Most Xinglai is gravely ill in Yifeng Pavilion with a persistent high fever, causing concern among medical officers who stay by his bed, fearing a relapse. Zhao Zhen, trusting Liang Huaiji's kind and loyal nature, sends him to Yifeng Pavilion to care for Most Xinglai. Liang Huaiji also delivers clothes to Zhao Huirou, who is waiting for news of Most Xinglai.
She initially mistakes Liang Huaiji's arrival as a sign that Zhao Zhen knows of Most Xinglai's illness and is disappointed when he hasn't come. Liang Huaiji accompanies Zhao Huirou, who is restless and cannot sleep. He patiently explains what poverty means to her, and after comparing various people around her, Zhao Huirou, unsure whether Zhang Bihan, with Zhao Zhen's favor, or Cao Danshu, with her empress status, is poorer, eventually drifts off to sleep.
The next morning, Cao Danshu visits Yifeng Pavilion. Liang Huaiji, who had stayed with Zhao Huirou overnight, reports discovering a lump on Zhao Huirou's neck. Cao Danshu and Miao Xinhe have medical officers examine it. It is identified as a tick bite, from which the head physician carefully removes the blood-sucking insect and disinfects the wound. The physician explains that the tick releases toxins, and the illness can be mild, causing pain for a few days, or severe.
Zhao Huirou remembers that Most Xinglai also rolled in the grass with her, prompting Cao Danshu to immediately order a full check for bites on Most Xinglai. Cao Danshu fears Most Xinglai has contracted an epidemic disease from the tick bites. Zhao Huirou, worried about Most Xinglai, initially feels that Zhao Zhen only cares for Zhang Bihan, and thinks he treats Zhang Bihan's residence like Funing Palace, staying there daily.
Miao Xinhe reassuringly explains that Zhao Zhen shows his concern by promptly sending favored items from the Funing Palace storeroom. Later, Cao Danshu specifically waits for Zhao Zhen after court. Zhao Zhen, excited by her unexpected wait, initially discusses state affairs. Cao Danshu then reports that Most Xinglai may have contracted an epidemic disease from the tick bites, and Zhao Huirou has also been bitten, though her symptoms haven't manifested yet.
Zhao Zhen learns this epidemic might be similar to one his uncle contracted in the military during Tiansheng 5. He blames Cao Danshu for not informing him sooner and insists on visiting Most Xinglai and Zhao Huirou in Yifeng Pavilion. Cao Danshu, however, adamantly prevents him, deeming it too risky due to the infectious nature of the disease. She states she will personally move into Yifeng Pavilion with Miao Xinhe to care for them.
To further persuade Zhao Zhen, she prepares an edict for her self-deposition, stating he can depose her if Most Xinglai and Zhao Huirou succumb to the illness, and then he could install another empress. Faced with Cao Danshu's resolute stance, emphasizing national welfare, Zhao Zhen eventually compromises. The head physician later reports Most Xinglai's condition is critical and dangerous, requiring extreme caution from attendants, while Zhao Huirou's prognosis will take a few days to confirm.
Miao Xinhe is anxious, and Cao Danshu supports her, promising to arrange more palace staff through Ren Shouzong. Meanwhile, Zhang Bihan, whose complexion has improved, is visited by Zhao Zhen in Xiangluan Pavilion. She pleads with him regarding Wang Gongchen, asking him not to punish him, specifically not to execute or banish him, for Xue Yuhu's sake, as Xue Yuhu is her only friend.
Zhao Zhen agrees not to banish Wang Gongchen, allowing Xue Yuhu to visit, but warns Zhang Bihan against discussing court affairs or seeking favoritism based on private feelings, expecting her not to repeat this. Zhang Bihan is touched, believing in Zhao Zhen's sincerity, and vows to recover and stay with him for life.
Meanwhile, Jia Yulan tries to console Zhang Bihan and make her forget past unhappiness, but Zhang Bihan remains fixated on finding the palace maid who fled during Yao Yao's illness, promising promotions to anyone who helps her locate the maid outside the palace. Zhang Maoze informs Shi Jie and Fu Bi that they are accused of plotting treason through their correspondence. Shi Jie is enraged, proclaiming his loyalty to Zhao Zhen and anger at the false accusation.
Fu Bi, in his study, calmly contemplates the situation. His wife, Yan Qingsu, is anxious and suggests he consult Fan Zhongyan or seek help from Yan Shu and Cao Danshu. Fu Bi refuses, explaining it would solidify the charge of forming factions and worsen his plight. Yan Qingsu worries Zhao Zhen might believe the accusations and cries, urging Fu Bi to consider their children.
Fu Bi decides against actively defending himself, planning instead to request a transfer out of the capital at the morning court to avoid being embroiled in the political turmoil of official reforms and factional disputes. At morning court, Zhao Zhen agrees to Fan Zhongyan's request for an external transfer, also assigning him a new important task. Su Zimei and Ouyang Xiu attempt to persuade Zhao Zhen to revoke the decision but are unsuccessful.
Zhao Zhen then orders Fu Bi to inspect Shaanxi, which Fu Bi immediately accepts, thus achieving his desired move out of the capital without having to formally request it. After these announcements, Zhao Zhen summons Wang Gongchen, who has been waiting outside, having not dared to appear in court. Zhao Zhen scolds Wang Gongchen for forcing his hand (implicitly through a hunger strike), and warns him against seeking fame and reputation, urging him to conduct himself properly.
