Nie Yusheng questioned Nie Dongyuan about the cause of Tan Jing’s father's death. Nie Dongyuan became extremely agitated, furiously stating that he had never committed any illegal acts and that he would not be held accountable for Tan Jing's father's death, whom he claimed he had never mistreated. He then lashed out, questioning why Nie Yusheng couldn't forget Tan Jing, accusing her of causing trouble, and ordered him out of the room.
Nie Yusheng tried to calm his father, but Nie Dongyuan insisted he leave. Afterward, Nie Yusheng asked a nurse to check Nie Dongyuan's blood pressure, calling it a routine inspection. The next morning, Tan Jing arrived at the hospital to find a head nurse and a caretaker, Liu Hong, attempting to move Pingping to a VIP ward. Pingping informed Tan Jing that "they insist on moving Pingping to the VIP room."
Tan Jing refused, stating she had not arranged it and asking them to take the items back, insisting they were not moving. She then confronted Nie Dongyuan directly, telling him to stay away from them and that they did not need him meddling in their family affairs. Nie Dongyuan asserted that he was not an outsider but Pingping’s grandfather, stating, "He's my grandson."
Tan Jing retorted that her son's last name was Sun, not Nie, but Nie Dongyuan insisted she knew Pingping was his grandson. Tan Jing accused him of thinking he could do anything with his money, to which Nie Dongyuan questioned why she chose a difficult life for Pingping instead of a good one.
Tan Jing revealed that her good life ended the moment her father died and she reminded Nie Dongyuan of his past actions, warning him that if he approached her son again, she would call the police. Nie Yusheng overheard this exchange and, after Tan Jing left in tears, he followed her, pressing her to tell him what happened between her and his father. He offered to face any problem with her so she wouldn't have to suffer alone.
Tan Jing, however, bitterly responded that she and Pingping lived the life they did because they brought it upon themselves, just as his father would say. She added that she had no choice at the time and that they couldn't go back, lamenting that nothing she said could change the fact that their parents were enemies. Later, Nie Yusheng's colleagues were heard gossiping about him having a son.
Mr. Fang called Nie Yusheng to his office, expressing surprise at the sudden news, especially for someone usually so reserved. Nie Yusheng dismissed the gossip, stating he didn't care what others thought, and confessed his heartbreak over Tan Jing's suffering alone for so many years. He added that they would focus on treating Pingping first. Mr. Fang advised him to be mindful of appearances, for both his and Pingping's sakes.
Meanwhile, Tan Jing stayed by Pingping's bedside as he received an IV drip. Pingping asked if she and "Mr. Fengfeng" (Nie Dongyuan) had quarreled because of him. Tan Jing reassured him it was just adult matters and had nothing to do with him. Pingping then expressed a desire for his surgery to happen soon so he could recover and protect her.
Touched by his words, Tan Jing told him that he had always protected her and that she wouldn't have made it this far without him. In a flashback, Tan Jing confronted Nie Dongyuan about her father's accident. Nie Dongyuan offered her five million yuan to help with the aftermath and move past the crisis, with the condition that she break up with Nie Yusheng.
He revealed his unhappiness that Nie Yusheng had abandoned a business career for medicine because of her and stated he wouldn't allow anyone to disrupt his plans for his son. Tan Jing refused the money, asserting that Nie Yusheng was an adult capable of making his own choices, and citing her father's teaching not to accept things for nothing. Nie Dongyuan urged her to reconsider, assuring her the money was always available.
Further flashback details emerged: the contractor, Mr. Lei, had fled, leaving Tan Jing's father in a precarious legal situation. Although her father had signed a contract with a labor company with no apparent qualification issues, Tan Jing questioned if the company was genuinely unrelated to Nie Dongyuan, mentioning Sun Zhijun’s belief that her father was forced to use them.
She was informed that the labor company had not insured its workers, meaning her father, as the legal representative of the construction project company, and Sun Zhijun, as the project manager, would face significant legal liabilities, potentially imprisonment. In her despair, Tan Jing turned to Sun Zhijun, telling him that Pingping was her only family left. Sun Zhijun promised to support her, assuring her that if she kept the baby, they would raise him together.
Later, Wang Yuling discovered Tan Jing had a fever of 38°C and urged her to go home to rest and take medication, promising to care for Pingping. Alone, Tan Jing reflected on her past choices: deciding to keep her baby, not telling Nie Yusheng, and pushing him away now. She questioned if she truly had choices.
She recounted how she once believed love could overcome all problems but realized after her father's death that many difficult moments in life must be faced alone. Shu Qin spoke with Nie Yusheng, who admitted he felt no real connection or "bond" as a father. Shu Qin explained that such feelings take time to develop and that some people love so deeply they try desperately to protect it.
She speculated that Tan Jing, whose world collapsed after her father's death, chose not to tell Nie Yusheng to preserve their love at its purest moment, so she could find comfort in that memory during future hardships. Meanwhile, Shu Qin met Sheng Fangting. They reminisced about their impulsive breakup and acknowledged lingering feelings, with Sheng Fangting observing that they had both matured since then. Nie Yusheng later joined Sun Zhijun for drinks at a food stall.
Nie Yusheng expressed envy for Sun Zhijun, who had Tan Jing as his wife and the life Nie Yusheng yearned for. Sun Zhijun retorted that he envied Nie Yusheng and then provocatively stated that Pingping belonged to the Sun family. Nie Yusheng offered Sun Zhijun money for a divorce, but Sun Zhijun angrily refused, calling him a "fool" and Nie Dongyuan’s true son.
Sun Zhijun then revealed the painful truth: during Tan Jing's childbirth, she suffered massive bleeding while Nie Yusheng was absent. He further disclosed that after Tan Jing's father died when scaffolding collapsed, killing many, Nie Dongyuan's company "brushed the matter aside" and made Tan Jing's family bear the responsibility. He added that Tan Jing, desperate and having sold her house, took the five million yuan from Nie Dongyuan as "hush money" to silence her.
An argument with another table escalated into a fight, which Nie Yusheng helped Sun Zhijun in. Afterward, Nie Yusheng assisted a heavily intoxicated Sun Zhijun in getting home. Late that night, Nie Yusheng arrived at Tan Jing's old apartment, where he collapsed at the door, crying uncontrollably.
He demanded to know why she hadn't told him the truth, blaming himself for his absence when she needed him most, saying that Sun Zhijun had told him everything and that he thought he had suffered enough. Tan Jing embraced him silently and stayed by his side throughout the night. The next morning, Nie Yusheng awoke in Tan Jing's apartment and saw her making breakfast in the kitchen, a scene he had long dreamt of.
At breakfast, he told her that he did not agree with moving Pingping to a different ward and promised to take care of that issue. He also suggested they leave the old building due to its poor environment. Tan Jing did not verbally respond but peeled an egg for him. Seizing the moment, Nie Yusheng offered to have a caretaker stay at the hospital to care for Pingping, allowing Tan Jing to go to work.
As he left, he offered her his house key, explaining his place was closer to the hospital and she could rest or cook for Pingping there. Tan Jing subtly avoided taking the key, and Nie Yusheng urged her not to reject him, assuring her he had no other intentions.
