The Emperor of Northern Lin, deciding to personally lead the upcoming war against Wei and strike first, sought recommendations for a trusted general to accompany him. Prince Wu Yu immediately suggested Prince Wu You, praising his extensive study of military strategy. The Crown Prince, however, objected, arguing that Wu You lacked battle experience and a seasoned general would be a better choice.
When pressed for a name, the Crown Prince glanced at General Fu Chou, who subtly indicated his reluctance, and instead deferred to Fu Chou's opinion. Surprisingly, General Fu Chou strongly endorsed Prince Wu You, commending his leadership in the southern border war and his deep understanding of military situations. Pleased, the Emperor was about to appoint Wu You when Wu You loudly refused.
He declared that Northern Lin was suffering from both internal and external strife—rampant piracy, covetous neighbors, continuous natural calamities, financial strain, and famine in the Southwest. He argued that the nation should focus on recuperation before engaging in foreign wars. Infuriated, the Emperor denied these problems and accused Wu You of spreading alarm.
As guards moved to escort him out, Wu You lashed out, stating that the Emperor lived in his palace, oblivious to the people's suffering, and was incapable of being a brilliant ruler. Enraged by this insolence, the Emperor called him an "unfilial son" and banished him to the southern border. Wu You defiantly declared he never cared to be there and would never return.
Seeing the escalating conflict, Prince Fanyang intervened, suggesting General Fu Chou accompany the Emperor instead, citing his extensive battlefield experience. The Emperor immediately agreed, commanding Fu Chou to prepare for war in three days and announcing that the Crown Prince would manage state affairs, assisted by Prince Wu Yu. The Master of the Creed of Vengeance was astonished to learn that Fu Chou would join the Emperor's campaign.
Fu Chou explained that the Emperor had mobilized 300,000 soldiers but deliberately excluded his Armour Troops, ordering him to go alone, a move whose intention was obvious. The Master urged Fu Chou to accelerate their plan, stressing it must not be altered. He then accused Fu Chou of considering changing their long-standing plan for Rong Le and for injuring one of their own to save her.
To punish Fu Chou and remind him of his duty, the Master subjected him to intense "bone-piercing pain," meant to echo his mother's suffering. After Fu Chou left, the Master instructed a reluctant Hen Xiang to disguise herself as Rong Le for a part of his plan. When she refused, the Master threatened her, stating that her compliance was necessary for her own family's revenge and might help her achieve her personal desires.
Hen Xiang had no choice but to submit. Prince Fanyang expressed his concern to the Emperor that while Fu Chou was on the expedition, his Armour Troops remained in Zhongshan. He also pointed out a suspicious influx of refugees into the city, suggesting the war be delayed.
The Emperor reassured him, explaining that he had countermeasures: the Royal Army was in the capital, and a secret decree entrusted Prince Wu Yu with their command should the Armour Troops make any suspicious moves. He added that the Armour Troop generals were already under Wu You's close surveillance and that Wu You, despite his apparent banishment, would handle the refugee situation.
Prince Fanyang then realized the dramatic confrontation in court between the Emperor and Wu You was a meticulously staged act to secure Zhongshan from all threats. Unaware of the full plan, Prince Wu Yu still tried to convince Wu You to join the war, fearing Fu Chou would gain all the military glory. Wu You explained that Fu Chou had amassed significant influence, forming alliances, colluding with the Crown Prince, and even cooperating with Emperor Rong Qi of Western Qi.
He revealed that the generals in the Armour Troops were Fu Chou's loyal confidantes and that if he were to join the war, leaving the capital to Fu Chou and the Crown Prince would be catastrophic. Wu Yu finally grasped the intricate intentions of the Emperor and Wu You, who confirmed the staged fight was meant to deceive Fu Chou.
