Upon returning to Fuyun Hall, Jiuchen remained dispirited. Lingxi, knowing he had suffered an onset of the cold ailment, promptly prepared tea and a hand warmer. She chattered relentlessly, aiming to comfort him. Lingxi recounted how she felt important walking out of the Grand Hall holding Jiuchen’s hand, noting the jealous stares of other female immortals.
She then launched into a detailed explanation about the various coveted divine posts in the Heavenly Palace, from the Smallpox God to the multiple Plague Gods, asserting that people everywhere scramble for wealth and high positions. Expressing her fury over Jiuchen being falsely accused, she declared her wish to beat up "that old Tianlei Zhenjun" and "that old Yuan woman." Seeing her passionate defense, Jiuchen finally smiled.
Old Madam Yuan, dissatisfied with the outcome, returned home enraged and vented her frustration on Yuan Tong. She accused Yuan Tong of caring only for Jiuchen, rather than her own mother, her deceased elder brother, or the Yuan Clan. Yuan Tong argued that her brother’s death was an unavoidable casualty of war and not Jiuchen’s fault, especially since her brother, Yuanzheng, had served under Senior Deity and was highly valued by him.
However, Old Madam Yuan stubbornly questioned how an entire army could perish with only its general surviving, leaving no souls or skeletons. She believed Jiuchen had merely hidden in the Immortal Sea for fifty thousand years and was still protected by the Heavenly Emperor, but his true nature would eventually be exposed. She forbade Yuan Tong from defending Jiuchen further, threatening to bar her from the Yuan family’s door if she persisted.
Distraught, Yuan Tong went to the Yuan Clan’s ancestral temple and reread a letter from her late brother, Yuanzheng. As Yuan Tong approached Fuyun Hall, Duyu stopped her. He understood her internal conflict and dilemma. He acknowledged that the letter could prove Senior Deity’s innocence, but he warned that while Senior Deity could bear the consequences, the Yuan Clan could not; they might face exile to a savage region like the Lieyi tribe, never to recover.
He questioned if Yuan Tong, her mother, her tribe’s disciples, or future generations could endure such a fate, adding that she would never see Senior Deity again if she revealed the truth. Duyu suggested that Senior Deity’s silence was a deliberate choice to protect Yuanzheng’s posthumous reputation and the Yuan Clan’s centuries-old foundation and good name, knowing that the Yuan Clan could not bear the fallout.
Yuanzheng’s letter revealed that he had felt increasingly anxious and murderous while eliminating demons, suspecting he had been tricked and bewitched by the Demon Tribe. He stated that if he became unable to control himself, he would request Senior Deity to end his predicament to prevent bringing humiliation to their clan. After careful consideration, Yuan Tong burned the letter in Duyu’s presence. Meanwhile, Ling Yue learned that the Heavenly Race intended to intervene and eliminate Zhonghao.
She expressed compassion, noting that Zhonghao’s people were fundamentally good and should not be punished for their ancestor’s crime. She asked Jing Xiu, her State Preceptor, to intercede with the Heavenly Emperor and the God of War on Zhonghao’s behalf. Jing Xiu questioned if offending the Heavenly Tribe for Zhonghao was worthwhile.
Ling Yue countered that Zhonghao’s ancestor was once a part of the God of War’s tribe, implying Jiuchen might not wish to kill Zhonghao, and even if Zhonghao were to die, his clan should not be unjustly implicated. Jing Xiu agreed to mediate. Ling Yue then expressed concern for Jing Xiu’s health, observing that his stagnant cultivation might be due to overwork, and advised him to rest and take care of his body.
As Jing Xiu took his leave, an Immortal Knot accidentally fell from his sleeve onto the ground. Ling Yue’s composure shattered upon seeing it. She recalled a past event where she and her husband, Mohuan, were being pursued with their infant daughter. Mohuan had urged her to flee with the child while he diverted their pursuers.
Ling Yue, unable to abandon her husband, left their daughter in a safe place, placing the Immortal Knot into her baby’s swaddling clothes before leaving to find Mohuan. The Immortal Knot Jing Xiu had dropped was identical to the one she had left with her child. Ling Yue was deeply troubled, wondering if Jing Xiu had deceived her and if her child was still alive, especially since the incident mirrored her dreams.
