Out Of The Dream Episode 3 Recap
> Out Of The Dream Recap
Bai Feili received a voice message from Guan Jiu, informing him that she had reserved a table for him for seven o'clock that night. Guan Jiu warned that if he failed to resolve the matter of finding an actress for the role of Liu Xichan this time, he would have to follow her instructions. Meanwhile, Yu Fei and her mother, Yan Peishan, arrived at an opera house.
They were told there were no additional seats, and Yan Peishan complained about someone named Xiao Dao being unreliable. However, an usher soon directed them to special pool seats, which Yu Fei realized were reserved by Bai Feili. Upon meeting Yan Peishan, Bai Feili introduced himself as Yu Fei's official boyfriend, surprising Yu Fei but delighting her mother.
He explained that since he heard Yan Peishan liked opera, providing them with the best seats was his way of showing respect, as their first meeting was a bit rushed. Yu Fei, still displeased, tried to return the ticket money and reiterated her refusal to perform in his play, but Bai Feili declined the money, reminding her that she owed him a favor, implying she should repay it by taking on the role of Liu Xichan.
During the performance, Yan Peishan enthusiastically volunteered Yu Fei to sing "Dream In Peony Pavilion: An Enchanting Dream" on stage, a request Yu Fei couldn't refuse without disappointing her mother. Separately, at Hao Shi's home, his mother discovered a stash of his comic books. Upon his arrival, she insisted he consume various brain-boosting foods like walnuts, wolfberries, and black sesame paste. Hao Shi, desperate to avoid the lecture, abruptly announced that his teacher was arriving for a home visit.
The "teacher" turned out to be Guan Jiu, disguised as his head teacher, there to discuss college applications. Hao Shi's mother expressed her desire for him to pursue a business major but acknowledged the intense competition. Guan Jiu subtly steered the conversation, suggesting that a business major with aspirations for overseas education might be too financially demanding for a family with only one property.
Instead, she proposed fashion design, particularly costume design for stage plays, as a promising career within the burgeoning cultural creative industry, especially since Hao Shi’s family ran a garment factory. Hao Shi’s father interrupted, asking about the ninth volume of a specific comic book, to which Guan Jiu eagerly provided details about the plot, revealing her shared interest in comics. This exchange, along with their detailed discussion, quickly made Hao Shi's mother realize Guan Jiu's true identity.
Later, after the opera, Hao Shi’s mother scolded him for inviting Guan Jiu and firmly stated that he could forget about pursuing an art education. Back at the opera house, Yu Fei, dressed in costume, was surprised to see Bai Feili also in costume, ready to assist her.
He explained that it was his way of fulfilling her mother's wish and continuing his role as her "boyfriend" for the day, which he claimed was necessary to be able to drive her mother home and learn her address. Yu Fei reaffirmed her refusal to perform in his "South Song" play. Bai Feili, undeterred, simply stated he had already agreed to perform "An Enchanting Dream" with her.
Before they went on stage, Yu Fei mentioned knowing the lyrics and having some opera experience. Bai Feili instructed her to start singing after he gave her three beats. Their performance together impressed the audience, and Yu Fei's mother shed tears of pride and happiness, complimenting their singing. Afterwards, when Yu Fei tried to leave on foot, Bai Feili insisted his driver, Uncle Chen, take her mother home while he walked with Yu Fei.
Yu Fei thanked him for helping with the performance, noting how long it had been since her mother heard her sing, but she again rejected his offer to join "South Song." Bai Feili followed her home, hoping she might reconsider, and gave her his business card, promising a "considerable" salary and that he would wait for her decision until six o'clock the next afternoon. Yu Fei questioned why he, among many talented opera singers, was so persistent about her.
Bai Feili explained that he had searched many opera troupes and theaters but found no one suitable for the role of Liu Xichan until he heard Yu Fei sing "The Dragon Meets the Phoenix" at Shandengting. He believed that, like Liu Xichan, Yu Fei possessed a strong passion and pursuit, and her opera skills were the perfect expression of Liu Xichan's unique character. Yu Fei confessed that she had given up on that passion.
