Lin Heping, still deeply missing Nan Sheng despite Qiao Man's recent declaration of love and his subsequent rejection of her, found himself unable to move on. Earlier, Qiao Man had expressed her affection for him, saying she didn't just place her hope on him but had fallen in love. Lin Heping, however, insisted they were merely best friends and ended the call.

Xiao Xi then arrived, informing Lin Heping that Nan Sheng had left, leaving behind a letter and a diary titled "The Riverbank Diary." In her letter, Nan Sheng wrote that she was heading to a corner of the world that belonged to her, believing it would be their last communication.

She recalled cherished memories like their bicycle rides and their small tent, but felt that these moments were now losing their meaning, likening it to a rainbow losing its color or a falling star. Nan Sheng confessed her desire to leave the city, stating the happiness from it would become mere fragments in her heart.

She entrusted the diary to Lin Heping, asking him to store their memories, and apologized, requesting him to convey her farewell to Aunt Lan (Lin Mother) as she lacked the courage to do so herself. She also asked him not to search for her, concluding with an enduring declaration of love. Lin Heping was distraught, frantically calling out for Nan Sheng to return. He searched everywhere, but by dusk, he was left only with memories at their favorite restaurant.

Meanwhile, Xu Ali's business, Li Ping Ge, was doing well, allowing her to quickly repay a debt of RMB50,000 to Tuozi, who tried to entice her into a business partnership, but she refused. Soon after, her brother, Xu Zhen Sheng, rushed in, informing her of Nan Sheng's sudden departure, leaving only the letter and "The Riverbank Diary." Worried about Lin Heping's state of mind, Xu Ali hurried to the restaurant.

She found him drinking alone, deep in remorse, believing he had deeply hurt Nan Sheng with his public rejection. Xu Ali joined him, drinking heavily, attempting to comfort him while also expressing frustration at Nan Sheng's impulsive departure. Lin Heping decided he had to find Nan Sheng. As time passed, Nan Sheng remained untraceable, and the relationship Lin Heping desperately tried to hold onto seemed to fade.

Lin Mother, who had previously opposed Lin Heping and Nan Sheng's relationship, now regretted her actions. Upon seeing Qiao Man again a few days prior, she had hoped to set her up with Lin Heping due to her resemblance to Nan Sheng. However, when Lin Heping visited home, he unequivocally stated that Qiao Man was already married, dashing his mother's hopes.

Lin Mother then vehemently told Lin Heping to break up his partnership with Xu Ali, implying that both Xu Ali and Xu Zhen Sheng were "not good people." This puzzled Lin Heping, who knew Xu Zhen Sheng as his best friend, supposedly studying overseas as a carefree painter. Lin Mother quickly changed the subject to avoid further questions. At Jin Ke's studio, Qiao Man was meant to present the creative inspiration for her novel, "Meeting Barcelona," for its film adaptation.

However, her mind was elsewhere. The meeting was interrupted by Luo Chen, who barged in, angrily arguing with Jin Ke about copyright issues. Qiao Man intervened, proposing that if Luo Chen would cooperate with Director Jin Ke, she would dedicate herself to developing the film, promising to boost the book's sales and ensure benefits for everyone. Luo Chen, momentarily stunned by Qiao Man's striking resemblance to Nan Sheng, unexpectedly agreed.

Afterward, Jin Ke, surprised by Luo Chen's compliance, urged Qiao Man to swiftly begin outlining the script. Later, Luo Chen met Xiao Xi, stating he didn't want to discuss work. He confessed to thinking about their university days, recalling how he pursued Nan Sheng while Xiao Xi and Xu Zhen Sheng seemingly conspired against him. He admitted to being foolish back then, having lost himself over the years, his heart twisted by hatred.

He expressed a deep realization that Nan Sheng would not have liked the person he had become. Xiao Xi acknowledged that she had told him this before. Meanwhile, Xu Zhen Sheng visited Nan Jianming's grave, filled with guilt, labeling himself a "sinner" in the Nan family. He then went to see Aunt Lan (Lin Mother), carrying provisions and explaining Lin Heping's absence due to company matters and Xu Ali's overseas trip.

