Early in the morning, a government official, who had made arrogant remarks the previous day, arrived at Qingyao's residence clutching his stomach. He had suffered from severe vomiting and diarrhea overnight, rendering him unable to stand. Qingyao deliberately mentioned her high consultation fees, to which the terrified official readily agreed, promising to pay any amount. Seeing his desperate state, Qingyao administered an acupuncture needle and provided a prescription for three doses of medicine.
She then generously gave the bag of silver coins he paid her to the mother of a sick child, who expressed immense gratitude. Observing this scene from an upper floor, an Imperial bodyguard was deeply impressed by Qingyao's character and medical ethics. He instructed his subordinate to proceed to Wei County with the imperial decree while he descended to intercept Qingyao. That night, as Lin Mo embroidered in her room, Jiuchen and Siming appeared, invisible to her.
Siming explained that the world undergoes four phases—creation, maintenance, destruction, and emptiness—and mortals endure four sufferings—birth, aging, sickness, and death—all unavoidable. Though immortals are spared illness and enjoy eternal life, they are bound by three fated trials, which, if not navigated carefully, can lead to their death. Siming noted that throughout tens of thousands of years, more immortals have perished from their own trials than at the hands of the Demon Tribe.
He stressed that Lingxi, as a minor earth immortal, was fated to undergo three trials concurrently, the outcome of which remained unpredictable, and warned Jiuchen against intervening. Successful completion would result in significant advancement in cultivation and allow Lingxi to return to the immortal ranks. Siming added that Lingxi's entry in the Book of Mortal Destiny indicated she would live only nineteen years. He warned that any forced interference would only foil her progress.
Jiuchen, finding Siming's explanations lengthy, sent him back to the Heavenly Palace while he remained, gazing at Lin Mo. Lin Mo, feeling tired, unconsciously dozed off at her table. Jiuchen, unable to resist, reached out to touch her head. However, as his hand grazed her hair, it began to visibly frost over. At that moment, Lin Mo stirred awake, and Jiuchen swiftly disappeared from the room. Lin Mo thought she saw a flash of white light dart towards her door.
She opened it to find "Young Lord Song" standing outside, which startled her. When she heard someone approaching in the courtyard, Lin Mo quickly pulled Jiuchen inside. She noticed his hands were even colder than before. In a flurry, she fetched a basin of hot water, added ginger, and urged him to soak his hands. Seeing him hesitate, she gently took his hands and placed them into the basin, only to quickly withdraw her own.
Jiuchen picked up an embroidered fragrant pouch from the table and asked if it was for him. Lin Mo shyly conveyed through gestures that it was meant to dispel his cold, but it wasn't finished, as she had intended to embroider his name on it. Jiuchen promptly tucked it into his robes, declaring it was good enough as it was.
He then wanted to explore the room, eager to see more of Lingxi's living space, but Lin Mo, fearing discovery and criticism, urged him to leave. Lin Mo then took his hand and led him out of the room. Concerned about being seen, she suggested he jump over the high wall, instructing him to take medicine and care for his cold.
Jiuchen, using sign language, advised Lin Mo to be more broad-minded, no matter what difficulties she encountered, assuring her that once she endured this period, things would take a turn for the better. He then covered her eyes with his hand, and when she opened them again, he was gone. In truth, Jiuchen had only cloaked himself behind the wall, watching until Lin Mo re-entered her room before transforming into a white light and departing.
The next morning, Lin Shaohai arrived at the Medicine Bureau and overheard colleagues gossiping about officers from the capital having arrested a young lady from the Feng Manor in the city's eastern section. At noon, on his way home, he encountered Miss Zhang, a matchmaker. She informed him that earlier, an officer, accompanied by one from the capital, had visited the local government office seeking the birthdates of unmarried women in their county.
Miss Zhang noted that the officer had paused when he saw Lin Mo's birthdate, leading her to suspect they intended to select palace ladies. She had, however, informed the officers that Lin Mo was deaf and mute and thus unsuitable for the palace. Lin Shaohai felt an unease about this revelation as he returned home. Upon entering his home, Lin Shaohai's wife informed him that Cheng'en had been looking for him, appearing anxious and sweaty, suggesting an urgent matter.
Realizing the seriousness of the situation, Lin Shaohai hurried back to the Medicine Bureau. Meanwhile, Lin Mo's maid, Xiao Ju, asked her if she wanted to hear some news about Young Lord Song, which she had learned from his servants. Lin Mo remained silent, gazing intently at Xiao Ju, indicating her interest. Xiao Ju recounted how, a few days prior, Young Lord Guan and others from a neighboring county had dared to belittle Wei County's talents in a tea house.
