During this period, Lin Heping’s friends jokingly informed him that his mother was getting married the next day, having already bought new vases for her new home. Lin Heping confronted his mother, asking why she kept it a secret. She admitted to fearing his tantrums. He voiced his strong disapproval of her marrying Nan Jian Ming and bringing new people into their house, particularly Nan Sheng, whom he would have to call his younger sister.

His mother became upset, accusing him of being inconsiderate, but eventually insisted he go to the bus station to pick up Nan Jian Ming and his daughter, Nan Sheng. Meanwhile, Nan Sheng and her father, Nan Jian Ming, were on their way to meet Lin Heping’s mother. Nan Jian Ming expressed his excitement about forming a new family, telling Nan Sheng she would have a new mother, Aunty Lan, and an elder brother, Lin Heping.

He had Nan Sheng practice calling them by their new titles. At the bus station, Nan Jian Ming went to buy freshly ground soy milk for Nan Sheng. While he was gone, a truck struck him, and Nan Sheng desperately cried for help and an ambulance as her father lay injured. Lin Heping arrived at the bus station but couldn’t find Nan Jian Ming or Nan Sheng, leading to his mother scolding him for not looking properly.

Just then, Lin Heping’s mother received a distressed call from Nan Sheng, who reported that her father had been in an accident and was at the Central Hospital. Despite heavy rain making it difficult to find a taxi, a kind passerby, Ah Li, offered them a ride to the hospital, overriding Lin Heping’s mother’s concern about gossip. At the hospital, Nan Sheng was distraught.

The doctor delivered a grim prognosis: her father had suffered a massive impact, and his heart and lungs were failing, meaning he wouldn't last long. Nan Sheng pleaded with the doctor to save him, blaming herself for asking for soy milk, which had led her father to the store where he was hit. Lin Heping and his mother arrived, finding Nan Sheng in anguish. Shortly after, the doctor announced that Nan Sheng’s father had passed away despite their best efforts.

Both Nan Sheng and Lin Heping’s mother were consumed by grief, with Lin Heping’s mother crying out about their wedding day being tomorrow and her hopes for a good life being shattered. Elsewhere, Ah Li spoke with her brother, Xu Zhensheng, scolding him for his past actions and for secretly driving without a license.

She then mentioned having driven Lin Heping and his mother to the hospital because the man Lin Heping's mother was marrying had been hit by a truck right after getting off the bus. Xu Zhensheng anxiously asked about the man's condition, and when Ah Li told him that the doctor had pronounced him dead, Xu Zhensheng broke down in tears, confirming his immense guilt as the driver.

Lin Heping tried to comfort a devastated Nan Sheng at their home, offering her an apple and encouraging her to express her feelings. Nan Sheng continued to blame herself, believing her desire for soy milk caused her father's death. Lin Heping reassured her that it wasn't her fault and tried to cheer her up by talking about the chocolate he had bought for his new "kid sister," whom he had imagined to be pretty and spirited.

He promised to take care of her in the future. Lin Heping’s mother called Nan Sheng’s paternal aunt to inform her of her brother’s death and discuss funeral arrangements. The aunt shockingly showed little concern, suggesting a simple funeral and stating she was too busy to attend. Angered, Lin Heping’s mother hung up, furious at her callousness.

Nan Sheng then expressed her wish to stay in a guest house, feeling she was troubling them, and asked to take a photo of her father. Lin Heping convinced her to stay, emphasizing that if her father had lived, they would already be a family, and she shouldn't leave during the funeral period.

When Lin Heping’s mother returned, she lied to Nan Sheng, saying her aunt was very sad but too busy to come, and that she would arrange the funeral. Nan Sheng offered to pay her back, but Lin Heping’s mother refused, insisting it was her duty. Both Lin Heping and his mother firmly told Nan Sheng to treat their home as her own and stay with them. Lin Heping prepared his room for Nan Sheng, moving his belongings.

Nan Sheng discovered some inappropriate books, which Lin Heping quickly claimed belonged to Xu Zhensheng, playfully denying he had ever read them. He then told her to rest. Separately, Ah Li was confronted by Chen Yicheng, who begged for another chance, promising to divorce his wife and give Ah Li all his property. Ah Li vehemently refused, calling him a liar and expressing her humiliation at being labeled his mistress.

She furiously rejected his attempts to manipulate her with financial promises, declaring she wouldn’t be conned again and threatening to call the police if he didn’t leave. Nan Sheng’s father was buried. Lin Heping’s mother reaffirmed her promise to treat Nan Sheng like her own daughter. At the funeral, Lin Heping expressed his anger that the driver hadn't been caught and vowed to bring the culprit to justice.

Xu Zhensheng, present at the funeral, agreed that the murderer should be severely punished, his words tinged with evident discomfort. He then promised Lin Heping that he would also care for Nan Sheng like his own sister. That night, both Lin Heping and Nan Sheng were restless. Nan Sheng, unable to sleep, got up, startling Lin Heping.

He discovered she was setting up a tent in the room, explaining she was used to sleeping in one from her cramped aunt’s home. She suggested Lin Heping sleep in the bed, placing alcohol bottles around her tent as a playful deterrent to him. Nan Sheng wrote in her diary, expressing her deep sorrow and confusion about her father abandoning her in an unfamiliar place.

Lin Heping heard her and offered to talk, comforting her by saying that if there was another world, her father would be living well and would want her to live well too. Later, Xu Zhensheng invited Nan Sheng and Lin Heping for a meal. He was overly solicitous towards Nan Sheng. During dinner, he nervously inquired about Nan Sheng's upcoming college entrance exams and her household registration, prompting Lin Heping to question his intentions.

Nan Sheng firmly stated that she wouldn't return to her hometown until her father's driver was caught, a declaration that visibly unnerved Xu Zhensheng. After the meal, as Lin Heping and Nan Sheng walked together, he told her to disregard Xu Zhensheng’s probing questions, assuring her that they did not want her to leave and wished for her to continue her studies.

Nan Sheng, however, expressed her desire to find a job, locate the driver responsible for her father's death, and then leave. Lin Heping insisted that their house was her permanent home, reiterating that since their parents were meant to be married, she was now his mother’s daughter and his younger sister, and she should not leave.

The narrative then shifts back to the present, with Lin Heping's thoughts reflecting on Nan Sheng and connecting her image to Qiao Man, two similar-looking girls who entered his life, offering him a chance at atonement and a future.
