Sodameng found himself in a dire predicament, having offended both the Muru Iron Cavalry and the Tieqin Alliance, which included Longge's Kusubu tribe, in his attempt to profit from their conflict. His only remaining opportunity was to detain an envoy prince from the Eastern Land court, holding him hostage. His subordinate, however, pointed out that the dispatched prince was a confined prince, thus posing no real threat to the Eastern Land.
The subordinate instead suggested forming alliances with other aggressive tribes, such as the Feather and Kuafu tribes, and leveraging the production of mechanical armors (jifengjia) by Fanlakaise of the Underground City, to generate significant profit. Separately, Agabu, sent by Muyun De, informed Sodameng that Muyun Qin disfavored Prince He Ge and was only using a stalling tactic for peace talks.
Muyun De hoped Sodameng would aid the Northern Land and Helan Tieyuan in defeating Muru, promising Sodameng control over all Hanzhou's future business. Tieduo, the sister of Helan Tieyuan, was present during these discussions. Disgusted by the conversations, she demanded her short knives, axes, and a boat to leave.
Sodameng, seeing an opportunity, agreed to her terms but demanded Tieduo herself in return, planning to hand her over to the Eastern Land court to gain merit and avoid his current predicament. Tieduo, strong since childhood, was not intimidated. She secretly took a short knife meant for cutting lamb. When Senior Officer Gao, who had previously drugged her, entered to subdue her, Tieduo stabbed his eyes with the knife, then seized his weapon and killed him.
Sodameng and his subordinate, terrified, quickly gathered gold from the tent and hid. Outside, Tieduo fought fiercely, killing her way through the Sodameng tribe's men in a bloody battle, even emerging from a pile of bodies in an alley after eliminating all soldiers who pursued her. Covered in blood, she returned to Sodameng. She demanded to know how he controlled the Kusubu and Longge tribes. Sodameng, begging for his life, handed over the seals of the two tribes' chiefs.
Despite his pleas, Tieduo killed him with a knife. Amidst the ensuing panic in Sodameng's camp, Agabu seized the opportunity to sneak into the granary, where he discovered a large supply of grain. After killing Sodameng, Tieduo walked out into the courtyard and loudly called out Shuofeng Heye's name to the sky. Following Sodameng's death, the Tang family brothers informed Prince He Ge that he would no longer have to journey to Hanzhou.
With his safe return to the court, He Ge was bound to uphold his agreement with the Tang family brothers. To ensure he would not renege on their deal, the Tang family brothers dispatched their maid, Meiyin, to accompany Prince He Ge on the Henggong ship. Her mission was to assist him in ascending the throne and ensure he ceded the agreed sea territory to them. If He Ge failed to claim the throne, his life would be considered worthless.
Meanwhile, in Tianqi City, Yu Xinji patrolled Weiping Zhai, sensing something amiss. Muyun Sheng called him in, inquiring about the healing time for the 'Shi Lu Zhen' poison, which prevented him from painting. Yu Xinji reminded Muyun Sheng of his more important duties, but Muyun Sheng reflected on his passion, noting he began painting at age five, while Yu Xinji started practicing sword at ten.
Later, a Feather tribe assassin named Feng Tingchang attempted to assassinate Muyun Sheng in the courtyard. Yu Xinji, alert and prepared, skillfully cut down her incoming arrow. As her plot was exposed, Feng Tingchang revealed her wings, attempting to escape, but Yu Xinji shot her down. When asked why she sought to kill him, Feng Tingchang stated she was paid in gold and tasked with the mission, aspiring to become a top assassin of the He Xue.
Yu Xinji mocked her lack of skill, telling her she had lost her life and would not get another chance. Despite this, Muyun Sheng decided to spare Feng Tingchang, ordering her release once her injuries had healed. Concurrently, while Mu Ruhanjiang searched fruitlessly for Su Yuning, Muru Hanshan returned dejectedly to his camp in the Northern Land wilderness, where he and Muru Suo were preparing for another difficult battle.
Hanshan was deeply saddened by the loss of his warhorse, which had been injured by Shuofeng Heye during a previous attack on the Helan tribe and had been his companion for many years, almost a brother. Hanshan felt great shame over his performance in the battle against Helan.
He believed he had failed to meet the high expectations Muru Suo had held for him since childhood, expectations that included inheriting the Muru glory and ensuring the safety of the Duan Dynasty's people. Muru Suo, however, comforted Hanshan, affirming his decision-making abilities and praising him as capable. He explained that a cavalryman's pain at losing a warhorse revealed the true character of a Muru man.
Yet, Muru Suo also noted that Hanshan's perspective was too narrow; a great general's achievements were not merely measured by the number of enemies slain, but also by their composure in difficult times and their ability to smile to inspire soldiers, especially as a great battle approached. The word "smile" reminded Hanshan of Mu Ruhanjiang, who was known for his cheerful disposition.
This reinforced Hanshan's long-held belief that Muru Suo favored Hanjiang over him, despite Hanshan having received Muru Suo's teachings since childhood. Kneeling, Hanshan directly asked Muru Suo if he liked Hanjiang the most. Muru Suo remained silent for a long time before admitting that he owed Mu Ruhanjiang. Understanding this as Muru Suo's answer, Hanshan laughed loudly and pleaded with Muru Suo to appoint Mu Ruhanjiang as the next Great General. Muru Suo, angered by this suggestion, accused Hanshan of jealousy.
