Days earlier, at the Xiling Sect, Great Master Zhang spoke with his disciple, Lu Zizheng, about the Xu family's defection to the Sacred Blood Sect. He shared his sorrow, explaining that several of his fellow masters had died at the hands of the Sacred Blood Sect, making the two sects mortal enemies. He admitted this history kept him on high alert.

Lu Zizheng countered, saying he had heard different accounts – that the Sacred Blood Sect had not harmed civilians before the Duan family rallied the martial world against them, and that the claim of using commoners for Bloodcraft was a fabrication. He questioned why his master was so certain the Sacred Blood Sect was evil.

Great Master Zhang warned him that while Bloodcraft initially boosts power rapidly, it causes severe self-damage over time, requiring the practitioner to use the blood of others. He stated harming civilians for cultivation was an undeniable fact and strictly cautioned Lu Zizheng never to repeat what he had said to a third person, as it could bring trouble. Lu Zizheng acknowledged the warning, recognizing his master's care for him as his most promising disciple.

A welcome banquet was held at Xiling for Lu Zizheng's return. However, the celebration turned deadly as the disciples were poisoned. As his fellow disciples died around him, Lu Zizheng stood unharmed. Great Master Zhang, horrified, pleaded for the antidote, reminding Lu Zizheng they were his fellow disciples. Lu Zizheng coldly replied he had no fellow disciples, no family, no friends, and would live and die alone.

Great Master Zhang realized Lu Zizheng was using Bloodcraft and was from the Sacred Blood Sect. Lu Zizheng confirmed this, demanding the treasure map from Great Master Zhang. Zhang Sifeng refused, but Lu Zizheng revealed he wasn't alone, implying other Sacred Blood Sect members were present. Wang Tianshan stepped forward, offering himself in place of the others, reminding Lu Zizheng they had the greatest martial artist, Ruan Siqiong, who would avenge them.

Lu Zizheng chillingly revealed Ruan Siqiong was dead, having sacrificed himself for Gu Qingqiao and the Black Wood Human-shaped Sword. He explained Ruan Siqiong's status as the world's greatest fighter came from giving his heart to the sword, and he had now pierced that sword with a Soul-stealing Nail, trapping Ruan Siqiong's soul forever.

Lu Zizheng offered Great Master Zhang a chance to survive by submitting to the Sacred Blood Sect, acknowledging Zhang Sifeng had been the only one in Xiling who treated him well. Great Master Zhang refused, citing Xiling's code of unity and mutual support, regretting he couldn't protect his disciples. Meanwhile, other Sacred Blood Sect members confronted Zhang Sifeng. Lu Zizheng used Wang Tianshan to pressure Zhang Sifeng for the map.

Wang Tianshan, heartbroken by his master's betrayal and guilt-ridden over the fate of Xiling, fatally wounded himself with a sword. Zhang Sifeng mourned his disciple, feeling immense disgrace that a Sacred Blood Sect member had come from Xiling. Lu Zizheng declared he was born into the Sacred Blood Sect and joined Xiling solely for the Black Wood Human-shaped Sword, never intending to be a true disciple.

He revealed himself to be the sole survivor of the Sacred Blood Sect, whose entire clan was wiped out years ago by the Duan family and three great families. He gave Zhang Sifeng one last chance to trade the map for Wang Tianshan's life, but it was too late for Wang Tianshan. Zhang Sifeng, defiant, refused to let the Sacred Blood Sect succeed, telling Lu Zizheng he was too late, the map was gone. Zhang Sifeng then also perished.

Lu Zizheng, upon learning the map wasn't found, ordered Xiling burned, vowing that if he couldn't have the map, no one else would. Realizing the map must have been given to the last remaining Xiling disciple, Gu Qingqiao, he ordered his followers to proceed immediately to Jizhou Academy. At Jizhou Academy, Shaoyi had gone missing. Duan Yu planned to go to Jizhou to search for him.

Gu Qingqiao also wanted to go, but her father, Gu Xingwu, refused to allow it, feeling she and Duan Yu were no longer a good match and should not be involved. He instructed Da to prevent Gu Qingqiao from leaving her study. Duan Yu explained to Gu Xingwu that the trip to Jizhou was partly a Duan family matter, and he didn't want Gu Qingqiao to risk danger, but also declared his lifelong commitment to her.

