Royal Princess Zhao Yun willingly accepted a marriage alliance with Ning Qian Yi, Prince Zhenbei of Chen, but pleaded with the Emperor to pardon Prince Wu Yu. The Emperor declared that Wu Yu's actions were a grave defiance of the law and deserved severe punishment. However, considering Wu Yu's injury, he leniently ordered him to be caned fifty times and imprisoned in the Supreme Court.
The Emperor promised that once Princess Zhao Yun safely crossed the Northern Lin border, Wu Yu would be released, and the matter would no longer be pursued. Before her departure, Zhao Yun sought a final meeting with Wu Yu, hoping to sever his affections. Visiting him in jail, she informed him of her decision to marry. A furious Wu Yu immediately questioned if she was coerced, but Zhao Yun insisted her choice was voluntary.
She explained that unlike Wu Yu, who was unable to protect her when she needed him most, Prince Zhenbei could offer her true reliance. She aspired to become the empress of Chen, wielding ultimate power, ensuring she would never again suffer humiliation or disdain. As Zhao Yun departed, Wu Yu was left heartbroken, unaware that her decision to leave him was the bravest yet most painful choice of her life.
General Fu Chou received an urgent summons from the Crown Prince, who wished to meet him at the House of Fragrance. Upon his arrival, Fu Chou found the Crown Prince playing blindfolded with several women. The Crown Prince's demeanor immediately soured upon seeing Fu Chou, and he publicly chastised the general, accusing him of hypocrisy and calling him a "wolf in sheep's skin." Unwilling to tolerate the Crown Prince's disrespectful behavior, Fu Chou attempted to leave.
The Crown Prince, however, persisted, forcing Fu Chou to assert himself and push him back. After the others withdrew, Fu Chou admitted his rudeness during their previous encounter was due to acting in haste. He also asserted that the Crown Prince had backed him into a corner, leading him to lose control. Eventually, they reached a fragile understanding. The Crown Prince then raised the matter of Princess Zhao Yun's impending marriage alliance.
Fu Chou revealed he had devised a plan to achieve two objectives simultaneously, noting that Zongzheng Wu You was currently responsible for all alliance affairs, including Princess Zhao Yun's safety at the inn that very night. The Crown Prince instantly grasped Fu Chou's intentions. Back at his manor, Fu Chou's attendant informed him that Lady Rong Le intended to visit Princess Zhao Yun at the inn with Miss Sun, expressing concern that her presence might jeopardize the night's plan.
Despite these worries, when Rong Le formally requested permission to visit Zhao Yun, Fu Chou readily agreed. His unexpected consent surprised and deeply touched Rong Le, who was grateful for his understanding. Meanwhile, Wu You had already deployed a substantial force at the inn, ensuring Princess Zhao Yun's absolute safety. On the eve of her departure to Chen, Zhao Yun's thoughts were consumed by her memories with Wu Yu. Witnessing her despondency, Wu You felt a pang of guilt.
Zhao Yun, however, comforted him, expressing gratitude for his unwavering support in all her difficulties. She proclaimed her life to be without regret, having such a wonderful brother, and only wished that he would continue to advise Wu Yu after she was gone. Wu You agreed, then handed Zhao Yun a small box from Wu Yu containing the grass ring he had given her when he first proposed, meant to wish her a lifetime of happiness.
Rong Le and Ya Li arrived to visit Zhao Yun. A brief, awkward glance passed between Wu You and Rong Le, but Zhao Yun was overjoyed to see Rong Le. When Ya Li stumbled while attempting to engage Wu You in conversation, he quickly helped her to a room to rest, leaving Rong Le and Zhao Yun alone.
Rong Le apologized for her inability to help Zhao Yun avoid the marriage, but Zhao Yun assured her there was no need for regret. She confessed that she now understood the complex feelings between Rong Le and Wu You. She reflected on Wu You's deep love for Rong Le, a love he chose to safeguard from afar rather than force, which made it all the more precious.
Zhao Yun revealed that Wu You was once a carefree, cheerful boy, more playful even than Wu Yu. However, after the sudden death of his mother, Lady Yun, when he was seven, he barricaded himself in Yun's Tomb, refusing to eat or drink, nearly dying. This traumatic event profoundly changed him, making him cold and detached.
Zhao Yun explained that Wu You's past actions, such as disrupting Rong Le's wedding and staying in Qingzhou for over half a year, were all proofs of his true love, though his long-encased heart struggled to express it. Zhao Yun urged Rong Le to seize any chance, no matter how slim, to find happiness with Wu You, believing only she could bring true joy to him.