Young Lord Song, angered by this slight, immediately challenged Young Lord Guan to a poetry and lyrics contest, defeating him and forcing him to serve tea and apologize to all the scholars of Wei County. Lin Mo appeared surprised by this account, as "Young Lord Song," in her estimation, was known for his humility, politeness, and gentle demeanor, not someone who would be so aggressively overbearing.
After finishing her story, Xiao Ju picked up clothes from Lin Mo's bed, asking if they needed washing. Just then, Lin Zhan loudly called out from outside, insisting that Xiao Ju had not properly washed her clothes, driven by jealousy at seeing Xiao Ju working in Lin Mo's room. Witnessing this, Lin Mo remained calm and quietly took her own clothes to wash them herself. Back at the Medicine Bureau, Lin Shaohai found Cheng'en anxiously awaiting him.
Cheng'en urgently asked if the birthdate Lin Shaohai had provided for A'Mo, the third day of the fifth month, was correct. Upon receiving Lin Shaohai's affirmation, Cheng'en grew even more frantic. He revealed that he had relatives working in the capital who had heard news of the Crown Prince's critical illness. The imperial shaman had conducted a ritual and predicted that a "demonic star" had descended to the world, whose fate contradicted that of the dragon's son.
The shaman had already calculated the exact birthdate of this person, and government officers were now secretly searching for them. Cheng'en revealed that A'Mo's birthdate matched the shaman's calculation exactly. He added that the daughters of the Feng Family, Li Family, and Zhao Family—all of whom shared the same birthday as A'Mo, including the Zhao Family's twin daughters—had already been arrested. He warned Lin Shaohai that if Lin Mo were discovered and captured, her fate would be grim.
Hearing this, Lin Shaohai sprinted home, bolted the main gate, and rushed to Lin Mo's courtyard. Lin Mo was hanging clothes. Without a word, Lin Shaohai grabbed her arm and pulled her towards the back. Just as they reached the door, they heard officers outside smashing on the main gate, demanding entry.
Lin Shaohai paused for a moment, then turned, leading Lin Mo out through the back door and straight to a small wooden house at the foot of the mountain. After settling Lin Mo there, he repeatedly warned her not to return home, promising to protect her no matter what. He then hastily departed. Upon his return, Lin Shaohai found his entire family, including the Old Madam, kneeling in the courtyard.
A squad of Imperial bodyguards was searching for Lin Mo and demanding her whereabouts. Composing himself, Lin Shaohai lied, claiming his daughter had drowned in the river while washing clothes the previous day, and her body had not yet been recovered. The Imperial bodyguard, aware that Lin Shaohai was lying, forcibly took Lin Zhan as a hostage, threatening that if Lin Mo's body was not retrieved by the next day, Lin Zhan's body would be used as a substitute.
After the Imperial bodyguards departed, Lin Shaohai recounted the full story to his family. His second wife, Lin Zhan's mother, tearfully pleaded with the Old Madam to intervene on her daughter's behalf. The Old Madam also relentlessly pressed Lin Shaohai for Lin Mo's location, but he remained silent. Faced with this dire situation, Lin Mo's mother, in desperation, revealed that Lin Mo's birthday was not the third day of the fifth month, and that she was not their biological daughter.
The Old Madam grew even more enraged upon hearing this. To absolve Lin Mo, Lin Shaohai said he had adopted her from the Benevolent Orphanage because his wife had trouble conceiving. The Old Madam demanded that Lin Mo be handed over to the authorities immediately to secure Lin Zhan's return. The second wife threatened to take her own life if Lin Zhan were to die.
The Old Madam also threatened to die in front of Lin Shaohai if he did not comply. Under immense pressure from his mother and second wife, Lin Shaohai reluctantly gave in. He arranged for a rich meal to be prepared in the kitchen and carried it to the small wooden house where Lin Mo was hiding. Lin Mo repeatedly questioned him about what had happened at home and why she had to hide.
Lin Shaohai only told her that everything was fine now, and urged her to eat, promising to take her home after the meal. Lin Mo took a few bites but soon felt dizzy and disoriented. As she collapsed, seemingly sensing what was happening, a single clear tear streamed from her eye. Watching the daughter he had cherished for over a decade face death, Lin Shaohai wept inconsolably.
