Shu Jingrong visited Chi Xiaotai, who had been confined to Snow Tower by Xiao Yiqing to reflect on her actions. Chi Xiaotai questioned if Shu Jingrong came for Xiao Yiqing or Gao Mengfei, to which Shu Jingrong affirmed her visit was for Chi Xiaotai. Chi Xiaotai expressed that her grounding was the greatest forgiveness she could receive.
Shu Jingrong conveyed that Gao Mengfei, who had always shied away from discussing his past, would have worried about Chi Xiaotai most if he had any lingering concerns in the world. Holding Gao Mengfei's sword, Guo Se, Chi Xiaotai lamented her belated realization of his deep affection.
She regretted not coming to her senses sooner, believing it might have averted his tragic end, and also regretted that if she had not constantly demanded Gao Mengfei to possess supreme power, he would not have ended up this way. She recalled his ambition to become the strongest in the pugilistic world, akin to his sword, and his hope that she would notice him.
Shu Jingrong then informed Chi Xiaotai that Gao Mengfei’s funeral would take place in three days and that she would personally ensure his burial in Sand Valley, where he would find companionship with Mister Bai. Although Shu Jingrong confessed she could not forgive Chi Xiaotai, she urged her to live well, as Gao Mengfei had wished.
Chi Xiaotai accepted that her past actions were unforgivable and vowed to live a life of repentance, remembering Gao Mengfei's contributions to Snow Tower, including eliminating the Lei family and taking down Flower Palace. She then requested Shu Jingrong to share stories about Gao Mengfei's past, particularly "the Qing Yu that she never knew."
Shu Jingrong responded that the name "Qing Yu" and all that happened in Sand Valley were too far in the past, having been wiped out along with the valley's destruction, and since Gao Mengfei himself preferred not to speak of it, it was best to let it remain in the past. Later, a disciple informed Shu Jingrong that Shi Mingyan had awakened. Shu Jingrong proceeded to Shi Mingyan's room, where Zi Mo was already attending to her.
Zi Mo explained that while Doctor Mo’s treatments would heal Shi Mingyan's wounds, her legs might never allow her to walk again. Shi Mingyan, however, angrily denounced Xiao Yiqing, accusing him of hypocrisy. She claimed he merely pretended to imprison her while secretly intending to kill her, asserting that she fiercely resisted and only lost her legs instead of her life. She painted Xiao Yiqing as a tyrant who sought to use her plight to instill fear in others.
Shu Jingrong, having overheard from outside, entered to inquire what had happened. Shi Mingyan tearfully fabricated a story: Xiao Yiqing's disciples, assigned to guard her, suddenly turned on her. She claimed she fought back but they broke her legs with a flower pot. She then described how, by sheer luck, the disciples fell and hit their heads, giving her the chance to defend herself with a chair, exposing Xiao Yiqing's true colors.
Shu Jingrong was somewhat swayed by Shi Mingyan's tearful account. Believing Shi Mingyan's fabricated story, Shu Jingrong rushed to confront Xiao Yiqing, brushing past a servant who tried to stop her. She questioned if he was concerned for Shi Mingyan or simply upset she was still alive.
When Xiao Yiqing asked for clarification, Shu Jingrong defended Shi Mingyan, asserting that her rebellion with Gao Mengfei stemmed from a desire to avenge Ye Fengsha and Ren Feiyang, and that Shi Mingyan was merely a child acting out of hatred. Xiao Yiqing revealed that Shi Mingyan herself had attacked him and pondered if this aggressive act was Gao Mengfei's influence. Shu Jingrong dismissed the motive as irrelevant, stating their clear intent was to kill him.
Xiao Yiqing criticized Shi Mingyan's "cruel-hearted resolute" as unbefitting a child, to which Shu Jingrong defiantly retorted, asking if that was his justification for ordering her injury. Xiao Yiqing then asked if she truly believed he had harmed Shi Mingyan. Shu Jingrong affirmed her suspicion, reminding him of his unwavering stance against traitors within Snow Tower.
Exasperated, Xiao Yiqing accused her of remaining soft-hearted and pigheaded, just as she had been when she allowed Lei Chuyun to escape, nearly compromising their plans. He warned that her compassion and cowardice could eventually be used as weapons against him. Unyielding, Shu Jingrong declared that she would personally oversee Shi Mingyan and bear any consequences if Shi Mingyan proved dangerous in the future. Xiao Yiqing later went to Shi Mingyan's room to confront her.