Bai Feili then described "South Song" as partially a love story: a scholar repeatedly dreams of Liu Xichan over three lifetimes, always falling in love with her despite their changing identities and eras. When Yu Fei asked about the ending, Bai Feili said she would discover it when she took the role. As they looked up at the sky, an osmanthus petal fell.
After saying goodbye to Bai Feili, Yu Fei returned home and found her mother collapsed on the floor. She immediately rushed her to the hospital. The next day, Bai Feili and Guan Jiu discussed the "South Song" production. Guan Jiu observed osmanthus petals in Bai Feili's hair, playfully suggesting it symbolized "companionship with your beloved." Later that morning, Guan Jiu, growing impatient, suggested calling another actress, Lingjiu, but Bai Feili insisted on waiting.
At ten o'clock, Bai Feili received a call from Yu Fei. She agreed to take the role, but demanded a payment of fifty thousand, to be settled that very day. Yu Fei was at the hospital, arranging for her aunt to care for her mother, Yan Peishan, who was in stable condition after Yu Fei donated blood for her. Yu Fei had to leave to start rehearsals, explaining she had urgent matters to attend to.
Meanwhile, in the hospital, Hao Shi brought food for his mother. She inquired if his decision to apply to a fashion design college was serious, concerned it was merely a passing fancy. Hao Shi passionately articulated his views, emphasizing that comic art, like traditional narratives, explored themes of good versus evil and upheld justice and dreams, not childishness. Convinced by his earnestness, his mother eventually consented to his choice. Yu Fei arrived at Jiubai studio for rehearsal.
Bai Feili first offered her food, then thoughtfully packed some fish soup for her to take home to her mother, showing he was aware of her situation. Touched, Yu Fei thanked him tearfully. They proceeded with costume fittings, ensuring the measurements were perfect, and then changed into practice clothes. During their rehearsal, which involved incorporating Peking Opera martial arts movements and props like a fan, Yu Fei accidentally pricked Bai Feili's hand.
Seeing the blood, he asked her to bandage it, remarking that he was "glad" to be wounded by Liu Xichan. Yu Fei questioned if the play was profitable, to which Bai Feili admitted they "lose money almost every time." Despite the financial aspect, Yu Fei found herself drawn to "South Song," appreciating its sad but profound story about choice and fate in the scholar's recurring dreams.
She shared her own interpretation, suggesting that even a fleeting glance could signify a love that spanned "thousands of years." Bai Feili resonated with her "ten thousand years at a glance" ending, extending the sentiment to family affection. He then took her to a control room, demonstrating how stage lighting (flowing light, follow spots) and sound effects were used to emphasize characters, outline their movements, and narrate the story, creating empathy for the audience.
He proposed that if she was still willing after the performance, they could explore that "ten thousand years" ending together. Unbeknownst to them, Qin Feng from Ande Group visited the hospital to inquire about Yan Peishan's condition. The doctor informed her that Yan Peishan had stage three cervical cancer, which had spread significantly, but was currently stable. Qin Feng, with an unfriendly expression, instructed the doctor to notify her of any changes.
Later that night, while at her mother's bedside, Yu Fei realized her bracelet (golden with three osmanthus flowers) was missing and called Bai Feili to ask if he had it. As Bai Feili looked at the bracelet he possessed, Guan Jiu called him with alarming news: all the stage costumes and props had been vandalized. She reported that swords were broken, umbrellas torn, clothes ruined with gum, and posters destroyed, including Liu Xichan's costume.
She decided to check the surveillance cameras, vowing that they would still emerge victorious. In the hospital, Yu Fei's mother, Yan Peishan, once again subtly encouraged Yu Fei to prioritize her career and praised Bai Feili's kindness over Xiao Dao. Yu Fei asked her mother if she had truly been indifferent when Yu Fei was sent away, recalling how she needed her mother's bracelet to sleep at night. Yan Peishan, however, claimed to have been "happy" without her. After her aunt brought medicine, Yu Fei's mother urged her to leave for her commitments, and Yu Fei departed, with her mother reminding her to bring bird's nest.
