Old Madam Lin arranged for Shumei to become Lin Shaohai's concubine, and Shumei later gave birth to their second daughter, Lin Zhan. Old Madam Lin doted heavily on Lin Zhan, causing the girl to become spoiled and arrogant. As the years passed, the two young ladies grew up, but their treatment remained vastly different. Lin Zhan was ashamed of her older sister, Lin Mo, who was deaf, and often bullied her in secret.
Lin Mo also received little attention from Peiyun, Lin Shaohai's principal wife. Fortunately, Lin Shaohai remained true to his promise to always cherish his gentle daughter, Lin Mo. One day, Lin Zhan invited friends over to play. They were enjoying themselves when Lin Mo appeared. Although Lin Zhan's friends invited Lin Mo to join them, Lin Zhan's joyful expression immediately soured.
After her friends left, Lin Zhan tearfully complained to Old Madam Lin, insisting that Lin Mo should be confined to her room. She lamented that everyone now knew she had a deaf older sister, which she found utterly embarrassing. Old Madam Lin, already biased, comforted her with promises of a new silk dress for the approaching New Year, which managed to appease Lin Zhan.
At dinner, the family had just sat down when Lin Shaohai unexpectedly returned, much earlier than anticipated. When greeting Old Madam Lin, Lin Shaohai subtly winked at Lin Mo, immediately lifting her spirits. Throughout the meal, Lin Zhan watched with jealousy as her father consistently served dishes to Lin Mo.
Old Madam Lin then instructed Lin Shaohai to purchase new accessories for Peiyun and Shumei, and new clothes for Lin Zhan, as the year-end approached, but made no mention of Lin Mo, saddening her father. Later that night, Lin Shaohai quietly led Lin Mo to a secluded courtyard. He had brought her favorite snacks, carefully teaching her to say the name of each item as she ate them.
He told Lin Mo that he had been accepted into the Medicine Bureau and would no longer need to travel frequently. He vowed to stay by her side and teach her to speak so she would never be bullied again. Lin Mo shook her head, asserting that no one bullied her. She revealed that she could understand what others were saying but sometimes pretended not to, hoping to engage them in play.
She confessed that she feared loneliness more than ridicule. Heartbroken and relieved, Lin Shaohai asked her to hold out her hand and produced a small golden lock, a special gift from his trip. Jiuchen, who had been invisibly watching over Lin Mo, observed Lin Shaohai patiently teaching his daughter characters from the Thousand Character Classic through song, and then quietly departed. Meanwhile, Yuan Tong was brought to the Demon-Locking Tower and imprisoned.
Duyu was waiting at the entrance, but he was at a loss for words. Yuan Tong merely glanced at him indifferently before entering the tower. Inside, Huodou remarked to another demon that he was keen to see how long she could endure. Later, Doctor Song Cheng'en came to visit Lin Shaohai. While he was there, Lin Mo was in her room reading, but she grew tired and lay down for a nap.
Lin Zhan, seeing her asleep, picked up a brush to draw on her face, but then she noticed the small golden lock around Lin Mo's neck. Seizing the opportunity, she quietly cut the red string and stole the lock. When Lin Mo awoke, she found her neck bare, with only a piece of red string left on the table. Distressed, Lin Mo went to find Lin Shaohai but overheard him discussing a recent epidemic with Song Cheng'en.
Ten children had already presented with similar symptoms, and they were greatly concerned. Lin Shaohai instructed Song Cheng'en to stabilize the situation and prepare more medicinal supplies. After Song Cheng'en left, Lin Shaohai asked Lin Mo what was troubling her. Wanting to spare her father from more worry, Lin Mo kept the stolen golden lock a secret, simply saying she missed him.
A shaman conveyed Jing Xiu's message to Ling Yue, urging her to seek aid from the Heavenly Palace, but Ling Yue harbored deep resentment over her daughter's death and adamantly refused. Instead, Ling Yue wrote a secret letter and entrusted Grandmother Shi with her official token, instructing her to travel to Green Hill and deliver the letter to the State Master there. Unbeknownst to her, Princess Baoqing secretly overheard this entire conversation.
Qinyuan reported to Zhonghao that Jing Xiu had been impeached and imprisoned. Knowing that Ling Yue was gravely injured and the Shanling court was in chaos, Zhonghao recognized this as the tribe's weakest moment. Despite Qinyuan's suspicion that this might be a trap, Zhonghao dismissed the doubt and ordered the Demon Army to launch a massive assault. Without their general, the Shanling soldiers were leaderless, and their defenses were quickly breached.
Courtiers desperately pleaded with Ling Yue to release Jing Xiu, but she steadfastly refused, confident that reinforcements from Green Hill would soon arrive. Just then, a servant rushed in to report that the Demon Army had broken through. Meanwhile, Princess Baoqing used a token to release Jing Xiu. When he questioned how she obtained it, Baoqing admitted she had stolen it from Grandmother Shi, who was on her way to seek aid.
Baoqing had ambushed Grandmother Shi in a deserted area, meaning Green Hill never received Ling Yue's plea for help. As they attempted to escape, Jing Xiu witnessed the demons slaughtering the Shanling people. He instructed his subordinate, Chijiu, to take Princess Baoqing to a Silver Birch Grove and wait, while he turned back to rescue his people. However, Zhonghao intercepted him and, wielding his Demon Blade, gravely wounded and captured him.
Zhonghao brought Jing Xiu to the Spirit-Binding Abyss, gloating that the Xuan Bird Tribe was finally at its end. Jing Xiu defiantly retorted that generations of loyalty were superior to generations of treachery. Enraged, Zhonghao used seven White Bone Nails to seal Jing Xiu's vital energy channels, destroying his cultivation, and taunted that only a member of the Phoenix Tribe could remove them. He then had Jing Xiu imprisoned in the forbidden lands to await his death.
Unbeknownst to Zhonghao, Jing Xiu was soon rescued by the Shaman. Yuan Tong overheard another demon, Changyou, grumbling that Huodou was once the mount of the God of Fire, Zhurong. She offered him vitality-boosting pills in exchange for information. Changyou revealed that Huodou, Zhurong's former mount, had been imprisoned for 70,000 years. He was accused of deserting a battle, but Huodou always claimed that he had acted on Zhurong's secret orders, only to be betrayed and disavowed later.
As punishment, his five senses were stripped away, but over the millennia, he has absorbed them back from other demons and is now fully recovered, hoping to one day leave the tower and confront Zhurong. Duyu again attempted to plead with Jiuchen on Yuan Tong's behalf, but Jiuchen's attendant turned him away. Jiuchen then invisibly visited the mortal realm. Lin Mo was washing clothes when Lin Zhan approached, proudly showing a small bracelet on her wrist.
She mockingly told Lin Mo that the bracelet had been crafted from her stolen golden lock and threatened to have their grandmother expel Lin Mo from the house if she caused any trouble. Crushed by the humiliation, Lin Mo was filled with despair. Seeing her sorrow, Jiuchen had an idea and magically made the plum blossoms in the corner of the yard bloom, which instantly brought a smile to her face.
