Nie Yusheng reminisced about a time seven years ago when Tan Jing tied a natal year red string on his wrist before he left for Belgium. He initially found it too feminine, fearing others would laugh, but then promised he would never take it off unless she wove him a new one for his next natal year. At that moment, he was certain he would never make her cry.
Back in the present, as Nie Yusheng was lying in bed, he received a phone call from Tan Jing. Recognizing her number, he deduced she was calling to plead for Sun Zhijun, so he immediately hung up. Tan Jing called again, requesting to speak in person. Nie Yusheng agreed, instructing her to come to his apartment.
When she arrived, Tan Jing apologized for Sun Zhijun's actions, explaining that he didn't intend to hurt him and that he wasn't a bad person, asking Nie Yusheng to forgive him. Nie Yusheng, however, insisted that Sun Zhijun apologize himself, saying he didn't want to hear it from her. He then angrily asked if she would have come to see him if it weren't for Sun Zhijun, to which Tan Jing admitted it was true.
Exasperated, Nie Yusheng dragged Tan Jing to a mirror, pointing out the bruises on her face from Sun Zhijun. As old memories surfaced, their heated confrontation dissolved into a tender, passionate kiss, a culmination of years of unspoken longing. Meanwhile, Shu Qin repeatedly called Nie Yusheng, but he didn't answer. Upon arriving at his apartment, she noticed his clothes left in the entryway, immediately understanding the situation. She quietly left, waiting in her car until Tan Jing departed.
Later, Nie Yusheng saw Shu Qin's missed calls and returned her call. Shu Qin, having arrived at his apartment with groceries, decided to break up with him. She asserted that they had both tried their best, and there was no need to force their relationship further; they were better off as friends. Nie Yusheng agreed, admitting that he had always believed only Shu Qin could help him move on, but he realized he still couldn't let go of the past.
Shu Qin confessed she felt the same, acknowledging that two lonely people together sometimes only feel more isolated. They both acknowledged their shared predicament, agreeing to remain friends. At the hospital, Pingping sat by the window, watching the pouring rain and worrying that his mother didn't have an umbrella. Wang Yuling comforted him, assuring him that his mother was an adult and would take care of herself.
Tan Jing, waiting at a bus stop, received a call from the police station asking her to pick up Sun Zhijun. They shared an umbrella and ate a simple meal at a nearby restaurant. Seeing the bruise on Tan Jing’s lip, Sun Zhijun expressed remorse for his actions. He also voiced concerns about the experimental surgery for Pingping. Tan Jing, recalling Pingping's difficult birth and Sun Zhijun's worries, understood his perspective.
However, she emphasized the urgency of Pingping’s condition, and that Nie Yusheng had promised to cure Pingping if he performed the CM surgery. She urged Sun Zhijun to apologize to Nie Yusheng, stressing that he was their only hope. After Nie Yusheng returned from seeing Shu Qin off, Sun Zhijun, accompanied by Tan Jing, knelt before him. He apologized for his past actions and expressed deep gratitude for Nie Yusheng's willingness to perform Pingping's surgery for free.
Nie Yusheng helped him up. As Sun Zhijun embraced Nie Yusheng, he whispered a veiled threat, warning Nie Yusheng that if Pingping was not cured, he would kill him. Separately, Sheng Fangting sent two opera tickets to Shu Qin, subtly probing her relationship status. Shu Qin revealed she had broken up with Nie Yusheng, clarifying that she initiated it. She said she was not heartbroken but just felt lost, and was currently at a bar she used to frequent.
Sheng Fangting advised her to return home, concerned for her safety. He added that he understood her better than anyone else, causing a brief, awkward silence before he ended the call. The next morning, Wang Yuling took Pingping to the hospital's children's activity center while Tan Jing, exhausted, remained asleep. A nurse woke Tan Jing, informing her that Director Fang had decided to cancel the CM experimental surgery, crushing Tan Jing's hopes.
Meanwhile, Nie Dongyuan was distributing toys at the children's activity center. He noticed Pingping quietly reading a storybook and offered him a Bumblebee toy. Pingping politely declined, explaining that his mother taught him not to accept gifts without merit. Nie Dongyuan, charmed by the boy's character, clarified that the toys were for all the children in the hospital, so his mother wouldn't scold him. Pingping then accepted the toy, thanking "Grandpa Fengfeng."
Nie Dongyuan reached out to pat Pingping's head, but the boy repeatedly dodged his hand, reminding Nie Dongyuan of his son, Nie Yusheng, when he was a child. He observed Pingping's large eyes and long eyelashes, noting the resemblance to his own son. Wang Yuling explained that Pingping had a congenital heart defect and that Nie Yusheng was his attending physician. Nie Dongyuan was surprised by the coincidence and promised to tell his son to take good care of Pingping.
Wang Yuling then, somewhat awkwardly, asked Nie Dongyuan for a donation towards Pingping's surgery, mentioning Tan Jing's financial struggles. Nie Dongyuan expressed sympathy, acknowledging that such situations were common in hospitals, but did not agree to donate money. He reiterated his promise to ensure his son took good care of Pingping. Tan Jing, who had been watching from the doorway, did not enter.
Back in the ward, Tan Jing scolded Pingping for accepting the toy, reminding him again not to take things from others. Wang Yuling tried to defend Pingping, suggesting that Nie Dongyuan seemed fond of him and that more interaction might be good. However, Tan Jing vehemently disagreed, stating she didn't trust Nie Dongyuan and didn't want Pingping to have contact with such people. Soon after, Tan Jing felt unwell.
A nurse took her temperature and found she had a high fever of 39°C. The nurse instructed her to go to the emergency room immediately to prevent spreading her cold to the vulnerable children in the ward. Tan Jing asked the nurse to keep an eye on Pingping at Bed 39, as he often woke up at night looking for her, before heading to the ER, where she was spotted by Nie Yusheng.