Shi Mingyan, seeing him, taunted him, questioning his presence if his true intention was to kill her, and hinted that he wouldn't dare because Shu Jingrong, his greatest concern, had promised her protection. Ignoring her provocations, Xiao Yiqing questioned how someone so young could possess such a dark and manipulative mind. Shi Mingyan confessed, admitting that she knew he never truly intended to kill her despite her betrayal.
She revealed that she had orchestrated the entire incident, including initiating the attack, killing the two disciples, and deliberately breaking her own legs, solely to gain an audience with him and Shu Jingrong. Her motive, she explained, was a profound hatred for him for failing to avenge her aunt Ye Fengsha and Ren Feiyang, who died in vain and are only remembered by her.
She declared she could not bear to see him prosper and was willing to endure any pain, including sacrificing her own life, if it meant alienating Snow Tower, tarnishing Xiao Yiqing's reputation, and turning him against Shu Jingrong. She believed that a weakened Xiao Yiqing, isolated from Shu Jingrong, would face a difficult struggle against the Moon Sect, leading to a mutually destructive outcome that would satisfy her desire for revenge.
Xiao Yiqing felt speechless, remarking that the arrogant little girl had indeed grown up, and found her truly terrifying. Meanwhile, Qing Hui reported to Ming He and Jia Ruo that Gao Mengfei had been defeated by Xiao Yiqing, who was saved by Shu Jingrong. He added that their men who besieged Snow Tower had all perished and that Gao Mengfei was reportedly killed by Shu Jingrong. Ming He acknowledged Xiao Yiqing’s formidable strength.
Qing Hui then informed them of widespread panic among the Moon Sect followers due to many being poisoned by the Moon God Flower, exhibiting symptoms similar to Mind Control. He noted the source was unknown as victims had no direct contact with the flower or Holy Lake. He cautiously mentioned pervasive rumors that the poisonings were caused by the vengeful spirit of the late Mistress Hua Lian, whose bones were buried within the Moon God Flower in the Holy Lake.
Ming He vehemently dismissed this as preposterous rumor-mongering, angrily reprimanding Qing Hui. Qing Hui confirmed the increasing number of poisonings, now affecting followers in Nanjiang. Jia Ruo urged Qing Hui to investigate quickly, as the toxicity could have dire consequences for Nanjiang, and stated he would personally investigate the Holy Lake if necessary. Ming He then dismissed everyone, asserting she would uncover the truth herself.
Once alone, Ming He confronted Jia Ruo, accusing him of intentionally spreading rumors about her mother's death, a secret only they shared. Jia Ruo did not deny it, explaining that while he would not interfere with her actions, he refused to let Xue Wen be wrongly implicated in Hua Lian's death. He vowed to find the poison source and prevent the Mind Control's spread to protect the people of Nanjiang.
Ming He angrily questioned if he ever considered her, asking if he was deliberately pushing her to her ruin by exposing her past. Jia Ruo countered by recalling how she had deceived him and led Sand Valley to destruction, asking if she had harbored any good intentions then.
He declared that he did not want her to die, stating that the saddest thing in the world was not death, but to live numbly, wishing for death but unable to find it. He reiterated his promise to remain by her side, a promise he would not break. Ming He subsequently dove into the Holy Lake to investigate.
She discovered that her practice of the Xuan Yin Heart Sutra, which involved extracting the Moon God Flower’s poison, had caused its roots to wither and release toxins into the lake.
Realizing that the poisoned followers must have consumed this contaminated Holy Lake water, she devised a plan: if all Nanjiang followers drank the water and fell under Mind Control, the Moon Sect’s power would be vastly augmented, making it effortless to contend with Snow Tower, even without Jia Ruo’s support. Concurrently, Jia Ruo observed the Holy Lake’s water seeping into the River of Remembrance, thereby polluting Nanjiang’s water supply.
Concerned about the potentially catastrophic consequences, he decided to investigate the Holy Lake himself, instructing a subordinate to stop the water flow upstream without informing Ming He, citing her poor health and recent preoccupations. He pledged to protect the people of Nanjiang. Jia Ruo also suspected Ming He's secretive activities were linked to the Moon God Flower. Following an iron chain beneath the lake, he found it led to the Moon Palace. Meanwhile, at Moon Palace, Ming He was already instructing Qing Hui to gather the poisoned followers, claiming she would personally administer the cure.
