. Following the contentious court session, Muru Su is subjected to insults from several ministers, who call him a "coward," yet he chooses to remain silent.
