The Prisoner of Beauty Episode 31 Recap
> The Prisoner of Beauty Recap
Wei Shao stubbornly refused to admit that he missed Xiao Qiao or that she cared about him. He suggested going on an inspection tour, and everyone insisted on going with him. Qiao Ci proposed that Wei Shao and Xiao Qiao both go to Kang Commandery. Xiao Qiao had been away from home for a year, and her family missed her dearly.
Wei Shao thought of the river lanterns Xiao Qiao had released and the words she said when drunk, realizing that she missed home in her heart. Fearing that Wei Shao might still hold on to his hatred, Gongsun Yang suggested returning to Yu Commandery to avoid worrying Madam Xu. Wei Shao agreed to let Qiao Ci go bring Xiao Qiao back home. Once she had enough fun, he would escort her to the Wei border himself.
At this point, Wei Shao still couldn't let go of his inner knot. Wei Liang and Wei Qu knew that Wei Shao had once sworn to go to Kang Commandery one day to kill the Qiao family, so now was not the right time to go. Although Wei Liang missed Xiao Tao, he had no choice but to follow Wei Shao back.
Still, he kept muttering about how Xiao Tao had gone to Kang Commandery to fetch reinforcements and brought Qiao Ci, but refused to come see him. On their way back, Wei Shao and the others passed through Boya and saw Bi Zhi hunting. They were surprised that Bi Zhi wasn’t personally leading troops in battle. Only then did Bi Zhi learn that Xiao Qiao had gone to bring reinforcements in order to ambush Liu Yan’s backup forces.
When Xiao Qiao was discovered by General Lin, he originally wanted to capture her, but Xiao Qiao reminded him that crossing the river during such heavy rain would certainly lead to drowning in the Yang River. Having led troops for many years, General Lin naturally knew someone must have built a dike. Seeing birds flying overhead further convinced him of an ambush.
Coupled with Xiao Qiao’s explanation that Liu Yan disregarded family bonds, General Lin eventually sent a message to Liu Yan saying he encountered an ambush and could not provide reinforcements, and then ordered a retreat. Xiao Qiao again released river lanterns, praying for Wei Shao’s safety. When Wei Shao heard that Xiao Qiao led several hundred men to ambush Liu Yan’s forces, he was extremely anxious. Gongsun Yang admired Xiao Qiao even more.
Wei Shao immediately led a search party to find her. Upon hearing what had happened to Xiao Qiao, Da Qiao was filled with guilt and told Bi Zhi Xiao Qiao’s true intentions. Worried about Xiao Qiao’s safety, Da Qiao decided to return to Kang Commandery, and Bi Zhi agreed. Wei Shao arrived at the place where Xiao Qiao had built a dike and seemed to see her personally carrying sand and stones. His heart ached.
Xiao Qiao swore to do her utmost to earn an opportunity for Wei Shao, even if it cost her life—she would never let him down. At the same time, she missed Wei Shao deeply and hoped he would come to her, yearning to return home with the one she loved. Wei Shao chased Xiao Qiao in the rain. Chun Niang tried to persuade Xiao Qiao to wait for him.
Xiao Qiao knew they weren’t an ordinary couple; at most, she would wait one day. If Wei Shao didn’t show up, she would go to Kang Commandery alone. When Wei Shao arrived at the crossing bridge, he sought shelter from the rain and guessed that Xiao Qiao must have crossed the river. Unexpectedly, Xiao Qiao hadn’t crossed due to the dangerous rain. Wei Shao, overwhelmed with emotion, embraced her but scolded her for taking such a risk.
Xiao Qiao, pretending to be angry, returned to her room. Chun Niang told Wei Shao that Xiao Qiao had always missed him and that he shouldn’t hurt her feelings. The Wei brothers also criticized Wei Shao for not knowing how to say anything nice. Gongsun Yang persuaded everyone to rest and give Wei Shao and Xiao Qiao some private time together.