The Heavenly Emperor, discussing the matter with Lord Baishanxian, expressed his unwavering trust in Jiuchen, having watched him grow up. However, he acknowledged that without an explanation, it was difficult to convince others, and Jiuchen would have to bear the consequences of his choice to remain silent.
The Heavenly Emperor then revealed his deeper concern: the re-emergence of a heavy demonic aura on Dark Capital Mountain and the unsealing of the Heaven-Devouring Beast, which seemed connected to Jiuchen’s sudden awakening after fifty thousand years of slumber in the Immortal Sea. He resolved to investigate any link between Jiuchen’s awakening and the Demon Lord, vowing to eliminate anyone involved with demons who brought disaster upon the common people.
As the ten-day deadline approached, Lingxi had not found Jiuchen’s Immortal Knot. She attempted to weave a new one based on her memory, though her initial attempt was quite ugly. Huayan offered to teach her, and Lingxi admitted the knot was a gift for someone. Huayan, teasing Lingxi about having a crush, revealed her own past as a mortal, born in a palace to a guard and a maid.
Spared by the Empress, she lived in the palace, finding it restrictive and full of serving others. She later met her Respected Teacher, who taught her immortal magic. After three thousand years of cultivation, she transformed from an Earth Immortal to a Heavenly Immortal and came to Fuyun Hall. Lingxi humorously pointed out that Huayan had simply moved from one palace to another, transitioning from serving mortals to serving immortals, and weaving for mortals to weaving for immortals.
Huayan countered that the difference lay in her vastly extended lifespan, now able to live for thousands of years. Later, Shisan, unimpressed by Lingxi’s attempt, called it merely an "Immortal lump" or "Immortal knot of thread." Lingxi insisted that a knot crafted by her own hands, though perhaps not beautiful, possessed unique and profound significance due to her sincerity. Jiuchen’s reputation had plummeted after the banquet, leading to a decline in Fuyun Hall’s treatment.
When immortal maids went to procure supplies like Purple Spirit Scent, Understanding Dao Tea, Green Jade Ginseng, and Hundred Immortals, they were often met with excuses or told the person in charge was absent. Shisan, frustrated by the disdain and mockery Fuyun Hall now faced, tried to confront those responsible, but Lingxi reminded her to control her temper. They decided to go themselves.
Lingxi observed how quickly people who once fawned over Fuyun Hall had turned hostile at the first sign of rumors. During their unsuccessful errand, Lingxi encountered an immortal maid carrying a small, skinny mortal puppy. The maid explained that a playful Qingluan from Wanling Park had brought the puppy from the mortal realm, and since it was too timid for the divine beasts, it was intended as food for them.
Lingxi, feeling pity, asked to adopt the puppy, naming him Xiao Bai. Another immortal commented on Xiao Bai’s lack of spiritual aura and meager size, suggesting it was barely edible, but Lingxi firmly stated she had rescued it to care for it, not for consumption. That night, Lingxi tied Xiao Bai near the stairs, but by morning, he was gone. After searching, she discovered Xiao Bai inside Senior Deity’s room.
Lingxi explained the situation, and Jiuchen did not blame her, simply advising her to take full responsibility if she chose to raise him. Lingxi assured him that despite the rumors, she believed him to be a good deity. Lingxi continued to diligently practice weaving the Immortal Knot as Huayan had taught her. One day, after finally completing a knot, she temporarily placed it in a basket when she was called away.
In her absence, the mischievous Xiao Bai knocked over the basket, getting tangled in the thread and the newly woven Immortal Knot. Xiao Bai then trotted into Senior Deity’s room and urinated on his shoes. Jiuchen, finding the situation both annoying and amusing, summoned Lingxi. Lingxi admitted her pet’s misbehavior and offered to take the punishment herself. Jiuchen sentenced her to clean the Grand Hall for an entire month without using any immortal magic.
He then noticed the tangled, newly woven Immortal Knot. Recognizing it was a fake, Jiuchen asked about it. Lingxi, unable to deceive him, confessed that the true Immortal Knot had been lost, despite her having searched every corner of Fuyun Hall.
