Receiving medicine from Ke'er, Rong Le urgently pressed her for news of Rong Qi. Under her persistent questioning, Ke'er revealed that Rong Qi had neutralized the Destined Poison within Rong Le using a method recorded in a tome: "blood for blood, a life for a life." Lin Shen impatiently urged Hen Xiang to proceed. Hen Xiang swiftly cut the rope, freeing the infant, and seized the cradle.
As Lin Shen attempted to snatch the child, Wu You intervened, protecting Hen Xiang and the baby. Lin Shen then gravely wounded Hen Xiang with a palm strike. Despite her injuries, Hen Xiang struggled to hand her baby to Zongzheng Yunhe. Meanwhile, Lin Shen fired a hidden arrow, striking Fu Chou, who was momentarily distracted. Fu Chou managed to take the other child from Wu You and also passed the baby to his father, Zongzheng Yunhe.
He then stumbled to Hen Xiang's side, commending her for doing very well and protecting both children. Hen Xiang, with a smile, told Fu Chou she would find him again in her next life, to which he replied, "In your next life, don't meet me anymore." She then collapsed and died in his arms. Wu You engaged Lin Shen in a fierce combat.
Lin Shen attempted a surprise attack with a sleeve arrow, but Wu You, anticipating the move, evaded the blow. Wu You then thrust his sword into Lin Shen's abdomen and kicked him away. Lin Shen fell, striking his head against a stone step, and died. Wu You rushed to Fu Chou's side, observing the black blood that stained his hand. Fu Chou weakly murmured his daughter's name, "Nian," before losing consciousness.
Wu You watched Fu Chou and Hen Xiang, who lay together in death, and vowed that he would take good care of their child. A voiceover revealed Fu Chou's final thoughts, that he and Wu You no longer owed each other, and that a ray of light had fortunately entered his life before hatred consumed him completely. Wu Xiangzi and Wu Yu arrived with their disciples, taking the children. Zongzheng Yunhe suddenly coughed blood and collapsed.
He told his sons that he knew his life was ending and had held on to his last breath to wait for them. He confessed that all the sins should be borne by him alone, explaining that his ambition to rebuild the country led him to manipulate others' feelings, resulting in his sons destroying each other and their children becoming innocent victims.
He implored Wu You and Wu Yu to remember his mistake and never fail the people of their country in the future. In his final moments, Zongzheng Yunhe whispered "Yun'er," seemingly seeing someone come to take him away, and then passed away. Fu Yuan, consumed by grief over her son's death, saw Zongzheng Yunhe's body and screamed that it was his karma. Wu You confronted her, demanding to know where Rong Le was.
Fu Yuan taunted him, claiming that Rong Le was dead. Wu You refused to believe this, demanding her return, even as one of his men reported that the palace had been searched for Rong Le without success, though the search continued. At that moment, a distraught Rong Le appeared, walking slowly as if in a daze. She saw the bodies of Hen Xiang and Fu Chou embracing in death and burst into tears.
Her focus then shifted, and she began to approach Rong Qi's body, calling out for him. Fu Yuan stepped in front of Rong Le, angrily questioning why she was still alive when her son, Rong Qi, was dead. She lamented that despite her meticulous efforts over twenty years to prolong his life with precious medicine, Rong Qi was gone, implying Rong Le was the cause.
Rong Le, seemingly ignoring Fu Yuan, spoke directly to Rong Qi's body, asking why he was still there. She believed he remained out of fear that his mother would hinder Ke'er from removing the poison from her. She acknowledged that he had given her his blood and life, and even his dead body was being used to protect her, expressing deep regret for having forgotten him. Enraged, Fu Yuan shoved Rong Le, declaring her unworthy.
She revealed that Rong Le should have died from the Scorpion Toxin long ago, and only Rong Qi's secret placement of heart-protecting medicine in her snacks prevented her death, leaving her only with white hair. Fu Yuan questioned if Rong Le knew what punishment Rong Qi endured for saving her. Rong Le condemned Fu Yuan as an unworthy mother.
Fu Yuan retorted that her own actions were nothing, and the physical pain Rong Qi suffered paled in comparison to the heartache he felt when he learned Rong Le had fallen in love with Wu You, forcing him to give her away and endure her hatred. Wu You, stepping forward to prevent Rong Le from feeling guilty, directed his anger towards Fu Yuan.
He acknowledged that his father had wronged her in the past, but pointed out that his mother had forgiven her, Fu Chou had respected and cared for her, and even Man Yao had helped her. He accused Fu Yuan of harming countless people and nearly inciting war between nations for her personal hatred, emphasizing that while reprisal breeds reprisal, the people are innocent.
He stated that she should have expected this end when she allowed herself to be consumed by hatred. Fu Yuan, dismissing their words as fake and insincere, declared that she had nothing left. Uttering that she had no reason to live, she walked towards a nearby bonfire and ended her life, bringing her twisted, hatred-filled existence to a close. Rong Le pulled away from Wu You, slowly approaching Rong Qi's body.
With trembling hands, she gently closed his eyes before tenderly leaning into his embrace. She felt that if she had a choice, she would willingly give her life away, but destiny offered her none. As she accepted her fate, a voiceover of Rong Qi played, a memory or final message in which he blessed her, acknowledging he could not bring her happiness himself.
He asked her not to forgive him and to continue hating him, believing that if she hated him, she would not be too sad when he left. Wu You ordered that Fu Chou and Hen Xiang be buried together. At Fu Chou's tomb, Wu You played a melody on a flute, explaining that his mother taught him the song and would play it when thinking of her other lost child.