Wei Shao came to see Xiao Qiao and deliberately brought two oranges, placing them before her, trying to make small talk—complaining the charcoal fire wasn’t warm enough, then that the quilt was too thin. Xiao Qiao snapped back at him without mercy. Wei Shao crouched before her and admitted he was the one feeling cold. Xiao Qiao couldn’t help but laugh.
Wei Shao also confessed that these days had not been good for him—he always missed Xiao Qiao and felt lost waking up without her by his side. Regarding today’s incident, he explained he misspoke and wasn’t trying to be harsh. He questioned why Xiao Qiao went to the battlefield alone—wasn’t she afraid? Xiao Qiao admitted she was scared, but her lover was still on the battlefield, and she had promised to help him resist the enemy.
She didn’t want her lover to think she didn’t love him. She hoped to live and die with him. However, she couldn’t gamble with her family and the people of Yanzhou—she just wanted Wei Shao to know they were all important. Wei Shao said he understood Xiao Qiao and admitted he had ignored her difficulties. He recognized how much she had done for the Qiao family, yet he failed to appreciate it.
In fact, no one had done better than Xiao Qiao. She had maneuvered between two nations, and even the slightest disturbance would hurt her the most. Wei Shao also admitted he had never given Xiao Qiao any promises, making her live under immense pressure. While searching for her, he kept asking himself—if he lost her, even if he killed all his enemies and ruled the world, what would it matter? It was his fault for not cherishing Xiao Qiao properly.
He only hoped she wouldn’t become disheartened or doubt his sincerity. Wei Shao voluntarily offered to accompany Xiao Qiao to Kang Commandery, to see the place where she grew up. His grandmother had always told him to let go of his hatred—perhaps only by truly arriving in Kang Commandery could he let go. Xiao Qiao suddenly realized how much Wei Shao had sacrificed for her. To Wei Shao, everything Xiao Qiao had done was worth it.
Moved, Xiao Qiao kissed him. On the way back with his remaining defeated troops, Liu Yan had Liu Shan tally the death toll. Out of the 100,000 soldiers who set out, only 30,000 remained. Only three generals were left. Liu Shan advised that the war couldn’t go on any longer, or Liangya would be doomed. He reminded Liu Yan not to act alone and to focus on appeasing the clan elders.
However, Liu Xiao insisted on regrouping and continuing the war. Liu Yan ordered Liu Xiao to arrest General Lin for deserting the battlefield and immediately ordered a retreat. Liu Shan was overjoyed, thinking Liu Yan had accepted his advice. He quickly suggested that upon return, he would admit fault to the clan on Liu Yan’s behalf and hoped Liu Yan would also show a cooperative attitude.
Though Liu Yan remained indifferent on the surface, inwardly, he had begun to harbor murderous intent toward Liu Shan. Xiao Qiao and Wei Shao arrived in Kang Commandery. Wei Liang finally saw Xiao Tao, whom he missed dearly. Bi Zhi and Da Qiao returned with them, but Qiao Yue treated them coldly, with eyes only for Wei Shao. Xiao Qiao’s father treated Bi Zhi with great respect.
Wei Shao noticed Qiao Yue’s snobbishness, politely addressing Bi Zhi as brother-in-law, which finally earned Bi Zhi some face from Qiao Yue. However, Zhang Pu noticed that although Wei Shao acknowledged Bi Zhi as a brother-in-law, he still hadn’t acknowledged Qiao Yue. Madam Ding warmly welcomed Xiao Qiao and Da Qiao, constantly mindful of Xiao Qiao’s preferences.
Wei Shao was moved, realizing how Xiao Qiao had always been cared for at home, yet ever since following him, she had to be cautious and think only of him. This made him feel even more tender toward her. Xiao Qiao showed Wei Shao around her hometown. Wei Shao blamed himself for not doing better. He saw how free and happy Xiao Qiao was here, while Yu Commandery felt more like a cage. Xiao Qiao smiled and said she felt free and joyful as long as she was with Wei Shao.