A physician arrived to tend to Ya Li's leg, and Hen Xiang, disguised as a medicine apprentice, slipped into the inn. Once Rong Le had left Zhao Yun’s room, Hen Xiang, now disguised as Rong Le, knocked on Zhao Yun's door. The moment Zhao Yun opened it, Hen Xiang lunged forward, choking her and forcing her onto the bed. In the ensuing struggle, Zhao Yun knocked over a candle stand.
The commotion alerted Rong Le in the adjacent room, who immediately rushed over. Pushing open Zhao Yun's door, she was horrified to see an exact duplicate of herself strangling Zhao Yun. Hen Xiang, seeing the real Rong Le, remained unfazed, though the accompanying Ya Li was utterly astonished. As Rong Le engaged Hen Xiang in a fight, Wu You, alerted by the disturbance, arrived. Faced with two identical Rong Les, even his usual composure faltered.
Hen Xiang swiftly broke away and ran to Wu You, pleading for him to save her. However, Rong Le urgently rushed to extinguish the fallen candle flames that were dangerously close to Zhao Yun. This crucial action immediately made Wu You realize who the true Rong Le was. Knowing her disguise was exposed, Hen Xiang turned to fight Wu You but quickly fled after a few exchanges.
After the commotion, the shaken Zhao Yun urged Rong Le to help Wu You investigate the assassin's identity, with Ya Li supporting her plea. Wu You then asked Rong Le to speak with him privately outside. Rong Le informed him that the assassin was a master of disguise who had successfully impersonated her to deceive Zhao Yun, proving to be a formidable opponent, likely from the Creed of Vengeance.
Wu You, contemplating the dangers surrounding Rong Le since her return to the capital, expressed deep worry that one misstep could lead to disaster, regretting that he hadn't protected her adequately. He then revealed that his year and a half in Qingzhou was not only to forget past grievances but also due to a secret imperial decree to investigate the frequent revolts in the southern border.
He confided in her about confronting death on the battlefield and defending against both overt and covert attacks, having discovered scholars colluding with rebels to exploit the people. Wu You stated his intention to keep no more secrets from her. He promised not to force her, accepting her marriage to General Fu Chou as long as she was living well, and vowed to protect her. To further ensure her safety, he presented her with the Shadowless Tower fan.
Leng Yan pursued Hen Xiang but was intercepted by a mysterious black-clad figure. Together, the two overwhelmed Leng Yan, allowing Hen Xiang to escape. Fu Chou dragged Hen Xiang to an inn in the eastern suburbs, where he angrily removed her human-skin mask. He demanded to know why she had impersonated Rong Le, warning her that such a reckless act could ruin their entire plan.
Hen Xiang, undeterred, defiantly asked if Fu Chou was afraid Rong Le would discover his true identity. Enraged, Fu Chou grabbed Hen Xiang's throat, warning her never to involve Rong Le or jeopardize the plan with her selfish motives. He commanded her to return to the Crown Prince and keep a close watch on him. Hen Xiang confessed her despair at having to stay by the Crown Prince's side, questioning if Fu Chou ever considered her feelings.
Fu Chou acknowledged her difficulties but insisted that their actions must serve the greater good, assuring her he would free her once the plan was complete. Nevertheless, he declared that her selfish actions had caused the mission's failure, and according to protocol, she would be punished with a caning. Each lash fueled Hen Xiang's deep-seated hatred for Rong Le, intensifying it to an unyielding degree.
Upon Fu Chou's return to his manor, his attendant informed him of an imperial decree ordering him to escort Princess Zhao Yun to Chen the following day. Fu Chou immediately realized that Wu You, having suspected his involvement in the inn's assassination attempt, had deliberately assigned him this task. This placed Fu Chou in a difficult position, making it impossible for him to harm Princess Zhao Yun without facing direct blame.
The next morning, Fu Chou arrived at the inn with a large escort. Wu You was waiting at the entrance and immediately confronted Fu Chou, asking his opinion on those who were painstakingly trying to prevent the alliance between Northern Lin and Chen. Their exchange was filled with veiled barbs and thinly disguised animosity, on the verge of escalating into a direct confrontation, when Prince Ning Qian Yi emerged from the inn, diffusing the tension.
Ning Qian Yi addressed Fu Chou, confirming the Emperor's order for Fu Chou to escort him and Princess Zhao Yun to the border, entrusting their safety to him during the journey.