He expressed regret that Fu Chou never heard it while alive, hoping it brought comfort now. Leng Yan reported to Wu You that Rong Le remained unwilling to leave Western Qi, describing her as quiet, often sitting alone in the tearoom or wandering the Cold Harem. Wu You instructed him not to disturb her, acknowledging that no one could erase their past or the deep hatred etched in their hearts.
He reflected that a few years prior, he might have forced her to leave, but he now understood that everyone, including Rong Le, would eventually realize that letting go of stubborn attachments was a form of self-compassion. Leng Yan then informed Wu You that the late Emperor of Qi, Rong Qi, had one final request. Xiao Xunzi approached, delivering a personal letter from Rong Qi, instructing that it be given only to Wu You.
In the letter, Rong Qi acknowledged his impending death and expressed a few regrets. He stated that although he and Wu You were not close, Wu You was the only one he could truly rely on. Rong Qi then addressed his mother's sins, stating that as her son, he would repay them with his life, hoping her victims could forgive her and release their hatred.
He wrote that his destiny with Rong Le had ended long ago and that she loved only Wu You. He asked Wu You to uphold his promise to cherish and love her forever. Lastly, expressing concern for Western Qi's impoverished and suffering people, he feared his death might lead to the nation's collapse and asked Wu You to care for them as a benevolent ruler. Five years later, Rong Le continued to reside near Rong Qi's tomb.
Xiao Sha thanked her for caring for Rong Qi's memorial all these years, expressing his guilt. He said that if he had believed Rong Qi's insistence on taking Rong Le away in Chen—when Rong Qi had found the other half of the Lone Frost Sage's medical book—things might have turned out differently. Rong Le reassured him that he was not to blame, as destiny was ultimately about the choices one makes.
She reflected that some sacrificed their children, while others, like Rong Qi, sacrificed themselves for others. Knowing his life was short from birth, he understood and empathized with the world's suffering, willing to sacrifice himself for others' well-being. Xiao Sha then left her to speak with Rong Qi alone. Rong Le spoke to the tomb, noting that this year's greengage wine was sweeter than before.
She expressed her hope that in his next life, Rong Qi would finally achieve his wish of being an ordinary person, free from illness, and living a simple, happy life with the one he loved. Now, she felt ready to let go of her lingering grief. Rong Le journeyed by carriage back to Zhongshan. As the carriage neared the city gate, she recalled her first arrival in Western Qi, remembering the cold reception she received.
She then heard the familiar sound of a xun. The carriage stopped, and she stepped out to find Wu You waiting for her. Wu You declared his long wait had finally ended. Rong Le began to speak of the years that passed, but Wu You gently silenced her, affirming that he understood. Their eyes met, and they shared a joyful embrace, finally reunited.
At the Yu and Ke Apothecary House, Wu Yu lamented the decreasing number of people seeking treatment, enjoying his idle life. Ke'er teased him, suggesting he simply wanted to visit public houses daily, to which Wu Yu responded with playful feigned jealousy, claiming his dedication to her and the apothecary house. With the coronation two days away, Ke'er questioned if he intended to remain a commoner rather than returning to the palace as a prince.
Before Wu Yu could fully answer, women from a nearby public house recognized and called out to "Prince Chen," infuriating Ke'er. Wu Yu took the opportunity to formally ask Ke'er when she would marry him. Ke'er blushed, denying she ever promised anything, but Wu You and Rong Le, who had arrived, playfully supported Wu Yu. Rong Le reminded Ke'er that Ying'er had called her "aunt" for years without correction.
Rong Le then proposed a game: if Wu Yu could correctly guess which hand Ke'er was holding a flower in, she would marry him. Wu Yu, feigning deep thought, covertly received a signal from Rong Le and confidently guessed the right hand. Though Ke'er tried to renege, claiming he cheated, Wu Yu joyfully scooped her up and spun her around.
At the School of Wisdom, Luo Yan began class by introducing "The Book of Mountains and Rivers," a book believed to contain military schemes that could grant power, which had once drawn Prince Li and his consort together. She noted that those consumed by power did not realize that over a decade later, the world had changed. Ying'er and Nian'er pointed out that their copies of the book were blank.
Wu You then entered and explained that the original book, for which many had fought, only contained simple landscape drawings and poems. He revealed it was a drawing book his own father used to teach him and his sister, naming it "The Book of Mountains and Rivers" to inspire them with aspirations as vast as mountains and rivers. A false rumor then spread, causing widespread conflict.
Wu You clarified that his late teacher, Qin Yong, believed in strengthening the country through generosity, courage, knowledge, and wisdom. Thus, the blank books given to the children were for them to fill with their own aspirations and bold visions as they grew up. Rong Le reminded the children to study well before she and Wu You departed.
On the day of the coronation, amidst the chants of officials, Wu You and Rong Le, adorned in imperial robes, ascended the throne. A voiceover by Wu You reflected on their journey: he considered it unlucky that they were caught in a chaotic world and others' schemes, yet fortunate that they could lay the foundation for peace while holding onto their aspirations. He mused that there was no absolute destiny, as one's fate was ultimately determined by oneself.
Some were helpless, some betrayed themselves, and some were lost to darkness, yet others came to their senses, explored, or sacrificed themselves. Wu You expressed his hope that from this moment forward, he and Rong Le would remain together until they were old and gray, steadfastly walking the path they had chosen, hand in hand.