Gu Xingwu later spoke with a despondent Gu Qingqiao, acknowledging her continued feelings for Duan Yu. Gu Qingqiao expressed her desire for things to end quickly, explaining she didn't want anyone else to be hurt because of her, implying Shaoyi's disappearance might be related to her, and therefore she felt responsible for finding him.

As Duan Yu prepared to depart for Jizhou, he didn't expect Gu Qingqiao to join him, but she arrived just as they were leaving, bringing fresh buns from her father. Upon reaching Jizhou Academy, they investigated Shaoyi's disappearance. They discovered he hadn't taken his clothes or money, suggesting a hurried departure. In Jizhou, he had bought a fighting chicken and won a significant amount of money at a casino.

He used the winnings to buy numerous antiques, specifically those with "pearl" in their names, such as luminous pearls, golden pearls, and jade pearls. Duan Yu speculated this was part of Shaoyi's effort to help Gu Qingqiao find the Heavenly Pearl. He found it suspicious that Shaoyi disappeared shortly after they suspected the Heavenly Pearl might be with him, suggesting a connection to the Sacred Blood Sect. The valuable luminous pearl Shaoyi bought was also strangely missing from his room.

Believing the casino might be involved due to Shaoyi winning a large sum, Duan Yu and his guard, Xing Si, went there. However, the casino owner claimed he didn't know Shaoyi's whereabouts either and had wanted to recover his losses, but Shaoyi was too difficult to handle. The owner showed them injuries he claimed were caused by Shaoyi's flying darts. Convinced the casino owner was not withholding information, Duan Yu ordered Xing Si to keep an eye on him.

They concluded that Shaoyi's focus on buying "pearl" items was connected to the Heavenly Pearl. Meanwhile, Lu Zizheng received reports from his followers. He learned that Cheng Mufei, the principal of Jizhou Academy, had a wife suffering from tuberculosis whom he cared for deeply. He also learned that Duan Yu and the "Star of Rebellion" (Gu Qingqiao) had arrived at Jizhou Academy due to Duan Shaoyi's disappearance.

When a subordinate asked if they should go after the treasure map Gu Qingqiao might have, Lu Zizheng dismissed the suggestion. Gu Qingqiao later saw Mr. Guo, one of the academy's teachers, being pressured by the casino owner, presumably over debts. As she was about to leave, she encountered Lu Zizheng. He asked if Zhang Sifeng had given her anything before she left Xiling.

Gu Qingqiao replied that Ruan Siqiong had died because of her, so Zhang Sifeng would likely want to harm her, not give her anything. When Gu Qingqiao asked if he could use his abilities to find Shaoyi, Lu Zizheng told her to close her eyes, but then he left without helping her. The search continued at the academy. Duan Yu and Gu Qingqiao spoke with students who knew Shaoyi.

They learned Shaoyi was skilled in many things and that he had purchased a fighting chicken and gone to the casino three days prior, saying he had an appointment. They also confirmed Shaoyi's collection of items with "pearl" in their names. They discovered the luminous pearl was missing. Since Shaoyi hadn't taken any money, they considered the possibility he might have sold the pearl.

The next morning, they received alarming news: a severed hand had been found near the academy, and officials thought it might belong to Shaoyi. They were taken to identify it. Duan Yu examined the hand and, remembering Shaoyi practiced archery and would have calluses on his right index and middle fingers, confirmed that the hand did not belong to Shaoyi. This brought temporary relief, but shortly after, news arrived that another body part, a leg, had been found.

The cruelty of the killer was apparent. Duan Yu and Gu Qingqiao met with Principal Cheng and Mr. Guo. Principal Cheng mentioned Shaoyi had not returned to Changqing and reiterated his offer to help, stating he would write to the Jizhou magistrate to assist in the search and keep an eye out due to the dismemberment case.

They discussed Shaoyi's activities again, including the missing luminous pearl, but students who knew Shaoyi said they hadn't noticed it, as everyone had been busy returning to the academy. The discussion with Mr. Guo revealed his difficult temper; Principal Cheng mentioned Mr. Guo had been angry earlier when he defended a student against his complaint. Later, Mr. Guo was seen arguing heatedly with the casino owner at the academy gates.
