At Jiuzhou Inn, Nanku Yueli taught Meiyin central plains etiquette using pastries made by Lanyuer, successfully lowering Meiyin's guard. Nanku Yueli then deliberately had Meiyin try on a golden-red gown in a back room. Seizing the opportunity, she stabbed Meiyin in the throat with a dagger, brutally killing her. Meiyin screamed in agony, described as being cut piece by piece.
Upon his return, Muyun Heguo discovered Meiyin's tragic demise and was deeply shocked by Nanku Yueli's ruthless cruelty, confronting her about her actions. Covered in blood, Nanku Yueli calmly declared to Muyun Heguo that the empress position was hers alone, warning that any other woman who dared to contend with her would suffer Meiyin's fate. Muyun Heguo, hearing this, dared not reveal his prior agreement with Xue Daren to establish Ji Yuncong as empress.
Instead, he showered Nanku Yueli with sweet words of love, secretly believing Meiyin's death served his purposes. In Beilu, a major battle was imminent, and the Muru Iron Cavalry had suffered the loss of their warhorses, referred to as "Lingfeng," impacting their cavalry advantage. Muru Shuo sought Hanshan's opinion on the upcoming conflict. Hanshan revealed the army's dire food shortage, stating that without fighting, they would simply await death, whereas battle offered a chance of victory.
Despite the lost warhorses, Hanshan emphasized they still possessed longbows and battle formations, believing that winning this battle would secure Hanzhou for the Duan Dynasty and preserve the Muru family's honor. However, Muru Shuo, facing a moment of life and death, rejected Hanshan's view. He predicted certain defeat from the moment the warhorses fled and urged Hanshan to make preparations for retreat. Hanshan refused to accept defeat, lamenting the potential ruin of Muru family honor and the loss of Hanzhou.
Muru Shuo, having come to terms with the situation, explained to Hanshan that Hanzhou was only a part of the world, not the entirety, and that Muyun Qin was waiting for them back in the palace. They could not stake everything on Hanzhou, and retreating to Tianqi City was the best choice.
Hanshan countered that Helan army soldiers would pursue them even if they retreated, and volunteered to stay behind to intercept and delay the Helan army, thereby buying Muru Shuo time to return to Tianqi, where Muyun Qin was isolated and unsupported. After careful consideration, Muru Shuo agreed to Hanshan's suggestion. Hanshan bid farewell to Muru Shuo, entrusting him with a longevity lock (or jade pendant) and requesting it be buried in the family tomb if he died in Hanzhou.
Muru Shuo was heartbroken but, for the sake of the empire, chose to leave alone. He confessed to Hanshan that he was a deserter, using thousands of lives as a shield to escape the battlefield. Hanshan recalled Muru Shuo's past teachings, stating that by remembering their highest purpose, they would know how to choose right from wrong, thus not considering Muru Shuo's current actions to be wrong. With that, Hanshan and Muru Shuo parted ways.
Muru Shuo continued to ponder why he and Muyun Qin, who both forbade themselves from making mistakes, had nevertheless arrived at such a predicament. In Tianqi City, the increasingly frequent and urgent petitions from various kings to rally to the Emperor overwhelmed Muyun Qin, who cried in anguish, clutching the memorials. After a moment, he ordered Wu Ruyi to summon Crown Prince Muyun Sheng for an audience on a chosen day.
Muyun Qin then drew the Emperor's Sword, hoping to gain enlightenment and make a choice. He still found himself unable to decide, deeply conflicted between the fate of the empire and his own son, perpetually caught in a difficult dilemma. Mu Ruhanjiang requested a carriage driver to take him to the most crucial battleground.
The driver brought Mu Ruhanjiang to Tianqi City, warning that with various kings preparing to rally to the Emperor, Tianqi was destined to become a "blood city," making it the place most in need of skilled fighters. Mu Ruhanjiang's appearance at the city gate was observed by Muyun De's spy, who relayed the information to Muyun De. Muyun De personally came to meet Mu Ruhanjiang, informing him of Tianqi City's volatile situation.
He explained that if Muyun Qin were to execute Muyun Sheng, the kings of Kyushu would not raise armies. Muyun De sought Mu Ruhanjiang's opinion on the matter, emphasizing the displacement of commoners should war erupt. Mu Ruhanjiang did not engage with Muyun De, turning and leaving instead. Mu Ruhanjiang arrived at Weiping Zhai looking for Muyun Sheng and unexpectedly found Feng Tingchang imprisoned in a bamboo hut within the residence.
Upon learning Feng Tingchang intended to assassinate Muyun Sheng, Mu Ruhanjiang dismissed her as overestimating her abilities, calling her a "bird person." He then declared his intention to live in Weiping Zhai, promising never to leave Muyun Sheng again and to accompany him wherever he went. Muyun Sheng happily agreed, and the two began to eat and live together. That night, as Mu Ruhanjiang ate steamed buns outside, Muyun Sheng asked him why he chose to stay.
Mu Ruhanjiang countered by asking why the sea is blue. Muyun Sheng replied, "because of light refraction," to which Mu Ruhanjiang humorously answered, "because it's idle," causing Muyun Sheng to laugh. From Guanxing Pavilion, Mo Yucheng perceived the imminent chaos engulfing the world. He visited Su Yuning in prison, asking if she regretted her choices. Su Yuning affirmed her inner peace, stating she felt no fear or regret.
Mo Yucheng found her words laughable, given her imprisonment, and questioned how she could claim tranquility. Su Yuning, with a serene expression, told Mo Yucheng that her heart was undisturbed. She explained that in life, amidst all its troubles, true peace comes from continuously thinking of and caring for others—a quality Mo Yucheng lacked.
Mo Yucheng rejected Su Yuning's philosophy, contending that if everyone thought as she did, the world would lack competition, the law of the jungle, and survival of the fittest. He then snatched half of Su Yuning's sword tassel or bracelet, coldly vowing to ruin both her and Mu Ruhanjiang. Simultaneously, he instructed the jailers to care for Ling Heqing, as she was expected to prove highly useful soon.
In Wanzhou, Muru Ping cunningly tried to persuade Muyun Luan to remain by offering him walnut pastries, jokingly saying he could eat them daily if he stayed. At this moment, Muxuan arrived with a letter from Muyun De. Muxuan initially hesitated to reveal its contents in Muru Ping's presence, showing wariness. Muyun Luan, however, had everything prepared and commanded Muxuan to read Muyun De's letter aloud, despite Muxuan's deep apprehension.
The letter from Muyun De informed Muyun Luan that the opportunity to utterly eradicate the Mu Ru family had arrived, and that Muyun Luan could soon dispatch troops to Tianqi to seize the throne, signaling that the imperial rule of Kyushu was about to change hands. Muru Ping was shocked upon hearing this and tearfully confronted Muyun Luan, questioning why he would conspire against the Mu Ru family. Muyun Luan merely smiled and declared his intent for the Mu Ru family to completely disappear.