Wu You then instructed Wu Yu to monitor the Crown Prince and to manage the refugee situation by luring them out of the city with food relief and discreetly observing them for suspicious individuals. He also asked Wu Yu to look after Rong Le in his absence. Meanwhile, Xiao Sha observed General Fu Chou secretly meeting with generals of the Royal Army at his manor.
He returned to find Princess Rong Le taking medicine and tried to defend Emperor Rong Qi, but Rong Le dismissed him, convinced her brother was poisoning her to control her. Xiao Sha suggested obtaining the medicine so Xiao Ke could analyze it and find a cure. Rong Le found the idea compelling. When Xiao Sha informed her of Fu Chou's clandestine meetings, she immediately suspected a major conspiracy.
She resolved to infiltrate Fu Chou's study and instructed Xiao Sha to return to Western Qi to tell Rong Qi she was on her deathbed and needed the antidote immediately if he still wished for her to serve him. Later, Xiao Ke, feigning being lost, subtly incapacitated the guards outside Fu Chou's study. Rong Le entered while Ling Yue stood lookout. Inside, Rong Le noticed a candle stub, deducing that Fu Chou and his cohorts had been plotting all night.
She then discovered a "Zhongshan City Distribution Map for Armed Forces" hidden inside a flute in the desk's secret compartment. As Xiao Ke urgently signaled from outside, Rong Le quickly memorized the map. Seeing Fu Chou approaching, Ling Yue cleverly cried out that Rong Le had fainted. As expected, Fu Chou immediately rushed towards Tranquil Garden. When Fu Chou arrived, he found Xiao Ke attending to a seemingly unconscious Rong Le.
Xiao Ke claimed Rong Le's condition required a rare "Dragon Flower" that only she could recognize and requested permission to leave the manor to find it. Vigilant, Fu Chou refused, instructing her to write down the herb's name for his men to retrieve. As he spoke, Fu Chou realized Rong Le was feigning unconsciousness. He warned her against trying to escape, implying that staying in the manor was her safest option, as the world outside was under their control.
After Fu Chou departed, Rong Le immediately instructed Ling Yue to fetch a white handkerchief so she could draw the memorized troop distribution map. Fu Chou then went to meet the Crown Prince, who was sullenly drinking, still angry at Fu Chou for recommending Wu You but relieved that the Emperor had banished him.
Fu Chou, seeing the Crown Prince's misguided complacency, revealed that the conflict between the Emperor and Wu You was a charade, and Wu You remaining in the capital was their gravest danger. The Crown Prince scoffed, but Fu Chou elaborated on the Emperor's strategy: forcing Fu Chou to war without his troops, banishing Wu You to secretly mobilize forces, and assigning Wu Yu to spy on the Crown Prince.
Any misstep would be branded as rebellion, allowing Wu You's army to storm the capital and ensure the Crown Prince's demise. Terrified, the Crown Prince pleaded for help. Fu Chou then presented him with a dragon robe, stating that "self-salvation"—a true rebellion—was their only option. Faced with Fu Chou's manipulation, the Crown Prince fell into the trap. He resolved to take the risk, promising Fu Chou anything he desired, save for the throne, if they succeeded.
After Fu Chou left, the Crown Prince clutched the robe, imagining himself as Emperor and laughing triumphantly. Hen Xiang then appeared and flattered him, further solidifying his resolve. The Crown Prince, intoxicated by her praise, confided his frustrations and promised Hen Xiang the title of Imperial Consort once he secured the throne. Finally, the day of departure arrived, and the Emperor set forth for Wei with General Fu Chou and the army.
Immediately after, Xiao Ke and Ling Yue began a loud, feigned argument, claiming Rong Le's illness had worsened dramatically. Xiao Ke insisted that only she could save Rong Le by personally collecting a rare "Dragon Flower," detailing its unique characteristics and the precise, dangerous method of harvesting it. Faced with the urgency and the complex claims, the guards permitted Xiao Ke to leave the manor with an escort, while Ling Yue remained behind, praying for her success.
