Ouyang Jing pursued Li Fu, who used his agility to escape. Chu Ye gave chase but halted to rescue Shangguan Ya from falling roof tiles. Shangguan Ya, reflecting on her past with Xu Yunchuan, then faced a new disturbance as a group of elderly women arrived at Top Matchmaker, causing a ruckus. The women individually complained that the matches arranged by Top Matchmaker soon resulted in conflicts, and they demanded that Shangguan Ya refund their money and compensate them.
Chu Ye attempted to drive them away, but Shangguan Ya, realizing they were deliberately causing trouble, understood that force wouldn't work and a clever strategy was needed. She instructed Lian Li and Hongdou to assist her and had Chu Ye help bring in a brazier. She then aggressively scattered chili powder into the brazier and poured in her father's prized aged wine. Overwhelmed by the chili smoke, the troublesome women quickly fled.
However, Shangguan Ya had to retrieve the suffocating brazier herself. Seeing her eyes streaming from the thick smoke, Chu Ye took her up to a high pavilion so she could catch her breath and recover. As Shangguan Ya used Chu Ye's sleeve to wipe her tears, he tried to push her face away with his hand. Yet, seeing her tear-filled eyes, he felt a momentary stir.
Shangguan Ya, puzzled, looked at the stars and confided in him about her late mother. She lamented not being a good matchmaker like her mother, and to her surprise, Chu Ye patted her shoulder, assuring her she was doing well. Master Shangguan, exasperated and carrying a wine jar, was intercepted by Shangguan Ya, Lian Li, and Hongdou, who protected Chu Ye. Shangguan Ya told her father that mutual support and bickering were the hallmarks of a true family.
Meanwhile, Li Fu, disguised as a man from the Western Regions, attempted to enter Top Matchmaker, but the lingering presence of the elderly women at the entrance scared him off. Fortunately, Xu Yunchuan arrived and dispersed the women, citing their gathering as a public disturbance. Shangguan Ya was baffled by the desk and screen Xu Yunchuan had brought, but he declared he would be overseeing Top Matchmaker from that day forward.
Under the pretense of making tea, Shangguan Ya found Chu Ye and playfully begged him for help, reminding him that their "act" had to continue even at home. Wan Yuanming, believing Xu Yunchuan's inaction against the Bachelor Club implied his tacit approval, defiantly rallied his members, vowing to eliminate Top Matchmaker. Late that night, Shangguan Ya snuck into Chu Ye's bedroom and instructed him to memorize the script she had written for their "affectionate" interactions.
Xu Yunchuan's true intention in coming was not the official business he claimed. He presented Shangguan Ya with precious jewels he had brought from the Capital, including a tridacna stone from the Byzantine Empire and pearls from Persia, symbolizing auspiciousness and elegance. Shangguan Ya, however, dared not accept them and quickly feigned a cough, signaling Chu Ye to bring her a cloak. Watching Shangguan Ya intimately link arms with Chu Ye and leave, Xu Yunchuan pouted, clearly displeased.
Shangguan Ya then took out nail polish and asked Chu Ye to apply it for her. Xu Yunchuan immediately noticed the handkerchief placed between their hands and directly questioned whether it was to avoid suspicion. Without a word, Chu Ye tore away the handkerchief, took Shangguan Ya's hand, and slowly continued applying the nail polish, even gently blowing on her nails, which further annoyed Xu Yunchuan. The elderly women were, of course, dispatched by Wan Yuanming.
Upon learning that Xu Yunchuan was at Top Matchmaker, Wan Yuanming assumed Shangguan Ya was actively pursuing him and began plotting another scheme. Master Shangguan observed Shangguan Ya's wariness of Xu Yunchuan but felt there was no reason to refuse if profit could be made. Grandmother Shangguan, who adored Chu Ye and disliked her son calling him an "outsider," announced that she would go for wontons the next day and bring her "precious grandson-in-law" along.
Shangguan Ya accompanied her grandmother and Chu Ye to eat wontons. She mentioned the upcoming Lantern Releasing Festival, which takes place before the Ghost Month, where river lanterns are released for deceased family members, and decided to buy one for her mother. Observing couples on the street, Shangguan Ya praised Xu Yunchuan's ability to quickly restore order to Yueyang City's chaotic marriage situation.
In response, Chu Ye directly put a wonton from his spoon into her mouth, and Grandmother Shangguan chuckled, calling it playful bickering. Xu Yunchuan, using the excuse of delivering fragrant pills and sachets to Chu Ye, discovered no signs of a woman's regular presence in his room, further confirming his suspicion about the falsity of their relationship. Shangguan Ya planned to buy Chu Ye three garments, utilizing a "buy two, get one free" offer, to fulfill her promise. She asked him to take Grandmother Shangguan home first, but on her way back, Shangguan Ya was ambushed and knocked unconscious.
