Mo Yuji agreed with Little Mint’s observation that there was another person present at Linshui Pavilion the previous night. He surmised that the killer was short, approximately Little Mint's height. The assailant infiltrated through a window while the prince slept, intending to steal the Red Soul Orb. When the prince awoke, a struggle ensued.

Initially, the prince gained the upper hand and cornered the attacker, but the killer mysteriously managed to reverse the situation, stunning the prince with a single move. Mo Yuji also noted that the killer exited through the window but did not enter through it. Little Mint found a fish scale and observed that one fish was missing from the tank, where there should have been three carps.

When she picked up the Red Soul Orb, a woman with piercing eyes suddenly lunged, snatching the orb and scratching Little Mint’s hand. Mo Xiuran promptly intervened, knocking the woman unconscious. Little Mint found Mo Xiuran’s hand also injured, realizing it was a consequence of their master-servant contract. Bu Ou, who happened to be present, offered her specially concocted ointment for their wounds, charging Mo Xiuran a hefty one thousand taels.

Mo Xiuran then personally applied the medicine to Little Mint’s hand. He explained that the woman who attacked them, Dong Zhu, was not the true carp but a Murloc from Yu Li Planet, merely attracted by the Red Soul Orb, a common trait of her species. This confirmed what Bu Ou had told him earlier, as her extensive travels to the Fish Star had given her deep knowledge of Murlocs.

Mo Xiuran further revealed that the actual carp had escaped from the Red Soul Orb and, having lost the orb, needed to absorb energy from adult men to maintain its human form. This made Little Mint deduce that the carp was probably hiding in Wind Snow. She suggested they go there for a private investigation. However, Mo Xiuran strictly forbade her from going, citing the master-servant contract, which meant her injuries would affect him.

He also revealed that the emperor had issued a decree demanding the killer be apprehended within three days, threatening to implicate the entire Mo family if they failed, reinforcing his insistence that she stay safe. Disregarding Mo Xiuran’s orders, Little Mint sought out Mo Yuji for assistance. She found him reviewing case files related to Nan Fei De.

Mo Yuji shared his analysis, revealing that the killer was a habitual criminal who had committed five similar male victim cases near Wind Snow over the past half-month, with each crime occurring every three days between 9 p. m. and 1 a. m. Given that the bazaar was the only place without a curfew during those hours, they concluded that the killer was highly likely to strike again that very night, which happened to be the Qixi Festival.

Little Mint and Mo Yuji entered the Qixi Festival bazaar, pretending to be a couple and making clay figurines as required for admission. Meanwhile, Mo Xiuran arrived with Luo Feng, who was disguised as a woman for the investigation. Mo Xiuran quickly spotted Little Mint and Mo Yuji, watching as they held hands. Luo Feng noticed Mo Xiuran’s discomfort, teasing him that Little Mint was "his" and only allowed to smile at him, though Mo Xiuran denied caring.

Little Mint and Mo Yuji used the traditional threading-the-needle game as a pretense to observe the crowd for the killer. As Little Mint and Mo Yuji completed their threading, Mo Xiuran, acting on a sudden impulse, took a pair of scissors from Luo Feng and deliberately cut their finished thread. Little Mint instantly suspected Mo Xiuran was behind the prank. A haunting song began to play, luring a man away. Little Mint and Mo Yuji pursued him, knocking him unconscious.

They then encountered a woman in red whose veil was dislodged, revealing her to be Nian Xia, Mo Yuji's former maid. Mo Yuji was shocked to see her. An old nanny then explained Nian Xia’s tragic past: a year prior, Lady Yu, fearing Nian Xia's affection for Mo Yuji might jeopardize his future, had sent her away. Nian Xia was sent to Wind Snow, where she managed to preserve her purity for a year.

However, about half a month ago, after being defiled, she was unable to cope and tragically committed suicide by throwing herself into a lake. Coincidentally, the Red Soul Orb had accidentally fallen into Yanming Lake at the same time and, upon contact with water, unsealed and merged with Nian Xia during her suicide attempt. Mo Yuji angrily confronted Lady Yu, accusing her of poisoning his brother and selling Nian Xia to Wind Snow in her ambition for family power.

Lady Yu defended her actions as being for his benefit, so he could compete for the position of master of the Mo family. However, Mo Yuji declared he had no interest in the family fortune or position, which enraged Lady Yu, causing her to slap him. Meanwhile, Mo Xiuran, consumed by jealousy, abruptly carried Little Mint back to his room. He sternly forbade her from spending the Qixi Festival with other men or smiling at them, asserting, "Because you're mine."

He then fastened a cat bell onto her, explaining that if she ever found herself in danger, ringing it would alert him within a ten-li radius. He feigned indifference, claiming he only cared because her injuries would affect him due to their contract. Little Mint, realizing it was a cat bell, immediately deduced that Mo Xiuran was the one who had cut her thread at the festival, knowing only he would do such a childish thing.

To evade her probing questions, Mo Xiuran cleverly transformed into a cat and quickly scurried away. Princess Nan Pingwan expressed her desire to participate in the hunt for the carp. Mo Xiuran agreed, but stipulated that the operation must proceed under his direction. He then had notices posted across the city, announcing a public auction for the Red Soul Orb.

As anticipated, the carp appeared, attempting to steal the orb, but Mo Xiuran had already seen through her scheme, thwarting her plan. The chase for the carp began, but she proved elusive. Mo Xiuran instructed Luo Feng to ensure Little Mint’s safety while he personally pursued the carp. However, the carp’s enchanting song soon mesmerized Mo Xiuran, trapping him in a powerful illusion where he hallucinated a tiger.

Observing Mo Xiuran’s plight, Little Mint, knowing he was in danger, cleverly created a diversion by knocking out Luo Feng, who was guarding her, and then rushed to Mo Xiuran’s side. When Little Mint sustained an injury, the sharp pain from their master-servant contract jolted Mo Xiuran out of his trance. He then drew upon the energy of the Blue Soul Orb to defeat the carp.

Urgently, Mo Xiuran took the injured Little Mint away for treatment, leaving Mo Yuji and Princess Nan Pingwan to manage the aftermath, including subduing the weakened carp with the Red Soul Orb and retrieving the Blue Soul Orb. As the carp’s life ebbed, its consciousness left Nian Xia’s body.

Nian Xia, reverting to her true self, shared a heartfelt final exchange with Mo Yuji, expressing her deep, unrequited love and her contentment in dying by his side before succumbing to her injuries. The carp then returned to the Blue Soul Orb.