He said he came to care for Aunt Lan in their stead. Aunt Lan, still distressed, complained about Nan Sheng's prolonged disappearance without contact, justifying her past opposition to Nan Sheng and Lin Heping's relationship. Xu Zhen Sheng tried to soothe her, reminding her that Nan Sheng cared for her, mentioning a foot-washing basin Nan Sheng had bought for her.

Aunt Lan dismissed this, reiterating her sole wish for Nan Sheng's safe return and a good marriage, so she could face Nan Jianming. She firmly maintained her stance against Nan Sheng and Lin Heping's relationship, deeming it "abnormal" for an "elder brother and younger sister" to be in love, and declared she would never consent, even until her death. Soon after, Xu Ali returned, bringing devastating news to Lin Heping.

She tearfully recounted seeing Nan Sheng at an art exhibition in Barcelona. They had planned to meet, but Nan Sheng never arrived. Upon inquiry at Nan Sheng's workplace, Xu Ali learned that Nan Sheng had been involved in a sea accident at the beach. Despite extensive police searches, her body had not been found. Lin Heping, initially disbelieving, was overwhelmed by grief when the truth sunk in. A funeral was held for Nan Sheng.

Lin Heping, consumed by sorrow, reflected on his broken promises and his inability to give Nan Sheng happiness. Lin Mother, also grieving, expressed profound regret for her past objections to Nan Sheng and Lin Heping, apologizing to both Nan Sheng and Nan Jianming for the tragedy. During the service, a furious Luo Chen confronted Lin Heping, physically attacking him and blaming him for Nan Sheng's death.

Luo Chen cried out that if Lin Heping had just let him be with Nan Sheng, she would still be alive. Lin Heping, accepting his guilt, allowed Luo Chen to strike him. Luo Chen, however, declared he would never forgive Lin Heping and vowed never to let him go. Later, at their old university, Luo Chen and Xiao Xi revisited familiar places.

Luo Chen, still reeling from Nan Sheng's death, felt that all his university memories and the school itself had lost their meaning. Xiao Xi gently reminded him that the school held more than just his and Nan Sheng's memories; it also held their shared past. She pointed out the spot where he had once painted Nan Sheng's oil portrait, recalling their moments there.

Back from the funeral, Xu Ali found Xu Zhen Sheng distraught, hitting himself and lamenting that he had failed Nan Sheng and Aunt Lan. When Xu Ali questioned him, Xu Zhen Sheng confessed a terrible secret: he was responsible for Nan Sheng's father's death. Xu Ali was in disbelief, but he insisted it was true. Just then, Aunt Lan overheard the confession.

Overwhelmed with rage and grief, she accused Xu Zhen Sheng of killing her husband and declared she would never forgive him or Xu Ali. Xu Ali desperately pleaded with Aunt Lan not to reveal the truth, especially to Lin Heping, emphasizing Xu Zhen Sheng's deep value for his childhood friendship with Lin Heping. Aunt Lan, though devastated and heartbroken, eventually agreed to keep silent, but warned them to never appear before her again.

Xu Ali then searched for Xu Zhen Sheng and found a letter he had left. In the letter, Xu Zhen Sheng explained his decision to surrender, recounting how he had accidentally hit Nan Sheng's father with his lorry, panicked, and fled the scene. He expressed his apologies for the wasted efforts in his education and reiterated his plea for Xu Ali to keep the truth from Lin Heping. Xu Ali visited him in prison, still struggling to believe his confession.

He confirmed the story, explaining that he had been confused and afraid, fleeing without realizing the gravity of his actions until Xu Ali informed him of Nan Sheng's father's condition. He revealed that he had initially hoped to atone by protecting and caring for Nan Sheng, even trying to prevent Xu Ali from getting close to Lin Heping and helping Nan Sheng reconcile with Lin Heping, all to ensure Nan Sheng's happiness and ease his conscience.

But with Nan Sheng's own death, his last chance for redemption was gone, leaving him no choice but to surrender. He again begged Xu Ali not to tell Lin Heping, and she tearfully promised to keep his secret.
