Zhao Zhen was talking with Liaozi when he vaguely heard someone approaching from outside, and still felt quite uneasy. These past few days, Zhao Zhen kept thinking of Zui Xinglai, but couldn't recall Zui Xinglai's appearance. He also recalled Zhao Huirou's appearance when she secretly ate candied fruits as a child, and when she threatened him. Liaozi advised Zhao Zhen not to take Zhao Huirou's angry words to heart.
But Zhao Zhen said that he wasn't afraid of Zhao Huirou resenting him; he was only afraid of her becoming obsessed. While they were talking, a palace maid entered to report to Zhao Zhen that Cao Danshu had an urgent matter and wished to see him. At the palace gate, Zhao Huirou knocked open the palace doors and returned to the palace amidst the heavy rain. Zhao Huirou rushed straight to Funing Hall, fell before Zhao Zhen, and wept bitterly.
Zhao Huirou went to wash up, and Miao Xinhe also rushed to Funing Hall. Zhao Huirou tearfully pleaded with Zhao Zhen to let her stay in the palace, saying that if she couldn't, she would rather die. She could no longer spend another moment with Li Wei; whenever she thought of Li Wei, she remembered him raising his hand to hit her.
When Zhao Zhen and Miao Xinhe heard that Li Wei had physically assaulted Zhao Huirou, they were both utterly shocked. Zhao Zhen, heartbroken for his daughter, was furious enough to want to kill Li Wei. Cao Danshu, however, felt something was amiss and wanted to call Liang Huaiji aside to clarify.
When Zhao Huirou saw Cao Danshu about to take Liang Huaiji away, she quickly shielded him, saying it had nothing to do with Liang Huaiji, and that she had been the one clinging to him all along. Zhao Zhen couldn't believe Zhao Huirou's words and stared at the two of them in disbelief. Zhao Huirou felt a little guilty and avoided Zhao Zhen's gaze.
Zhao Zhen wanted Zhao Huirou to go back and rest first, but Zhao Huirou refused to leave. She knelt before Zhao Zhen and tearfully recounted how Li Wei and Yang Shi had drugged her and subjected her to all sorts of humiliation, claiming that if it weren't for Liang Huaiji, she wouldn't have been able to see Zhao Zhen by now.
Zhao Zhen didn't listen to Zhao Huirou's explanation and instructed Ren Shouchong to escort Miao Xinhe and Zhao Huirou back to Yifeng Pavilion. Zhao Zhen warned Zhao Huirou that as long as she was well, those around her would naturally be fine. But if anything happened to her, he would be the first to severely punish everyone around her, leaving no one untouched. Only then did Zhao Huirou reluctantly leave.
After everyone left, Cao Danshu told Zhao Zhen that Zhao Huirou was very stubborn and had lived a very painful life after marrying into the Li family. Zhao Zhen couldn't believe it; he had originally thought Zhao Huirou would be very happy in the Li family. Cao Danshu advised Zhao Zhen to rest early, as Li Wei would surely come to the palace tomorrow.
The most important thing now was to prevent the matter from escalating and attracting the attention of the censors. The next morning, Li Wei knelt before the gate of Funing Hall to apologize to Zhao Zhen. Li Wei continuously admitted his mistakes before Zhao Zhen.
Zhao Zhen, unwilling to escalate the matter, did not harshly rebuke Li Wei, but merely told him to go back for now, saying that Zhao Huirou was feeling unwell and needed to stay in the palace to recuperate for a period. Li Wei worried that Zhao Huirou would no longer forgive him, but Zhao Zhen countered by asking Li Wei if he would blame Zhao Huirou.
Li Wei had loved Zhao Huirou since childhood, but he also knew that Zhao Huirou would never love him, and he would never become the person Zhao Huirou loved. Li Wei thought his calligraphy and painting were better than Liang Huaiji's, and believed Zhao Huirou would look at him with new respect because of it. But he later realized that Zhao Huirou didn't like calligraphy and painting; she simply liked Liang Huaiji.
As long as she was with Liang Huaiji, she was happy doing anything. The censors still learned about Zhao Huirou knocking on the palace gates at night. They successively submitted memorials to Zhao Zhen, advising him and implicitly criticizing both Zhao Zhen and Zhao Huirou. After Zhao Zhen finished talking with Li Wei, he went to Yifeng Pavilion and had Liang Huaiji read the ministers' memorials to Zhao Huirou.
Zhao Zhen told Zhao Huirou to recuperate well in Yifeng Pavilion, and that Liang Huaiji would follow him for these few days. Cao Danshu went to apologize to Yang Shi, and after returning to the palace, she went to Funing Hall to find Zhao Zhen. Zhao Zhen hurriedly asked what Yang Shi had said.
Cao Danshu replied that Yang Shi had wept and complained to her, but she had already hinted to Yang Shi not to escalate the matter, otherwise Li Wei would not be able to escape the charge of disrespecting his princess. Only then did Yang Shi promise not to tell anyone else about it.
Cao Danshu suggested to Zhao Zhen that Zhao Huirou should stay in the palace for a few days, then return to the princess's residence with Li Wei, and then provide funds for Li Wei to take a concubine, allowing both of them to have some peace for a period. If Zhao Huirou could develop some familial affection for Li Wei in the future, that would be for the best.
If not, then they should announce that Zhao Huirou was ill and bring her back to the palace for treatment. After hearing Cao Danshu's words, Zhao Zhen also felt there was no better solution, so he silently assented. Li Wei entered the palace again, wanting to take Zhao Huirou away. As soon as Zhao Huirou heard Li Wei had arrived, her emotions flared up, and she shrieked that she did not want to see him.
Cao Danshu said that Li Wei had already admitted his mistakes to Zhao Zhen, but Zhao Huirou refused to listen. She picked up a pair of scissors, intending to commit suicide. Miao Xinhe quickly snatched the scissors away. Zhao Huirou wept in Miao Xinhe's arms, saying she would rather die than go back. Miao Xinhe felt heartbroken for her daughter and declared that she would not let Zhao Huirou leave.
When Zhao Zhen arrived at Yifeng Pavilion, Miao Xinhe, who was usually gentle and benevolent, disregarded all rules and etiquette upon seeing Zhao Huirou in such agony. She looked at Zhao Zhen resolutely and threatened that if he insisted on sending Zhao Huirou away, then she and Zhao Huirou would go together to reunite with Zui Xinglai.
Zhao Zhen found it difficult to further pressure the two of them, so he told Li Wei not to rush, but to return to his residence and wait patiently. Li Wei had no choice but to leave. Inside Yifeng Pavilion, Zhao Huirou leaned in Miao Xinhe's arms, saying she didn't want to go back and wished to stay in the palace forever.
Miao Xinhe promised Zhao Huirou that she would surely find a way to persuade Zhao Zhen and Cao Danshu. At this time, Ren Shouchong came to Yifeng Pavilion to check on Zhao Huirou's condition. Miao Xinhe explained Zhao Huirou's situation to Ren Shouchong and asked him to also persuade Zhao Zhen, ideally to let the couple divorce.
Although Ren Shouchong sympathized with Zhao Huirou, he knew that the marriage between Zhao Huirou and Li Wei was personally arranged by Zhao Zhen, and at that time, all civil and military officials had unanimously approved it. If Zhao Zhen were to step forward and propose a divorce, the censors would surely submit remonstrances.
